Breaking news tonight 2 quakes rattling the bay area in the past 20 minutes. The biggest a magnitude 4. 5. We are live with the latest from the usgs. This guy walked out with a work of art from a legendary artist in less than a minute. Could facebook be doomed . Why the hashtag delete facebook is trending on twitter tonight. I was charmed by the whole idea. It is so cute. It looks like a house. Our original series project home. We take a look at a potential solution to homelessness tight living in tiny homes. Good evening. Lots of you calling into our newsroom tonight about the joel the bay area got 20 minutes ago. Two earthquakes in Pleasant Hill. The biggest a 4. 5. Betty is in lafayette where tonights earthquake was definitely widely felt. Reporter we are in the downtown lafayette area. My photographer and i definitely felts earthquake. I was inside the news van when it happened working on the computer when all of a sudden we felt the truck shake. It really felt like a quick jolt. It lasted for a few seconds. Shortly after that a woman who lives nearby and Senior Housing ran out frantic saying she felt this earthquake. She was so rattled by it she could not appear on camera. But right now we are seeing an active response on twitter. People all across the bay area are reporting feeling they felt this earthquake particularly across the east bay. Responses from people in oakland antioch pleasanton and so forth. We will continue to monitor the situation and bring you any new developments as soon as we get them. I wanted to ask you quickly we had a situation where we had to earthquakes within 10 minutes. One was a smaller magnitude 2. 5. About 10 minutes later according to usgs we had the 4. 5. Has anybody talked about any damage in their homes even minor . Reporter so far there are no reports of any injuries or damage. So far at least in this area. My photographer and i probably felt just the one earthquake. The larger one. Reporting live from lafayette. Thank you betty. We have amy from the usgs r moments ago we were speaking with you about the second earthquake that registered less than a 3. 0 magnitude. You have more information on exactly where that was censored and any more details . This information we have is they were pretty much around the same location. There is an error in our location capabilities. Basically the same it is definitely a four shock of this large event. They did not happen simultaneously. About 10 minutes prior. Do you have any information at this point about the 4. 5 . We dont have any other information right now. That magnitude is holding strong. We do know this was about 14 1 2 kilometers deep. Fairly normal and that it shallowness. We have almost 30,000 responses on our website that we have earthquake. Usgs. Gov. We are seeing responses obviously reporting moderate shaking. Intensity five. Right there at the epicenter. We are seeing felt as far out as reno. Fresno. This is definitely widely felt even further than you might think. Can you tell us about the fault line in this ar dont have information about which fault it occurred on. That will be reserved for scientists in the morning when they return. They will obably lookat the patterns and more of the rupturing how the events unfolded. I dont have that have an earthquake that is felt so widely . For sure in San Francisco we felt that here. As far away asfar south or north a magnitude 4. 5. Create that much disturbance . It definitely can. Just for relative perspective. If this was an earthquake east of the rockies and it was a 4. 5 up to 10 times greater than what we are seeing here. In california and areas rockies and west because of the nature of the geology and the sedimentation and the bedrock in that area we dont see earthquakes as the same magnitude earthquake would not be as widely felt or experienced by this intensely for a looser sedimentation. Propagate with more energy elsewhere. It is surprising we are even seeing it into nevada. Not entirely. Pg and he is reporting there has been no damage. No reports of damage that they know of. The same thing with contra costa fire. For some folks who might have missed this quake. Especially the first one. The second one. Can you describe exactly what type of quake it was . Via looking at the mechanisms. You guys mentioned may be feeling some interesting never jolting. We have to look deeper to see if there might have been a double event of some sort. You definitely get the different parts of the earthquake where you have the primary and secondary in the surface response. You could have been feeling different pieces of that. Generally in this area to earthquakes but im not sure what we are seeing quite yet on this one. From what i can tell it looks like. People will give that review tomorrow. With more scientific tools to look at more details including the fault. We appreciate that. Some information from bart that they are now in a reduced mode. This is what they go into as a precaution to check the track ways. They are running at 20 speed right now. Systemwide. The system shuts down in another hour. If youre waiting for someone to get home it might take a while. Bart reached reporting no damage. They are at reduced speed. Pg e no reports of damage. Contra costa fire saying the same thing. Lets send it to our meteorologist who has been monitoring the situation. I know you both said you felt this thing when it happened at 8 35 pm. Let me show you how widely felt this was. If you take a look at the map. This is the did you feel it map. Usgs representative was talking about. She said it was felt over a wide area. The epicenter was a mile south southeast of Pleasant Hill. Take a look at the peninsula and the city. He widely felt. The colors of light blue tell you most of the reports coming in here are fairly light. Same thing for the east bay. You can get down to the south bay similar story. If we come in for a closer look at the epicenter in and around the diablo valley just to the southeast of Pleasant Hill. This was felt moderately. A 4. 5 is not going to go unnoticed. At this point we dont have reports of damage. As far as what fault it happened on. If we cant tell you itcan tell you which ones it wasnt. This was not the hayward. Those of the two we are most concerned about. Theres a whole series of other false display out from that. The epicenter is too far inland to have been on either of the two big ones. When it first happened i think the first usgs report said to. 9 in walden. All i could think was that was bigger than a 2. 9. The second report came out saying it was a 4. 5. That sounds a lot more like it. Make sure you stay with us on air and online as the story develops. You can head to our website as well. There was other news tonight. More and more cities are building them. Tiny homes really a solution to the homeless crisis . To ask a homeless person to make that compromise i think is rather defeating the purpose. 4. 5 quake in the east bay. Blow a kiss, into the sun we need someone to lean on blow a kiss, into the sun all we need is somebody to lean on the holidays begin here at the disneyland resort. We are following breaking news. Magnitude 4. Nolong ago. That tremor centered near the city of Pleasant Hill. Usgs reports that a second 2. 5 quake hit. Just about 10 minutes before the 4. 5. It was censored just off highway 680 near the best buy store. Just south of hooks than road. A live look at the east bay. Viewers have been reported feeling that joe. Maybe a rolling feeling. The jolt being the strongest. Viewers in the north bay and viewers to the south bay say they felt it as well. No initial reports of damage. Pg e said they gave the all clear. The same thing with contra costa fire. What is eerie about this we are days away from the 30th anniversary of the quake. A lot of us are on age. At least i know i am. Feeling that quake definitely it scared me. I dont know about you. Conjured up memories of what happened in 89. We will talk about that all week long. Our original series tonight project home. We are taking a look at tiny homes. The small but growing movement has people wondering if these miniature models can help the homeless. Susie gives us a glimpse at the tiny living lifestyle. Reporter for amanda aesthetics were a big part of the appeal of this tiny home. I was charmed. By the whole idea. Reporter amanda is a professional organizer. Which helps when youre living in a 130 square foot home. This slides over. So i am using the space twice. Reporter everything must be in its place. She has thought of a place for everything. Artists and builders enjoy the fact that they created the space. Exactly to their needs. It is a custom fit. That has a lot of appeal. Reporter displays cost her 28,000. A steal by any measure in the bay area. While she wasnt motivated at the tiny price tag amanda wants you to know she is a tiny house person. That is a social and cultural movement. It is not just about saving money. It is about artistic minimalism and reducing your carbon footprint. The community is very eco aware. Many people want to live in a tiny house because it costs less. It allows them to save money for the future. That is terrific. But also the people who are doing innovations creating the tiny house to be more off grid. Reporter tiny homes grew in popularity around 2008 after so many people lost their homes in the mortgage crisis. Craigslist advertisements in the bay area now offer the opportunity to rent dirt for 800 a month. A price that will get you a decent apartment in many other big cities. Amanda rinsed the slot for 700 10 hours a week of gardening for her landlord. She loves her lifestyle. The cautions it is not for everyone. If you ask your friends would you live without a flush toilet . Chances are 99 will say no. Reporter around the Region Community organizers like joe serrano are hoping the inexpensive miniature models might health to solve the men might help to solve the misery on our streets. They would come home to their tiny home. Reporter joe is the ceo of tentmakers. He is drafting a proposal that he plans to present to Richmond City council in the coming weeks. About taking this derelict City Property and turning it into a tiny home park for homeless veterans. What i would like to do here is develop the site. This is a great building. It is a great site. There is a lot of potential to provide housing for people who are homeless. Reporter is a veteran and developer he cant help but see vacant lots is untapped potential. This is the right thing to do. It doesnt cost. It is costing more money to not do it then it would be to do it. Reporter it is an idea that has taken on different forms around the bay area. Oakland has its community cabins. San jose is building tiny homes for the homeless. Housing advocates in San Francisco propose a tiny village in the tenderloin last month. The question is will it work . It is all right for an interim period. Because it is not for everyone. Not everyone things off grid. To ask a homeless person to make that think is rather defea purpose. Reporter researchers found if you are someone willing to commit to the rules that often go along with city run communities success rates are extremely high. But many people wont even consider this option because there are so many strings attached. Like a commitment to keeping certain hours. And sobriety. Amanda said if youre willing to make some big changes there is plenty of room for you to find your place in this small but growing community. Start which i think is a part of the appeal. We are kind of a housing rebels. That is the debate over the city run models. Researchers will say they are counterintuitive. If you require people to drastically change their behavior whether that is getting sober or dealing with any Substance Abuse issues as a requirement to receive shelter they might not choose to come inside at all. If you offer Housing First and then work on behavior they say it is much more successful. You and i talk about this earlier downstairs about. We call them tiny homes. The homes the army built in San Francisco. There were hundreds of those things. That is not a new idea. They served a purpose. I got moved on. Some of those are still around. You would be surprised at the price they sell for. The trend coming back. Maybe it will work again for a different reason. Keeps sending us your ideas. Also your stories using the address project home cbs. Com. You can also watch all of susies reports on our website. Kpix. Com. Estate was the whole pg e accountable for last weeks power outage. That is going to make a headline especially when just about everybody feels it. 46 minutes ago. Thank you look at the map that shows where this earthquake was felt throughout the bay area. This is a colorcoded map. You might not be used to seeing a map like this. That is where the epicenter was. Just south of Pleasant Hill. I will show you detail in just a second. The bigger one was the 4. 5. Happening at 10 10 33 pm. Just 10 minutes before that we had a 2. 5. We havent had any since then.
