We do know there are liquids on the floor in the room. And on the counter in the room. We dont know if those are mouthwash or if those are the hazardous chemicals. Reporter guests saying on the 19th floor didnt know what was going on an they were told to evacuate. They said it wasnt a fire but didnt say anything else. Reporter caroline says she smelled a strong chemical odor in the hallway. I wasnt exactly a gas smell. I have never smelled that before. It kind of smelled like gas. But not too sure. Reporter hazmat crews did not tell us exactly what type of chemicals they found that is part of the police investigation. They did originally believe it was a sulfur compound because of the rotten egg smell. The 17th through 20th floors were evacuated. Now, only the 19th floor is closed to guests. The rest of the floors have reopened. Police still investigating that womans death on the 19th floor. Also, even though the air has been deemed safe to breathe, there is still a strong odor in the 19th floor of the hotel. They are keeping guests out until they can get that all cleaned up. It all started in midland this afternoon when the suspect fired on a state trooper during a traffic stop. He then drove 20 miles to odessa where he hijacked a mail truck and began firing at random. Five people are confirmed dead. And at least 21 were wounded including three Law Enforcement officers. The gunman was later killed in a shootout with police. He is a white man in his mid 30s. His motives are still unclear. Well have the latest this developing story at 6 30. A smoky grass fire made a mess of traffic at altamont pass. It shut down three lanes of eastbound 580 if two hours this afternoon. About 20 miles away in hayward, flames shot through the roof of this vacant billing in b street. No injuries reported. Fire crews are still on scene at this hour. And, so far, they dont know how that fire started. Well Governor Newsom has struck a deal with landlord and tenant groups to introduce statewide rent control. Lawmakers call it a compromise that would protect both sides. But, kpix5s da lin tells us neither side is happy tonight. Reporter tenant advocates say the bill is not strong enough. And landlords say rent control will worsen the housing crisis. We have been to sacramento a lot. Reporter tenant elsa stevens is thrilled to see her efforts pay off. She and many other tenant advocates have been pressuring the governor to pass more tenant protection laws. Assembly david chiu introduced the bill. It would cap the annual increases at 5 . Plus, the rate of inflation. The total increase cannot surpass 10 . Its statewide rent control. It is not strong. But its something. I think it is ludicrous. Reporter some tenant groups say the increases will eventually add up and become unaffordable and it fails to protect seniors on a fixed income. Seniors just convinced their landlord to reduce 5 rent hike down to 3 . We dont get raises as often as they want to increase the rent. Reporter many landlords also dont like the bill. Realtor guy bloom says he sold his rent to a house in alameda because of the law. It doesnt solve the long term problem. Reporter he believers it will discourage developers from building more housing and result in higher rents. Rent control is going to affect supply and demand. There will be less real estates to invest in and there will be less rental properties for people to rent from. Reporter neither side is happy. And lawmakers see that as a good compromise. Supporters believe this time around, theyll have enough votes to pass a statewide rent control law. In richmond, im da lin, kpix5. Affordability is at the center of a big housing battle in alameda county. Neighbors and labor groups are appealing a plan to build a 37 story tower near the 19th street bart station. At 420 feet, it would be the citys tallest building housing about 300 apartments. Neighbors object to the lack of affordable units and the possible environmental impacts of the construction itself. The city council could take up the appeal in october.
