I never expected it to be near my home nor my animals get hurt. The fire briefly threatened nearby apartments. Crews stopped the flames from advancing. This morning, residents in san Franciscos Balboa park area are divided on a plan to help the homeless population. Some want to turn a parking lot into a center for the homeless. It would have 24 hour security, bathrooms, and social services. Hundreds of residents packed a meeting. Some welcomed it and some expressed concern. Neighbors feel the leaders are leaving them out of the plan. Something needs to happen to help the homeless and to keep them off from sleeping in front of peoples homes. We worked hard for what weve got and we dont want to see the neighborhood go down the tubes. Its going to be a big mess. Some are concerned the b. A. R. T. Station will become more dangerous. If the plan moves forward, the center could be open by november thanks to 1 million in funding from the city. And San Mateo County is cleaning up the waste. Dozens of volunteers stepped in the help. They gathered at the village in daly city and went street to street to clear the trash. The county has seen a 21 spike in homelessness. And good news for a west oakland womens shelter in danger of eviction. It raised enough money to stay open just under the wire. They have helped hundreds of homeless women over the past decade. But they fell behind on the rent payments after hit with a 75 increase last year. The shelter needed to come up with 14,000 by friday to keep its doors open. Thanks to a gofundme campaign, it hit the goal and an extra 10,000. Donations poured in from more than 200 people. The largest contribution was 5,000. Of and a plan is in the works to replace part of a Shopping Center in the city of alameda with hundreds of apartments. The owners hope to capitalize on the high demand for housing. They envision 1200 apartments by the year 2045. The area currently has underused land. Another goal of the plan is to open potential losses in the retail market. If some of the stores leave, housing would take their place. However, some core businesses could remain, such as trader joes and safeway. The mayor says shes cautiously optimistic about the idea.
