To the person you were on the phone with feel it . Yes they did. Her dog barked in the back of the reporter in dublin at the school of imagination evacuated due to the quake. They credited their bimonthly earthquake drills to how efficiently they evacuated. And here is what is unalike from our reporters surveillance camera near the epicenter. Some felt it. We were at a job site in the house and the house shook and that was it. Reporter what did you do . Kept working. You kept working . Of course. . You knew what it was . Absolutely. Reporter did rattle your nerves, you seem lowkey . We live in california. Out of the post office and did not feel a thing. Reporter what about your dog, did he give you a warning . She was whimpering but she does that a lot so i dont think so. But it is possible. Inevitably there will be another one, a bigger one. So we better get prepared, right . Reporter are you prepared . Pretty much. What does that mean, what is prepared mean . Plenty of food, dry goods in the garage, plenty of water. You know, emergency medical equipment, those kinds of things, money stashed away in certain areas so that you can grab cash and run with it. Reporter he is prepared, the question is are you . Weve had the warnings in Southern California seen what has happened there and now the subtle warning here. But there could be the next big one and it is time to prepare. In the east bay, juliette goodrich, kpix5. I am andria borba at the u. S. Geological survey in menlo park. Scientist here do not believe that this earthquake and its aftershocks are the start of a storm like we have seen in the past in the east bay. The epicenter of todays earthquake on the greenville fault was just east of blackhawk. It is a fault line not as famous as the san andreas or the hayward. But has produced moderate earthquakes in the past. This fault is a little more quite than the other ones but has experienced 5. 4 and 5. 8 in 1980. No stranger to modern earthquakes. Reporter d strike slip faults moved about five inches eight miles deep. This scientist believes that this earthquake will follow the standard pattern of aftershock followed by a series of aftershocks. He said unlike the earthquakes in ridgecrest, that doesnt appear to be a precursor to a larger shake, although there is a chance. About a week after the earthquake itself in the vicinity of the original earthquake. After that, the probability goes down. Too much smaller numbers indicate to me see her after that. Reporter the usgs measuring equipment is right at the epicenter there was probably 5 10 seconds of shaking and likely no damage. The greenville fault is a subsidiary fault of the san andreas and has the capability for larger quakes. The greenville fault, because it is limited in its length, we can host about a 6. 9 or so and its largest event. Some suggestion that it can link up with nearby faults. In which case, the area becomes larger and therefore the magnitude of the earthquake can become larger also. Reporter the usgs has seismic equipment of about three kilometers from the center of todays quake. They say theyre getting very good data about the behavior of the greenville fault from todays earthquake and the aftershocks. Live at the usgs in menlo park i am andria borba, kpix5. With a section on our website you can find earthquake resources and tips on how to get prepared. Theres also a link to a simulation of what a 7. 0 quake would look like on the hayward fault. Just go to our website kpix. Com underneath quake. And san jose, crews put out an intense fire inside a highway 87 overpass. Heavy smoke reported just before noon. Highway 87 and willow street. Two lanes were closed all afternoon but just reopened within the last hour. Crews found in the fire burning so hot, over 700 degrees, they had to call for specially trained help and then wait to go inside. Here is a look earlier at the other side of the bridge. You can see the black smoke pouring out where the panel has come loose. Officials say it started inside a service tunnel. We have cooled off then we had a confined space team go in and search for victims. We found no people inside there. All that was inside is a pile of trash that have been put in there and was burning. Officials tell us there is no structural damage to the overpass but there is still no word on why the debris started burning. Firefighters are working to put out some remaining hotspots from a brush fire along highway four. Now this first broke out about 2 30 this afternoon and then it spread into this nearby storage facility. We are told about 30 of those units were destroyed. The fire was one of two in the area. The other temporarily closed the connector lanes between highway 4 and interstate 680. New at 6 a growing number of people around the bay area are living out of their cars. San Francisco City leaders are stepping in with a temporary solution. Joe vazquez is live at the balboa park station were a controversial plan will be tested. Reporter a 22 increase over the last four years according to the latest homeless statistics. Here is an example on johnson avenue there is a man, according to neighbors, been living in this rv for two maybe three years. City leaders have come up with a new concept called a triage lot. Warning tickets are issued to vehicles up and down circular drive. They clearly explain the law, you are not allowed to park your vehicle on the street for more than 72 hours. Shelters, vans, mobile homes that are dilapidated, it is kind of offputting. But neighbors say the warnings are routinely ignored. They cant afford the rent here. They displace and yet they have no alternative but to sleep in their vehicle. We want to provide them with a safe space. Reporter the supervisor is now proposing a Pilot Program in this parking lot near the balboa park station. It would have 24 hour security, bathrooms and social services. He will couldnt just wander and they would have to register their vehicles. The idea is they can come in for up to 90 days. We plug them into our corded entry system for our homeless and more permanent housing solutions. And then, after that time, they are able to move on. The positive thing about it is that it is temporary. And the negative thing about it is that is temporary. There is going to have to be a relatively more permanent solution than this. . There should be people off the street. We found bruce nelson inside one of the rvs. He says he often spends the night in vehicles but insists this one is not his. We think of folks who live along here we go to that shelter . Or prefer to stay along the street . I think they would go. They get ripped off all the time, they rob each other. Reporter the supervisor says they have got the money, but 1 million but it is by no means a done deal. They have just begun to have a conversation with the neighbors and, in fact, on saturday they will have a public hearing starting at about 11 00 at balboa high school. Reporting live, joe vazquez, kpix5. New at 6 scientists are warning the bay area could see more and more days with triple digit heat. John ramose with the cities that can be most affected. Here in Solano County are the highest temperatures in the bay area. Reporter if one Climate Action group is right, things are about to get a lot hotter. The Solano County city of fairfield can get pretty toasty in the summer and when it does, it is hard to escape yes the 90s feel like hundred. When they say 90 a physical over 100 . Reporter that feeling of being hotter it is measured in what is called heat index which combines temperature and humidity to tell how hot weather is really affecting people. A new study by a group called the union of concerned scientists is using the heat index to sound an alarm about yet another effect of Climate Change. We know that extreme heat is already very dangerous in our country, even deadly. We wanted people to be able to see what is coming down the pike. Reporter the study projects how many days different areas will reach temperatures of 90 degrees, 100, 105, and what they call off the charts hot. For example, they say by the end of the century oakland, which historically does not have any days over 100 degrees for average 16 days of century heat per year. Napa does get more now, but the study says by centurys end, it could be averaging 17 105 degree days. We know that extreme heat has been on the rise. And that is due, in part, to the rise in admissions from a emissions from a human sources like the burning of fossil fuels, that is a change we have seen over the past several decades. Reporter brought this woman has lived in fairfield for more than three of the decades and swears things he used to be a lot hotter. Back in the 80s, it was a whole month of 100 degree weather. It was really hot and miserable then. We dont get that anymore. Reporter nevertheless the study says things will heat up as the century progresses and Vulnerable People could die as a result of it. They say the only way to slow Climate Change is to drastically cut Greenhouse Gases by eliminating all fossil fuels. If we dont, they warn, the summer heat could get to be a real killer. If all of this sounds really scary, it is meant to be. The union of concerned scientists is an Advocacy Group that collects the data to lobby for changes in environmental policy. In Solano County, kpix5. Beautiful day to be on lake tahoe. If you are coming up and being on lake tahoe, it might be your best bet and enjoying the lake. The spectacular february snowfall has adjusted the shoreline a bit plus, adults having their own kind of fun that an east bay playground. Tonight the police want to track them down. A live look right now, aboard the uss hornet, the celebration underway to commemorate the apollo 11 moon landing. We have been sitting a couple of degrees above average for this time of the year. Theyll likely have any intense heat but if youre inland it was 95 again in santa rosa, low 90s. Well talk about how things begin to come back down by the end of this week just a bit. See you after the break. There are moments in life that leave a lasting impression. Like the feeling of movement as a new journey begins, or the sight of soft fur, warmed by the morning sun. You might remember new flavours, or a view that defies all expectations. These are the memories that stay with you, long after the moments have passed. In recent years california lakes were certainly suffering from the drought. But this summer . Very different summer of her story of course certainly in lake tahoe. Wilson walker live with how so much water is now changing the shape of the shoreline. Wilson . Reporter epic very of snowfall here at tahoe and we are still getting the echo of that right now. The long and short of it is if youre coming up here for a little beach time. You may need to carefully set up shop. You can see snow on the mountain and is stepping into the lake. Reporter this was exactly the kind of data makes tahoe synonymous with the word blue and right now the lake is delivering quite a bit more blue than normal. The beach was extending down more than normal but because the water is so high they dont have a couple of or only i have a couple of gates open. So dependent on how the gate they have opened depends determines how much water is in the lake. Which is kind of compacted all the people into the small area. I am guesstimating about 15 20 feet. Less beach area to lay out on. But there is more water to go kayaking on. Reporter a reminder maybe the best way to enjoy the lake is on it. The snow left will not last much longer but if youre coming up your, keep in mind the shoreline has changed for the time being. If youre looking for a spot on the beach do your research and pick which part of the lake youre going to be on. There are a ton of beaches still in tahoe, so plenty of room for you to come up and have a good time and enjoy your time on the lake reporter i want to thank shane right at High Sierra Water Ski School for taking us on a tour and showing us how the beaches have been pushed back by the water. The runoff and going to last long, nice warm days appear which one to make you get in the lake. As you saw the beach is a little pinched right now and people huddled up on the side. Through tight quarters there. But again, is there any better way to enjoy this lake than to be out on the water . That is my take away from being up here today. We are live on lake tahoe, wilson walker, kpix5. Take a look at this new video of a dangerous stunt in oakley. A white pickup truck with a small boat in the bed was captured doing doughnuts on the turf of some early park. The city says the driver damaged the landscaping and irrigation system. You may not be getting a waterskiing lesson but it is still looking pretty good. At the beach. We still have as much beach as last year on this time but in tahoe be ready there is one to be less with all the snow melt. Let me show you what it looks like on high, couple of days, i was show me what i will show you what is called. But first let us put some numbers. Need in the low 90s. Santa rosa it is 88. Celebrate being in the upper 80s. He would hit 95. Now remember the fact that you have cooled down. We have the daytime highs right around 4 00 in the afternoon or so. That is important. Now that we have gotten towards the 6 00 hour, the clouds have really started to develop out here and i can show you what this looks like in fact for the highresolution satellite, keep an eye on the peninsula. There were no clouds and then all of a sudden they just kind of appear. Remember how i said we would hit the daytime high around four. They have jumped just enough that the clouds would be able to come out here. You got to lower the temperatures and get to the dew point and we did that.
