companies took action. >> this is a recognition that the social media platforms which have always really just viewed themselves as a distribution network and have been very reluctant to take a stance the communities of all faiths are coming together to remember the victims. >> reporter: on a day of unprecedented grief and mourning in the islamic community, here in the east bay interest else unprecedented, levels of support. a bouquet of flowers sit between slats at the front gatet in oakland. inside even more flowers expressing sympathy and solidarity for the muslim community following the mass murder in new zealand. >> and about 50 ople showed up to our friday prayers, nonmuslims, and as a sign of solidarity they wanted to join us for the private prayer. so people from a lot of synagogues. a lot of churches in oakland showed up, a lot of faith leaders showed up and so it made the pain a little easier. >> reporter: at 14th and broadway a moment of interfaith strength as the jewish community affected just months ago by the tree of life shooting that killed 11 in pittsburgh expressing their support for their islamic brothers and sisters. >> it just shows that, you know, love is stronger than hate and we are here and we're going to stand together. >> we want to show the similar solidarity and commitment that we are in it together. >> reporter: inside the islamic cultural an event typically marked by joy and celebration, but tomorrow a more somber tone and concerns about security. >> we can't control people's emotion, but we have a security plan and the city of oakland graciously offered their police patrols. they offered them today. there were two patrols sitting outside during the friday prayer, so if people were coming and feeling safe and secure and around 6:00 in san francisco on john muir drive near lake struck em both. the 14-year-old was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the mother was also taken to the hospital. she's expected to survive. a man who lives nearby told us it's a dangerous street. >> it's really a big problem here, like people driving high speeds like more than freeway. it's not safe for anyone. >> the driver stopped and is cooperating with police. they told us that sun may have been a factor. new video of a fire at an waonireball in uts rayi dernea a network of pipes at a phillips 66 facility in carson just south of l.a. it took firefighters about two hours to knock it down. no injuries reported. last night we showed you this big fire on bethel island in contra costa county. took a while for firefighters to get there because of some budget cuts. tonight kpix5's christin ayers learned burd three homes. neighbors say the problem is there's no fire station on bethel island and the one that's under construction will likely remain empty indefinitely. lee simpson watched these flames next-door to his home on bethel island consume first one home, then another. >> it's just solid fire, the whole house was just -- i've never seen a picture like that, a house burning that was -- it was like just a matchbox. it exploded kind of. the whole house exploded in fire. >> reporter: minutes ticked by and he was sure his home would be next. budget cuts forced bethel island's fire station to close years ago and the nearest station is now roughly 15 minutes away. >> once a house starts 15 minutes on so bad by the time the fire department gets here that they just try to protect the houses on both sides. his neighbors' homes were lost. >> it's just the time and distance, the mileage to get out to this neighborhood on this island cause an issue with responding out here. however, we are building a firehouse just down the road. >> reporter: in fact, it's nearly finished. in 2017 after some legal wrangling shea homes, the deform of this oakley neighborhood, agreed to spend $4 million to build the fire department near bethel island and pay for a fire truck. there's just one problem. >> we don't have the staffing to open it yet even when it's done. >> reporter: in 2017 the district had three fire stations and only three firefighters per station for a total of nine firefighters on a given night. >> so we're going to have a brand-new fire station, but it won't do us any good. firefighters are going to still have to come from knightson or oakley to get to us. >> reporter: simpson julius' castle sits on telegraph hill and dates back to the 1920s, but 'sbeen closed since 2001. last summer city planners and supervisors approved a reopening, but neighbors filed a lawsuit expressing concern about the increased traffic on narrow streets. now a judge has denied their petition. the owner has been refurbishing the castle inside and out since he bought it seven years ago. it is one of the most distinctive homes in the bay area, but some say the eye catching new additions to the flintstone hillsborough are a yabba dabba don't. the town of hillsborough filed a lawsuit against the owner calling it a public nuisance. the issue is the backyard now a prehistoric scene complete with dinosaurs, elephants. the city is demanding the homeowner remove it all because it was put up without permits. >> i sent her a all right back in january which she ignored and therefore, we had to file the lawsuit because it was clear she was not going to remove any of this work. >> the
