injuries reported. last night we showed you this big fire on bethel island in contra costa county. took a while for firefighters to get there because of some budget cuts. tonight kpix5's christin ayers learned a brand-new fire station is being built, but there's a big catch. >> reporter: tonight there is little more than rubble left after yesterday's fire burned three homes. neighbors say the consume first one home, then another. >> it's just solid fire, the whole house was just -- i've never seen a picture like that, a house burning that was -- it was like just a matchbox. it exploded kind of. the whole house exploded in fire. >> reporter: minutes ticked by and he was sure his home would be next. budget cuts forced bethel island's fire station to close years ago and the nearest station is now roughly 15 minutes away. >> once a house starts 15 minutes on these old houses, it's going so bad by the time the fire department gets here that they just try to protect the houses on both sides. >> reporter: simpson was lucky. his home survived, but three of his neighbors' homes were lost. >> it's just the time and distance, the mileage to get out here, some of the narrow roads that lead up to this neighborhood on this island cause an issue with responding out here. however, we are building a firehouse just down the road. >> reporter: in fact, it's nearly finished. in 2017 problem. >> we don't have the staffing to open it yet even when it's done. >> reporter: in 2017 the district had three fire stations and only three firefighters per station for a total of nine firefighters on a given night. >> so we're going to have a brand-new fire station, but it won't do us any good. firefighters are going to still have to come from knightson or oakley to get to us. >> veto comes just one day after a dozen republicans joined democrats to pass a measure to block the emergency declaration at the southern border. >> we have many miles under construction right now. >> it's for me is a matter of defending the constitution, the balance of powers that is in our constitution. >> trump's emergency declaration allows him to use billions of dollars in pentagon funding to build a wall. it would take a 2/3 vote in congress to overturn his veto and that appears unlikely. young activists filled streets across the country today calling for stepped up action against climate change. protests played out in cities like washington d.c., st. paul, minnesota, and boston, and also in downtown san francisco. >> climate change has got to go! >> thousands of students skipped school to march down market street. there were also rallies in berkeley and alameda. many students say politicians are dragging their feet. >> when we were trying to organize people and we were telling people come to the march, they were always saying -- the most common response was who is going to listen to us? we're just students. we can't vote. what difference can we make? i want to tell
