marella. she is now on administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation. public school teachers in oakland are hours away from going on strike. the district offered a last- minute 7% raise that was rejected. teachers are asking for a 12% raise over three years. a college freshman from sunnyvale accused of creating an app to sell drugs. it offered cocaine, ecstasy and mushrooms even allowed customers to make special requests. the high cost of living in the bay area making it harder for college students to find housing. at san jose state it is so bad, students are asking for the university to take a drastic step. students asking for a place where they can sleep in their cars. >> reporter: this homeless crisis really affecting students at san jose state because they are competing with just about everyone else to find housing, which is getting more and more expensive. students have a list of demands for the university. they are asking for money, bids and interestingly they are asking for parking spaces so students can sleep safely in their cars. students pulling into the seventh street garage in san jose state once only concerned about finding a parking space for a few hours. now, with the worsening homeless crisis, many are looking to the garage as a place to pull in for the night. >> parking spaces will give people a safe place to sleep. members of the student homeless alliance are asking for a minimum of ten spaces be put aside for say parking for homeless students. >> we know there are dozens of students sleeping in their cars and are fearful of having to wake up every few minutes, scared of someone who might come in, police or somebody. >> reporter: last year kpix was reported how a homeless english professor was living out of her car and parked in the same garage. >> it's not going to solve the ultimate crisis but at the same time it is and make an immediate solution. >> reporter: the chancellor's office reported last year that 13% of san jose state student population has been homeless in the last year. >> hard when you are trying to find a place to sleep, find a consistent place to shower. one was james, a homeless student until three weeks ago when he got into housing on campus. he says he would get roused if he parked in the garage so he spent nights in the king library. >> sometimes the best way you get sleep is face down on a table in the computer lab. >> reporter: besides spaces in the garage they are demanding 12 beds in the dorms for up to 60 days and 2500-dollar emergency grants for students to stay in housing if they can't pay rent. students in the university has not responded to the demand. >> when we don't get a response it makes us assume nothing is being done. >> reporter: no one from the university was available to comment on the story, but a spokesperson did say that the university has recently updated its website so students in crisis can more quickly find one-on-one services and the university is also installing a food pantry on campus to provide emergency food and meals for students who are hungry. >> maybe has been ten or 12 years when they built new housing but haven't heard anything about new housing plans?
