on a 40-day limit for the trustees to vote yes or no. >> the elementary school district. >> i'll make sure the board gets this. >> skywalker elementary school district. >> thank you. i'll make sure the board gets that. >> reporter: skywalker, miller creek, more than a dozen names are being proposed to replace the word dixie. >> dixie is a nosym nya remind lynchings and segregation. railroad marni dickson is on the school board district of trustees and says the name has got to go. >> these amazing parents and community members have been working 22 years to do there. >> reporter: the district is made up of three elementary and one middle schools, altogether a little less than 2,000 students and fewer than 40 are african american. >> dixie school district has a reputation of being one of the best school districts in the area. everybody wants their kids to go there. >> reporter: locals say the quality associated with the name dixie is good for the kids who go there and for real estate prices. >> it's a fantastic place. our kids had a great experience there. i see no reason to change the name. >> reporter: now tonight the school district isn't going to actually vote on anything. the folks here can weigh in during public comment, but the district is going to mostly discuss what this petition process will look like and consider the costs for changing the name on a number of signs and other things and the superintendent is expected to tell the trustees here that's going to cost a little under $20,000. geles for day in a ro live in marin, melissa caen, kpix5. ed in downtown thousands of teachers returned to the picket lines in los angeles the second day in a row. they rallied in downtown l.a. demanding higher pay, more school resources and smaller class sizes. the los angeles school district serves nearly a half million students and officials say more than 159,000 students did show up to class today. the first day of the strike cost the district about $25 million because just 1/3 of students went to school. there will be plenty of questions for you to answer on the 2020 census, but what it won't be asking you is your citizenship status. a federal judge in new york has blocked the question from being added to the survey. opponents argued it might keep immigrant households from participating. the judge said the question itself is constitutional, but the trump administration did not follow proper procedure to add it. today's decision is not the final word. a separate case is pending in san francisco and the supreme court is poised to take it up next month. the house of representatives has approved a measure disapproving comments made by iowa congressman steve king. now republicans have also decided to remove king from two committees. in an interview with the new york times over the weekend, king questioned how the words white nationalist and white supremist became offensive language. >> these are not the first time we've heard these comments. that is not the party of lincoln. it is definitely not america. >> that the house of representatives once again rejects white nationalism and white sumpremacy as hateful expressions of intolerance that are contradictory to the values that define the people of the united states. new >> i agree with that. >> iowa's largest newspaper is calling for king to resign. a new york senator, kirsten gillibrand, announced her run for president in 2020. >> i'm filing an exploratory committee for president of the united states tonight. >> tonight. >> the democrat announced the news on the late show. she was just elected into r sethe senate last year. she's been a fierce advocate for the me too movement and a vocal critic of president trump. the 52-year-old corporate lawyer will start campaigning in iowa this weekend. some neighbors living in the burn zone in southern california being told to get out again. that's because with this new round of rain moving in there's concerns of mudslides in the latuna fire burn area. mandatory evacuation orders are already in place. earlier today homeowners packed up and left their neighborhoods in the foothills of burbank. it is the same situation for folks in ventura county where they had the woolsey fire. neighbors in several cities including parts of malibu being told to evacuate. you can see stacks of sandbags lining up driveways in this empty neighborhood, no word yet when residents will be able to return home. chief meteorologist paul deanno has been tracking the big storm headed for the bay area and some watches already being issued, right, paul? >> watches and warnings. a flash flood watch is in effect for tomorrow, not the rain we got today, but the rain we are expecting tomorrow. let's get to the weather computer. this is a flash flood watch for top to bottom the entire bay area, saturated ground, heavy rain tomorrow increasing the flood threat, especially road and highway flooding likely tomorrow. let's take a trip to the mountains where heavy snow is likely, the snow level 5,000 feet. we'll talk about two layers of the hills. 5,000 feet up to 7,000 feet in elevation. 2 to 3 feet of new snowfall with some strong winds. what about above 7,000 feet? glad you asked. blizzard conditions are likely because the winds will be stronger and the snow will be heavier. by friday 5 to 7 feet of snow is likely with very dangerous travel and it's going to be rather windy tomorrow, a wind advisory for our cities and a high wind warning for up to 60 or 70 mile-per-hour gusts in our mountains and also along the coastline. bottom line, tomorrow is going to be a very stormy day. we'll talk more details about how much rain will fall just tomorrow coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, paul. a police standoff in pleasant hill this morning ended peacefully with the help of a robot. it started when a u-haul ran into a walnut creek police car and nearly hit a police officer on foot. officers chased the driver, ended up near the crossroad shopping center in pleasant hill. the driver stayed inside that truck for hours. so police used a robot with speakers, a camera and robotic arm to go ahead and negotiate with the suspect. almost three hours later the driver finally got out of the truck. he's charged with attempted assault with a deadly weapon and driving recklessly while evading an officer. some scary moments in sacramento, a hazmat crew called after this happened. a big rig partially hanging off the overpass there. that's interstate 80. crews say the fuel truck was leaking liquefied natural gas. we're told the truck driver is okay. the big rig was successfully pulled back up. looks back at the miracle on the hudson today marks the 10 year anniversary of one of the most gut wrenching plane landings ever. reporter dick brennan looks back at the miracle on the hudson. but we want to bring you.. a look back on the tenth anniversary of the miracle on the hudson. reporter we wanted to apologize for the technical difficulties we had moments ago, but we want to bring you a look back on the 10th anniversary of the miracle on the hudson. reporter dicnan sp wi some of the pe o lived through it. >> it's amazing. this 10 years has flown by faster than any other 10 years of my >> reporter: when dave sanderson boarded u.s. airways flight 10 years ago, he had no idea it would last all of 208 seconds. the jet had taken off from laguardia with 150 passengers but hit geese and quickly lost both engines. captain sully sullenberger very quickly knew the river would become his runway. >> we can get it there. do you want to try to land? >> it was really when we crossed over the george washington bridge and i heard the captain say his famous words, this is the captain. brace for impact. >> reporter: sullenberger pulled off the greatest splashdown since the apollo missions in part because he said so much went right. >> visibility improved. we had an experienced crew. it happened at a point in the flight where there were viable options still available to us among one of the most densely populated and developed areas of the planet. >> reporter: the captain said one of the trickiest parts of the rescue was getting close enough to the plane to lift the people off the wing and onto the boat. how tricky was that? >> it was fairly tricky. >> reporter: despite their trauma surprisingly many passengers still fly regularly and have taken a message from the moment of their lives. >> the day's about gratitude, this whole day. every 15th of january focus on giving back and that's why i say thank you for everybody, the new jersey folks who took great care of me and all the folks here in this region who took care of all of us that day. >> reporter: sanderson said out of his miracle on the hudson came a lifetime lesson, every moment matters. in new york city i'm dick brennan, kpix5. i'm ken bastida at the live news desk. san jose police are looking for your help. they need your help identifying two wanted men. they are wanted for murder. let's take a look at this surveillance video. police released this video of the suspect just a while ago. you can see both of them were on scooters walking into a liquor store. police say that they responded to a shooting at this store just last month and they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. again, if you recognize that man or the one coming in behind him, either one of those people, san jose police want to hear from you. at the live news desk, i'm ken bastida. back to you guys. scary new video of a close call in minnesota, a 2-year-old girl is strapped into a car seat. there, she falls out of a moving car, but just in time the driver who was recording this stopped and helped the child. police say the girl was not hurt, although she was safely strapped into the car seat. the car seat was not correctly attached to the car. now police are considering charges of child endangerment for the girl's mother who was driving. a monterey county teen is feared dead after a trip to the beach with friends. braxton stuntz. >> where was he last? >> you see this hole? he slipped. >> they're saying he's under over there now. >> frantic moments caught on camera showing friends searching for 18-year-old braxton stunts. the teen was hiking with a group saturday at garraponta state beach when he suddenly slipped and fell 15 feet down a blow hole. friends say braxton gave them a thumbs up on the beach below but then vanished as 14-foot waves crashed around him. drivers were reportedly unable to enter the water due to the rough surf. san francisco mayor london breed is declaring a shelter crisis. it's part of an effort to speed up the time it takes build homeless shelters. breed plans on introducing two new proposals. one bill would allow officials to get around some building code requirements. if passed, the time it takes to build a shelter could shorten by up to nine months. emmy, grammy and golden globe- winner was 9 broadway legend and san francisco native carol channing died today. the tony, emmy, grammy and golden globe winner was 97. here's a look back on channing's remarkable life, her true love and lasting legacy here in the bay area. carol channing would have turned 98 at the end of this month. ♪ well hello louie it's so nice to be back home where i belong ♪ >> reporter: you can't think of carol channing with her wide eyes and trademark husky voice without thinking of hello dolly. the role of dolly levi was her signature and one for which she won a tony in 1964, but it wasn't channing's first time on broadway and her stage career began long before. born in seattle in 1921, channing moved with her family to san francisco when she was just a few weeks old. she took the stage for the first time in the 4th grade at commodore sloat grammer school and again in middle school at aptos. it was 1933. ♪ we want carol we want carol ♪ ♪ when i'm vice president we'll all leave school at 12:00 when i'm vice president ♪ o. >> reporter: we asked her and a former classmate harry collegen if they ever thought then she'd be this famous later. >> i never thought about it. >> i did. >> reporter: channing said she loved him back then, but they drifted apart. >> i didn't no no contact with her for 70 years. >> i was in modesto. you understand. >> reporter: it wasn't until she wrote the story of her life in 2002 that they found each other again. >> he called me. i talked to him. i said when can i see you? i used the 2-inch rainfall total as an example because from santa rosa to napa to fairfield to pleasanton to hayward to santa cruz to redwood city, that's about the average rain and most of it falls tomorrow. more than 100,000 pounds of water in every 1/4 acre yard for the entire bay area tomorrow. it's a lot of rain coming tomorrow. as we look at things calming down thursday, off and on rain tonight. we are wet and windy on wednesday with the strongest weather, the strongest winds, strongest rainfall in the afternoon hours. after lows around 50 degrees highs will make it above average tomorrow. not a great day to get outside, but we'll be in the tickets, sunnyvale, campbell and milpitas, pleasanton 60, very wet afternoon in san francisco. if you can leave work early, do it. novato 58, san leandro 59, lakeport 52 degrees, a very soggy day especially the second half of tomorrow. thursday we get showers in the morning. then things clear out and then the pattern will change. we'll go much drier. there is a slight chance of a shower sunday. aside from that we'll be mainly dry friday through the middle of next week. that is your kpix5 forecast. >> thank you, paul. a trailblazer visits the trading floor, a woman who made history in the olympics gets a special honor in the bay area and talks about what it's like to have her own barbie doll. cut the trading day to a close.. as she rang the bell at the nasdaq in san francisco today: "cheering and bell ringi a groundbreaking american fencer cut the trading day to a close you might say as she rang the bell at the nasdaq in san francisco today. olympics.. and the first to represent the u.s. in a hijab. entrepreneur. >> there she is. she is the first muslim american woman to medal at the olympics and the first to represent the u.s. in a hijab. she is also an entrepreneur. she runs a fashion brand with her sister. she just wrote a children's book and she even has her own barbie doll. it means envisioning yourself doing whatever you want."
