Whether theyre in their homes or in their businesses. For us to come and support businesses like this gives me faith in humanity. A lot of people that are out here live out here. So im supporting my neighbors, and just showing my kids what you can do when you have neighbors that work all together. Reporter this is the ninth year San Francisco has participated in Small Business saturday. In San Francisco, katie nelson, kpix 5. Meanwhile, a protest in san jose, targeting one of the bay areas biggest businesses. Say it loud, say it clear. Google is not welcome here. Reporter a group of protesters demanded the city call off its land deal with goggle and put up Public Housing instead. Google has offered the city 110 million for 21 acres of land, and an option to buy a few more lot nearby. The city says the deal will help pay for housing and transportation improvements, but housing advocates claim it could displace thousands of people by driving up home prices even more. We have tried, and it has been clear they are not listening to the people, and they do not want to listen to the people. So thats why were here on a saturday morning. If they have a problem with the way sam lacardo is doing his job, they should take it down to city hall at his office, and protest there. They shouldnt bring it into the neighborhoods. They shouldnt bring it into his home. They shouldnt involve his family in it. City council is going to vote on the project on december 4th. New drone video is giving us a new perspective on the absolute devastation in and around the town of paradise tonight. The menlo park Fire District and its Partner Agencies sent more than a dozen drone teams to butte county to survey the damage from the camp fire. They flew more than 500 missions in just 3 days to capture this video. You can see lot after lot where there used to be a house. Now reduced to a heap of ash and rubble. The camp fire destroyed nearly 14,000 singlefamily homes in all. At least 84 people were killed. 475 still unaccounted for tonight. But the catastrophic fire is now nearly out after several days of rain. Today, crews resumed the grim task of combing through the muddy debris for signs of the victims who didnt make it out. The people in charge of identifying those remains need some help from the survivors. Reporter the anxietyfilled feeling of having a Family Member missing after the camp fire. Just absolute torture. Reporter Rachel Vaughn and her family are evacuated, and had been searching for her uncle before finally locating him. For the families still searching, signs for missing persons dna are up in the camp fire Disaster Response center, directing families to a colluded secluded area to give their dna samples that could lead to a match with remains located inside the camp fire burn zone. So this instrument right here is an adma instrument. It uses this device. Reporter a Company Called andy donated its technology to make the genetic matches within just two hours of processing the samples. There are hundreds still listed as missing from the camp fire. Andy spokesperson annette matern said they need more Family Members of the missing to submit samples, which is as simple as swabbing the inside of their cheek. We really are hoping that more people will understand this is important in identifying their loved ones. Reporter steve large, kpix 5. 7 inches of rain fell on the fire zone over the course of 3 days, but it did not trigger any major mudslides. What it did do is get us back to more than average in parts of the bay area with the rainfall that we got. Since midweek, oakland picked up almost 3 inches of rain. In pen loman, there were 7 and a half inches over the weekend, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. And up around santa rosa, 2 and a half inches. Air quality last weekend, everybody had unhealthful levels of pollution in the air. This is last weekend. What a difference a week makes. Everybodys got good air quality, and have had it since those rains rinsed out the atmosphere. And theres going to be more of that coming. Future cast shows the next storm due into the bay area on tuesday. Rest of the bay area later on tuesday, and wednesday looks wetter yet. Well have all the details in the forecast in a few minutes. Well, the wet roadways made for some dangerous driving conditions earlier today. A driver in marin was killed when she lost control of her car and slammed into a parked chp patrol car. It happened around 8 this morning on highway 101 near the spencer avenue off ramp in saucalito. They heard the sound of another car, a toyota carolla, skidding right toward them. Fortunately, our officer was at the patrol vehicle, heard it, looked up, and at the last possible sec, was actually able to jump into the back of the patrol vehicle, which saved his life. The driver of the toyota was rushed to the hospital, where she later died. The chp officer was not seriously hurt. A driver in san jose is facing serious charges tonight for an earlymorning crash that killed one of his passengers. A mercedes careened off a curb. That happened just before 2 in the morning. It hit a tree and rolled several times. Firefighters pried open the wreckage, freed four men inside, but a 24yearold died. Chp does think alcohol was a factor in that accident, and tonight officers have some advice for the rest of us. Get a taxi. Get one of these ride shares. Or even better yet, you know youre going to go out. You know youre going to have dinner. Youre probably going to have a few drinks. Plan ahead. Have a socialer drive. The 24yearold behind the wheel will be charged with dui and vehicular manslaughter. Its not clear if the passenger who died was wearing a seat belt. Well, it could be days before we know what caused a golden gate ferry to slam into the dock in San Francisco. Two passengers suffered minor injuries yesterday when the ms San Francisco bumped an outer berth, then crashed into the dock. The ferrys crew will undergo Standard Drug and alcohol testing. But the golden gate Transit District says, at this point, it appears to have been some sort of mechanic call problem. Back in 2014, the ms San Francisco underwent a complete rebuild, costing 20 million. Seven people are safe tonight after being rescued from a boat. It was taking on water in the delta. They were just off Sherman Island when they ran into trouble before noon. Luckily they were able to flag down a crew training near. The crew rescued everybody, including four children. Nobody was hurt. The homeless pet population in san jose got some muchneeded tlc today. The nonprofit vets for healthy pets puts on a free mobile clinic the last saturday of every month, where the homeless can get their animals taken care of. The organization offers free exams, micro chips, vaccinations, and other treatments. They also give out vouchers for free spay and neuter services. I would have lost one of my dogs. They did emergency surgery on a weekday for my carrier. My other dog has a bad allergy. I would have had to put him down if it werent for this place. So im very, very thankful. The organization partnered with the rotary club at san jose animal care and control to put on todays event. Coming up, it is no longer unusual to spot a coyote in San Francisco, but are the critters getting a little too casual about strolling around the city . They were running on fumes in the middle of a raging fire. The california pilot who put their own safety aside to pull off a daring rescue. And its San Franciscos tastiest holiday tradition. The animal did not appear scared. Just minding its own business. It eventually darted toward the school of the arts. Theyre really bold. Theyll get up kind of close to people. Reporter neighbors at Midtown Terrace say they see them all the time. A neighbor shot this video last year of two coyotes in her backyard. They say its very common to hear the coyotes howling at night. Especially after seeing that video, i would definitely want to keep him on a leash and close by. They havent bothered us. I have little kids. I feel safe. Reporter animal experts say coyotes live in almost every part of San Francisco. The only neighborhood where we generally dont see coyotes is the financial district. And i couldnt tell you theyre not there either. Reporter they say the coyote population has been stagnant in recent years. They believe there are more encounters because animals are branching out to populated neighborhoods, looking for food. A San Francisco dog owner says, over the summer, a coyote killed her dog, bella. If youre with an animal, make sure your animal is on a leash or in your arms. You can either scare the coyote away, or you can just turn around and just walk away. Reporter we hear the coyotes howling in the backyard often. Experts remind us that coyotes are not going to change. Thats why we have to change and learn to coexist with them. In San Francisco, im dahl lynn, kpix 5. The bay areas tastiest holiday tradition on display. The Fairmont Hotels famous Gingerbread House opened. The structure is 25 feet tall, 30 feet wide, and includes a private dining room with seating for ten. As tempting as it looks, you probably dont want to live in this house. The up keep would be tremendous. Its made of 6,000 bricks of gingerbread, 1,600 pounds of candy. We love what the fairmontt does. The kids love it. The detail and work they put into it. Pretty amazing. I like the Gingerbread House, because theres so much candy on it. Everybody just loves looking at the santa sheas. The joyce, the smiles. Its one of the best parts about this labor of love. Truly is a labor of love. The fairmont provided this time lapse video of construction. It takes the team 375 hours to create the components of the house. The Engineering Department spends nearly 800 hours building, lighting, and animating it. Its also a greenhouse. Each work, the framework is recycled, and the edible ingredients are composted. Very nice. A sugary little treat out there at the fairmont. Protesters set fire to a mobile shed at a construction site. An rare Elementary School view shows the chaos in the heart of the city. Authorities say about 5,000 protesters were out on the famous boulevard, and more than a 100,000 took part in demonstrations nationwide. Police fired tear gas and Water Cannons to try and disperse the protesters. Twenty were hurt, including four Police Officers, and dozens of people were arrested. Tonight, president macron posted a message on twitter, condemning violence against the police. About 200 people marched through suburban birmingham demanding justice for a man shot and killed by police in the middle of a mall. They now admit he was not their suspect. Reporter a community banding together to demand answers after police in alabama admitted the man they shot and killed was likely not the suspect who opened fire inside a shopping mall. Reporter authorities initially said 21yearold gerald bradford, junior, shot an 18yearold man and 12yearold girl on thanksgiving night. The gunfire sending shoppers running for their lives. According to police, bradford was seen running away from the scene while brandishing a gun. Thats when an officer shot and killed him. Hey, everybody out. Reporter now, investigators are changing their story, saying new evidence indicates bradford did not fire the shots. He chose country first, not a bullet. Amen. And thats all ive got to say. Heavy snow, strong winds could whip up some dangerous conditions for holiday travelers as they try to head home. A massive storm is sweeping across the central u. S. This weekend as we head toward the busiest travel day of the year. Millions of people hitting the roads, like tomorrow. About three million more will brave the crowds at u. S. Airports. Major airlines are already dropping some fees for travelers who need to change their plans because of the weather. This years Holiday Shopping season is off to a recordbreaking start. According to projections from mastercard, overall sales totaled 23 billion on black friday alone. Thats a 9 jump from last year. Online sales set a new record this year as well. Analysts saw a 24 increase to more than 6 billion. And as for what you should not be big, a Consumer Watchdog Group is out with its annual trouble in toy land report. Reporter small magnets, balloons, and slime topped this years trouble in toyland report from the u. S. Public Interest Research group. Ahead of the holidays, the Consumer Watchdog Group tested 40 possibly hazardous toys, and declared 15 dangerous to children. You shouldnt have to be a detective. You shouldnt have to worry that the toy youre giving a child might be toxic or dangerous. Reporter the group says potentially unsafe toys are still widely available, including those with high concentrations of chemicals and potential choking hazards. Researchers found six popular brands of slime contain high amounts of the chemical boron. If you ingest it in moderate amounts, it can cause vomiting, nausea, and longterm Reproductive Health issues. In order for a child to consume 45 grams of boron, they have to eat like two and a half pounds of slime. Reporter ken snyder is with the toy association, a toy group that represents toy makers. He calls the list deliberately misleading, and notes the u. S. Has some of the strictest toy standards in the world. Is the toy industry committed to making sure toys are safe . Absolutely. Reporter researchers found 87 of latex balloons sold on amazon dont have legally required warnings about choking hazards, and the group also urged parents to avoid buying these tiny rare earth magnets. Swallowing more than one of these can rip through stomach lining. Reporter both the toy industry and researchers agree, despite these concerns, toys are safer than ever before, thanks to decades of work by safety advocates. Kenneth craig, cbs news. When the camp fire basically incinerated the town of paradise, the most severe victims were brought here to uc davis medical center. One of them was bill blevins. While hes thankful hes alive, what he saw will haunt him forever. And the dreams that ive had since ive been here, my god. Ive burnt so many times in the fire. Reporter as his third degree burns heal, bill blevins dreams are born out of a nightmare. Blevins was spending the night at a friends home when the camp fire tore through town. The only way out was straight through the flames. The car was actually on fire . Yes. My car was was on fire. What were you thinking . What do we do . Whats next . Run back to the house. Thats the only thing we could think. Try to save the house. Keep it from catching fire. If we can keep the house from catching fire, we might have a chance of surviving. Reporter he said running through the fire was the scariest moment of his life. What was the heat like . Oh, intense. The flames burnt my face and my hands. The flames coming across the road were like a blow torch. Reporter they used garden homeses to fend off the flames. I was watching all the homes around us burn to the ground. Then it set in oh my god, im burnt bad. Skin is melting off my hands. I called my wife, told her, were stuck in the middle of this fire, and we have no way out. I dont know if were ever going to see you again. I love you. I just i dont know if this is going to be my last day or not. Reporter blevins and his friend were able to keep the fire at bay long enough for firefighters to finally rescue them. Burns happen fast, but they get better slow. Reporter dr. Kuna palmiera says blevins was burned over 12 of his body. She estimates his rehab and recovery will last at least a year. He was a lucky guy. He is very lucky. Not everybody is as lucky to be able to escape the flames and have the wherewithal to do what he did. I think were lucky to be alive, because theres a lot of people that didnt make it out. They per i should in their homes or in their cars trying to get out of there. Reporter after getting painful skin grafts all over his hands, blevins hops to get out of the hospital today. Hes looking forward to going home and hugging his wife. What hes not looking forward to is finding out the fate of his friends who lived in paradise. Carter evans, cbs news, sacramento. The fire now is 95 contained thanks to the rain that we got. Pg ande has restored gas and power to some parts of paradise. Today fema representatives stepped in to try to help victims at a town howl in roseville. Several other organizations were also at the meeting, including cal fire and the sheriffs department. Fema also opened a second Disaster Resources Center in oroville on top of the existing center in chico. The diocese of sacramento is lending a helping hand to families affected by the camp fire. For the remainder of the school year, students displaced by the fire can attend the private Catholic Schools in the diocese without paying tuition. Financial relief is being offered at more than three dozen schools. When we heard that the butte county schools were going to need a little more time to reopen, and knowing that families have been scattered across the north in the sacramento area, we just thought it would be good to open those desks to kids to get them back into school. In addition getting free tuition, which usually costs between 5 to 6,000, displaced students will also get free uniforms, school materials, and hot lunches. You and me both, brother. Their firefighting helicopter was running out of fuel fast, but that didnt stop these california heros from putting their own lives on the line to save strangers. And because i just mentioned rain, we will be mentioning it again. Theres more on the way. Well have the details when we come back. A similar incident happened at pinier high school. Officers caught one the white pick up at a nearby shopping center, arrested the driver, and found a loaded gun and a package of cocaine. The suspect is 21yearold christopher nell, and he faces multiple charges tonight. New video out of the Central Valley of the dangers of drinking and driving when a Police Officer in madera noticed a car driving without its highlights, the officer turned around and followed the car. Didnt have to go far. The driver promptly rear ended a pickup truck at the very next intersection. Police say her blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit. Nobody was hurt. We have new video tonight of what it looks like to fly into a fire. A helicopter crew was making water drops over the woolsey fire near mall but when they got a call that people were trapped on a nearby peak. They were almost out of fuel, but Sandra Mitchell shows us that didnt stop them. Reporter with smoke billowing from the charred hillsides, two pilot flying fire four worked out how they were going to attack a line of flames. But even before David Norquist could head for fuel, a call for help. Were going to need to possibly call these folks out. Reporter immediately, they knew they were heading into a tough situation. Those guys are in a bad area. They need to got out quick. Reporter and the danger became more clear as they got closer to the thick plume of smoke rising from the hills above mall but. This is rapidly becoming very ugly. Yeah it is. Reporter the pilot had to make a quick assessment of castro peak and find a safe place to land. Do you see anybody . Theres a guy with his dog down here. Heres the thing. Im too close to these trucks. This is going to be too tight. Im going to go straight up. All right. And well go with the nose in. Dont come any more left. All right. This is not going to be pretty. Reporter with a wall of flames in the distance, they spotted a flat area. Just large enough for the chopper, and smith climbed out, and ran to get the stranded group to safety. Keep the door open. Im going to go run out. All right. God speed. There it is, telegraph hill, in sharp relief tonight in contrast to what things were like last week. Highs today, numbers were mostly in the 60s. San francisco just at 59. Plenty of sun around. High pressure ridge is building in a little bit as we look south from the Sales Force Tower cam. And there it is in living color. Concord 60 degrees, oakland at 56, lovermore 55, and santa rosa, 55 degrees. Rainfall totals, we did pretty well. We dont show it on this map, but ben loman in the Santa Cruz Mountains picked up 7 and a half inches of rain. In oakland, almost 0 inches. Livermore, by the time you got to the east bay, 2 3rds of an inch of rain. At napa, almost 0 inches. And in santa rosa, about 2 and a half inches. Heres whats happening. A little bubble of High Pressure is in between the low to the east and the low to the north, which will eventually deepen and bring in more rain to the bay area tuesday morning. Meantime, it will be sunny. And the future cast bears out the timing on this. Heres tonight. Some fog around the bay area tonight. Things cool down, and the humidity goes um. Tomorrow morning looks mostly cloudy to start. And the rest of the day looks good, too. Monday morning, weve got plenty of high clouds. But generally sunny on monday. By tuesday, here comes another one. By 3 in the and, plenty of rain will be covering the bay area beginning first in the north bay, then sagging south. So to sum it up, rain returns midweek, begins in the north bay, spreads south. Heavier rain on wednesday. Winds will pick up as well. Looks like thursday will be showery. Next weekend looks dry, but that could change. In the meantime, if you want to hit the ice, its happening in san jose under partly cloudy skies, and 64 degrees tomorrow. Ice rink up and running at the embarcadero center. It will be dry and 60. Union square, the ice rink is also in fine walnut creek on ice, 62 degrees. And overnight lows tonight will be in the mid40s for the most part. 45 degrees in san rafael. 41 at livermore, and mid40s for san jose. Sun up tomorrow morning on sunday, right at 7 00 a. M. And for tomorrow, the numbers will be pretty much the same as they were today. Maybe a few degrees of warming in San Francisco. But in general, mid60s will do it. In the extended forecast, were going to be going with sun tomorrow for the most part. And maybe a little bit in the way of cloudiness and high clouds on monday. But then clouds really begin to increase on tuesday. First the north bay. Mostly lightish rain on tuesday. But that just sets the stage. Wednesday, heavier rain comes down. Thursday, lingering showers. Friday and saturday looks again like things are going to clear up, but the models are a little uncertain. It looks like we will get wet midweek. It looks like we will be back, but first we need to take a break. Used clothing is clogging our landfalls at an alarming rate. This was a hole. They made it part of the design. Reporter or remade. This is made from about 20 old sweaters. We see it as an important longterm investment for us. Its a bit hard to rationalize that cost. We do it because we think its the right thing to do, and because we believe there is going to be no Business Done on a dead planet. So we better do the best we can. When you think about the magnitude, does it ever seem overwhelming . Yes. Its daunting. Some days, i try not to get depressed. Some days it feels like were moving deck chairs on the titanic. How many years do we have . Twelve before a catastrophe strikes us. Were trying to model for other companies. Reporter other companies have tapped into the sustainable market, too like patagonia, Whose Program encourages customers to patch up old clothing rather than buy new. Ikea is testing a program to buy back their old furniture. And h and m offers a recycling program where customers get 15 off when they bring in used items. But sustainability expert maxine uda said one out of every thousands pieces sold is ever recycled. The last figures that have come in are showing there are 150 billion new pieces of clothing that are made every single year. You look even at the global population, thats a disposable wardrobe for every man woman and child on the planet every single year. I tend to favor natural material over synthetics. You can see things are pulling. Reporter she says consumers need to be more conscious shoppers. You dont have to be wealthy to make sustainable choices. Exactly. You can learn a lot from the clothes just from looking at the tag and looking at the inside of the garment. And i think thats the take away. Its not about getting a phd in sustainability. Its about finding the clothes we really love, and only using our hardearned money to purchase things were really going to want to wear in the future. Reporter eileen fishers renew program has sold 3 million of garments that would have otherwise ended up in landfalls, and finding ways to refuse rather than throwing away clothing can save taxpayer dollars.
