petaluma station 10 days ago. melissa's daughter fell in the gap between the train and the platform. >> it was terrifying. >> reporter: as the doors opened the little girl got off before her mother and instead of walking this way to safety, she walked along the yellow strip and fell into the gap. >> somebody screamed that somebody fell under the train. wins heard her scream, then it's one of those things where you know your own children. >> reporter: a passenger hit the emergency brake which stopped the train from moving and a conductor jumped on the tracks. >> the conductor went under the train and pulled her out and handed her to me. >> reporter: what did you think? >> i think a little bit of peace but i had my daughter in my hands and i was never going to let go of her? >> melissa is a pediatrician and her daughter was fine. >> the safety strip is a reminder for people not to straddle the train and to walk on this side of the platform. >> reporter: the spokesman says an internal investigation is under way and there are extra markings in red paint to remind people to stay back from the gap. mom is really concerned about the gap. >> mm-hm. >> there's a 7.5" gap that mother and marathon runner is the latest victim of a deadly flu strain in california. katie thomas died two weeks ago. the 40-year-old mother of three got the flu on january 2 and then died two days later. >> she was so healthy and so vibrant and just doing so well in life and you just don't think that a healthy 40-year- old woman is going to die from the flu. >> it is one of the worst flu oroville is expected to file a lawsuit against the department of water resources for damage caused by the oroville dam failure. more than 180,000 people living downstream were forced to evacuate when the spillway cracked last february. the city says overflow from the dam affected roads and infrastructure and dealt a heavy blow to the local economy. time now 4:34. the rain is in and out this week. out properly. north bay also seeing fog in those low-lying areas and fairfield, as well. in fact, fairfield is where that dense fog advisory is in effect. so futurecast actually shows this fog. it's all through the valley locations, sacramento and san joaquin valleys and you can see how it's going to hang around the bay through 11 a.m. this morning and hopefully it will burn off by your lunch break and we'll start to see some high clouds coming through this afternoon and yes, the rain chances will increase late tonight. so we'll start to see rain rolling in by about 9:00, 10:00, it will impact the north bay and then through the rest of the bay area but that dense fog advisory in effect for central california until 10 a.m. right now we are tracking showdowns along 101. this is due to overnight roadwork that caltrans had in place. slowdowns so they are running late with the pickup. they have a due tour. all the southbound 101 lanes shut down at willow road. detours they have traffic exiting at marsh road and then you can re-enter 101 using the university avenue on-ramp there but that's an extra 10 minutes on your trip so heads up for drivers heading through menlo park. photos of the conditions inside her paris home. >> i'm immensely grateful for the young child being willing to make the call to 911. otherwise we wouldn't have had the opportunity to intervene. >> reporter: a neighbor security video shows david and louise being taken way in handcuffed. three children were shackled, all 13 malnourished. >> it stunk inside the residence . it was dirty. >> reporter: the children ages 2 through 29 are now being cared for at two areas hospitals. >> i can tell you that they are very friendly. they're, um, very cooperative. and i believe that they are hopeful that life will get better for them after this event records before moving to california, the family lived in texas. the people who moved into their fort worth home found broken windows, waste on the carpet and walls. at the time they thought the family had been upset over losing their home in foreclosure. now they are not so sure. former neighbors of theirs in hill county are also union square and city hall. >> this is the area. >> reporter: now there's a new way to pinpoint the hot spot blocks. >> you can park for free. >> reporter: the cofounder of the parking app spot angels calculated the number of car burglaries for parking space using crime stats and parking date resulting in the list of the worst blocks for car break- ins. >> i was surprised to see number one was golden gate park. >> reporter: on the 500 block of john f. kennedy drive. it had nearly 300 car break-ins last year or a third of all the auto burglaries in its neighborhood. tuesday afternoons are especially bad. >> i believe it. >> reporter: the areas outside the de young museum where ezra is a security guard -- >> i should be able to leave my lunchbox and not worry about that's going broken into. you know? >> reporter: she and other colleagues formed a neighborhood watch group. >> while on breaks or things like that we sit in our cars and look out for one another. that helps. >> and go to the movies. >> i don't know what you can do unless you have more police and patrols. >> reporter: that didn't work. smash-and-grab auto burglaries soared to 27,000 last year with an arrest rate of 2%. the chief announced a new plan of attack. >> all 10 district stations will have a dedicated -- at least one dedicated person, maybe more, but at least one to focus on this issue. >> reporter: as break-ins skyrocketed, police and the district attorney's office have blamed each other for not doing enough. but a d.a.'s spokesman says his office is doing its part. >> 80% of the arrests that come to us, there is some consequences for the defendant. but obviously, there can't be consequences if we're not making arrests to begin with. >> reporter: he says the district attorney's office is working with police to do more investigating in every smash- and-grab that could pay off in prosecuting the street gang suspected in many of the crimes. >> maybe we don't make an arrest of that individual this time, but, you know, 10 auto burglaries later, we have this person tied to previous incidents and when we do that, that person is going to face more severe consequences. >> reporter: for now, warning signs in the hot spots advise drivers to not leave anything out in plain view. but it's no guarantee. >> my number could come up at any time. >> reporter: william says it are opening at the stanford shopping center in palo alto this fall and looking at opening in larkspur and san francisco's marina district. the company says that the menu will feature all the classics concord at 51. our satellite-radar showing we'll see clouds low clouds out there now but causing visibility to be low in the north bay and at the coastline. low visibility in the area. high temperatures today will be warmer. 60s. foggy in san francisco. lake tahoe in the 50s. partly sunny conditions out there. so we can enjoy the sunshine today. the low in the gulf of alaska is going to work down to the north bay first and impacting the rest of us and what it's doing now is causing big swells out there. we have a high surf warning that takes effect 10 p.m. tonight through 10:00 tomorrow night. westerly swell that's coming from that system out in the ocean and the swell 15 to 20- footers. up to 40-footers are possible. there will be lulls between sets so it's dangerous for walkers. that warning is in effect tonight. futurecast showing when we are going to see that chance of rain. so 11 p.m. midnight or so. early tomorrow morning the north bay will be getting rain. same with san francisco through the lunch hour. then we'll see it work down towards the south bay. friday afternoon picking up again and this one is a big snow event as well so that means high sierra snowfall one to two feet expected at the ski resorts and then another chance of rain sunday night into monday. the usual slowdowns on westbound 580 with major delays eastbound opposite commute direction. this is all due to caltrans. they have one lane closed until about 11:00 this morning. that's between greenville and midway so just a heads up for anyone who is planning on heading into tracy and further east. you will encounter some slowdowns there. 26 minutes between 205 and 680. live look 580 right near tassajara and you can see that wednesday commute getting on its way. here's a look at your ride along 680. and this is just north of crow canyon and you can see that traffic is nice and light. we're in the green no delays as you make your way up towards highway 24 there. if you are heading along the eastshore freeway or planning on heading out the door right now and the ride has you heading along the eastshore freeway, speeds are in the green. we are tracking an easy ride where a fire forced almost 50 senior citizens out of their assisted living facility. fire crews say a commercial dryer caught fire yesterday afternoon at country place assisted living. fortunately no one was hurt. crews say most of the flames were put out by the sprinkler system inside the building. san jose police say that they have arrested a dozen people in connection with a rash of robberies and carjackings that dates back several months. kpix 5's betty yu reports. >> reporter: these are some of the faces behind the wild crime spree in san jose. in all, 7 adults and five juveniles were arrested in connection with at least 30 robberies and carjackings since last summer. police seized 7 firearms, recovered a carjacked vehicle, $2,000, ammo, stun gun, pepper spray and knives, and stolen property including laptops. >> i think it's a significant case. >> reporter: lieutenant paul joseph with the sjpd robbery unit says the suspects are being treated as part of a criminal street gang. their activity is part of a new trend. >> this is something that we're seeing where we have a group of criminals acting together for the benefit of the gang but they don't operate in a traditional gang manner in the sense that they don't identify with the specific neighborhood. they don't necessarily feud with any other group. >> reporter: police served nine search warrants last week. the biggest bust was made here on the 600 block of lotus street, a shooting associated with one of the suspects took place in the street and 7 people were arrested at one home. >> it's really scary to live in this area. and i think we are -- even we are planning to move from this area, san jose particular this downtown area not safe to live here. >> reporter: another major crime happened at mckee and white road. a carjacking with an ar-15. betty yu, kpix 5. a tesla employee faces dui charges this morning after police say he crashed his model 3 in morgan hill. then told them a wild story about what happened. now, this is the car upside- down in a creek. police say that the driver told them that he swerved to avoid a deer and that the crash had nothing do with the strong odor of alcohol coming from him according to the police. 38-year-old colin flynn was booked on dui charges and, um, they are conducting an investigation. police say it took hours to pull the tesla from the creek and there is no sign of the deer. it's 4:57. the department of justice doesn't like the decision the san francisco federal judge made last week regarding the "deferred action for childhood reporter: as break-ins skyrocketed, police and the district attorney's office have blamed each other for not doing enough. but a d.a.'s spokesman says his office is doing its part. >> 80% of the arrests that come to us, there is some consequences for the defendant. but obviously, there can't be consequences if we're not making arrests to begin with. >> reporter: he says the district attorney's office is working with police to do more investigating in every smash- and-grab that could pay off in prosecuting the street gang suspected in many of the crimes. >> maybe we don't make an arrest of that individual this time, but, you know, 10 auto burglaries later, we have this person tied to previous incidents and when we do that, that person is going to face more severe consequences. >> reporter: for now, warning signs in the hot spots advise drivers to not leave anything out in plain view. but it's no guarantee. >> my number could come up at any time. >> reporter: william says it are opening at the stanford shopping center in palo alto this fall and looking at opening in larkspur and san francisco's marina district. the company says that the menu will feature all the classics concord at 51. our satellite-radar showing we'll see clouds low clouds out there now but causing visibility to be low in the north bay and at the coastline. low visibility in the area. high temperatures today will be warmer. 60s. foggy in san francisco. lake tahoe in the 50s. partly sunny conditions out there. so we can enjoy the sunshine today. the low in the gulf of alaska is going to work down to the north bay first and impacting the rest of us and what it's doing now is causing big swells out there. we have a high surf warning that takes effect 10 p.m. tonight through 10:00 tomorrow night. westerly swell that's coming from that system out in the ocean and the swell 15 to 20- footers. up to 40-footers are possible. there will be lulls between sets so it's dangerous for walkers. that warning is in effect tonight. futurecast showing when we are going to see that chance of rain. so 11 p.m. midnight or so. early tomorrow morning the north bay will be getting rain. same with san francisco through the lunch hour. then we'll see it work down towards the south bay. friday afternoon picking up again and this one is a big snow event as well so that means high sierra snowfall one to two feet expected at the ski resorts and then another chance of rain sunday night into monday. the usual slowdowns on westbound 580 with major delays eastbound opposite commute direction. this is all due to caltrans. they have one lane closed until about 11:00 this morning. that's between greenville and midway so just a heads up for anyone who is planning on heading into tracy and further east. you will encounter some slowdowns there. 26 minutes between 205 and 680. live look 580 right near tassajara and you can see that wednesday commute getting on its way. here's a where a fire forced almost 50 senior citizens out of their assisted living facility. fire crews say a commercial dryer caught fire yesterday afternoon at country place assisted living. fortunately no one was hurt. crews say most of the flames were put out by the sprinkler system inside the building. san jose police say that they have arrested a dozen people in connection with a rash of robberies and carjackings that dates back several months. kpix 5's betty yu reports. >> reporter: these are some of the faces behind the wild crime spree in san jose. in all, 7 adults and five juveniles were arrested in connection with at least 30 robberies and carjackings since last summer. police seized 7 firearms, recovered a carjacked vehicle, $2,000, ammo, stun gun, pepper spray and knives, and stolen property including laptops. >> i think it's a significant case. >> reporter: lieutenant paul joseph with the sjpd robbery unit says the suspects are being treated as part of a criminal street gang. their activity is part of a new trend. >> this is something that we're seeing where we have a group of criminals acting together for the benefit of the gang but they don't operate in a traditional gang manner in the sense that they don't identify with the specific neighborhood. they don't necessarily feud with any other group. >> reporter: police served nine search warrants last week. the biggest bust was made here on the 600 block of lotus street, a shooting associated with one of the suspects took place in the street and 7 people were arrested at one home. >> it's really scary to live in this area. and i think we are -- even we are planning to move from this area, san jose particular this downtown area not safe to live here. >> reporter: another major crime happened at mckee and white road. a carjacking with an ar-15. betty yu, kpix 5. a tesla employee faces dui charges this morning after police say he crashed his model 3 in morgan hill. then told them a wild story about what happened. now, this is the car upside- down in a creek. police say that the driver told them that he swerved to avoid a deer and that the crash had nothing do with the strong odor of alcohol coming from him according to the police. 38-year-old colin flynn was booked on dui charges and, um, they are conducting an investigation. police say it took hours to pull the tesla from the creek and there is no sign of the deer. it's 4:57. the department of justice doesn't like the decision the san francisco federal judge made last week regarding the "deferred action for childhood
