Theyre not really celebrating this christmas as they should be because they lost one of their own. He leaves behind a wife and three children, ages 12, 6, and 2. The 33 year old chp officer died on Christmas Eve night. He was sitting with his partner in their patrol car parked on the right shoulder of 880 and hayward when a drunken high driver in the red cadillac slammed into them. Both officers were wearing seat belts but the impact was so severe it left the car crushed. Medics rushed the officers to area hospitals where he was present announced dead. He leaves behind three children, a wife, brothers and sisters, children expecting their father to come home and open christmas presents. Instead he chose to work in the community. Reporter his life cut short as chp revved up enhanced enforcement during the holidays, a time when officers see a spike in dui related crashes. Investigators believe the suspect, a 22 year old from hey ward got behind the wheel. He had too much to drink and maybe too much to smoke. Reporter the officer had been with Highway Patrol for one year and four months. His colleagues call him a hero. He was drawn to the profession due to his courage, integrity, and desire to serve. Andrew was a great man who loved his job and loved his family. Reporter the officer is from tracy. As for the suspect, he is still in the hospital and chp hasnt released the mans name. They say when he is released, he will be charged with several felonyies. Incredibly sad story. Do we know how the other officer who was hurt in the crash, how he is doing this afternoon . He was released from the hospital. He was joined with his wife and learned that the news of his partner dying in the crash. Obviously he is very shaken up but he will fully recover. Thank you. Make sure it has good packaging so you cant see the account number without opening packages.
