Most of the destruction so far has been in Ventura County where the 50,000acre thomas fire a has burned more than 100 homes. Cbs reporter chris marters in joins us now martinez joins us now live from ventura where the firefighters are fighting the flames. Reporter thats right. The winds are not dying down that much since earlier today, maybe a little bit from last night but still very problematic for firefighters here, 50,000 acres and growing at this hour. This fire is leaving behind a trail of destruction, many houses burned to the ground and tonight thousands more still at risk. Ta clarita aerials and winds are whipping this fastgrowing blaze in Santa Clarita. Forcing a major freeway closure. Chris fire Officials Say. Hundreds lost. What punishing wind gusts are fueling flames devouring homes in Ventura County, california. Once the fires breach the inside of the house all we can do is go defensive and prevent the fire from spreading to other homes. Reporter more than 1,000 firefighters are battling the massive fire thats destroyed at least 150 structures so far. And the winds are changing. Sometimes they blow up. Sometimes they blow down a little bit. Reporter Todd Matthews is among tens of thousands of residents evacuated from their homes. Some houses that have burned and you can see that here, but as for our house, we really have no idea. Good friends up the street lost their homes. Its awful. Reporter several School Districts are closed and at one point the santa ana winds reached Hurricane Force gusts of 78 Miles Per Hour making the fight nearly impossible. You get these embers that work their way into the smallest little places through attic vents and a lot of times thats where the fires start. Reporter about 50 miles east in sylmar another wildfire has burned down at least a dozen homes and winds are whipping this fast growing blaze in Santa Clarita forcing a major freeway closure. The firefighters here on the front lines right now are from all across california and they are getting more reinforcement tonight and they are going to need that because these winds, these santa ana winds, they are forecast to remain here in our area through at least thursday. Back to you. Chris, we are hearing that fire Officials Say hundreds more homes have likely been lost at this point. What are you seeing out there . Reporter right. Initially they were saying about 150 for this area. That was their best guess, but there are a lot of areas, neighborhoods, streets they have not actually been able to get to yet to assess the damage. So from the start they thought that number was going to go up. It likely well over the next day or two as they start to really get in there and take an up close look at the damage. We have gone to many of these neighborhoods and in several neighborhoods we have seen dozens of homes per neighborhood. So i expect that number to be high, especially homes, not as many businesses, but you will likely see that number rise as we finally get into these areas to see the extent of the damage. Our thoughts are definitely with those folks tonight. Chris martinez live in Ventura County for us, thank you. If anyone knows what those Southern California firefighters are going through right now, it is these guys. A crew from santa rosa rolled out this afternoon to join the fate. Theyre among at least a dozen bay area fight. Theyre among at least a dozen bay area departments that have teams on the way now. At least 1 million acres have burned across Southern California in 2017, an area larger than the state of rhode island. The state in Southern California is eerily similar to what we saw in wine country as strong offshore winds push the flames along at frightening speeds. We call them diablo winds in northern can. Its a Pressure Gradient directing wind flow from the Sierra Nevada through california off the coast. Same thing in Southern California, santa ana, offshore wind event, similar dynamics, similar type of wind structures and speeds. Coming up not in the clear just yet, new federal charges just filed against the man acquitted in the kate steinle shooting. Plus load up on quarters. Its hard enough to find a parking spot in San Francisco, but now its going to cost you more. One of the bay areas most beautiful vistas now a much easier hike, the improvements just unveiled on the trails of hawk hill. Its going to be a beautiful week and weekend for hiking if you want to get outside. Ill tell you how long this glorious weather will last coming up. In the shooting death of kate steinle. Elizabeth cook is in the newsroom and tells us it is now a federal case. We just got the indictment from the department of justice. There are two new counts, felon in possession of a firearm and felon in possession of ammunition. This news comes the same day San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon defended his departments handling of the case, specifically whether his office overcharged by asking jurors to consider both first and Second Degree murder verdicts as well as involuntary manslaughter. Zarates lawyers argued steinles death was an accident based on evidence the bullet ricocheted off the ground. Gascon said today any failure in the case should rest with him adding hes angry that some have chosen to exploit the verdict for political gain. One count of being a felon in the steinle family themselves have gone over and over the difficulty of watching their daughters death be thrown around to advance political agendas and careers. In the end garciazarate was convicted of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm which carries a sentence up to three years in prison. The Public Defenders Office plans to appeal. Going new at 6 00 it is one of the hardest things to do in San Francisco. Thats to find a parking space, right . Now it looks like it is also going to cost us all more. Kpix5s Susie Steimle with a key vote that came down less than an hour ago and nobody is going to like this, susie. Reporter thats right, ken. You could soon be paying 8 an hour to park your car in San Francisco. To be fair, you could also be paying as little as 50 cents an hour in some meter spaces that are not as popular. Its a new demandbased model. It just passed and it will take effect midjanuary. Ask anyone about parking in San Francisco today and theyll tell you its miserable. It is difficult to find parking, yes, because the city has systemically premoved much parking. Reporter muni parking policy experts believe they have a solution to the problem. Its called demand responsive pricing. Muni launched a Pilot Program to test this out in busy areas in 2011. Heres how it works. Prices for city meter and garage spaces are adjusted based on demand. Right now muni can only change the pricing by 25 cents at a time every three months. So busy blocks can expect prices to go up, but muni officials are careful not to call this surge pricing. Surge pricing only goes up. Demand responsive crisis is just as likely to go down as up. Reporter hank wilson says the pilot study showed more often prices actually dropped. Average rates went down on street by 11 cents an hour. They went down in our garages by 42 cents an hour. So what that showed is that this isnt about just raising rates. Its actually about finding the right price. Reporter people in the castro where the program is yet to be implemented are split on whether it will hurt or help. I think for our customers its going to be very frustrating. Reporter you think this might make a difference . I think so, yeah. Reporter they agree on one thing. I think most people will have to realize the car days are almost over. Well have to start using the muni. Reporter the new pricing structure will also take into account time of day. So, for example, you could be paying 2 an hour at one meter in the morning and when it gets a bit busier in the afternoon, that same meter could cost you 4 an hour. Muni says it will put up all of the pricing changes on its website to avoid any sticker shock. Live in San Francisco, Susie Steimle, kpix5. New at 6 00 weve heard a lot of stories this year about immigration crackdowns. New numbers out of washington show i. C. E. Arrests have surged by 40 nationwide since President Trump took office. Kpix5s len ramirez reports here in the bay area the numbers tell a slightly different story. Len . Reporter thats right. There may be fewer people trying to cross the u. S. mexico border and thats why some i. C. E. Arrests are down, but here thne activity is on the increase. Sts were down 9 . And removals or deportations were down 7 compared to 2016. But hidden n percent incr although i. C. E. Activity has dropped in the bay area, fear in immigrant communities is on the increase because contrary to the message that first came out of the white house, agents are not just focusing on arresting and removing violent criminals. I. C. E. Claims this is a Public Safety threat, but its clearly about more than that because theres more people being detained that dont have criminal records. Reporter overall i. C. E. Made fewer arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants in the San Francisco region which includes most of Northern California and reno, nevada, in 2017. New statistics show arrests were down 9 and removals or deportations were down 7 compared to 2016. But hidden in the numbers is a 10 increase in the arrests of people who have otherwise clean criminal records and whose only offense is crossing the border illegally. Some of the people are the targets of operations. Others are what we consider collateral arrests, people who just happened to be essentially at the wrong place at the wrong time where i. C. E. Is and i. C. E. Is able to prove that theyre undocumented. So they get detained. Reporter San Jose Community groups have formed Rapid Response teams with a special hotline to help families of those being arrested. Often the only thing that can be done is to request a Detention Center closer to home. People are in shock and need guidance. They dont know where to find their family member. Thats the hardest thing that they face actually is how to even contact them. Reporter now sometimes the people who are arrested by i. C. E. Are sent back to their countries of origin almost immediately the next day in some cases, but others who choose to contest their cases are held in detention for six months up to a year or more while they wait for their cases to be heard. In our top story at 6 30 the Supreme Court and closely watched case involving cake. Justices are hearing from a colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same sex couple. Melissa caen joins us now with a case pitting religious liberty against anti discrimination. Melissa . Weve all heard about this case, very exciting case today. People have lined up for days in the freezing cold in washington d. C. Just to get a seat inside the court today. The argument did not disappoint. Justices were really animated. They talked over one another and sometimes they barely gave the lawyers time to speak. Its hard to believe this all started with a cake. Masterpiece cakeshop near denver. [sot David Mullins, plantiff] 201712 asked who the cake we were mortified and humiliated. In 2012 David Mullins and Charlie Craig wanted to celebrate their marriage and for the cake they went to the Masterpiece Cake shop near denver. He asked who the cake was for. We told him it was for us and immediately he informed us he would not make a cake for a same sex wedding. The owner, jack phillip, said he offered to sell the men anything in the shop that was already made, but he would not create a cake. I was allowed to use my artistic vision to create works of art that are beautiful and distinctive and that mark the beginning of something sacred. Jack said he routinely turns down jobs that violate his religious belief. I dont create cakes for halloween, promote sexual or antiamerican themes or disparage people including people who identify as lgbt. Today the justices struggled to come up with a rule to settle this issue. Jacks lawyer Christian Wagner argued that the government should not force artists to violate their beliefs. That same religious faith that inspires him also insures that he doesnt create cakes that express messages that violate his conscience. But david cole, lawyer for the couple, asked the court where will this all end . Could a photographer refuse to take a picture of a female ceo because he believes a womans place is in the home . Once you open yourself to the public and provide general across the board services, you cant single out people based on their identity. Reporter Carlos Correa on his strange fight with the county sheriff. Reporter in a letter to county administrators san joaquins chief forensic pathologist who discovered a brain disease and whose story was captured in the movie concussion announced hes resigning from his position. He resigned this morning because he was tired of hearing the lies and denial from the sheriff. Reporter much like his colleague, dr. Susan parson, who resigned last week, omalu alleges the sheriff, steve moore, made calculated attempts to control him as a physician and started influencing his professional judgment since 2007. He had decided on a manner of death and later changed it without their knowledge. Reporter parson supplied a 50 plus page document supporting her allegations against the sheriff showing the manner of death in autopsy reports were changed and how the sheriff ordered a technician to remove a persons hands without the doctors knowledge. Last week moore denied all allegations. Ive not understood where she was coming from on several of her concerns. Reporter long time critics of the sheriff say the allegations are of no surprise. To anybody familiar with sheriff steve moores behavior, this fits a longstanding pattern of just outrageous behavior. Reporter dr. Omalu also writes the sheriff told the doctors many times as long as they worked for the sheriff, they must do anything and everything he asked even when they considered the sheriffs actions against their standards of practice. With the integrity of the Coroners Office and the integrity of the Evidence Room under fire for the fbi and the attorney general, they need to come in. Dr. Omalu will leave in march. He plans to stop performing autopsies right away so that he can complete and close over 150 pending and open cases. Ting jokes like men are trash 5 , all men are useless if men didn i want to start every morning with great news. Comedian kayla avery has been banned from facebook so many times shes come up with a term for it, facebook jail, for writing jokes like men are trash, all men are useless and just imagine if men didnt exist. If in your Community Center you say you make exception for sarcasm in comedy, well, then saying like men are the worst, that would be a hyperbolic like sarcastic statement. It really started getting serious for her when she wrote a comment men are scum. Facebook blocked her for 30 days saying they remove posts that attack people among other things on gender. She thinks white men are treated as a protected class. To make that equal to somebody attacking women who are already the subordinated group i think is a false equivalent. I think to protect white men as a group as a whole is looking at society in a vacuum and thats not how things work. Kayla started a be with called facebookjail. Com to highlight their stories. For example, when comedian amy shanker decided to test facebook by writing women are scum and got her friends to report it, the post actually stayed up, but when comedian ray sonni reported a post by another user that said kill yourself n word, nothing happened. However, when kayla was trying to raise awareness for her facebook Jail Campaign and said its all a charade so they can protect fragile mens feelings, yeah, she got banned for that, too. California at this hour. Where several winddriven wildfires continue to burn out of control. At least 150 this is the scene in Southern California this hour, just a mess, several wind driven wildfires continuing to burn out of control, at least 150 homes destroyed, thousands more threatened tonight. Cbs reporter Chris Martinez is in the thick of it all and joins us again from Ventura County where the largest of those fires continues to burn out of control. Chris . Wing the view de the truck reporter ken, powerful winds are continuing to help this fire grow tonight, 50,000 acres and still growing and hundreds of homes destroyed just like this one here. This is one of the neighborhoods where we have found a lot of homes that have burned to the ground, nearly 30,000 people remaining evacuated tonight. Many of them just do not know if their home is still standing. About 1,000 firefighters on the front lines here, these firefighters from all throughout california and more are on the way. They are certainly going to need the help because the strong santa ana winds that really helped this fire explode, they are forecasted to remain in this area for the next couple of days. Ken, back to you. Chris, were hearing that, you know, fire officials suspect that hundreds more homes could be lost in all this beyond the 150 that are already reported. Based on what youre seeing out there, based on your experience driving around with your crew there, do you expect that number to go up . Now a young man is being reporter absolutely. I think it will go up over the next couple of days as they start to get into these areas that they have not been able to get into yet. The firefighters have been so focused on just trying to protect what homes they could and trying to stop the fire from growing. They havent even gotten to the point where theyve really started doing thorough damage assessment. So that 150 number is a good basis, but i would say for sure well see that go up based on what were seeing where we have been into neighborhoods where in individual neighborhoods we have seen dozens of homes her neighborhood. So i per neighborhood. So i bet that number will go up and well see the tally start to come in probably over the next 24 to 48 hours or so. The wind continues to blow. Chris martinez reporting live from ventura, thank you. There was a small fire in vallejo today and now a young man is credited with saving a 94yearold womans life. Her home on valle vista street went up in flames before 8 30 this morning. Crews say passing motorist Wayne Mackenzie stormed in and rescued her. The fire started in the garage and left a significant amount of damage. The woman was treated for minor burn injuries. San francisco 49ers giving back this Holiday Season in a big way, several players took a group of kids shopping in san jose. Thats all thanks to visas annual shop with a player event. What a thrill, right . Kids from the boys and girls club of Silicon Valley decorated their shopping carts and then got to roam the aisles of target with those superstars. Together they shopped for sporting equipment, toys, supplies for their after school programs, but that is not all. Theyre also getting gifts for sports clubs devastated by the wine country wildfires. Those people up there have been through so much the last few months and, you know, trying to pick up the pieces and put their lives back together. Its got to be hard for them during the holidays, but if we can help out and give any assistance, were happy to do that. The players also wrote personal messages to the sports clubs to go with those gifts. All for a good cause. It was definitely nice out there for that today. It was. Its starting to feel more like the holidays as temperatures start to cool off, although it was a little bit warmer than it normally is this time of year. This High Pressure system right here is the reason why were seeing those clear skies and mild temperatures. Its keeping this weather pattern in place. Unfortunately, though, for Southern California that low pressure system right there is whats responsible for the santa ana winds kicking up all that fire in Southern California. This stays in place pretty much the rest of the week. So a chilly night tonight, patchy frost in most areas of the bay, a possible freeze warning in the north bay. We will remain dry now, plenty of sunshine, mild and beautiful. It will be a really nice week. Our high temperatures are about 7 degrees above average at the mid to low 60s today.
