We are looking into a series of hearings and interviews and making sure we get toll bottom of it. When washington wont lead, we will. Reporter that was senator Kevin De Leon from los angeles. Earlier this month, he said he hoped to investigate on a state level regardless of the latest judiciary hearing. And the Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing is starting at 2 30 this afternoon eastern time in washington, dc. Again with some representatives from top Internet Companies like google, twitter, facebook this hearing today, this is the first of a series of three this week. Reporting live from menlo park, Sandra Osborne, kpix 5. That tech hearing comes as washington is buzzing over charges brought against three trump associate by special prosecutor robert mueller. The white house expected this week to be dominated by news of tax cuts, a new fed chief and President Trump going to asia. This morning President Trump said to help break it down we turn to our washington insider marc sandalow. 1. Marc, what laws do prosecutors say were broken . To help break it down, we turn to marc sandalow. Marc, good morning. So what laws do prosecutors claim was broken . Reporter the word we keep hearing is collusion because of the heart of muellers investigation is that the Trump Campaign somehow colluded with the russians to try to take the election away from hillary clinton. The charges filed yesterday really beat around the bush about it. Paul manafort who was the Trump Campaign manager is charged with violating the Foreign Agent registration act for not, um, um, acknowledging he was campaigning and he was lobbying for the ukranians. And then this guy george papadopoulos, who was a Foreign Policy aid of the Trump Campaign, pleaded guilty about lying to federal prosecutors. None of that is collusion. But they signal that mueller is going hard after the Trump Administration. By going after manafort the way he did, he is clearly trying to scare or worry others who might be in similar positions that he is going to get you for whatever it is you did if you are not honest about the collusion charges and the papadopoulos charges and most people never heard of him as donald trump said this morning, he has been cooperating with authorities now for three months. Theres thought in washington that maybe he has been wearing a wire, maybe he has been getting others emails. Some people will look at this in the Trump White House and think if they were not telling the truth, they better come clean now. So how removed is the president . Reporter right now, there is absolutely nothing in these Court Documents that points a finger at our president. Its not against the law for donald trump to have talked about meeting with vladimir putin, which is one of the things these documents tries to pin on him. It is against the law for the president or his campaign to have worked with the russians to try to beat hillary clinton. Thats clearly illegal. So there is nothing criminal, its a long stretch to file charges against our president. Do you think this is politically damaging for the president . Reporter the damage is that the odds that something criminal comes out against President Trump are much less likely than that something comes out that President Trump has been lying. Donald trump has lied, spoken untruths, said incorrect things so many times, some people think that wont hurt him. But what hurts him if it shows in these documents and the court cases shows he was working with high level operatives here in the United States to work with russians to try to take the election interest hillary clinton, if that happens, thats precisely the kind of dirty inside politics he has tried to fight against. Thats not going to help him if he tries to claim he drained the swamp. Well see if anything at all comes out of this. Thank you for your insight. Remember, cbs this morning will have Live Team Coverage on the Russian Investigation and the tech hearings on capitol hill and thats starting at 7 a. M. Right after our show. Meanwhile, white house chief of staff john kelly spoke about the moments of u. S. History in a fox news interview. He was asked about the removal of historic but controversial plaques honoring George Washington and general robert e. Lee. Robert e. Lee was an honorable man. He was a man that gave up his country to fight for his state which in 150 years ago was more important than country. It was always loyalty to state first back in those days. He also said had official on both sides been able to compromise, the country may have been able to avoid some of the bloodshed. 6 36 right now. Lets check weather and traffic. Its halloween. Kpix 5s Jessica Flores reports from berkeley with more on the new lawsuit to keep them from getting evicted. Reporter that encampment is here on mlk, jr. , way and adeline street. Take a look behind me. You have probably seen this in berkeley. Its on the west side of the ashby bart tracks. Its been here since january of this year. The folks who live here say that they have a right to stay here and their lawyers say that they want a judge to extend an an temporary restraining order to let them stay here. Bart says a Neighborhood Association and a school in the area asked the agency to clear up the property as theyre trespassing and theres no Running Water, electricity, and it presents health and safety hazards. If the cities were to get together and build shelters for homeless, then we wouldnt trespass. Its not my choice to trespass. Its my circumstance. That sharing 9 a. M. Live in berkeley im Jessica Flores, kpix 5. Today berkeley city leaders plan to discuss a proposal that would make changes to the Police Departments use of force policy. Anne makovec reports from the newsroom. Reporter unpleasant unsanitary downright dangerous conditions. Today the board of supervisors is building on a new lease for a building on potrero hill and considering two properties in the south of market area all trying to move people out of the hall of justice. Workers there have been been begging for it. The halls are dripping with rust, peeling paint and occasionally human waste from a leaky sewage system. It was built in 1958 and it houses the d. Earlier this year we had a sewage flood that took out multiple offices, 40 people evacuated, the entire bottom unit had sewage in the roof to people below. The negotiated lease for the building on potrero hill would get about 500 people out of the building for 15 years for 150 million. If approved, the agreements would allow the d.
