Reporter there are thousands of them and they came to this Community Meeting for answers. But where housing is concerned, there are few. Before the fire, santa rosa had vacancy rates that were incredibly low. 10 , if not worse. Now that the fire has happened, all these homes have been destroyed, how are you going to put them in temporary housing . Thats the biggest question were trying to deal with right now. Reporter the fires in santa rosa and Sonoma County destroyed 6500 homes. There are still about 300 people in temporary shelters and thousands more displaced. Short term and long term housing, this is the tightest market in the United States and we know that. The state, the county and the city. Reporter what fema doesnt know is how theyll handle it. Their first goal is to put people in hotels once rooms open up. Then theyll look for something more permanent. To keep that many people close to home, they still dont have an answer. Trailers, like those we saw in katrina, are a possibility. That sounds like a really long process. Whats the timeline . Thats not going to be a short process. Reporter it could take months or longer, he says, and the further away from home youre willing to go, likely the sooner youll have a place to stay. Tonight all of the fires burning across the north bay are now at least 80 contained with full containment expected in the next few days. But the damage has been done. Tonight the damage total is now at 1 billion and climbing. That estimate is based on insurance claims. It includes more than 5,000 homes and 600 businesses. The rain has been a welcome sight among all the devastation. Some fire victims tell us it literally feels like a breath of fresh air. Its fresh, its new. Its not just rain. Its symbolism. The 320acre fire is 35 contained tonight. 7 firefighters have been hurt battling it. At least four structures have been destroyed. This is what firefighters have been waiting for. Rain. Switching gears in San Francisco tonight, the officer who was run down and critically injured by a suspect has been identified. His family says he is a survivor. Kpix reporter joe vazquez is at sf general tonight. His parents and his sister are by his side right now. The police chief says the officers condition is improving. Reporter hes 32 years old and hes fighting for his life. Officer elia, fiveyear veteran, is married, jujitsu teacher, and a drummer for a local band. Now hes in intensive care with a severe head injury. The officer read a statement from his wife. This situation will be no different, this is not the end of his story. Please, please send him positive energy and love. Police say he was on his bicycle assisting an ve weapons violation when the suspect ran the officer over with an suv. Police later arrested the suspect who was booked under the name marquis johnson, 50 years old. According to court records, johnson faces a long list of charges from attempted murder of a police officer, to hit and run, to resisting arrest. The officer has been injured before in the line of duty. Hes been active with his police union, once speaking before the Sacramento Police commission during the debate about body cameras. Moving forward, i think we should be allowed to use this program as a tool to be Better Police officers. Reporter according to an email shared with friends and family, the officer is showing minor improvements. He was able to breathe on his own for a short period. He moved his body away from pain stimuli. But his brain is very swollen and it will be a while until doctors know the extent of his injury. This family is doing positive. Hes doing better today than he was doing yesterday. Thats a tremendous sign for us that we have hope that well be by his side and help him fight through this. Tonight a student has come forward to accuse two High School Football players of rape. The suspects are from de la salle and Ygnacio Valley high. Those Football Players have been arrested. Thats right. A Police Source tells us the alleged Sexual Assault happened off campus, apparently at a football game, some kind of event, most likely a party. The Contra Costa Sheriffs Department said the alleged attack happened in late september. The victim finally broke her silence this week to her school. The principal sent out a letter today saying our students reached out to our personal counselors this week to report the incident and we immediately contacted local police and provided support service for her and her family. The Sheriffs Department arrested the two boys last night and booked them in to juvenile hall. One teen is a student at de la salle set to be on the football team. The east bay times reports the other boy as a Football Player at ignacio valley high school. Be smart in the future and that doesnt happen again. A lot of drama there. We need to keep going on with the Normal School process. We dont need anymore drama. I hope it gets solved right away. Its alarming. The one thing thats kind of scary these are happening right after the game. This is the second alleged rape in a year. Back in may, a former de la salle Football Player was convicted in Juvenile Court in raping a student on the de la salle campus after a game. Both schools held their own student body meeting to talk about the alleged attack and how to avoid situations like this. Because the two suspects are minors, theyre under 18, police will not release their names. If youre not familiar with these schools, de la salle located right behind me. A former san jose state student is breaking her silence. Tonight she claims she was the victim of a professor who faced several similar claims before he recently decided to step down. Maria medina has her story on kpix 5. He was a person in power and person in position to screw up my life. Reporter shes not ready to show her face or give her name. Youre ruining our life. Reporter but shes ready to tell her story. I was in my 40s. I could handle this nonsense. Reporter she claims shes one of the victims. While going through the san jose state Counselor Education Program in 2013. He asked me out. Literally, he asked me, will you go on a date with me . Reporter she says he held private counseling sessions with her as a requirement to graduate. But the meetings began to feel more like dates. Are you single . Do you have kids . Why are you single . And then he started talking about himself. Reporter she waited to file a claim with the university after she graduated. Something she says she regrets. Meanwhile, she had no idea other students would come forward in 2014 and 15 with similar claims against him. He was put on paid lead when the mercury news exposed the allegations. He was scheduled to teach this year but students protested his return. He resigned one week ago. Im so proud of those girls who came forward. Im really proud of them because at the time i didnt do it. I should have done it. She says she even skipped her Graduation Ceremony to avoid him. As part of his resignation agreement, the university paid him 75,000 but the mercury news says he also cant accept a job within the csu system. Maria medina, kpix 5. John kelly isnt just a 4star general. Hes also a gold star father. Today he lashed out at florida congresswoman frederica wilson. The congresswoman revealed to the press that the president told the widow that her husband, quote, knew what he was getting in to. Today kelly tried to clarify the president s words. He knew what he was getting himself in to because he enlisted. Theres no reason to enlist. He enlisted. He was where he wanted to be, exactly where he wanted to be with exactly the people he wanted to be with when his life was taken. That was the message. It stunss me that a member of congress would have listened in on that conversation. Wilson responded saying, quote, john kelly is trying to keep his job. He will say anything. There were other people who heard what i heard, end quote. Kelly took his defense one step further telling reporters the exact chain of events that happens when an American Service member is killed overseas. Kellys own son was killed in the line of duty in afghanistan during the obama administration. Typically the only phone calls the family receives are the most important phone calls they can imagine and that is from their buddies. In my case, after my son was killed, his friends were calling us from afghanistan telling us. Its about the most difficult thing you can imagine. Theres no perfect way to make that phone call. My first recommendation was he not do it. Because its not the phone call that parents, family members are looking forward to.
