full. >> at paradise ridge winery the scent of singed wine overpowers the charred wood. for the family the smells are a lingering reminder of how much they lost in a matter of hours. >> the entire 2017 harvest is, its, no longer. >> two years of work and nearly 100,000 bottles of wine destroyed sunday night. before they lost power, surveillance cameras from inside the wedding venue caught the fire creeping closer. the family has been growing grapes and making wine here for nearly 40 years. the wine industry in sonoma and napa valley employs more than 50,000 people and at least six other wineries in the area have burned to the ground. >> it's a business not a house. a lot of people lost their house and lost everything. so i think, we can rebuild this. >> the golden hills of smoema anything in the south to the wine country north of san francisco. at least 15 people have been killed. more than 2,000 homes and businesses, have been destroyed. hundreds of firefighters have joined the lines. the fires are nowhere near under control. john blackstone begins our coverage. neighborhood burning and others >> reporter: with some neighborhood burning and others already reduced to ashes, santa rosa is a city transformed by fire. michael everett lost his home. >> armageddon, it is just gone. everything is gone. >> reporter: the flames consume mobile home parks and comfortable hill top subdivisions. luxury hotels and fast food restaurants. in all, some 1,500 buildings destroyed in and around this city of 175,000. jimi hendrix could barely recognize the street he lived on. >> nothing but chimneys standing. block after block after block after block. nothing. all just down on the ground. just black. the whole damn neighborhood is black. >> all that is left of lisa weiland's home a cement slab with imprints of her son's hand beside hers. what remains shocking is how quickly it all happened. >> four structures on fire. residents trapped. >> first responders were stretched, with so many fires, suddenly burning so ferociously. across much of northern california's wine country. cal fire chief, barry bierman. >> during conditions of high wind. a lot of things happen. >> reporter: as victims needed care, fire was bearing down on santa rosa's two main hospitals. >> the hospital was filled with smoke. at that time the police department came in. said, drop everything go now. >> this nurse was among those who helped push patients from intensive care to ambulances. as she was tending to others her own home was on fire. >> one of the nurses put her arm around me. she said, sorry, julieann, your home is gone. everything that point was engulfed. >> you could see your home from the hospital? >> yes. >> reporter: around 200 people are missing in the northern california fires. in napa county, among those confirmed dead are charles and sarah ripey, married 75 years ago. he was 100. she was 98. >> with fires still active around santa rosa and places where embers are smoldering, a fear that went now just beginning to pick up that they could spread this destruction even further. in 24 hours much of california became scorched earth. october is peak fire season in the golden state when the grounds are driest and winds strongest. flames broke out across the state this week because of the perfect firestorm, called diablo winds in northern california. california, and santa ana winds in the south. the winds can gust up to near hurricane strength. racing downslope from the mountains and can send embers a half mile. igniting dry brush all over. what made the fires this week, so catastrophic, wasn't that it hit, but where it hilt. 70 mile per hour gusts in northern california's densely populated wine country fanned flames that left swaths of communities like santa rosa in ruins. jonathan cox is a battalion chief with cal fire. >> the sheer size and scope of the fires right now is massive. >> wildfires since monday morning in southern california, have followed a similar pattern. in anaheim hills south of los angeles, canyon heights drive lost five homes in three hours. even today, fire fighters and homeowners, battled hot spots. deadly, destructive fires could have been much worse. the winds died done today. darren whyacht is with anaheim fire and rescue. >> the randomness of which home has the get, which homes were now confirmed dead. crews are making a little bit of progress.. the largest fire.. the atlas.. is 3-percent contained. 2 other big fires in the area are now one-percent contained. new mandatory
