Following a story at Half Moon Bay where a pedestrian was hit and killed by a chp patrol car. Lanes on the highway are back open after being shut down for the initial investigation. It happened around 8 30 p. M. Last night outside of sams chowder house. Restaurant staff said the man had just finished dinner and was leaving the restaurant when he was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The chp Disciplinary Investigation Team has taken over the investigation. And oj simpson is back to being a free man. The former football star walked out of a nevada prison early this morning after serving nine years for armed robbery. In 2007, simpson and a group of men stormed the Las Vegas Hotel room of the Sports Memorabilia dealer and stole hundreds of items. Simpson said he was just reclaiming his own property. For that conviction, he served a minimum sentence. No word yet on where he is going. But to leave nevada, more paperwork has to be done. Simpson said his first meal will be the in and out burger. Lets take a look at california. And some local news including the weather. Look at this gorgeous view. Kicking off the day hopefully people can get outside and enjoy. It is beautiful out there. Concord, 55. Oakland, 54. Temperatures are a little chilly this morning. 57, San Francisco. 56, san jose. We can expect dry air coming through and the wind coming from the north, which also means temperatures will be a little bit above average. Cooling off as we start the work week. For the rest of your weekend, you can expect dry air and a north wind, which means critical fire weather which i will explain coming up in a bit. Right now, millions in puerto rico are still without electricity. 11 days after Hurricane Maria tour through the island. Many are short of cash, gasoline and clean drinking water. President trump lashed out at the leaders of the island yesterday with a storm he said such poor leadership by the mayor of san juan and others in puerto rico who cannot get the workers help he then added they want everything to be done for them. Actually, i was asking for help. I was not saying anything nasty about the president. The president of the United States can make sure someone is in charge. And another tweet, the president blamed partisan politics claiming that the mayor was criticizing the president on orders from democrats. Meanwhile, bay area residents came together to help devastated victims in puerto rico. They gather last night at the midnight sun in San Francisco. Organizers say they put politics aside and only wanted to help fellow americans in need. We want to focus on helping another country. The president can say whatever he wants to say. Mr. Trump plans to go to puerto rico tuesday to assess the damage firsthand. Twitter executives say they shut down more than 200 accounts for russian controls that were meddling in the 2016 president ial election. They presented as news at closeddoor meetings with the house and Senate Intelligence committee. Correctional investigators say Russian Internet trolls but social media ads and use them to post pictures and stories aimed at dividing american voters. The oklahoma senator James Langford said this week that russians were added again, flooding social media with opposing messages like Hashtag Boycott the nfl and take any. Pushing them out as much as they can to raise the noise level in america. At another hearing, it is set for november 1st. It is interesting. Have you heard of anything down in california. Facebook and twitter are based here. I talked to the president of the senate. Center kevin daly on friday. You said the state is considering having hearings and connecting their own investigations as they are not confidence that congress will do it right. Facebook has shut down 500 accounts linked to russia. Those accounts brought in more than 3000 adds including one bashing the black lives matter movement. The black lives matter cocreator shared her thoughts. Intentionally misleading. In a lot of ways, intentionally racist and designed to generate and gather bad feelings and bad perceptions against black lives matter, against protesters and against these sites. In a recent facebook live, Ceo Mark Zuckerberg said the ads were brought to a Self Service Portal which means a person or a group could buy the ads through this portal without ever speaking to anyone on facebook. That he promised more oversight going forward. Stand up or kneel down. That was a big question surrounding the warriors game last night at oracle arena during the national anthem. Despite some uncertainty, the players and coaches stood. Across the court, players from the Denver Nuggets linked arms. On friday, the nba commissioner released a memo on how nba players should behave during the starspangled banner. The symbolic gesture was adopted by some African AmericanFootball Players last year to to to protest against racial injustice. They are showing unity and that is a good thing. This country needs to be unified. Right now it is separated and divided. I think it is up to the players to decide what they want to do. The warriorss decision to stand for the anthem comes a week after President Trump took back an invitation to visit the white house after steph curry and others expressed doubts on whether they would make the customary visit. All eyes will be on the nfl today to see if the players will stand or kneel during the national anthem. Thursday night, foot all kicked off with a show of unity between the Green Bay Packers and the chicago bears. Both teams linking arms. Aaron rodgers said it was an invitation for fans to join them. The messaging of this needs to be redirected. This is about something bigger than that. An invitation to show unity in the face of some divisiveness from the top. Last week, many nfl players and some owners took a knee, bowed their heads or joined arms and solidarity during the national anthem. Melissa and i asked former San Francisco mayor willie brown where this goes from here. I am not able to predict. What happened on sunday was so extraordinary. It was so centered around what one would have done during the Civil Rights Movement involving Martin Luther king jr. Then, it was a pursuit of equality and freedom. I think what happened sunday was in pursuit of better ratings. Not to be a total cynic but it will depend on what happens with the ratings. I dont think it would be anything right away. But these are players with contracts. These are nfl teams with budgets. We will have to see how this plays out. Will the nfl survived this controversy . Absolutely. But the nfl is a 10 billion operation. They are the best thing going on tv at the moment. What do you think of the owners with the message it went from racial inequality to Police Brutality to jerry jones is standing for inclusiveness and support of everyone standing together . I think they were successful about showing unity with players. They were out there with locked arms. And they were saying, if we have to choose between the president and the players, we choose the players. What do you think . I think what they did was respond to the reality of the people that buy the tickets and the people that watch the tv. This facebook stuff and this business of communicating is really powerful. And they received the bombardment of all the people it changed everything. Where does it go from here . Now that it is on the cover of sports illustrated, is it done . I think the next step will be with the kids in high school and junior high school. They have to change the image. They have been so inundated with concussions and injuries and the violence that comes from that. It changed the nature of the dialogue about football. We are already seeing kids in high school and in these leagues wanting to take any. High school bands everybody is getting in on it. It is interesting to see the the debate. It is important. In school, you have different First Amendment rights. Legally, what a school can do and what the kids can do. Once again, hurricane trump has spun his way through another American Institution and left people and half of it in shambles. Of course, people coming together is nothing new in the bay area. People in east oakland are getting together to get their 72 tackle to get their city to tackle crime. They say city leaders have not done enough to address the problems in their neighborhood. Now six east Oakland Community members with hundreds of members have formed a new organization. It is called the east Oakland Congress of neighborhoods. Just saying, it is not my neighborhood but what can we do together . The congress of neighborhoods will be taking their demands and ideas to city Hall November 7th. Coming up, state assembly men talking about gas sales. Food. Water. Internet. We need it to live. But what we dont need are surprises, like extra monthly fees. I see you, fee, played by legendary actress anjelica huston. You got me, mark. We just want fast internet for one, simple rate. For all the streaming and the shopping and the newsing, but most of all. For the this. Internet for one everyday simple price and no extra monthly fees. Like california to follow their lead and phase out gasoline and dieselfueled vehicles. When the legislature france, the United Kingdom and india are all doing it. Now one lawmaker would like california to follow their lead and phase out gasoline and diesel fuel vehicles. When the Legislature Returns in january, congressman phil king plans to introduce a bill that would ban the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines by 2040. California committed five years ago to bring 1. 5 million zero emission vehicles on the road by 2025. Joining us more to talk about this bill is state assembly men man bill tang. My first question, really . Yes. France is doing it. England is doing it. This is a 100yearold technology. It is like having the most efficient advocates doing bookkeeping for us. By the time it is gone, we will wonder why we didnt do it sooner. We have already got 150,000 or so electronic vehicles. The idea is to lean up the air. We have half of the electrical vehicles in the country here in california. People are just not buying them. Right now it is because we have not produced one that is massmarket adoptable and the price is right. Now we have a chevy and the tesla and a newer nissan coming out. You have models that actually fit consumer needs. If you think about it, 40 years ago we are talking about 40 years ago of the internet was not invented and personal computers were not invented. We had a company at the top of the heap called kodak. Now they are gone. So if you have a good product and something people want, they will buy it. Why not let the market deal with it. Why impose a ban . We are doing our part to create subsidies and interest in terms of electric vehicles. There is no question. At some point, you have to do something about the pollution in the air. When you know pollution is causing this it is saying to the automakers, you have to start moving toward this line. But they are moving toward it. How much of this is saying we tried incentives. And they said no to continuing them. So we tried incentives. We tried breaks and hov lanes. We have done different things. Other people say what you are trying to do is jack up the price of gasoline and that didnt work. And as long as gas is cheap, it isnt going to work. So the only alternative is to say, we are going to make you buy electric. Whether you like it or not and whether you can afford it or not. We are going to keep going with the bill. This next string of legislature as well. To make sure we put more money into subsidies. By the time 2040 comes around, we dont even know if we will be buying cars at all. It is very questionable on whether we will drive cars that are autonomous. If you look at everybody who is looking at the autonomous world, they are all looking at electric vehicles not gas vehicles. Gm purchased a car company. This is clearly where the direction the rest of the world is going. Most of the European Countries are talking about appeared germany, india and china. This is not very farfetched. Okay. If everybody in california had an electric car and everybody went home at night and plugged it in, what would that do to the electrical grid . Do we have the power to handle this . We are ramping up the power. We are talking about building huge amounts of Renewable Energy in california. We know we can do it. It is a matter of making sure we have the world to do it. One of the Big Questions is who gets to regulate this. Before, it was the clean air board. Everybody was afraid they would be putting in regulations behind the scenes that would require people to buy electric cars. You are just a thing straight up what do you think the chances are that your fellow lawmakers will go along with Something Like this . The legislature should be setting the policy not the air board or some other board. We will have a debate. That is what the process is about. So even if we get the cars off, how long does it take before it is total electric. People already have had the cars. Some of the countries that have been debating this are saying that they will ban assail. And then they will not allow any kinds of cars i dont know if we will do that. So we ban assail. What keeps me from going to nevada or oregon and buying the car and bringing it here . Nothing until you have to register and california. So you would not allow us to register . That is one of the ways through registration. That is interesting. I will be watching. I think all of california will be watching to see how much juice you have to take us through the legislature. Thank you for joining us. Assembly mantra 23. Tell us what we can expect today. We can expect dry air to the north. A north wind coming through. Camera bouncing a little bit. There is like a curry. Clear skies. Some light wispy clouds. You can see the camera bouncing around. To the north, it is windy. It will pick up later this afternoon. There is a live view from treasure island. Look at the skyline. Just gorgeous out there. Temperatures are a little cooler. They are going to warm up today before they drop off again by monday and tuesday. Temperatures will drop and rise again. I will explain all of that in a bit. We do have dry air to talk about today which means a critical fire danger. The wind is strong. Above 1000 feet. Wind coming out of the west at seven at sfo. San francisco and hayward getting an east breeze. Fairfield, calm wind. San rafael 13 miles an hour sustained. Heres a red flag warning. Wide range to the north of us. North and east bay hills under this red flag warning. Fires can spread fast with conditions like this. Gusting up to 50 miles an hour especially for elevations above 1000 feet. Not much moisture in the air. We have a lot of dry air coming through because of the offshore wind. When the wind comes out of the north, they are more dry. Similar to conditions in southern california. Seeing clear skies for most of the day. Actually most of the week, we will see a lot of sunshine. A very similar weather pattern. As we look toward the temperatures for today on this sunday, 83 degrees, concord. 83, fairfield. San rafael, 81. San francisco, 74 will be the high. What does this compare to . And normally we should be at 74 San Francisco. We are about 45 degrees above normal today. Temperatures will drop to near normal tomorrow. You can see that in the 70 forecast. Temperatures drop about four degrees monday and tuesday. Then they rise back up again wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday. We have a lot of Outdoor Activities today. The autumn moon festival should be nice in chinatown. Sunny skies and 71 degrees. A good day to get outside and enjoy the nice breeze that comes along with the sunshine. Excellent. Weather on the minds of people in san jose where some neighborhoods are still recovering after the february massive flood for thousands of people getting forced out of their homes. The Water District organized a cleanup yesterday. Hundreds of volunteers along coyote creek removing trash and debris clogging are waterway. The Water District is working on a plan to reduce the risk of flooding in the future. There is no way we can say we can absolutely guarantee this area will never flood again. It has been flooding for decades. What we can do is minimize the impact. Some residents have only recently been allowed to go home , seven months after being evacuated. The warriors are back in action. Quite a surprise that oracle. And all of that is coming up. Wow nice outfit. When i grow up, im going to mars. Were working on that.
