"tremendous ba and mr. trump continued tweeting about the issue today saying, "tremendous backlash against the nfl and its players for disrespect of our country." the white house press secretary talked about the president's point of view. >> this isn't about the president being against something, which is what everybody wants to draw. this is about the president being for something. this is about the president being for respect in our country through symbols like the american flag, like the national anthem and the hundreds of thousands of people that actually stand versus the few hundred that may have knelt. anthem. >> sarah huckabee sanders also says it's always appropriate for a president to defend national symbols like the flag and the anthem. students at a bay area high school held their own anthem protest this afternoon. kpix5's juliette goodrich on why students in alameda say they wanted to speak out. >> reporter: hi, veronica. yes. they actually garred for a peaceful common -- gathered for a peaceful demonstration. it was over the weekend when they reached out to teachers and administrators saying they wanted to do something after school today. >> now i am inviting you to either take a knee or stand for our national anthem. >> reporter: these students wanted to do something symbolic as a way to protect their basic freedoms of speech and expression. they gathered around the school's flagpole while whitney houston's rendition of the national anthem played. ♪ and the banner yet wave ♪ >> reporter: they say they are responding peacefully to president trump's comments in alabama on friday when he suggested that y nfl player who takes a knee during the national anthem should be fired. is this becoming a dangerous game, sports in politics? >> you would have thought religion and politics was the bad place not to talk at the dinner table. now it's sports and politics and who knew? sports is supposed to be that release, that escape, that distraction and now politics is somehow bringing them together in a very negative way. i think what our athletes are doing is symbolic of what the rest of the country is doing. they want to have right now our country's circle is fractured. >> reporter: so today many students were kneeling during the national anthem, some standing and some even left campus. according to these students, all those personal choices today were right ones. >> this is such an amazing turnout and it was so nice to see every single person at our school so united and so happy to be together. i haven't seen that in a real, really long time. >> reporter: some other bay area students taking a stand this evening coming up later in this newscast. the oakland unified school district's honor band will be playing the national anthem at the oakland a's game and they plan to take on their own personal protest. we'll have that story coming up. i'm juliette goodrich in alameda, kpix5. let's go to ken bastida with results of our exclusive poll on the anthem protest. >> in our statewide survey we asked whether not standing during the national anthem is wrong or is it an acceptable way to protest? 46% statewide say it's wrong not to stand while 40% say it is acceptable, but when we focus on the bay area, the results are much different. locally only 39% say it's wrong not to stand during the anthem and slightly more, 43% say it is an acceptable way to protest. no doubt about this one. a large majority statewide, 82%, say it was inappropriate for president trump to call a football player who kneels during the anthem a son of a [ bleep ], but 53% say the issue of kneeling during the anthem is the reason they are watching fewer nfl games. 36% said it's one of the reasons. the question going forward is will president trump's war of words boost tv ratings for games? last night's game between the raiders and washington redskins was down compared to another game in the same time slot a year ago. nbc says about 11% of u.s. households watched it compared to about 13% last year. today lebron james said that he won't let anyone, even the president, use sports as a platform to divide americans. the nba star also said he has no regrets about his earlier tweet calling the president a bum. >> he doesn't understand the power that he has for being the leader of this beautiful country. he doesn't understand how many kids no matter their race look up to the president of the united states for guidance, for leadership, for words of encouragement. he doesn't understand that. that's what makes me more sick than anything. >> lebron also said that he salutes former 49er colin kaepernick for taking a stand and if he owned an nfl team, he'd sign kaepernick today. drivers crossing the bay bridge getting a dose of politics as they pass through the toll plaza. a giant billboard simply saying impeach next to a picture of president trump. kpix5's john ramos spoke to the people behind the billboard. te>>eptha r:orey picture is worth a thousand words, but commuters heading into san francio thismorning were faced with only one word, impeach. >> 1 million people cross that bridge every day. so it's an incredibly strategic place to have a billboard. >> reporter: the message near the bay bridge toll plaza has been placed by a progressive political action group called the courage campaign. what do you want it to do? >> we want to get the word out to folks who are on board with impeachment that believe this person should no longer be president of the united states. we want to let them know there are folk actively working to make that happen. >> reporter: but wait a minute. doesn't impeachment require an illegal act? actually, no. the special prosecutor may be investigating whether any laws were broken, but congress has the power to remove a president that it deems to be unfit to serve, but politically speaking, that won't happen without the approval of a large majority of the american public, hence the billboard. >> so it's our job to help build the political case, the moral case, if you will, for impeachment. >> reporter: political professor of st. mary's college dr. steve wolfer said it's unlikely president trump would be impeached without some finding of significant legal wrongdoing, but then again just getting elected was something that few people expected to happen. >> this is an unusual moment. it's fraught with both opportunity and peril largely because so many people didn't see it coming. >> reporter: it will take more than a bill board to remove a duly elected president from office, but his opponents say they're getting their message out and it's not hurting their fundraising either. in oakland, john ramos, kpix5. >> the courage campaign said the message will be displayed through sunday, but they will keep it up longer if they get enough public donations. a manhunt across the bay area for the toll booth bandits, new clues for the armed they're very concerned because if someone is brazen enough to pull a gun in broad daylight, what else are they willing to do? and those men are still out there. take a close look at this picture. california highway patrol said the two men in this car made an armed drive-thru money grab out of two bay area toll plazas. now the hunt is on to find out who they are and put them behind bars. >> these individuals face charges of robbery. they face charges of grand theft. they face charges of brandishing a weapon. >> reporter: chp said the duo first hit the toll plaza at 4 a.m. sunday at the carquinas bridge, black mercedes, black hoodies, blue latex gloves. they got away with $1,200. then 10 hours later in broad daylight they hit the bay brid just got robbed lane no. 11. >> reporter: that time they took $2,996 before speeding away. >> definitely consider this brazen, although the first one happened at 4:00 in the morning on a sunday, there's still traffic that's going by on the carquinas bridge and then again on sunday it's not as heavy traffic as we this during the commute hours, but at 2:00 p.m. on the san francisco oakland bay bridge there's still a lot of cars and still picture -- pictures one more time. a police vehicle was targeted and weapons were stolen just after 11:00 this morning. oakland police say that an off- duty officer from the taft police department parked off of hegenberger road near a black bear diner. our sources say the thieves made off with a backpack that had two guns and a taser in it. police now say the officer was driving an unmarked city vehicle. turns out the officer was here to help with security for berkeley's free speech week. and two oakland police officers were hurt early this morning in a crash. a ford mustang slammed into their cruiser. the collision happened at high street and international boulevard. the people in the car were arrested. everyone involved will be okay. new at 6:00 developers are trying to rezone san jose's hillsides for large housing communities. >> kpix5's len ramirez reports a private company is using a loophole to get the voters involved. >> reporter: this peaceful pasture in the evergreen foothills of san jose is about to turn into a battleground pitting private developers -- >> there's a tremendous need for housing as you know in the entire bay area and including san jose. >> reporter: -- against city leaders. >> these are billionaires who are building gated communities for millionaires. >> reporter: the plan is to build 900 homes on these 200 acres, land once set aside by the city as a potential hi-tech campus, but the developer, ponderosa homes, would rather build an upscale retirement community here for people 56 and above. here's where the story takes a little twist. instead of going through city hall which can be a long, costly and complicated process, the developer is going through the ballot box essentially asking voters to improve an initiative on the june ballot that would push the project through. >> it's been very difficult to get projects processed in the city for housing specifically and the city has taken a pretty adamant position that they will not change industrial to sosidential uses. kn e behainowg t me tt and frankly will be a very public process. >> reporter: but mayor sam liccardo said the developer is trying to skirt the normal requirements. >> they believe they have a better process than the process that we've all agreed upon. we should all abide by the same rules and that requires community meetings, public vetting of the proposal, abiding by the traffic impact fees the developers typically have to pay in the city, abid ing by affordable housing requirements. >> reporter: some of the big talking points heading into the election is what qualifies as affordable and is building a retirement community for well off older folks the staple as building senior housing? in san jose, len ramirez, kpix5. it's going to be a warmer week this week, right, paul? >> yes. getting toastier the next couple days, big change the end of the week, but the majority of the workweek and schoolwork will be rather warm outside. highs around this ridge of high pressure coming from the north to northeast. that continues keeping us warm all the way to beach. it will lead to milder nights. it's been kind of chilly the past couple nights. tonight lows will be in the 50s to low 60s as opposed to the upper 40s to mid-50s. san jose tonight 57, concord 59, oakland 57, 60 degrees for an overnight low in san rafael and mountain view. we'll be sunny and warm again tomorrow, likely warmer than today with the north bay, a north wind coming down off the mountains warming you up, napa 96 degrees, santa rosa 96, nowhere close to records but 10 to 12 degrees above average. oakland will have 88 degrees tomorrow, fremont 88, san francisco 83 degrees. we will get cooler starting friday, but each of the next three days kind of warm, 70s at the beach, 80s near the bay, low to mid-90s inland. what changes friday? the only thing that changes is the wind direction which around here means everything. we'll get the ocean breeze and will lose 10 to 15 degrees starting friday into the weekend. if you don't like the heat, hang on till friday. it will get cooler. lions, bobcats, bears ready for their close-up, the hidden cameras giving offensive to many of the people within our community. >> reporter: the offending statement? we are all immigrants. it was hung about a week ago, but friday it was taken down. the principal said that's because not everyone is an immigrant. >> people brought to the united states against their will such as african americans, native americans whose land was taken from them and many other historical examples. >> reporter: so the sign was replaced with a new one. >> laurel high school stands united with her dreamers and their families -- lowell high school stands with their dreamers and their families. lowell cares. >> reporter: the banner was put up in the courtyard for students to sign. they said they're sending it to the president. they had no idea saying we're all immigrants would hurt people's feelings. >> this banner's slogan has been used all over the nation, even all over the city for events like these. >> reporter: students who found that earlier sign offensive say they see the good intentions. >> i don't consider myself as an immigrant and i agree with the intentions of the poster and we support our daca students and everybody, you know, but i believe the message could have been made across differently. >> reporter: that's something all the students seem to agree on. >> i feel like the message is out there. it's great we stand together as a little community. i think it was just conveyed in a way that could have been better or improved. >> reporter: members of the student advocacy committee say they hope other high schools will send messages of support for daca backed succeed -- daca. the republican backed succeed act will give undomed individuals a 15 year -- undocumented individuals a 15 year path to citizenship. they would have to pass a criminal background check and pay off back taxes or come up with a repayment man and must have come -- plan and must have come to the united states before they were 16. the justice department found the graham-cassidy bill would -- the cbo found the graham-cassidy bill would reduce the federal deficit by $133 billion by 2026 but cut the number of insured americans by millions. in the meantime another committee hearing on the latest republican repeal and replace effort. it was a dramatic scene as police carried out some of the disabled protesters pleading for congress to keep medicaid. >> we just the ability to implement change that is tailored for their state. >> if you don't like the healthcare you got, you can complain to somebody you vote for. >> reporter: the gop has until saturday to rally enough republican support for a simple 51 majority vote, but it's not looking promising. late monday afternoon senator susan collins of maine announced she's out. >> this bill would actually cause premiums in the individual markets to rise in some states. >> reporter: kentucky senator rand paul won't support it either but did suggest areas for compromise. >> health savings accounts, governors waivers, put some caps on entitlements that republicans can agree to and then let people buy insurance across state lines through health associations. >> reporter: republican leaders were set to meet with the rank and file tuesday before making any decisions about moving forward. weigia jiang, cbs news, capitol hill. the u.s. supreme court canceled its upcoming hearing on president trump's travel ban after he unveiled a new policy over the weekend. the new rules affect citizens from chad, iran, libya, somalia, syria and yemen. north korea and venezuela have been added to the list. the new ban goes into effect october 18th. it has no expiration date. the supreme court was supposed to hear arguments on the previous travel ban on october 10th. now it wants both sides to weigh in by october 5th on what to do with the case. north korea is claiming the u.s. has declared war on the country, but the white house said not true. president trump tweeted that kim jong un won't be around much longer. north rea's top diplomat says that comment gives pyongyang the right to self-defense and the foreign minister said north korea reserves the right to shoot down u.s. bombers even if they are not in the country's airspace. north korea released a new propaganda video showing computer generated missiles destroying u.s. jets and an aircraft carrier. it warns american forces will be headed to the grave if the u.s. attacks the north. the government also staged an anti-american rally and said 100,000 people showed up. coming up anthony weiner weeps in court, the disgraced >> reporter: the west lake middle school in oakland, wilson walker, kpix5. the bay area's guardian angel pararescue team is back on solid ground after two rescue missions for hurricanes harvey and irma. the team is credited with saving more than 1,000 lives since 1977. they're trained to make rescues in places others cannot and they say they came in behind the storm with helicopters and boat teams to get people out and if an earthquake hit the bay area, they are ready. >> especially recently going to see the devastation that occurred in texas and florida, we think about it happening and 25 miles per hour in the hills that is increasing the fire danger. the north bay and east bay hills are under a red flag warning tonight, tomorrow and wednesday, would not be surprised if it's extended into thursday. fire conditions are ripe for problems. we don't want to have fire starts. that's our concern in this. if things do tart, they would spread rapidly because of the -- start, they would spread rapidly because of the weather outside. san francisco overnight tonight 58 degrees. where are we warm and going to be warmer tomorrow? not only do we have an offshore wind, the entire lower atmosphere is warming up because of this ridge of high pressure. it gets closer and makes its closest pass the next 48 hours. we will be warm, widespread 70s to low 80s at the beach. because the ridge is getting closer, 90s are likely inland. the offshore wind is continuing three more days, not four. the transition day is friday. the ridge moves out. the low pressure area moves in, no rain. the only sensible change will be the wind direction changing. the ocean has been chilly and will be all week long, but the wind is coming from the opposite direction now. starting friday the wind comes from the ocean, mother nature's air conditioning cooling us off 15 degrees cooler wednesday into friday. sunny skies even at the beach, no morning fog. then the winds will flip friday and the cooler ocean breeze returns and cools us down significantly. tomorrow way above average, san francisco 13 degrees above average with a high of 83, morgan hill 90, fremont 88, los altos 85, san mateo 85 degrees, warm day, san ramon close on night, antioch, pittsburg, concord and fairfield, vallejo 91 degrees tomorrow, daly city 76 and sunshine, san rafael 93, sonoma and napa 96, the north wind coming off the mountains making you toasty, cloverdale 93 degrees and ukiah 91 degrees tomorrow. we'll stay in the low to mid- 90s inland, 80s near the bay. 70s at the beach through thursday and with that wind change we will be cooler than average by saturday with low 70s near the bay and only a high of 80 degrees inland, but three more days of the hot stuff. back to you. coming up living in two working long, hard days to raise four sons. >> she never gave up. she's always taught us to be strong and leading us to the right path and determining right from wrong. >> reporter: while jerry admits he may not have listened when he was younger, starting middle school at coliseum college prep academy became the game changer. >> they expose a lot to us like college, college, college and college. >> jerry obviously made choices in his life that have already saved his life in a lot of ways, but college is just going to be another one of those choices that will keep moving him forward. >> reporter: however, after losing his father, jerry was devastated when his older brother died. >> i was used to losing people, but when i found out that it was my brother, it was different, just found that there's no future being in the streets basically. that's what he told me. he was glad i was away in school when this went down. >> reporter: he's still healing, but more than ever now jerry is
