a house-to-house search there for survivors begins this morning. and don champion is in tampa. good morning, don. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. as conditions start to improve in downtown tampa, reports of heavy wind damage poured in, and even as irma continues north, it promises to threaten lives and property. irma's strong winds are still pounding florida. even though the storm is slowly weakening, the national hurricane center warns it is still life-threatening with dangerous storm surge, powerful wind gusts, and torrential they had to evacuate 60 residents of this apartment complex after the roof blew off. it will begin house-to-house searches this morning looking for people who need help. millions throughout the state are without power possibly for weeks. and we're told more than 17,000 power line workers are here in the state. some of them will start the process, the very slow and delicate process of restoring service. and, anne-marie, just to give you some perspective of the far reach of irma, even at this hour, school cancellations are being reported as far north as atlanta because of the storm. just incredible. >> wow. don champion in tampa. thank you so much, don. meteorologist dave warren of our miami station wfor has the latest on irma. good morning, dave. >> yes, good morning. we've been watching this all day. category 4 in the keys, category 3 in marco island, and now category 1 is the latest advisory. the wind is 85 miles an hour, and it continues to move north. just a huge storm. these are all tropical storm-force winds. so a very large storm. it will continue to stay that way as it continues to move north. here is the latest radar. what's left of the eye right there. hurricane-force winds sustained, and gusts from coast to coast. not nearly what it was before though. this is as it moves north over land, so it continues to weaken. this is one large feeder band. good thing that stayed just off the coast because that would have given us a lot of rain up and down the coast. right now rain accumulation close to 7 inches close to tampa and we have an accumulation of 6 inches north of jacksonville. a lot of flooding still occurring, and we're talking about storm surge flooding as well. what we're talking about is as the storm moves north, the wind is actually moving back in from the southwest. so all the water that was blown out of tampa bay is quickly returning, and that will lead to some storm surge flooding. the big bend in florida as the storm continues to move north, only about 3 feet of storm surge flooding. a bit more across georgia and south carolina. specifically let's look at savannah. we can see about 3 to 6 feet of storm surge flooding with that wind picking up as the storm continues to move north. now, this is the actual wind field. these are tropical storm-force winds. now look at how they move north but hold together. so we see tropical storm-force winds there in atlanta with a tropical storm warning. so we see tropical-force storm winds there in atlanta with a tropical storm warning. eventually, though, things will top off into a remnant of low pressure in to western tennessee and kentucky. so the recovery begins. but while we're recovering, i want to keep an eye on hurricane jose. it will just sit out in the atlantic. all the forecasters say it will do a little loop, closing in on the bahamas by friday. certainly we're recovering, we'll take our hurricane shutters down, but we'll keep a close eye on jose in the middle of the week. anne-marie? >> sounds good. dank warren out of miami. thank you very much, dave. this hurricane spawned tornadoes this one off the atlantic ocean. it disappear before it came ashore. there was another in pompeii that destroyed six mobile homes, but there were no reported injuries. earlier this morning the storm sucked the water from the north end of tampa bay. it's a phenomenon called reverse storm surge. as the storm approached, winds blowing to the southwest caused the water to drain. tampa residents walked out onto the bay, some of them even taking selfies. more than 160,000 floridians waited out the storm in shelters. john blackstone with more from tampa. >> reporter: even before rain started falling on tampa, people started pouring in to the city's shelters. at middleton high school classrooms are filled with families happy to be in a safe place. three generations of this family are here. >> we were scared like, oh, my god, what are we going to do. >> reporter: middleton high filled its spaces in 24 hours. it all happened so fast even the red cross, said the school's principal kim moore. >> they're stretched very thin. as a result of that, we've had to take on the responsibility of manning the shelter ourselves. >> reporter: for this bride and groom, the evacuation came at the worst time. not the way you planned. >> not the way we planned, but that's life. >> reporter: everything was fine said jessica johnson until haley walked down the aisle. >> what happened is the speakers started blaring. >> may i have your attention please. >> all the people in this building must evacuate by 5:00 p.m. >> reporter: so a stormy marriage can be okay. >> absolutely. >> it can, it can. >> reporter: no matter how inconvenient the evacuation order has been throughout tampa, the message has been the same. stay safe. the entire city is now under a curfew. >> that was john blackstone in tampa. in ft. lauderdale police arrested nine people they say looted sneakers and other items from a sporting goods store and a pawn shop during the storm. looters were also caught on video stealing from a store in miami. there have been at least 28 looting-related arrests in miami-dade county. and several other counties reported arrests of looters taking advantage of evacuated homes. the national guard is evacuating americans from hard-hit st. martin. the storm trapped some 5,000 u.s. citizens. much of the u.s. population was destroyed. roofs were ripped off buildings and entire buildings collapsed. boats and cars were overturned. cuba was also hit hard by irma. havana's famous seawall was swamped. water was pushed nearly a third of a mile inland. central havana suffered the brunt of the flooding. more than a million cubans were evacuated from flood-prone areas. and ahead on "cbs this morning," full coverage of irma with correspondents along the coast of florida. >> and coming up on the "morning news" now, crane collapses. a look at the danger from above on construction sites as hurricane irma sweeps through. this is the "cbs morning news." this is the "cbs morning news." people would stare. psoriasis does that. it was tough getting out there on stage. i wanted to be clear. i wanted it to last. so i kept on fighting. i found something that worked. and keeps on working. now? that means no access to major hospitals. and that is very important. we spoke to the police chief about that, michelle cook. >> our closest big hospital is about 15, 20 miles away, so we don't have any hospitals close by, which, you know, is another concern because we're on an island and the hospitals are so far away. >> so what will people do? >> that's going to be a tough decision. you know, it's -- that's what concerns me about people not evacuating. because if we have high winds and somebody's injured and it's not safe for public safety to get to them or get over a bridge, what do we do? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. conditions have started to improve here in tampa within the last hour or so. there were already reports of wind damage in areas with countless trees down. also in the overnight areas, we saw the glow, the green glow in the sky all across the city here of transformers going up. in the hours and days ahead, the big priority will not only be assessing the damage here in the state, but also restoring the power to the millions of people who lost it during the storm. anne-marie, the largest utility company here in florida says it already has 17,000 power line workers on the ground here. some of them will start the work of restoring power as early as this morning. >> wow. don champion in tampa. thank you so much, don. many residents fled the st. petersburg area ahead of irma, but some rode out the storm in a school building. jeff glor met with them. >> reporter: john hopkins middle school is used to handling students. this week it's been a shelter for those with special needs, many elderly and families with pets who had nowhere else to go. we met 89-year-old irma. your name is what?
