Betty yu is in santa cruz where the police chief spoke just an hour ago and, betty, as horrible as this is, whats smocking is who has been arrested. Shocking is who has been arrested. Betty . Reporter thats right, liz. Santa cruz police right now are questioning a 15yearold boy at the police department. He is familiar to residents here at the tannery. Thats because he lives here with his mom in this very tight knit community that tonight is heartbroken. No one ever wants a desperate search for a child to end like this. Our detectives discovered the body of a young female inside of a dumpster at the complex located behind me. Reporter Santa Cruz Police are confident that the body is that of Madyson Middleton, though they havent positively identified it. 8yearold maddie vanished from her apartment complex on river street yesterday afternoon. She was last seen on Surveillance Video on her scooter. Authorities have arrested a 15 yearold boy who also calls the Tannery Arts Center home. This evening womea distraught woman stomping and screaming in the parking lot of the apartment complex where that arrest took place. Neighbors tell us shes the mother of that teen. From what i know, hes very well spoken and has a very kind manner. So like i said, its just a shocking situation altogether. Reporter tonight it was a tough scene to process even from the most seasoned officer. Its heartbreaking. The last time i stood in front of a group like this and spoke was when my two officers were killed and it feels just like it did that night. Its terrible. Reporter and the police chief also said that at this point its hard to tell if the clothes on that body that was found matches the clothes that maddie was last seen wearing. Tonight they have a long night ahead of them. They tell us that theyll be serving search warrants and processing this massive crime scene behind me. Liz . Betty, the police chief said the body was found in the dumpster. Did he mention if there were any witnesses to this crime . Reporter yeah. The police chief said they are talking to people. People did see that 15yearold boy. Unclear what they saw him doing, but he its unclear what they saw him doing, but he was definitely stone here on the property around the time detectives made that awful discovery tonight. Liz . Now youre an advocate for missing and exploited children. Now we have someone and he lives at that complex with the girl. Now unusual is it to have the suspect be another child . Well, its very unusual, allen. First of all, people generally escalate into these kinds of crimes. You dont start murdering people when youre 15 years old. We do have youthful murderers in our system, but certainly not youthful murderers of other children. Its very troubling. So the teenage boy were told lived at that complex for years. If maddie knew him, if they were friends, parents often say to kids dont go alone, take a friend with you. In this case it might not have been enough . Well, it wouldnt have been enough. What we tell people is check with your parents. Be with another person and trust your feelings. She was with another person, somebody that she probably trusted. You can never be 100 . Theres no question about it. Theres really, i guess, no way for parents to protect against Something Like that. We can never be 100 . What we can do is educate our children. We can put surveillance cameras all around our communities. We can talk to our kids. We can do all of these kinds of things, but we can never be 100 . I know when i saw you a few minutes earlier, we both just couldnt believe how tragic this whole story is. Yeah. Its horrible and id like to offer my condolence to her family. Reporter when they stopped, witnesses saw this, a man kneeling next to his pitbull, at 1 point trying to give him mouth to mouth resuscitation and later binding his bloodied ear with a homemade bandage. This is the second time in a week a San Francisco Police Officer has shot a pitbull and one witness told us he believes the officer overreacted. These cops are cowboys. I think they panicked. Reporter police say they noticed that the dogs owner had some sort of Drug Paraphernalia on him, but when they tried to stop him that dog then charged toward the officers. The officers tactically retreated and discharged approximately two to three rounds at the dog striking the dog one time. Reporter the dogs owner had a different story. No, thats not correct. They asked me to come over to where they were and i didnt have anything on me. Reporter did the dog charge at them . Thats what theyre telling us. No. I dont want to say anything more. Reporter the dog, a 3 1 2 yearold named felony jack, was taken to animal control and is expected to live. Police released the owner who will be cited for allowing the dog to run free. In San Francisco christin ayers, kpix5. The other pitbull shooting happened last week near the mint. That dog was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and is expected to survive. Tonight homeowners on the peninsula are getting letters telling them that they may have to chop down trees, rip up backyard decks, even get rid of swimming pools. Andria borba in menlo park. Whats going on . Reporter this is all about pg es underground pipelines. They say they need access to them and everything above them must be cleared. Sometimes on the peninsula its hard to see the city through the trees. Homeowners in menlo park may be seeing less leafy slade if pg e has its way. I dont shade if pga has its way. Now maddie disappeared yesterday afternoon from her santa cruz home. She was last seen riding a scooter.
