He rolled the case over to trial saying both defendants are responsible for what happened on that night and are responsible for the deaths of 36 individuals, end quote. The final witness for the prosecution testified they had received no complaints about the ghost ship that would have warranted a fire inspection prior to the fire. He stated there were no alarms, spring lers or illuminated exit signs. The defendants disagreed. That the premises were beautiful and orderly and he is threatic and clean and therefore not a death trap. We are confident we can prevail with a jury. We never expected to prevail at this hearing. Its too politically charged of a case. Reporter in closing arts the prosecution says negligence was involved with wood and an illegal staircase that all contributed to the fire spreading quickly in 2016. 36 people died. Their names were read aloud in court today as family members and friends broke down in tears. The defendants both face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. Attorneys for the victims families said its the first step for them getting accountable and justice. The defendants will be back in court on january 2nd. His was damaged and will be out of commission four to six months. We had a fire growing getting ready to go on this property right here. Reporter we rode along with the battalion chief who commanded the response to the fire earlier in week. It was driven by gusty winds and hes keeping an eye on the winds this weekend in case it happens again. Crews have been advised to patrol more in their morris but as of right now we dont see any real threat. Reporter but that can change in minutes which is exactly what happened in the 1991 Oakland Hills firestorm that destroyed 3,000 buildings and killed 25 people. Back then the narrow winding evacuation roads were clogged right now there is one less road to use. Snake road is closed. The dangerous fire conditions claimed the life of a Southern California firefighter today. Cal fire crews solemnly saluted their fallen colleague as his body was take tony the medical examiners office. He was killed on the front lines of the thomas fire line. The chief identified him as 32yearold cory eifertson who has been with the agency since 2009. He is survived by his wife ashley and his 2yearold daughter, evie. Cory and ashley are expecting a second daughter this spring. He was killed south of highway 126 after being overcome by whats called a burnover when flames kind of overtake you. The thomas fire has skarched 379 square miles since it broke out last week. 8,000 firefighters have been assigned to the blaze. A man had to be take tony the hospital after he was bitten by a sea lion while swimming in the San Francisco bay today. The attack happened in aquatic park not far from fishermans wharf. He made it to the hospital where he is in good condition. If they sunk their teeth in they could leave with your feet. Reporter but sea lions usually leave that aggression for fish. I have never heard of anyone going to the hospital. Reporter this is mating season when the animals can get aggressive. The swimmer said he felt threatened and he started slashing water and tried to yell at it to get away when it bit him. Reporter swimmers say splashing a sea lion may not be the best idea. You are supposed to swem away gently. Blowing bulls is a sign of aggression between sea lions. Reporter the boat saved his life. If the boat hadnt been there, who knows what would have happened. Final preparations are underway at San Francisco city hall before the tribute to the late mayor ed lee. A public viewing will happen tomorrow night in the rotunda of the city hall. Funeral services are scheduled for sunday afternoon. A large crowd is expected at both remembrances for the man recognized as a dedicated civil servient.
