and there were rumors of drug and dholalcohol abuse after the death of her mother. she was 22 years old. a carjacking suspect is recovering in the hospital tonight after being shot by san francisco police. the incident happened near sfo near the exit ramp from highway 101. cornell bernard has details. >> reporter: he had a backpack in left hand and his other hand was obscured. the carjacking suspect shot by an officer was unarmed but still posed a threat. it began when the man crashed this white toyota. it was stolen from the long-term parking garage. it belonged to a woman who was running the san francisco marathon. a witness saw the driver leave the accident scene carrying a backpack. a police officer tried to stop him. >> when the officer asked him to place the backpack down, the suspect ran. >> reporter: police say he attempted to carjack the owner of a honda. >> he can hear the original suspect telling the driver to drive. driver refuses. the suspect then bails back out of the car. >> reporter: police say the suspect ran onto the 101 exit ramp and tried to carjack other drivers but failed. an officer says he ordered the carjacker to stop but instead he turned and started moving towards police. >> one shot is fired. it does not strike the suspect. the suspect continues to come at the officer. one of the other officers can hear the suspect saying shoot me, shoot me, shoot me. a second round is fired. it strikes the suspect in what appears to be the abdomen. >> reporter: police say the suspect is in the hospital and expected to survive. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a special honor today for a hayward police officer who was killed in the line of duty. sergeant scott longer was killed. >> on three, longer. one, two, three, longer. >> he played as part of a men's league in the east bay. teammates paid tribute to him. longer's jersey was hung at the dugout his glove and hat placed on first base. >> he was always dedicated. he loved the camaraderie being out here on sundays and at times saturdays as well. >> jackson says the team could have forfeited today's game but didn't because longer would have wanted them to play. search and rescue crews are combing through el dorado national forest for a san francisco teacher. ed cavanaugh teaches at downtown high school, a continuation school in the city. he disappeared in heavily wooded terrain near rock creek trail. he was last seen july 17 when he parted with a friend while riding his dirt bike. family members are worried because cavanaugh has diabetes and needs medication. >> he's such an outdoorsman. he's at home in this land. but we're worried about his medical state. >> cavanaugh's sister shared this picture with abc 7 news taken the day he disappeared and this is the bike he was riding. we want to take you back for a second to the hayward police officer shot and killed in the line of duty. sergeant longer will be laid to rest with full honors thursday. because so many people are expected to attend his funeral will be held at oracle arena scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. and it's open to the public. expect a hot weather week here in the bay area. possibly breaking records. tonight it's mild, though, beautiful weekend. changes coming, though. if you like the heat, you'll love this week. drew has more with live doppler 7 hd. drew? four firefighters suffered burn injuries battling a wildfire. they've been airlifted out and are being treated. previous estimates put the fire at more than 4000 acres but more mapping has downgraded it to 1,500 acres. the fire 15% contained. fiat chrysler has agreed to pay a record fine and to make safety repairs to some 11 million vehicles. and tonight an abc news exclusive. the department of transportation reveals the details of the de and what led to that massive fine. david curly has details. >> reporter: the government had to go to the expense of these crash tests because chrysler fiat refused to share its data 11 million cars some jeeps, dodges, and chrysler cars still on the road with bad axles, ignition switches, electrical problems. fixes that didn't work, consumers note notified. inconsistent and inaccurate information given to the government and consumers. >> there's no way to defend what fiat/chrysler was doing and whether it's matter of co-mission or omission, the reality is consumers were not protected in the situation. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview secretary fox tells us he's slapping the biggest civil fine ever on a carmaker $70 million in cash. $20 million to fix the problems and if fiat/chrysler doesn't perform it could face another $15 million potentially a $105 million fine. were they just a bad actor when it comes to recalls?
