Linking the system in 2009, completing the socalled berryessa extension in 2020. But this next phase is more ambitious, going through and underneath downtown san jose through to santa clara and the project price tag has jumped from around 5 billion to 12. 8 billion. And the completion date has been moved from 2026 to 20 30 to 2037. Former san jose mayor tom mchenry, who has business interests downtown, once supported the project but now is publicly lambasting the vta and says hed like to see the project scrapped and completed with a bus system. The other day, nasa came out and their latest mission to mars is going to cost 11 billion. I said to somebody with another billion, they could get the berryessa mchenry says. If nothing else, hed like outside experts brought in. Theres people who can tell us, will this be obsolete by the time its finished . You know, with with the things that are happening in technology, the fact that driverless automobiles, driverless busses there is a whole number of things way beyond them. You know, my ability to, to predict it. But there are people we can get and we should. The vta ceo and general manager says she welcomes any feedback or criticism, but to insinuate that vta cannot build a project if you look at most projects within this county, vta has built them on time and on budget. I mean, the first phase of the bart extension was built 100 million under budget, over 5 under budget. The vta ceo also says she doesnt believe the critics speak for the federal agency who will fund the project or the public. I dont necessarily believe that the voters voted three times to have their sales taxes go to a bus centric or light rail system to serve Passenger Rail around the county. They want bart. Regardless, the vta is literally going to plow ahead with a groundbreaking in mid june that will start the tunneling process in san jose. Robert honda, nbc, bay area news robert, thank you. Tonight, the Antioch School board may vote on the fate of its embattled superintendent. The controversy stems from a story that our Investigative Unit exposed recently, allegations that Maintenance Director ken turnage, bull hid and harassed employees, including a claim he moved an employees desk to a rooftop as punishment. Heres a photo of him there. And theres that desk on the roof with the yellow tent there. Turnage is now on administrative leave in the wake of our report. The allegations also include what some claim is a cozy relationship with antiochs superintendent, stephanie anello, who has since recused herself from leading any of the investigations. The board president plans to call for a vote to remove superintend anello. Previously, neither anello or turnage would respond to our request for comment. San franciscos north beach may be considered an italian neighborhood, but as nbc bay areas joe rosato jr. Shows us the longtime face behind the counter at one of its most legendary cafes is from a world away. Good morning. Cappuccino grande. How are you doing . One. Im good. How are you now that youre here . Im much better when youve been around long enough. Lets start. You become legend. Hey, patty. Such is the case of north beachs cafe trieste. Opened in 1956 by papa johnny giotta as the west coast first espresso house. Cappuccino is coming okay for nearly half of that historic 68 year run, its been paul major. Nice day today behind the counter. Good morning. Nice haircut. Okay. Cafe latte with oat. Eric, are you alone . Majors own run at the cafe began in 1991. There you go. He was visiting the city by the bay and asked about a job. Talk to the manager for a few minutes, and the manager said, okay, you can start working tomorrow. He got his on the job training from the owners italian sister, yolanda, pretty much my mentor. How to deal with people. Customers teach me how to speak italian. The numbers only in the neighborhood known as the heart of the city, cafe trieste is for many home base in the morning, and the people has been coming here for decades and, you know, since the 60s or 70s. So they still come here every morning. And so its just like a big family. I mean, cappuccino grande. What is your other half . Cabrillo street. And most of those regulars dont even need to order americano with the cream latte. Not too much foam. You want a pastry . So i look at the face and, you know, remember the drinks. Thanks, paul. Youre welcome. Make it hot here. Its only a two person operation behind the counter, so you pretty much do everything you make the coffee, you clean the table. Oh, do the dishes youre making sandwich. You serve the pastries. Im gonna go. Its somewhat fitting. Major was born in indonesia, on the island of java. Drink coffee every day since i was little. Single espresso, one of nine kids. Hes found an extended family here. Morning, tarzan. I know, but its still sad. Eric. Eric, this is their living room. This is their second home. Hes doing it right and made who knows how many coffee drinks. Maybe i serve more than a million coffees, i dont know. Yeah. Drink your coffee before you come here. The jokes and the witty banter he has with the people who come and go, the number of times ive heard him yell to the entire line, to the back of the cafe, sorry, were out of coffee. The tourist is like, what . After decades of giving back to the cafe, one day about ten years ago, the cafe gave back to mage in an unexpected way. I met my husband, karsten here. Yeah, they legalized the gay marriage 2015. We got married 2015. Its a miracle. You know, people dont think this is a big deal, but its a big deal for me. If such records were kept major might be the longest serving barista in San Francisco or even the west coast. The answer is yes. Please but since theyre not, hes simply content with the 33 years of life hes poured into this neighborhood. The customers, you know, theyre my family. Joe rosato jr so far, so good. No complain. Were talking, willie. Were talking bedbugs. They are bouncing back. An east bay family found out the hard way. They asked our consumer investigator, chris chmura, for some help. Kris a bug expert, tells us the bed bug population is rising. And heres one data point from a walnut creek family. Just look at what nathan gaithers family found in a Vacation Rental on their very first night there. All it took was pulling back the covers and looking just at the line of the mattress, and they were kind of all over the place. The gaithers packed up immediately and booked a nearby hotel. A massive cleanup is now underway in several midwestern states after a series of powerful and destructive tornadoes. At least three twisters touched down near portage and kalamazoo, michigan. Hospitals have treated about a dozen injured people, but thankfully, so far, no reports of any deaths or major injuries. Some incredible video here of the tornado damage at this fedex facility. Overnight winds were so strong they ripped huge chunks of the roof and walls off of the building thats in michigan. This all comes after 24 tornadoes swept across the plains on monday. Jeffrey neary is here now. This was pretty intense and it just kept going seemingly. And theres more tonight over kentucky. We could have some large tornadoes. They have this frontal system thats just kind of stalled out. So theyre getting that warm, humid air moving in from the south. Tomorrow goes from dallas all the way over towards atlanta. Theyve been hit. So hard already. They have yeah one system after another for them. For us were kind of on the flip side of things here. We have a lot of sunshine moving in and hotter temperatures. Man, it felt kind of like the weekend out there. At least. You know, you were just kind of relaxed. We had that sunshine. It was really, really nice, lets go ahead and get a look at that weather pattern here. And we can show you exactly what is controlling the weather. Its all about this area of High Pressure moving that storm track to the north and allowing this heat to move in from the south. And check this out. Its going to set us up this weather pattern right here with the warmest stretch of weather all year long, speaking of which, only five weekends with sunshine in 2024, were going to add to that we are locked in with sunshine this upcoming saturday. And also on sunday. Weve got a preview of that in the scrolling 7day forecast at the bottom of the screen, and well show you more on those temperatures here. Once i get through the wind, we are going to see a little bit of wind here. Still kind of hanging on as we head through tomorrow from a system thats over the intermountain west. Its just kind of moving that wind in here from the north and the so i think through tomorrow morning were looking at winds of 20 to 40, especially in the mountains. Then as we head through tomorrow evening, well start to see that wind calming on down only five to about 15mph. So a little bit more wind to go here as we head through tomorrow morning. Otherwise as we started off, were going to begin down here into the 50s. Not nearly as cold as it has been. Were just going up a little bit more. Itll make it a lot more comfortable out here. I will put us to 58 here in the south bay, over to the east bay, 57. And for the north bay 59. Temperatures as we move through tomorrow, going up another 4 to 7 degrees. Thats going to put us close to 90 here for some of the inland valleys, up to 87 in concord, 84 in san jose, 86 in napa. Look at the coastline here. San francisco, 79 degrees and you got some beach weather out here in half moon bay, right up to 70 on a ten day forecast here. While we are looking at the warmer weather this weekend, the one thing that it may certainly kind of irritate is your allergies. Weve got oak, cedar and grasses all in the high category. So just know that coming into the next several days and that ten day forecast here will keep those 80s in saturday and sunday. Warmest day will be saturday at 87. And then were going to hold on to this trend of 80s youll see in san jose right through next wednesday, likely the weekend after that may not be as warm. We could be dipping back down into the low 70s. So we got some hot weather here. You dont have to feel bad about enjoying that sunshine weve had so many years in the past where weve been stuck in the drought. I wanted to show you the latest drought map and we are drought free here through most of the state. Theres just a little bit left down here towards the california arizona border and right up towards the california oregon border. But bay area drought free and we are not expected to head back into one through the next 6 to 8 months. The way the reservoirs and the snowpack and the rain season have all come in for us right here on my 7day forecast, were at 74 in San Francisco on saturday and for mothers day, 69 a little bit of cloud cover returning and through the inland valleys. Not going to disappoint. 89 on friday, 88 on saturday. Dips a little bit on sunday to 83. But that is still very comfortable weather through the next several days. Good for all. Good for all the mamas out there for sunday. Yes, thank you jeff. Up next things are looking up for the sharks. What an incredible time for this franchise.
