This comes after dozens of Police Officers in riot gear arrived around 4 00 this morning to help campus officers clear the massive encampment. The antiwar groups have been calling on usc and universities nationwide to stop doing business in israel. Today, the University Says it warned the protesters of arrest, both in person and through social media. One student journalist says compared with what happened at ucla last weekend or last wednesday, rather today was peaceful. It was definitely the protesters left without arrest, without fighting dps or lapd. They were chanting, they were loud about their beliefs, but they were marched down truesdale avenue to the exit of campus without staying in the tents, without being there. When the encampment was being disassembled and we mentioned ucla crews are continuing to clean up after the propalestinian encampment there was cleared out, a stark contrast to what happened at usc. You may remember last at ucla last week, demonstrators clashed with police refusing to leave. More than 200 people were arrested during that confrontation. Police are maintaining a presence on the campus amid fears protesters might come back to try to set up another encampment. Now on the San Francisco state campus. The encampment that began monday is growing, and folks occupying these tents are excited about an event tomorrow. People at the encampment are telling us that the School President , lynn mahoney, will be joining them on campus for what were told will be an open negotiation. The demands on the university include disclosing and divesting all investments with companies doing business with israel and declaring opposition to what they call the genocide in gaza. It will be hosted here at the quad over our encampment. We are going to be discussing our terms of demands and we are hoping that we come to a concrete conclusion and if we dont, then well continue the work that we are doing. A spokesperson says the demands are nonnegotiable, and were just hearing back from San Francisco state that, in fact, a meeting is on the schedule of president mahoney. Well, not the war in gaza, but Climate Justice was the center of another protest in the east bay. And instead of land, the demonstrators took their protests to the water. They paddled out to the bay near chevron richmond refinery, demanding the company take action to address climate crisis. Now heres nbc bay areas christie smith, who they paddled to shore in richmond and were met with cheers after spending hours on the water. This was a peaceful protest out on the water. We are, trying to coin the phrase chi activism. Alfredo angulo is with rich city raise. What were saying is, hey, chevron, you know, the people of richmond deserve a healthy, safe future, and so do your workers, you know . And so we need to make sure that the refinery is transitioning to sustainable renewable practices. The activist shared videos of them with signs on kayaks, reading pollute no more and fossil fuels and chevron out of richmond. We had a all of our folks go out to the wharf, to temporarily block one of the ships to let them know that, you know, we are the people of richmond, are tired, and we are a force to be reckoned with. Essentially, today we have a very big paddle that is an International Solidarity event against chevron. The kayakers today talked about their position and reasons for doing this, but we also reached out to chevron for comment in a statement today, chevron says it respects peoples rights to express their viewpoints, adding the company is focused on safely and reliably providing energy for the bay area. Their colorful kayaks aimed to send a message. And over on san joses east side, our nbc bay area telemundo 48 float was one of dozens rolling down the streets. In another parade, people lined the route from the mexican Heritage Plaza to emma farm park. Inside the park, another festival and the music, folklorico, dancers and food items in celebration of Cinco De Mayo. Plus, a huge showing from more than 70 local car clubs as they rolled out in hundreds of lowriders for the festivities. Yeah, this is amazing to have the Lowrider Community come together.
