The federal lawsuit was filed today on behalf of two businesses and five residents in the tenderloin. It accuses the city of tolerating encampments and illegal drug markets and not doing enough to address the longstanding situation. It says public spaces have become unsanitary and inaccessible. Residents are not seeking monetary damages but instead they want a judge to enforce the city to do more to solve the issue. We did speak with their attorney. That the city has for years treated the tenderloin as the containment zone for narcotics activity and associated harms without. And that conditions have gotten much worse in recent years. Maybe in part because of the fentanyl crisis. Separately, the uc college of law filed a motion for a court to enforce prior legal action against the city. In 2020, a judge ordered the city to make all reasonable efforts to bring encampments to zero in the neighborhood. In a statement, the City Attorneys Office said they will review the complaint and respond in court but said the city has taken major steps to reduce crime and disrupt open air drug markets. Now to a crash in Contra Costa County. A bus carrying seniors was actually hit by another car on highway four in antioch. Several of them got hurt and they were taken to the hospital. When we heard about it, we sent Jody Hernandez out there today. She joins us live now. My first question is to you. Reporter what started out as a very fun morning of activities at the antioch senior center, turned into something else. Some cars collided. Fortunately, we are told that all six of the seniors on board the bus were able to walk out of the bus with the assistance of the driver and some Good Samaritans that stopped to help. They all ahead to be transported to the hospital. And i did check with the bus company a short time ago. They were trying to check up on the seniors. They told me that they are still at the hospital being examined and being treated. It appeared that the injuries were minor but again, they are still being treated at the hospital. What is sad about this is that it started out as such a great day for the seniors. They were here listening to a live band. They were having lunch. Im told that the driver said they were actually singing when the crash happened. So very, very sad. Are you learning anything else about the crash and how they collided . Reporter obviously, the crash is still being investigated but the bus Company Tells us that the driver reported that the driver of the suv had actually run a red light. They were attempting to exit and had just turned left on to laurel road when the driver of the suv apparently ran a red light and crashed right into them. Again, that is under investigation. It is not clear whether the driver was distracted or what was the cause of it. Fortunately, it appears that there were not many major injuries. It looks like it was all minor injuries. Thank you for that update. We appreciate it. Bart is recovering from multiple power issues that disrupted service in several areas. A power issue in the Berkeley Hills tunnel stop service for about one hour between rock ridge and orinda around 10 30 a. M. Free wings for bust ed some intense moments at a high school in san jose. Piedmont high schools forced to shelter in place as police looked for suspected that jumped fences and round of the School Campus. The shelter in place was activated as officers did search for the man. Robert honda has been tracking a story for us all day. Robert, what is the issue . Why does the school need to close . Reporter actually, it is really sort of a partial closure. What happened was about 12 years ago, this Elementary School did have to close because it was called goss elementary. Pretty much for the same reasons that schools are closed now. So to kind of rescue it they turned into a k there eight middle school. So the parents were upset because it was turned into a middle school, aptitude academy. Now the sixth, seventh and eighth graders will probably be moving on to another middle School Campus and back into that because they wont have easy access. This impacts so many families. What else are they telling you. . Reporter they are showing up at this meeting tonight and the school board to try to get them to change their minds. It has been an ongoing issue for a while. They want the district to look for more solutions. They feel as though, again, a partial closure was necessary. What is the superintendent saying . She actually has to make the regulation to the board. She is recommending the partial closure take place. It is for the same reasons a lot of people had to experience this here. This is due to declining enrollment and families moving out of the neighborhood. A lot of the schools here have to live on borrowed time because they were rescued by onetime state and federal funding given as emergency funds during the pandemic. And so she feels as though, as reluctant as she is to do it, it is a math problem and they dont have enough students to justify the cost as well as generating the funds. She says that they probably need about 700 students to make a middle school work and they have about 410 here and the projections show they are going up to 300 for the next few years. Thank you for that preview. Looking forward to that story later tonight. A plan to give st. James park and san jose a makeover is on hold for now. The state court of appeals ruled in favor of a Historic Foundation that represents the interest of the st. Clair club which is located right next to the park. According to the mercury news, the foundation said that the city failed to follow environmental assessments related to the project. They say so far, the city has not responded to the request for comment. And an important meeting is happening today. Officials with Alameda County are looking at a possible lease extension for the as coliseum. This after last months meeting about the lease that expired after this season. The as are looking for a short Term Contract while they build a new 1. 5 billion stadium in las vegas which likely would not be ready until 2028. So the team is considering aaa ballparks in Salt Lake City if they cannot come to an agreement on the coliseum. Bands say that the city and county should hold out for a longterm lease extension. If the as one an extension, there needs to be an expansion franchise guaranteed. Otherwise, it is kind of just leaving them in oakland and making it even more painful for the fans. And it is also helping john fisher in the long run. I hope the city really does hear with the fans are saying and what everyone in the city of oakland is saying and i hope they listen. We did reach out to the as for comment on the meeting but have yet to hear back. In a statement, the Mayors Office said the city was looking forward to a productive conversation. New technology is helping reduce pollutants that run off into the bay. What you are looking at right here is the wastewater facility in san lorenzo. They highlighted new technology that helps treat wastewater for reuse as well as the processes that help lower levels of nutrients that end up in water sources through runoff from our homes. We are talking about things like remnants of lawn fertilizers and even pharmaceutical drugs that end up in the wastewater. The next tour is happening march 21st at the Wastewater Treatment facility in palo alto. It is womens History Month and almost dinner time.
