Breaking news this morning out of San Francisco, this is where the chp is investigating a deadly hitandrun. It happened about 1 30 this morning when a car struck a pedestrian in lanes on westbound interstate 80 near the 5th street offramp. For some time all of the traffic was diverted. So far theres no vehicle description. If anyone may have witnessed what happened there, they are asked to contact chp. New this morning, an east Bay School District is under fire after a teachers alleged sexual behavior with a student. Now parents want to know how the teacher was hired in the first place. Today in the bays kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom. You got the superintendents response . Reporter the superintendent wants to know how this teacher was hired and whether there was anything the district missed. This is a teacher who is a fifth grade teacher and has been working at the same school for five years, hired after he was tried and acquitted of child molestation at a napa school. Matthew shelton is charged with five felony counts of lewd acts with a child sometime in 2022 when he was a teacher in benicia. The district says he was not a teacher at the school or in the district this school year. He is due to appear in court later today on those charges. But in addition to those five felony counts that he faces today, shelton was arrested and tried in 2008 for allegedly touching two students inappropriately, 8 and 9yearold girls. He was acquitted by a jury in 2008, and in just the last few hours, the benicia unified School District superintendent released a video statement. Here is part of it. We believe having an independent review of our systems will reinforce the comprehensiveness of our practices, and it may offer additional recommendations for consideration. We will not shy away from embracing actions that will strengthen our commitment to excellence across our operations and service to students. Reporter you heard the superintendent talk about an independent review. He says that the review is going to go over the hiring and supervision of teachers and staff. The districts process of how and how fast it handles complaints of impropriety and they will work with teachers and students to make sure they feel empowered to advocate for themselves. It is called busk it and it will connect local musicians and businesses along Market Street. During the launch, more than 25 musicians played on the sidewalk.
