This primary. Good evening. Im raj mathai. This is a big week in politics. Super tuesday is tomorrow. The state of the union is thursday. And tonight more pressure on a local district attorney. We start with the push to recall Alameda County d. A. Pamela price. One step closer now to going in front of voters. Those behind the recall say they have enough signatures to put it on the ballot. They call themselves safe, or save alameda for everyone. Today safe turned in more than 123,000 signatures. They only need about 73,000 valid signatures to qualify for a recall. Safe says the d. A. Has failed to hold criminals accountable. But the d. A. Refutes that and says the group is using crime victims for political gain. Our big question is, like, what are the solutions, right . Like what are the solutions . Number one, who would they put up in place . Who would be against d. A. Price . We have no name. What actual policy change would they put in place . Eve heard nothing. All weve seen is a weaponization of peoples real, real pain. We shouldnt have to do this. But for the safety of our community, the safety of our children, the safety of our businesses, this is something that had to be done. This is a right for the citizens of Alameda County. A recall is a right that they have. So what happens now . The county registrar of voters now has ten days to count and verify each signature. If the required 73,000 are validated, a special election for this recall will be set as early as april or may. Another headline that we are watching, a rolling gun battle in sonoma county. One person died, and four deputies were wounded. Tonight one of those deputies remains in Critical Condition. This is where it all ended on stony point road just outside of santa rosa early this morning. We spotted that one car, that white chevy towed away from the scene with several bullet holes in it. We also saw two patrol cars seriously damaged. Investigators say it began on nearby todd road where deputies were called out on a report of a man with a gun. They arrived and found a car that fit the 911 report, and they say the driver immediately started shooting and then took off. They chased him for about ten minutes until he crashed into a fence and started trading gunfire with the deputies. Neighbors say it was terrifying. I heard about 20plus gunshots in intervals, like six to seven at a time. So with a couple minutes or a minute in between or so, and it kind of extended. It went from one location and kept moving. That gunman died at the scene, but investigators are not yet saying how he died. Of the four deputies injured, were told one was shot in the leg. Two had hand injuries and a fourth with head injuries. That deputy is listed in Critical Condition at this hour. Also this evening, tahoe is digging out from this weekends blizzard. The storms dropping as much as 11 feet of snow in the highest elevations. Tonight the major highways have reopened to passenger cars, including interstate 80 and highway 50. Traffic is slow going. Heres one of the reasons. Only one lane is open in some of these snowier sections. Traffic has been bumper to bumper or at a dead stop throughout the day. Chain controls still in effect on both 80 and 50. Definitely surprised. I think we had been kind of tracking it. We had stopped in fulsome on the way up and looked at the traffic and saw straight red. If you live in it, youre used to it. But if youre not, i would just say dont come up here if you dont have to. We hit the ground running when the snowfall starts coming in, and we just stay on top of conditions for whatever Mother Nature brings us. And now that things have subsided, its all cleanup mode. Theres a couple of spots that are pretty narrow, only about a single lane of traffic can get through. So our crews are trying to get the plows out there and get them widened so that conditions can improve and traffic can start freely flowing back across the summit again. Caltrans is working right now. Some ski resorts are still closed. That includes sierra at tahoe, where crews spent the day literally just digging everything out. The plan for the ski resort is to reopen tomorrow. Joining us now is brian hickman, the Operations Manager at sierra at tahoe. Brian, you made it through the weekend. Thanks for being with us. Last time we saw you, you were in a snowcat. Where are you tonight . Were still here up at the resort. Were just outside the main lodge. The digouts begun. The snow has let up a little bit, so its better working conditions right now. Weve got crews up on the hill. We had a large team up here doing a lot of shoveling. We had all the road equipment working, all the snowcats working and an army of people digging out everything from the lifts to the lodges. Its going to be a slow process to get it open, but we are excited to have a very limited footprint tomorrow and as the week goes on, well continue to dig out more of the mountain and get it ready for all the skiers. You guys are rock stars up there. Have you ever seen so much snow from one set of storms . This was an impressive four days. You know, last year we had a ton of snow, but we got that over several months. To get this much snow in such a short period of time coupled with all of that wind blowing it around, this was an unprecedented storm. And just make sure all your colleagues there are safe, made it okay, their homes as well . Obviously you all live in that area. Yeah. We the crew that camped out over the last four days up there, we finally got off the hill today. Well go home, sleep in our own beds tonight, and be back hard at it tomorrow morning as we continue the digout. Bryan, whats the payoff here . Are you expecting some epic ski and boarding conditions later this week and into next weekend . Yeah. I think once we get the mountain dug out and the snow kind of pushed out where it needs to go, we get rid of all these big drifts, i think well have a great weekend coming up. But, again, it is going to take us a couple days to get the whole mountain dug out. Thanks for your time. I know you guys are busy. Good luck with everything. Well see you up on the slopes. Thanks a lot. Have a good night. This blizzard is great for our snowpack. It now is at 104 of normal levels. Thats especially impressive if you considerate the end of january, our snowpack as at 28 . Thats theby product of all this, jeff. It really is. We got some rainfall here in the bay area, anywhere from a half to about 1 1 2 inches on average. But this storm system hit the sierra harder because of the way this moved in. It pulled in all of that polar air from the north, and then as that polar air hit the mountains, those elevations at 5,000, 6,000, and 7,000 feet, the storm system, when it hits those mountains, it really helps to wring out some extra moisture. So thats why the sierra had so much more in the way of major impacts from this storm system than we did back here across the bay area. We did get in on some wind gusts here, certainly 60plus miles per hour. That was pretty frightening through the bay area. But the sierra again the big bullseye with this storm. Look at the snow totals. 10. 5 feet, sugar bowl. Central sierra snow lab, 6plus feet. Kirkwood, 5 feet. Heavenly also at 5. When it comes to snowfall through tonight and tomorrow, just 2 to about 5 inches so not too bad. Snowfree conditions expected on wednesday, thursday, and friday. Central sierra snowpack, that includes tahoe, 104 of normal. Of course we care about these numbers because that snow provides a third of the states water supply. Coming up well take a look at our rain chance for the bay area next two days. Im back with that in about ten minutes. Lets move on. We are on the eve of super tuesday when california and 14 other states will hold primaries. Tonight candidates are using these final hours to get voters to the polls. One of the top polling candidates in the california u. S. Senate race, democratic representative adam schiff. He was in the bay area today. He toured businesses in San Francisco and the castro, and then he took a walking tour of downtown san jose with mayor matt mahan. Oakland congresswoman barbara lee also campaigning today down in southern california. She stopped by her alma mater, san fernando high school, then to a nearby voting center. The other two leading candidates in this case, katie porter, asked leading republican, steve garvey, porter doing some interviews with nbc nightly news while steve garvey making his pitch on fox news. Voter turnout expected to be relatively low. So far, only 12 of voters have returned their ballots. However, tomorrow is election day. A lot of procrastinators out there. So we could see a big surge. Joining us now, Political Science professor Melinda Jackson from san jose state. Politics is all around us nowadays. Social media and hollywood. Even our local school boards. Why is voter turnout expected to be so low for this election . Well, usually were talking about the top of the ticket. Were talking about the president ial primaries this time of year. You know, thats just not competitive this time. We dont have a real contest on either side. So, you know, a lot of voters have not been paying as much attention as they usually do in a president ial election year. But with that said, you know, we do have a couple of significant races here in california. The senate race that you just mentioned for Dianne Feinsteins old seat as well as the district 16 for the u. S. House, anna eshoos seat. Shes stepping down, and so we have a hot contest there as well. Lets talk about that senate race. The top two advance to the november general election. Are you surprised that steve garvey is polling so well in such a blue state . Well, it is a little surprising, but that probably has something to do with, you know, the fact that he is the only republican, and so voters who are looking for an alternative to the democrats, you know, are going to go for him. And hes been getting a lot of exposure. You know, i think adam schiff would definitely like to have a contest against a republican candidate in november as opposed to a fellow democrat because that certainly would set him up for a better trajectory with the general election. But, you know, in primaries we also are seeing that low voter turnout. So you tend to get, you know, the most committed voters on the left and the right. So, you know, we could see a Garvey Schiff matchup in november. That would be interesting. You brought up that race to replace anna eshoo on the peninsula. Sam liccardo, joe simitian, evan low among the highprofile names in that race. Whos going to be the top two . Okay. You put me on the spot. You know, we have some really great candidates here. Again, this seat has not been open for over 30 years. So weve got folks like joe simitian and sam liccardo who have decades of experience in politics and great name recognition in this district. So, you know, those two, i would say, probably have the best again, the best kind of bases of voters who are already familiar with them. But, you know, we also have evan low in the race, who represents a younger generation. Also asian american, which is a significant portion of the electorate in that district. So, you know, i think it will be a real race, but ill go out on a limb and say two democrats. Relatively low turnout tomorrow. Does everyone kind of jump back on board for november knowing thats the real stuff that gets decided . We certainly hope for. One thing were going to be looking for is those Younger Voters. Generation z is coming into politics now. Theyre of voting age, and, you know, they are tending to really, you know, value issues like Climate Change and income inequality. You know, theyre looking at a range of issues that if they do start flexing that power and making their voices heard, they can really start to have more of an impact in our elections. I dont think were going to see huge turnout from the Younger Voters in this primary election. But, again, if they come back in november, that could make a real difference. That would be great for everyone involved. Thank you for your time and your insight. We will see you as this progresses in these next several months. Appreciate it. Youre welcome. We got you covered for tomorrow. You can scan that qr code on the left side of your screen. It will take you right to our primary elections guide, or head to nbcbayarea. Tonight Berkeley Unified School district is facing a civil rights complaint alleging that it ignored severe and persistent harassment of jewish students. This also includes teachers. Heres nbcs marianne favro. Reporter since the hamas attacks on israel in october, dozens of jewish students at berkeley unified have complained of antisemitism in the classroom. Elana perlman says she pulled her ninth grade son out of his Berkeley High art class because of his teachers actions. Certain things that children were saying that were really bad for jews, like killing the jews and things like this.
