The rain is gone for now . The rain is gone for a little while and were heading for cooler temperatures. As we get a look at our visibility, thats the main issue, especially for the north bay, where we are seeing dense fog developing, especially around novato where visibility is down to about a quarter of a mile. So make sure youre allowing extra time to get to work this morning. As we take a look at santa rosa, it is 50 degrees and foggy there, as we are seeing, once again, the low visibility, starting out with cool temperatures. Were in the low 50s now, but its going to clear up and shape up to be a really nice day. A little warmer in some spots compared to yesterday afternoon. This, for allegedly trying to turn off the engines of a San Franciscobound plane midflight. Today in the bays kris sanchez is joining us from the newsroom with more on what we know about this and why this all happened. Reporter we were told that the suspect had some sort of mental breakdown, but what hes accused of doing is something that should only happen in a total emergency. This all happened on a horizon air flight to San Francisco from everett, washington. This is the man on your screen, 44yearold Joseph Emerson of pleasant hill. He is a pilot, he was off duty. He was sitting in the extra seat in the cockpit. Now, outside the cockpit passengers said that the plane started going down fast all of a sudden, making several sharp turns, and then they heard an announcement over the speakers about an Emergency Landing. Inside the cockpit, were told that emerson tried to turn off the planes engine using what our nbc news aviation analyst says is used only in a fire or other emergency. They have what they call fire handles thandles on the roof of the cockpit, that you grab, you turn, and you shut down, and that shuts the fuel off, as well as turning the engine off, so its used for an emergency situation, if you have an engine fire or something along those lines. Its a very quick way of shutting down the engines. This jump seat rider may have tried to use those emergency thandles to do it. Reporter emerson was subdued by horizon air crew members and escorted to the back of the plane. Upon landing, emerson was taken into custody. The faa is investigating, but the fbi says what happened does not appear to be tied to any current world events. It is worth noting, pilots over the age of 40 have to undergo medical evaluations every six months, and they have to disclose any Mental Health issues that theyre having or any medications that theyre taking. However, full mental evaluations are not part of that physical. Emersons last physical was just last month. Interesting. Thanks, kris.
