Good morning, and thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia. Im Marcus Washington. We are following the violence in israel and gaza that shows no sign of letting up. This is a live look at gaza where it is 9 00 p. M. New numbers coming out of israel and gaza showing the death toll has reached close to 2,400 people. As of now, 22 americans included in that number. The attacks from hamas militants started five days ago. Since then, israel forces, well, they have launched their own retaliation, sending fighter jets and cutting the gaza strip off from supplies. Before delivering a speech, President Biden spoke about israel saying he had just hung up the phone with israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu and continued to pledge support for israel. Theres no justification for terrorism, no excuse, and the type of terrorism here is beyond the pale, beyond the pale. As i said yesterday, my commitment to israels security and the safety of jewish people is unspeakable. The United States has israels back, and were going to be working on this all through the day and beyond. This morning, the ministry reported its main power plant has run out of fuel. Israel is now relying on generators. Richard engel is on the ground. Reporter the situation down here in southern israel has just changed. The last several days, what weve been seeing is israeli air strikes into the gaza strip, israeli planes attacking hamas targets, the homes of hamas leaders, hamas infrastructure. But now a military buildup is under way and it seems that a Ground Invasion could be imminent. The Israeli Defense minister has already said that a Ground Invasion will take place, that it will be a new phase of this war, and that the goal is to destroy hamas. I spoke to a senior Israeli Military official, and he said that there will be casualties, but that israel had no choice to go in, even though hamas is holding hostages. The fact that hamas is holding maybe 150 hostages makes this operation all the more difficult. As soon as these tanks and Armored Vehicles enter into the gaza strip, those to hostages and all the people of gaza and of course the Israeli Soldiers will be at great risk. Hamas say they welcome this invasion, that it has been preparing for this invasion for a long time, the same way it feels prepared for the massacre that killed now, according to the latest figures, more than 1,200 israelis. A new phase is about to begin, and there will be many casualties. Today we got a grim update on the hostage crisis in gaza. Israels minister of Foreign Affairs held a news briefing but didnt give a timing on rescue operations. There are maybe between 100 to 150 hostages in gaza, including foreign visitors. We heard from noem terry, who says her father was taken near the border. We havent heard anything from my father or the other kidnapped members of the kibbutz since saturday. We know nothing about their condition or even if theyre alive. Its been five long, ruthless days and nights for our families. Perry put out a plea to the International Aid groups working in gaza to try to help victims get in contact with their families. Asked pointblank, a Ministry Spokesperson says the focus are military operations, not yet for hostage negotiations. New at 11 00, a bay area businessman is among those stranded in israel waiting to get back home. Nbc bay areas Ginger Conejero saab is live in San Francisco. Thats where the businessman you spoke with is hoping to be back in several days. Ginger. Reporter thats right. San francisco is home for this Business Owner manny. But his flight is among those that have been canceled because of the state departments travel advisories for region. Now, his visit was originally supposed to be a celebratory one. It has taken a turn since the war broke out. Hes spent his time volunteering for victims and now today to the front lines of war. This is manny with his cousin. They live thousands of miles apart but have some notable similarities. Were both 34. Were both gay. Were both afghans. We both own coffee shops. He is slightly more attractive than i am. Reporter a bit of humor in the face of reality. Hes getting ready to be deployed and im getting ready to go back to the United States. Reporter stab one of the thousands of israelis being called to serve in what has become the deadliest conflict for israelis and palestinians in nearly a decade. On one hand, it feels a little bit like abandoning my family to go back to the United States. On the other hand, i have a life back in the United States that i have employees, a coffee shop, a business of my own, so i feel kind of torn. But ultimately, it sounds like things are going to get worse before they get better, so probably its a good idea to figure out a way to get home. Reporter today they spent a day as if it were like any other. Trying to take his mind off everything going on, that he has a bag packed at home, his military uniform awaiting his coordinates. What i can bring to him is just a little bit of love and comfort. Reporter carving out time to create memories much different than what lies ahead. I want people to think if this was their family or mother or daughter that was murdered in their home. What would you do . How would you try to defend them so it would never happen again . Reporter as far as those flights are concerned, several American Airlines carriers have suspended their service for now. Mannys flight is among those, but he did tell us he does feel confident hell be able to get out of israel when he needs to, to get on a flight. Laura . I hope he can get out safely. Ginger, thanks. Israeli press conferences are done before tv camera announcements, but hamas, theyre recorded and distributed on the internet. Thats not the only thing theyre uploading. A warning for parents this morning from our tech reporter scott mcgrew. So, parents should check their social network like snapchat and the like, but they may not be fully aware of telegram. Newsrooms use it daily. Telegram is where Volodymyr Zelenskyy posts updates from the ukrainian front, where experts post from afghanistan, where human rights afld cats tell us whats happening to women in iran. None of this is ever censored or deleted, but it is where hamas also gets its messages out. When you see videos from hamas on Network Television like youre seeing now, these started on telegram. Hamas uploaded them. Well, hamas, as you well know, has hostages, and if or when it starts hurting those hostages, they will make those videos as gruesome and disturbing as possible. They want people to see them. These videos obviously may appear on any app, but youtube and instagram and facebook and snapchat all do a pretty good job of finding them and deleting them. Telegram doesnt work that way. Its simply not set up that way. Back to you. Good to know. Ott. Cerage of the war continues in all of our newscasts. The latest updates are online at nbcbayarea. Com. Download our free nbc bay area app. A Traffic Alert in concord. Busy roads and a highway shutdown for Police Activity. Police are gathered at willow pass road at the highway 242 overpass. Its been going on since about 7 15 this morning. It sounds like it is about to wrap up. Lets check in with mike inouye, whos been monitoring it. Its still very slow. Until they reopen northbound 242, the situation will remain. Northbound 680 jammed up with folks coming off the walnut creek interchange up toward the area. The good news is right now, its closed off 280. Its good news because you cant get stuck in the backup. You want to get off before you get to the slowdown. Youll go through city streets and lots of congestion. You can take it farther north, contra costa boulevard, that takes you north to concord avenue. Thats probably your best bet through the area. Its on the other side of the freeway. It takes you a few extra miles, but be patient there, a slower drive through the city streets, again, jumping back on the 242 north of there. Remember that this is not a good avenue here. All that congestion. The northbound side is separated from the southbound side. Thats why the southbound traffic is able to get past the scenes, northbound isolated where that Police Activity is, again, just by willow pass road. You cant ak celtics the freeway. Concord is the way to access. Good information for commuters, mike. Thank you. Today, more than 6,000 San Francisco educators will vote on whether to allow their union to take their contract negotiations with the district to the picket line. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us now with where things go from here. Kris . Reporter hi, marcus. This is not a vote to walk off the job and out of the classroom. Its a strike authorization vote. It means it is the union telling leadership they are willing to go on strike to get what they want, so this is basically giving their union more teeth in that fight for their contract. Now, more than 2,000 teachers showed up on a school night to show support at the last negotiating session just a few weeks ago. United educators of San Francisco is what the union is called, and they want to up the pressure because, as of that last session, they are still with San Francisco unified. The two sides still cannot agree on teachers, counselors, aides and staff working conditions. They also have an issue with what it calls the district financial management, which they say included the use of a payroll system that left a lot of teachers with no paychecks on payday. Another big Sticking Point is that pay on that paycheck. The union wants a 12,000 raise for every single teacher in year one and another smaller raise in year two. But the district is only offering a oneyear raise that is less than half of what the teachers are asking for. Todays vote is to show what the teachers are willing to do to get what they want. This vote does not indicate the dates upon which we will strike. It does not indicate that we will walk out tomorrow. Instead, its a show of how many folks are really behind the conditions and the proposals that weve put forward and solutions. The city does have a vested interest in a possible strike, and the mayor has offered help to mediate if it comes to that. Well be asking the mayor about that later today. Also, the districts 900 custodial staff also authorized their union, sieu, to call a strike if need be, so the teachers have solidarity on that part as well. The united educators of San Franciscos strike authorization vote is happening today after school so as not to disrupt instruction. Its from 4 00 to 8 00 this evening. It will take that long because the more than 6,000 teachers that are a member of this union will be voting at the same place, balboa high school. I reached out to San Francisco unified to offer an opportunity to weigh in on the strike authorization vote later today. I have not heard back. When we get that, well make sure we post it online and on our socials so you can keep track. Kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. Hopefully an agreement between the two happens sooner than later. The kids are the ones affected. Reporter its nerveracking, yeah. Parents and students. Thanks, kris. Lunchtime for a lot of student ace cross the bay area. The sun is out. A little hazy out there. I dont think it will be too much of a concern for wildfires since weve had some moisture, but something to look out for. The winds out of the northwest at around 15 to 35 miles an hour, definitely gustier by the coast. By tomorrow, we should see that High Pressure settling in, giving us slightly warmer temperatures into the low 80s in some spots. Looking ahead, more chance ls of rain coming into the bay area and clouds. Thats coming up in a few minutes. The house of representatives could have a new speaker by the end of the day. Gun owners must now store their weapons in locked containers or tlooesm disabled with a trigger lock. If we get invited. Otherwise, well take a break. A lot of sunshine but also bringing another layer because its windy for the day. Lets get a check of the microclimate forecast for the rest of this evening. Well see a mix here of two pressure systems kind of in the way of each other. That tends to bring up the wind speeds a little bit. As this frontal system from yesterday and monday that started off our week makes its exit, right behind it is going to be more of that dry, warmer temperatures on the way. Today its going to feel a little bit seasonal. Fall vibe continuing. Well see upper 60s in San Francisco, low 70s as we make our way around the east bay shoreline, and only the mid to upper 70s for martinez and through the santa clara valley, 73 degrees. For tomorrow, heres where that High Pressure starts to settle a little bit. We start to see those 80s return but only a few of them out in concord. Fairfield at 82. The rest of us looking at a niles day filled with more snipe and those winds that will die down. But that sunshine and the beautiful weather will be a little bit short lived looking to our longrange forecast. More rain chances on the way for the start of our weekend. Most of it will still stay concentrated to parts of northern california, where most of that bullseye has been in the past couple weeks right there with the border with oregon. Friday night it pushes on through. By saturday morning, maybe some of us get a little bit of that drizzle, but it will be focused in marin county and up. I see another chance here coming in more monday. This one might be a little broader reaching more parts of the bay area, but well finetune those details as we get closer. San francisco over the next couple days, be mindful of the wind heading towards the city, around 15 to 35 miles an hour. It should die down later on this evening, bringing us more sunshine for our thursday plans, but more cloud cover coming in through the city and for our inl
