Hundreds gathered at San Francisco city hall today to pay their final respects to the late senator Dianne Feinstein. Senator Dianne Feinstein passed away last week at her home in washington d. C. And 90 years old. She died of Natural Causes with her daughter at her side. She started her career in the late 60s as a member of the board of supervisors and was elected San Francisco mayor. Severance security was extremely tight. She led the city through some of the darkest times including the assassination of the former mayor and harvey mills. She went on to be a senator for 30 years. Mayor london breed opened the sarah miss service and she remembered which was a little girl in the 70s and she said Dianne Feinstein was such an admission to her and helped guide her when she became a member of the county board of supervisors. As far as i ever knew Dianne Feinstein was the mayor. For kids my age she accepted that a woman could be in charge and a woman could do whatever man could do. We believed that he considered it normal. It was her word that meant the most when i became the second woman to be mayor of the city in the wake of tragedy. It was her advice on how to heal and lead they give me strength. Reporter doug emhoff came in from washington d. C. And landed at San Francisco again darkly to the service. The Vice President spoke fondly of her colleague and called her a friend. And she thanks Dianne Feinstein about with family for their sacrifice as their major was in Public Office for over 50 years. They also spoke about her personal side. She was also a student of history. A gifted, and i will add, very generous artist. Many of us are collectors of dianes work. She loved flowers. She would grow them and show them and she would paint them and share them on drawings and on mugs. Does anybody here have a dianne mug . Reporter Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer worked closely with Dianne Feinstein. He recalled one of her most important pieces of legislation, the assault weapons ban in 1994 he said he has never seen anyone work so hard to get a bill passed. She worked every angle and spoke with nra and even got republicans to vote for the bill. Now, there are many additives that rightly said Dianne Feinstein. Strong, unflappable, winning, fierce, practical, ernest, but one quality above all stands out in my mind. It will forever set diane apart. Integrity. Integrity. Reporter integrity for sure. You learned a lot of things behind the scenes of what it took to get the Beautiful Service on today. It was quite the production and something changing throughout the day. It was interesting that a lot of recollections of 70 people were very touching. Big stories of all that she has had and fights that she thought through her entire career. There were very special moments and people touching stories. One of those with an interesting perspective was her granddaughter, irene mariano who works at city hall. She had very interesting stories about her grandmother. She says she had an instant connection with her. She also says her grandmother would often give her very interesting advice. Sometimes very interesting advice, especially for those that want to go into public service. Some of her stories got laughs from some of the audience. It does not matter if youre going to a city or the desert or beach or the mountains. Always pack a black pantsuit. [ laughter ] there is no occasion to which you cannot wear a black pantsuit. [ laughter ] she says she remembers all of this advice from her grandmother. Also, touching things like playing hide and seek with her grandmother. She said she would often play games with her grandmother as well. She says her grandmother never liked losing when she would get good enough to beat her grandmother at some of those games. She said often times, senator Dianne Feinstein, her grandmother, would sing to her. She would sing, you are my sunshine, my only sunshine. Losing her comments she had tears in peoples eyes as she said farewell to her grandmother with a remembrance of those moments. Your family loves you. We are so proud of you. We miss you and you will always, always be my sunshine. She does work at city hall. I was talking with stepbrothers at city hall about the lead up to today. She says eileen was one of the people in so many of the change in plans that she would. In with her fellow staffers at city hall and would say, are you doing okay . Do you need help with anything . It is interesting, as you hear the blue angels flying over and over, everyone at the ceremony was interrupted. The nature to remember and remind everyone that Dianne Feinstein is the reason why fleet week is in San Francisco she was mayor in 1981 when it was established apparently, she was a very big fan of the blue angels. Nancy pelosi thing that she flew in the blue angels as well. Quite a touching memorial to senator Dianne Feinstein. Every time they flew by, the rabbi would say that is an american amen. They flew by frequently. They are reversing for fleet week this weekend. Mayor Dianne Feinstein at the time, brought them to San Francisco. You followed the career of senator Dianne Feinstein. She had a fire code in our car and went jump out of a fire seat. I heard a story from a biographer that she gave a man in the tenderloin district who had overdosed mouthtomouth resuscitation. She was all about the details. One of the things you hear from people that worked with her at city hall or who worked with her in the senate, she was someone who would remember details. There was a woman signing the condolence book earlier in the week and she said, someone stole her wallet. At the time, mayor Dianne Feinstein heard about it and found her in city hall and said, are you okay . Those are the details so many stories and so many details. She loved the city of San Francisco. Is there a way to explain the huge outpouring of support . There is no wall one sentence. As a mayor in the city she found ways to help those who needed help other places, but could not get it. I think of things like aids. She was among the first mayors to dig up funds from the treasury for aids. Gay marriage. She was the first mayor to propose gay marriage. Gun control, she got the board of supervisors to pass a bill banning guns for most people. The court overturned it, but she was not afraid to take it on. Three big issues that so many different places would not touch and she did. She encompassed so many things larry one topic that a lot of people discussed today is the fact that she paved the way for so many women. She got elected to the senate in 1992, the year of the woman. You may remember it or read about it. Along with barbara boxer. The First Time Ever two women represented the senate from any state. 24 women got elected to the house that year. It was unimaginable. Four women got elected to the senate, she and boxer were two of them. She paved the way by example. Her staff, those looked up to her. Where she gave talks did anything like that, she would be the first to say you can do it. I did it. You can do it. You know what . Com new development on a story out of the east bay. Police have arrested a suspect in a deadly stabbing at a union city Retirement Community. It happened before 8 00 this morning at the tropics mobile home park, not far from 880 and Alvarado Niles boulevard. When officers got back, they found three victims. One was dead and two others were taken to the hospital with nonlifethreatening injuries. One person hurt was a bicyclist who police say was hit by a black audi.
