Here we go, team. Its wednesday morning. Halfway through our workweek already. Thanks for joining us. Im laura garcia. Im marcus washington. Of course weve god you covered on all fronts this morning. Mike is looking at that commute. First, lets talk about the forecast, kari. It looks great out there today. And such a different picture from a lot of the cameras we had yesterday morning at this time. It is now all dry as you head out in dublin, and were going to see some dry conditions throughout the day. Take a look at our planner. Going from upper 50s at 9 00 this morning to 1 00 at 75 degrees, a really mild day ahead. Hopefully youll be able to spend more time outside and enjoy the nice temperatures that were enjoying for this first full week of fall. In hayward, well see a high of 77 degrees, 80 in napa and novato, and low 80s for santa rosa. Going into the day tomorrow, it will be slightly warmer for those interior valleys. Well talk about that and when we may see rain again coming up in a few minutes. Mike, do you still have the Traffic Alert . We do, reports that highway 37 is blocked, thats what the Speed Sensors are marked on the map. The backup is not solid coming toward 121. There must be some traffic getting by. Westbound 37 jammed up and the build out of vallejo, i would not go this way if youre heading toward novato. The long route means much more time heading up toward highway 12 or down across the Richmond Bridge. The crew has been on scene with this crash for quite some time. The rest of the bay shows standard build, the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza and recovery after an earlier crash after the Castro Valley y. Thank you very much. 6 02 right now. New overnight, Oakland Police have investigating an apparent deadly hitandrun. Officers scoured the scene on international boulevard near 54th avenue, closing traffic through the night in both directions. Off camera, they told our photographer at the scene the victim died. Police so far are not confirming that. Officers also told us the driver ran from the scene and the suspected car was left there. Again, were still awaiting confirmation. A quiet east bay neighborhood suddenly turned upside down after an apparent explosion, and this morning firefighters are still asking a lot of questions. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us from our newsroom. The whole thing rattled neighbors. It was a nerveracking night for the neighbors, the firefighters, because they had a hard time getting into the home, which the battalion chief told us had all the telltale signs of being a marijuana grow house. In the video, you see firefighters trying to make access through the roof, down below you see the windows covered with plywood. That was making it difficult for firefighters to get in. When they finally were able to get in, it was just too dangerous and they had to pull back out. It was just in the nick of time. Moments later, the roof caved in. The fire was just reported before 10 00 last night in antioch on the 5300 block of navajo way. Because of access issues and the initial report of an explosion, firefighters were at the scene for more than four hours. Neighbors told us they have witnessed other similar fires in the neighborhood recently, which made them fear for their own safety. I felt scared and i thought that everyone in the house was going to lose their life and our dogs were going to be harmed. Reporter her roommate grabbed a hose and tried to help before firefighters got there. Once they were on scene, the firefighters were on scene for four hours, they did spend most of the time outside dousing the flames from the outside, taking that defensive position, because it was just too unsafe for the firefighters to go inside once they came out. The investigation into the suspected grow house continues. Kris, thank you. Happening today, a south bay man accused in a decadesold Sexual Assault is due in court for a plea hearing. In june sunnyvale authorities arrested Jeffrey Richard martinez after what they say was a positive dna hit. They credited a public genealogy database for finding that match. Since that time, they say at least two more victims have come forward. The case revolves around a 1996 Sexual Assault of a 7yearold girl. It is still possible that more charges will be filed. President biden waking up this morning in the bay area to conclude a twoday visit. We have a live look at San Franciscos Fairmont Hotel. That is where the president is staying and where he plans to attend a meeting later today involving white house science and technology advisers. Yesterday the president attended fundraising events in San Francisco and atherton. Our Ginger Conejero saab will join us with a more detailed report coming up in our next half hour. Also, when were not on the air, you can always stay up with the president s visit online. Head to our website, nbcbayarea. Com, or download our free news app. Developing this morning, questions growing about San Franciscos fleet week being severely dialed back in the event of a government shutdown. The deal is needed by saturday and fleet week ramps up next thursday when the blue angels are supposed to practice. For now, organizers are still planning for an all systems go. As for the funding deadline, lawmakers in the house and senate still appear to be on two different paths. Here is a live look at the capitol this morning. Hard right House Republicans want significant spending cuts and provisions, including more funding for the southern border. The senate, meanwhile, just passed a bipartisan stopgap measure that may hit a brick wall in the house. Now, today in the bays drew petrimoulx is in washington for us, and, drew, neither path seems likely to overcome that shutdown at this point, anyway, right . Reporter yeah, thats exactly right. Good morning, marcus. Right now the senate controlled by democrats and the house, which is under republican control, appear to be on different paths. And neither seems likely to lead to a solution that avoids that government shutdown. With the house making little progress, the senate is moving forward with its own shortterm funding plan to keep the government running through midnovember. This bipartisan cr is a temporary solution, a bridge towards cooperation and a way from extremism. And it will allow us to keep working to fully fund the federal government and spare American Families the pain of a shutdown. Reporter the plan maintains current levels of government spending, plus additional funding for ukraine and disaster relief, but faces dim prospects in the republicancontrolled house. In the house well take up ours. I did talk to leader mcconnell tonight. Reporter Speaker Mccarthy said the house will put forward its funding plan before the end of the week that focuses on border security. Its unclear if mccarthy has the votes to pass it, facing a rebellion from hard line members of his party pressing for deeper spending cuts. This place is broken and we need to stop spending the way we are. We need to get spending under control and it should be the top priority. Reporter with the shutdown looming, federal agencies getting contingency plans in place ahead of the september 30th deadline. This is so unnecessary. This doesnt need to happen. Reporter a shutdown would impact a broad array of federal programs, from prek to agriculture, 4 million federal workers will be affected, with some being furloughed and others being forced to work without pay. Now, late tuesday the house did take the first steps toward passing some longterm spending bills, but they would likely face stiff opposition in the senate and do little to avoid the shutdown. In washington, im drew petrimoulx. Back to you. Hopefully a compromise for the people will come out very soon. Thank you. 6 08 right now. And new at 6 00, a new boost for Public Transit in the north bay. S. M. A. R. T. Rail is receiving 32 million to help fund a new extension to cloverdale. The money comes courtesy of a grant from the federal Railroad Administration and s. M. A. R. T. Says most of the money will be spent on the stretch between windsor and heelsberg. Taking a live look in San Francisco this morning, not too bad to start our wednesday. Meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect. A lot clearer today than yesterday. Absolutely. You dont need the umbrella, the rain jacket or all of that stuff we had to deal with yesterday in the city. Its clear in san jose, so were starting out with a nice, clear morning, cool temperatures, a jacket, definitely. Its 54 degrees. Then as we go throughout the morning, youll be taking that jacket off as it becomes a lot more comfortable and our temperatures reach into the mid70s early in the afternoon. Well see a high of 77 today in san jose, fremont, hayward, oakland, mountain view, and low 80s for napa, with livermore also reaching 80 degrees. We do have cooler temperatures in our weekend forecast and also some of us may see rain. So ill have more on that in a few minutes. Mike has a look at where you can find lower gas prices for now. Prices did jump up at places that i pass overnight. Well watch in the south bay. Costco on Lawrence Station road is at 4. 97. Thats the best we could do below 5 bucks. Contra costa county, the middle number, 5. 19 at concord super stop on willow pass road. The rest for marin gas on magnolia avenue, 5. 19. On the roadways we have to point out a couple of key spots. The most important one i see as far as the reports go, reports of all lanes of westbound 37 blocked at 121. Traffic must be getting by somehow. I also see another report talking about a signal taken out. So perhaps theres a signal out instead of the roadway. Plan for delays. Muir island toward novato, highway 37 seeing that. The berkeley curve is holding steady, lighter than yesterday. No problems on the bay bridge span. Well track a shift. Back to you. Thanks, mike. You know what . You may want to start rethinking any upcoming trips to vegas because major hotels may soon be facing a strike. Coming up, were going to talk about the new step taken by tens of thousands of workers. The ftc puts an amazon lawsuit in its cart, plus a record set in space. Lets take you out to the futures. Hoping for Something Green after yesterdays drubbing. Looks pretty good. Frightening moments for a mother and son going viral this morning. How she got him to safety after a bear decided to join their picnic. You dont want to miss this video. Video. Lets head over to novato with our start of the morning at 50 degrees and all clear. And its going to be a cool start, but shaping up to be a very comfortable day, as that sunshine continues in the forecast. It will be slightly warmer. Well talk about this and a chance of rain in our weekend forecast coming up. Were looking at the bridge out of richmond, westbound 580. The bridge might be seeing more traffic because some folks are avoiding highway 37. I think you are able to get past the crash and the alert. We have another issue, though, for 580 coming through oakland. Ill sort out some details and get that to you coming up. Good morning. Very happy wednesday to you. Another down day on the markets. Big numbers. The dow was down more than 380 points, which 20 years ago would have totally freaked us out. These days with the dow over 30,000, it works out to a little more than 1 . We mentioned that target is closing nine stores because of theft and violence, understandably, including three stores in the bay area. On tuesday, the ftc did what we assumed it would do, and accused amazon in a massive antitrust lawsuit. The federal Government Joins 19 states in accusing amazon of punishing sellers if they try to sell for less somewhere else, and that it all but forces sellers to use amazon warehouses and Delivery Systems in order to get a prime designation. Just because amazon is great and in many ways wonderful and convenient, doesnt mean amazon can break the law. The lawsuit was brought by the new head of the federal trade commission, lena khan, and we suspected this was coming because she wrote a better calling it the amazon paradox. Its not clear what the government wants to do about ambassadors, how it would solve the problems its describing. This is the second major antitrust lawsuit against big tech. The other is in court right now, the trial against google, accused of anticompetitive behavior by the justice department. Speaking of google, this year has been the 25th anniversary of googles creation. Later this morning on the today show, harry smith is going to take a look at googles new artificial intelligence, bart. What did you ask bart . I said summarize all the emails from my kids school. You understand the start of school year is very stressful. Inundation of emails, buy this, prepare that. Bart as able to summarize. That saved me hours of time, did it in minutes. Thats ahead on the today show. Also, brand new video about an hour and 45 minutes ago, you can barely make out the parachute, frank rubio and other astronauts returned to earth. Rubio had been on the International Space station for about a year and a half. That is the longest stay in space in all of human history. He wasnt supposed to stay that long. One of the capsules, they were not sure about it returning safely so they delayed it. Its going to be extraordinary to hear what hes gone through coming back to earth. He will not be able to walk for quite some time. You dont think about that, they dont use muscles. Exactly right. It will tell us a lot about if we really do want to go to mars. Right, the way theyll inspect his body and everything. His muscles atrophy, amazing. Developing in las vegas, growing threats of a strike by tens of thousands of hospitality workers. Yesterday Union Leaders announced workers voted to authorize a strike. So far, no date has been set. If a strike does happen, just about every major Destination Hotel and casino would be affected, including chains like mgm resorts, cesars and wynn. Trending this morning, heartstopping video of a mother in mexico certainly playing mama bear when an actual bear cub comes face to face with she and her son. This is a video from a park in monterey on monday where they were celebrating his birthday. He has down syndrome and his mom says that animals scare him. You can see bravely, that mother shielding her childs face as the bear chows down on the familys lunch. That video was shot by a friend of the family who was also there in celebration. Eventually the bear left after she ate all the food there, and later said that not a hero, the mother there, just a mother protecting her own cub. Oh, my. Thats a little close for comfort. We were looking at that video online. You cant just get up and run. You just sit there. And you just think how your heart must have been racing with that bear so close. Autism spectrum or not, the bear, anybody. Oh, yeah. That clearly was more of a cub bear. Mama bear wasnt too far back. Great job by the videographer. After you finish looking at the video, wait, somebody is recording this. Throw a sandwich over there or something. Everything is recorded nowadays. Goodness. You might want to press record and play on this forecast. Absolutely. Get ready to take some beautiful pictures of the sunrise this morning. Were starting out with a clear morning and were seeing that as well in dublin. Yesterday it was a couple of spotty sprinkles falling here and there. Now it is all dry. Lets head over to Castro Valley, where we are starting out at 56 degrees. Clear there as well. As youre heading out the door, temperatures in the upper 50s at 7 00 and its going to be a beautiful day. Hopefully youll be able to take it in and get some time outside and enjoy the mild weather were seeing. In East San Jose well see a high of 82 and 80 in cupertino, and the wind will start to pick up, especially later on this afternoon, as our temperatures head for the low 80s in concord, reaching 84 in antioch and 77 for oakland, hayward and in fremont. Well be in the upper 70s for palo alto, San Francisco reaching the upper 60s in the marina district, and were headed for 82 degrees with upper 70s for ukiah. Another storm system moving into the pacific northwest. This is so early to see all of these active storms and some really beneficial rainfall moving just to the north of the bay area into northern california. Another round of rain hitting crescent city, eureka and over toward mount shasta. This will fall apart before it gets to the bay area, so were still not expecting any rain today. But there could be some in our weekend forecast. So take a look at friday. Here we are at 5 30 and we see a round of some scattered light showers coming in. Its going to be off and on between friday night and early saturday morning, and in the north bay we could see some decent amounts of rainfall for saturday afternoon. So just plan ahead that there may be some rain moving in, we may have to change some of those outdoors plans. We could see the potential of these areas in green getting threequarters to an inch of rain, and then most of us getting about a quarter inch of rain or less. So thats what were expecting going into the weekend, with those scattered showers off and on. Look at how much cooler its going to be. Were going from low 80s today and tomorrow to low 70s on saturday, and sunday is the better of the two days this weekend to make plans to get outside. Mike, youve been watching a couple of flashing lights and
