right," has died. we look back at his legendary career. >> thank you very, very much for inviting me into your homes. >> announcer: this is "nbc nightly news" with jbd jbld. good evening. we begin tonight with breaking news. another mass shooting tearing through a community just going through everyday life. today, it happened at a dollar general store in jacksonville, florida. the shooter has been killed, and while we still know very little about the motive, we do know the shooting took place in a predominantly black community. in the aftermath of the shooting, that community already coming together. this is the prayer circle that residents created, mourning those they have lost. marissa parra has details. >> reporter: multiple fatalities from a shooting. >> our own neighborhood. >> reporter: the mayor racing to the scene. >> it's just so awful that they have got to deal with this type of thing time and time again. and we've got to find some -- some better way of dealing with this violence. it's just heartbreaking. >> reporter: police and s.w.a.t. teams seen running down surrounding streets. students asked to stay in place at nearby edward waters university as a precaution, as yet another community is left looking for strength in each other, with little answers to a tragedy seen all too often. >> i'm emotional. it's unjust that we can't -- we can't even walk on the sidewalks. we're not safe in any stores. >> marissa is with us now. we just got an update on the death toll? >> reporter: yes, so, the press conference just began within the last few minutes, jose, and what they said is that three people are dead, that is not including the shooter, but of course, still so many questions, including, what prompted all of this? hopefully some answers will be coming swiftly tonight with the press conference that is unfolding as we speak at this moment. jose? >> marissa parra, thank you. and that's not the only shooting we have to report on tonight, with violence breaking out at two sporting events. gunfire erupting at a major league baseball game and at a high school football game. in all, five people were shot, one fatally. george solis has details. >> what is going on? >> reporter: this was the terrifying moment shots were fired at a high school football game until oklahoma last night. >> we've got people shooting. >> reporter: you can see the players and students running for their lives. >> people are down on the field. that's crazy. >> reporter: three people were shot, including a young woman, a a man in his 40s. and now, police say a 16-year-old boy has died. >> oh there's gunshots. >> reporter: officials say it all started with an argument between at least two males. >> i hate that it happened. we both have great students. we always have security at our games. >> reporter: mark rogers was calling the game. how jarring was it to see that visual, people just dropping? >> well, that was the most jarring thing, to me. and that's the point where i'm trying to take cover in the press box. there was a lot of pandemonium at that point. >> reporter: no word yet on suspects. >> driven to deep right. >> reporter: meanwhile, in chicago -- >> there's blood in the stands. >> reporter: two women were shot at last night's white sox game. both expected to survive. this highlighted video shows fans in the stands appearing to be waving for help. still on the minds of fans going through metal detectors as they prepare for this match-up against the oakland a's. >> i hope it will lead to some better security and better times going forward. >> george solis is on the field for tonight's white sox home game. are police any closer to figuring out who opened fire? >> reporter: yeah, no suspect description has been released by police. they aren't even saying where the shots were fired. fans are starting to pack in these seats. it is a beautiful summer night, they just want to get in and see some baseball. jose? >> george, thank you. tonight, rare wildfires are burning in the south, and forcing mass evacuations in the state of louisiana. the fires fueled by the relentless heat and ongoing drought, and now, a new weather threat is heading for the region. pri sis la thompson reports from louisiana. >> reporter: tonight, a wildfire emergency in louisiana. several raging throughout the state. this one scorching more than 30,000 acres in southwest louisiana. residents forced to evacuate. as fire fighters race to contain these terrifying flames. >> nobody alive in louisiana has ever seen these conditions. it's never been this hot, this dry, for this long. >> reporter: in derider, louisiana, this church now a shelter. william and liota lacy grabbed their grandkids and rushed out. have you seen anything like this here? >> no. >> no. never. >> reporter: jada watkins and her grandma were unable to grab medication, including insulin, as they say the smoke closed in. >> i remember when we were leaving, i couldn't breathe. >> reporter: the flames tied to louisiana's drought, and the hottest summer on record. across the country, nearly 90 million are under heat alerts through the weekend. and now, another threat. a tropical depression barrelling towards the gulf. in florida today, the governor issuing a state of emergency ahead of the storm that could slam them next week. >> priscilla joins us now. the shelter there is nearing capacity. >> reporter: that's right, jose, i'm told there are nearly 70 people here. dinner has just arrived, so, folks looking to get a hot meal before they turn in for the night. and the red cross says they are prepared to open a second shelter and continue taking residents in. jose? >> priscilla thompson in louisiana, thank you. tonight, the death toll in the maui wildfires stands at 115. that number is expected to rise, as officials for the first time put out a list this weekend of nearly 400 still missing, but that has led to some much-needed good news, as many as 100 people on the list have now come forward to say they are alive and well. 60 years after martin luther king jr. led a massive march to the lincoln memorial in washington, thousands retraced his steps today, picking up his mission while vowing to take on new challenges. aaron gilchrist was there. >> reporter: a sea of people to take in a call to action. >> let's not give up. let's not give in, let's not give out. >> reporter: this gathering, the 60th anniversary of the original march on washington for jobs and freedom. dr. martin luther king jr. delivering his dream of peace and equality, demanding civil rights for all. >> what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation. >> reporter: organizers of today's event embracing dr. king's charge, and adding a new generation of issues. the fight to stop violence against minority groups. >> we cannot allow the dark forces of extremism, intolerance, and hate to corrupt us and make us cynical. >> reporter: the fight for voting rights. >> it's really important for us to mobilize and understand the importance of the moment, and also come together in solidarity for action. >> than $200 million in prizes. game show host bob barker died today. he was 99 years old. emily' queta now on the man who was always at the top of his game. ♪♪ >> come on down! come on down! >> reporter: with those three words -- >> come on down! >> reporter: bob barker electrified audiences for 35 years, hosting "the price is right." the game show where con tes tanltestant guess th price of every day items. >> i hear, bob, come on down, every place i go. >> reporter: but just months shy of his 100th birthday, his publicist announcing the world's greatest mc who ever lived, bob barker, has left us. he died of natural causes in his hollywood hills home this morning. fans remembering him with flowers on his walk of fame star. born in darlington, washington, barker spent his early years on an indian reservation in south dakota, where his mother was a schoolteacher. in 1942, he joined the navy, training as a fighter pilot during world war ii. his entertainment career began in radio, with "the bob barker show." >> all right, go. i'm going to go. >> reporter: a big break in television would come six years later, hosting "truth or consequences." >> you like excitement, you have come to the right place. >> reporter: then, in 1972, it was onto the show that would make him a legend and a household name. >> it's "the price is right"! >> reporter: it's become the adam sandler in "happy gilmore." sandler remembering him as "the mast, the myth, best." in 2007, the 83-year-old barker bid a heartfelt good-bye to his deck raids-long career on national tv that soccer executive accused of giving a female player an unwanted kiss. he is now suspended, but refusing to resign. megan fitzgerald has the latest. >> reporter: tonight, world soccer's governing body taking action. fifa suspending spanish football federation president luis rubiales for 90 days and ordering him, along with the spanish federation, to stay away from star player jennifer hermoso. it comes after rubiales grabbed hermoso's head and kissed her on the lips during the world cup award ceremony. he also appeared to grab his crotch with spain's queen and her 16-year-old daughter standing nearby. an act he later apologized for. now, the entire national team refusing to play another match until he resigns. but friday afternoon, defiant. >> no. >> reporter: rubiales repeatedly saying he won't resign, calling the controversy false feminism. hermoso reacting online, saying it wasn't consensual, writing, in part, "i felt vulnerable and a victim of an impulse-driven -- and simply put, i was not respected." the spanish football federation releasing a series of pictures, where they say hermoso grabbed rubiales, lifting him up for a hug, calling that, an action of force, and insisting he didn't lie about what happened on stage. but for now, rubiales has to stay away from all soccer-related activities until fifa's investigation into his actions is complete. megan fitzgerald, nbc rampant. >> i just decided that i was not going to stand for it anymore. >> reporter: bob went after a thief at his new york city liquor store, followed her outside, when he says her partner pulled a knife. >> i got into a fit of rage when i was confronted with this woman who just didn't really care. >> reporter: the problem nationwide, repeat offenders. here in new york city, officials say of the tens of thousands of retail thefts a year, 30% are committed by just 327 criminals. the nypd says it's that group of criminals arrested and rearrested 6,000 times that they're focused on. >> it's a small population of people creating a large chaotic scene. >> reporter: in queens, with its 2 million-plus population, the d.a. and cops trying a new strategy. banning that small population of people from even entering the shops. so, what is the goal here? put it out here just so they know, you know, we're not going to tolerate this behavior anymore. >> put a bottle in his pants. >> reporter: if a store owner has a customer that's stolen from them or harassed customers, they can ask police to ban that person from ever setting foot in their store again. and if they do, they can be hit with more serious charges and jail time. >> you want to continue this behavior, then the charges should match. >> how you doing? >> reporter: police say many locally owned stores have signed up for the program, along with the big chains like cvs and right aid, equally hit hard. 83 people now banned from stores. seven arrested for trying to return. bob is happy the nypd and local d.a. are trying to help. >>
