Im laura garcia. Well check in with mike with a look at the morning commute. First, lets look at the forecast with kari. Its a great start to our friday morning and we also have more kid headed back to school today. Were seeing just a few clouds overhead, but a lot more of this. Well keep temperatures down today, it wont warm up as quickly as weve seen recently. So i think about 9 00 to 10 00, well continue to see clouds. The rest of the day were headed for sunshine and it will be in the upper 70s by lunchtime. If youre going to the Farmers Market or heading out for your lunch break, its going to be nice and mild. Were headed for the mid80s in the trivalley. North bay temperatures in the low 80s. This will be cooler than weve seen recently, but were also tracking big changes by the end of the weekend. We were talking a lot about the remnants of a tropical system coming in. Ill talk about that coming up in a few minutes. Mike is tracking a crash. How is it looking . Overall i wanted to give folks the big view. Trivalley looking good from the initial impression. Green sensors around most of the bay. We expect an easier friday. We have that except for a key spot, vasco road, a crash, possibly two reported. One around dalton, we see a jamup as folks are coming down making their way to 580. That might make 580 a little easier to the dublin interchange. But vasco southbound theres excess slowing. Over here, the bay bridge metering lights are on. No backup. Back to you. Thank you very much. We are covering breaking news this morning, an officerinvolved shooting in the east bay. Now, were working to learn more information as investigators are still on the scene. These are live pictures from Sunrise Drive in martinez. Police tell us it all started about 3 30 this morning when officers were responding to a burglary at the velvet cannabis and weed dispensary. There was a crash involving suspects. Now, police havent given us the circumstances that led up to the Police Shooting or if a suspect was hit. We do know that no officers were hit. Police have taped off the area. Theyre now asking people to avoid it, as we learn more information, of course, well bring you the latest updates and online. Also developing this morning, were learning more about the fbi raids of former east bay Police Officers. We have Surveillance Video to show you from oakley. This is all a result of an 18month investigation into an alleged criminal network between antioch and Pittsburg Police officers. During the investigation, the federal government seized cell phones, and that is when we first learned about racist and homophobic Text Messages sent between antioch officers. The raids and news coming as a shock to neighbors, who say the officer moved in there about a year ago. Knowing that he lives there now, its a little distressing, but you never know who your neighbors are, anyways. Were getting statements from both police departments, pittsburgs pd saying consistent with our previous statements, we cannot expand on the details of this allegation, as there is an ongoing investigation, and now a criminal proceeding. Acting Antioch Police chief says the arrest of current and former Antioch Police officers is disheartening and undermines the incredible work our staff does on a daily basis. No individual, including a police officer, is above the law. One of the officers apprehended, morteza amiri, his Attorney Says he would have come in peacefully had he been given the opportunity. These dramatics that took place in the Early Morning hours were unnecessary. There were flashbangs, he was surrounded, and there was use, as i understand it, of a megaphone. New this morning, as San Francisco unified students return to school, the superintendent is delivering a sobering message, the district is on the verge of a fiscal cliff. In an interview with the chronicle, superintendent matt wayne says the districts facilities need about 6 billion worth of improvements. He says Staffing Levels have gone up, but theres still a 15 vacancy rate for teaching positions. The superintendent says possible School Closures and staffing cuts could be a part of future decisions. He plans to outline the current challenges at a School Board Meeting later this month. Were tracking hurricane hilary, which has strengthened to a category 4 storm, making its way toward Southern California, threatening to bring strong winds and heavy range, according to the National Weather service. This hurricane is expected to cause significant impacts. If hurricane hilary makes landfall in california as a Tropical Storm, it will be the first one in 84 years. Kari, youve been tracking the difference, i guess, between floridas coast and hurricanes, as their water is so much warmer than ours . Yeah, its so much warmer. We are also in an el nino year where our surface temperatures are warmer than average, so thats part of the reason why it could make it to san diego as at least a Tropical Storm and then quickly weaken thereafter. This is such a powerful hurricane as a category 4, and its still well to the south of us around baja, california, moving closer to cabo, but it has wind speeds of 145 Miles Per Hour. As it rushes quickly farther off toward the north and makes it toward san diego, that area around sunday afternoon, it still could pack wind speeds of 60 Miles Per Hour and have a lot of rain. So we are making preparations now in those areas to deal with the potential of some flash flooding as it spreads through, and then we see the track that continues to take it off toward the north and east. As of right now, it keeps a lot of that heavy rain just to the east of the bay area, but were still watching out for the impacts of this because a slight jog to the right or left could make a huge difference on where we see the biggest impact. Well continue to follow this over the next several days. Mike has been following where we can find lower gas prices. Kari, some things arent changing and yet theyre changing. Spartan gas in san jose no longer among the ten best in the state but Holding Steady with the same price. We see 4. 39 in san jose at spartan gas. In dublin, 4. 65 at a a express. Weve got two 7s, 4. 77 at Lucky Service on sir Francis Drake boulevard. Youre sharing the roadways nicely but westbound 80 jams up out of san pablo, a crash at carlson blocking one lane. This is the time we typically see the build, so this is bad timing there. This is keeping the timing better at the bay bridge toll plaza. Its keeping things from backing up where the metering lights are on. Back to you. Meta employees facing a new reality, head back to the office. Just ahead on today in the bay, the new mandate for workers postpandemic, and the severe consequences they may face for ignoring it. Also ahead, a big boost in bridging the digital divide. Were headed for sunshine, and as the last School Bell Rings and you start the weekend, it will be a very nice 70 degrees there. Were getting a look at all of our microclimates and tracking the remnants of what will be hilary coming up in a few minutes. This is the berkeley curve. The taillights moving smoothly. Light traffic here because a lot of folks are held up on the eastshore freeway coming through richmond. A crash is still going on on westbound 80 and another crash on vasco road. New this morning, oakland unified leaders are announcing funding to help students connect to the classroom. The schools superintendent, along with city leaders, plan to announce a more than 13 million federal grant to give students laptops. It will help pay for wifi hot spots to connect to the internet. The funding is made possible from the Emergency Connectivity Fund through the federal communications commission. A News Conference will be held later this afternoon. Niners fans, maybe brock purdy is game day ready after all. Head coach Kyle Shanahan says hes not ruling out having purdy play a limited number of downs in tomorrow nights preseason game against denver at levis. Doctors have given him the all clear for his elbow. Trey lance and sam darnold will get most of the snaps as they battle for the backup spot. Are you missing jimmy g . Jimmy garoppolo is becoming popular in the raiders locker room. He may make his debut against the rams tomorrow night and he says he likes the teams chemistry. Im big on the group atmosphere, away from the field, how do you bond, talk to each other. I think those Little Things add up and that gives you a better chance to win on sundays. Its a team sport. New reports seem to solidify the story that jimmy g and the niners had a rough parting last winter. Its amazing what a new season can do to help everyone turn the page. Happening today, a trail that wraps around the bay area one step closer to being finished. The eventual plan is for the sf bay trail to entirely wrap around the entire bay area, connecting 500 miles of trails. And today east Bay Regional Park District will celebrate closing another half mile gap. This is at the Martin Luther king jr. Regional shoreline, which improves safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. It includes a renovated launch, a repaved staging area, parking lot, and a oneacre Marsh Habitat restoration that starts at 11 00. Time to get the hiking boots out, or the kayak. I love that trail. I was there for earth day to do a cleanup event. Its a really nice, calming area in the middle of a city. Its nice to see. Were so lucky, all the areas we have here. Absolutely. Were going to have some nice weather, too. Were very lucky in that sense, too, especially when you consider whats happening for the summer throughout much of the rest of the country and what were looking at for Southern California. As we start out this morning, looking at San Francisco, it is a cloudy start to the day. This is our usual marine layer that comes in and gives us a cloudy morning, keeps our temperatures milder. It also retreats back to the coastline and we get the breeze coming off of that and it keeps our coastal areas a lot cooler. Thats what were expecting today, San Francisco reaching 71 degrees, across the bay to oakland, 75, and 85 in dublin, with upper 80s in the south county. Tomorrow it will be just a little warmer for the inland valleys as we get much more sunshine, less of a breeze, and some in the inland east bay as well as the south county will reach into the low 90s. Weve been talking a lot about this, hurricane hilary, which has strengthened overnight, now a category 4 hurricane, a very powerful storm as it continues to move closer to the cabo area. We can see the outer rain bands making it into those regions as it moves into the westnorthwest over the next several days. This is expected to have a high impact as it moves up baja, california, into the san diego area, and makes landfall on sunday afternoon as a Tropical Storm. So this is the first one weve seen in about 84 years, on landfalling Tropical Storm for Southern California. And notice that the track takes it well to the east of us, and it takes all of the rain on the eastern side of that storm. So as we continue to track it, once again, expect it to move in on sunday afternoon, with a lot of really heavy rainfall spreading across Southern California. Were looking at the impacts of flash flooding there, as well as the potential of some heavy rain, some tornadoes possible, as well as a lot of lightning. And a lot of the rain staying east of us. We will have a slight chance of seeing thunderstorms and possibly some lightning with the storms so close by. Rainfall estimates give it anywhere from 2 to possibly over 7 to 8 inches of rainfall, and we will see a slight impact here. But definitely a bigger impact for the Southern California mountains and, once again, we talked about this being a historic storm as it continues to move closer
