Headed back to school today, the serious concerns over Pedestrian Safety this morning, plus an update on the ongoing investigation. Some of us got burned on our arms because we had to go through the fire. Theres space, but its so hot that you can feel it. As the recovery search intensifies on maui, were hearing harrowing stories of survival from the island. Now one San Francisco family was able to make it out of the burning chaos alive. Plus, sounding the alarm about our kids and Mental Health. The all new warning from pediatricians. This is today in the bay. Thanks so much for joining us on this wednesday morning. Im kris sanchez in more marcus washington. Good to have you. Im laura garcia. Big day for thousands of students across the bay area. More than 20 Different School districts starting up today, including Los Altos School district, napa valley unified. Have a great year, kids. Lets list them all. Thats a lot of first day forecasts. Were starting out mild across the bay area. You might want to wear shorts, tshirts. Its a nice start. As we take a look at our live view in San Francisco, were going to see fog over the bay clearing out really quickly. As we get a look at our fremont forecast for the first day of school, the dropoff line will be nice and everyone smiling and welcoming each other back. Its going to be in the mid60s to start and then at pickup time, theyll be like, oh, its hot, can you turn on the airconditioning. Its going to be in the mid80s. Were taking a look at all of our high temperatures around the bay area. Yes, it is definitely still summer. Were hitting 99 in concord and livermore today, and 92 in napa. So well talk about whats ahead coming up. Mike, it seems like its wednesday light . Its wednesdaywednesday. It looked like it was going to be a tough wednesday, things backed up early at the bay bridge toll plaza. Then it kind of held to middle lanes coming off the 880 entrances. A smooth flow of traffic, so its just out of the may. Nothing major. Just a steady flow of traffic. We do see the build through richmond for west 80. I was concerned about this crash west 37, the commute direction at 121. The earlier crash cleared. Weve had some recovery but theres still more build coming out of vallejo, typical. Same thing with concord and walnut creek. The south bay, the early slowing that started to get more focused in san jose looks like its kind of calming down, but well track it. A tragic crash in San Francisco leaves an important reminder this morning, which happens to be the first day back to school for San Francisco unified. Last night a 4yearold girl in a stroller and her father were hit by an suv at a crosswalk near oracle park. Sadly, that little girl died. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is live in San Francisco. Ginger, this is really a sad reminder to people that we need to slow down and pay attention. Reporter thats right, kris and laura. Especially on a day like today when tens of thousands of children will be crossing the streets just a few hours from now, making their way back into the classroom, because as you mentioned, it is the first day back to school for San Francisco unified. Going back to last nights story, we do not have an update on the dads condition this morning. He was brought to San Francisco general last night to be treated for lifethreatening injuries. His 4yearold daughter, tragically, did not make it. Now, this was the scene at 4th and king streets where that fatal accident happened. Its a block away from oracle park in San Francisco around the china and mission bay neighborhood. The mercedes suv was still at the scene two hours after the crash. The driver was there cooperating with the investigation. Sfpd has not given many details about the actual crash. They did, however, say the scene was chaotic, as emergency crews fought to get the suv off of the child. They also confirmed that the family at the center of this tragic accident is from out of town. We learned more details from a man that was driving this white pickup, who says he saw things unfold. He agreed to share what he saw as long as we did not show his face or give his name. Like im telling the Police Officer, i was the one that waved them to go ahead because they had the right, they had still 20 seconds on that timer. Reporter now, he says the family, which is the mom, the dad and the little girl who was in a stroller, which the dad was pushing, began to cross when the driver of the suv turned from the middle righthand turn lane. He says the light was green for the driver and for him to turn, but the intersection is marked as a pedestrian crossing. That family, the witness says, had a lot of time still to get across the street. Now, sfpd says drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in this. But a cautionary tale and a very sad one, as you mentioned, kris, this morning, especially as we remind drivers, everyone on the road, to slow down and keep your eyes on the road on this first day of school. Back to you guys. Those traffic patterns are changing so dramatically right now. I feel sorry for that family. Thank you, ginger. Recovery teams are searching fireravaged parts of maui for victims. We now have learned the death toll from the fires is up to 106 people. Officials say they will start the process of identifying the victims today. About 1,300 people are still unaccounted for. Authorities are warning that the fires could pose longterm health risks to residents because of the chemical compounds now contaminating the air and the water. Officials say the cost of all of that damage to maui could go up to about 7 billion. Weve heard so many harrowing stories about people fighting to survive the fastmoving inferno. A San Francisco family that escaped the flames jumped into the ocean. Theyre now sharing their video and story of survival. The soto family says as the flames grew around them, they parked their car and jumped off a ledge into the water. Waves slammed against them as they just attempted to hold onto the rocks. The siblings say they kept their eyes closed most of the time because of the thick, dark smoke. Some family members were burned and bruised. The family says they were in the water for six hours before being rescued. Thankfully we were one of the ones who made it out. We did see some lifeless bodies on the shore once the firemen came. It was just a scary sight to see. I froze when i saw the lifeless body. The family says theyre lucky to be alive and theyll never forget the devastation in lahaina. Were trying to make it easy for you to help. We have a list of verified organizations that are collecting donations on our website, nbcbayarea. Com. Just click on the how to help maui link. Its right up there in our trending bar. New in the 6 00 hour, three groups of pediatricians and emergency medicine providers are sounding the alarm over Mental Health crises for kids. That group, along with the American College of Emergency Physicians and Emergency Nurses Association recommend developing teams that can respond to pediatric Mental Health crises in schools, in their doctors offices and at home. They also want to add pediatric Mental Health professionals to emergency departments. Later this morning, east bay municipal utility district will be at the san leandro reservoir retrieving cars that have been illegally dumped. The groups downtown streets Team San Jose and Guadalupe River Park Conservancy are beautifying the park and river trails. It begins at 9 00 in the morning. Good thing its early because its been heating up in the afternoon. Early in the morning it feels so humid, okay, its already warm. So were going to see that again today as we start out with a live look outside in san jose. It is clear this morning, different picture compared to what we had yesterday morning where we were watching some lightning flashes in the distance. We do still have that chance of seeing isolated showers and thunderstorms today. Its also the first day of school for kids heading out for campbell unified and Campbell Union high school district. Its going to be in the upper 60s at dropoff time and we are all clear throughout the day. At pickup time, its at a hot 90 degrees with sunshine. As we take a look at our high temperatures around the bay area, were anywhere from upper 90s to mid60s, as we see that spread in temperatures across our microclimates, but we will have muggy conditions and more sunshine for the afternoon. Well talk about more changes ahead in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. Mike, hopefully you can find some lower gas prices somewhere. Were doing the best we can. You might not love my prices, but i dont like the muggy on your forecast. In san ramon, 4. 89, well call out the exxon. Lets get out to the roadways and talk about whats going on as far as the morning patterns. The south bay did clear up from the first early slowdown. I was concerned about that. I see more slowdown, a crash south 880 approaching highway 92. Its closer to the interchange than marked on the map but it looks like things are moving a little better. The earlier crash on 37 did clear around 121. We have a gradual slowdown and were at almost a half hour out of vallejo and into novato. But the Chinese Government said nothing, not yes, not no, just nothing. Many wonder if its payback for all the Technology Restrictions washington is putting on chinese companies. But with no approval, intel will have to give up on the plan. U. S. Congressman don bacon from nebraska says the fbi warned him chinese hackers read his emails earlier this year. We do know hackers got into lots of sensitive u. S. Government accounts, taking advantage of a security error by microsoft. He documents it, says it out loud. The Washington Post was the first to notice the slowdown, which has since stopped. x has had no response, but they never had response to inquiries. Im not going to give them the dignity of saying they didnt respond. My post took a minute to go live. Ill research that. That is interesting. I dont think its you particularly. Trending this morning, First Responders in San Francisco going the extra mile to help a college student. The grant parents of the San Francisco state student helping a young woman move in on friday to campus, but their car rolled over in an accident. The good news, theyre both expected to be okay. But sf fire posted on social media that they were concerned she wouldnt get her personal belongings. Thats when firefighters stepped in and helped move the young woman in themselves. Isnt that nice . Wow. I always think on some of those hills where you park this way or up the hill, it just looks like theyre all going to roll down the hill. When i went to school at cal a long time ago, when they moved in, she had trouble walking up the hill and she wasnt sure my dads car would make it. They had to park at the bottom and trudge. I remember driving a stick shift in San Francisco. That is terrifying. I did it, too. Just go around me, please. Roll back, roll up. A lot of fun. Lets check the forecast right now. I have a view of San Francisco. A cool view of the sun rising this morning. A little bit of fog rolling across. Its mostly clear. Were going to have a really nice day. And due to the lack of fog that weve seen or the fact that it clears out so quickly, our valleys are going to be heating up again. Were reaching into the 90s and a few spots reaching 100 degrees. We also have an elevated fire danger that continues as we get hot, dry and breezy conditions. And then, also, the chance of thunderstorms will linger not only today, but the next few days. Were watching that. Lets get you a look at the first day of School Forecast for sunnyvale unified. Hopefully its a great start. We have some nice weather. At least the dropoff time is in the mid60s, but it will be heating up as we reach into the upper 80s at pickup time with a lot of sunshine. It still feels really muggy as we get this area of low pressure that still lingers off the coast. We can see the swirl of the clouds and occasionally lightning strikes. Its drawing in some monsoon moisture and it will stay with us with a chance of showers and thunderstorms through the next few days. After that, we turn our attention to the potential of the remnants of the tropical systems that looks to really bring in a lot of rain for Southern California starting on monday, but as it moves closer to the bay area still packing a lot of moisture. So we may be talking about rain next week and the possibility of some thunderstorms as well for late next monday into tuesday, but in the near term weve seen a lot of storms over the sierra that have been tracking into the bay area. Late this evening we will have a chance of the north bay getting in on some more thunderstorms. Its really hot with our temperatures in the mid to upper 90s for the interior east bay, upper 90s and even 100 in antioch today, while oakland will see a high of 79 degrees. Some mid80s in redwood city, and San Francisco in the mid70s. For the north bay, sonoma reaching 95, and 101 in clear lake. Our temperatures will remain hot, although it does come down slightly for the weekend. Well see a mix of sun and clouds. Then watching out for the potential of thunderstorms next week, on monday and tuesday as well. Then for San Francisco, its in the mid70s today, but it does look like well get more clouds and fog and cooler temperatures for the weekend. Mike, youre reading those clues at the bay bridge. We saw a little bit lighter traffic, things were moving. All lanes are filled in, but look over here, things are starting to move better. Looser at the bay bridge. I was wondering what was keeping traffic from that portion. We had a crash that did clear, but still very slow for west 80, so i think that may ripple down. There may be a roadside fire. Im tracking a report. But still, the slowing clears there and that may mean a lighter eastshore freeway right now. Were looking at the rest of the bay and a smooth drive. We have a crash that has to clear coming into hayward. 6 22 right now. Coming up next, nbc bay area responds. Yes, so many kids heading back today. Be careful around school zones as there will be a lot more people out walking. Were also starting out with nice temperatures. So were going to maybe spend more time out there today, as we take a live look outside in San Francisco. We can see the fog giving some of the buildings there a nice cool hug to start out the first day of school. Lets head to fremont for that first day of School Forecast, starting out mostly sunny at dropoff time in the mid60s. It will be warm at pickup time. Maybe if youre walking home or stopping by the park on the way home from school, its going to be warm, so bring a bottle of water. Were going to see temperatures for the inland areas reaching into the upper 90s today, and well have a wide range of temperatures across our microclimates. Mike, youre seeing the commute building through the east bay. Yeah, on the richmond side of the bridge to san rafael, they see traffic at the toll plaza. Well show you a similar case at the bay bridge where things are starting to build coming off the berkeley curve, heading down the eastshore freeway. Ive circled a lot of slowing in the north bay, which is Holding Traffic up, even from 37, which continues to build as well. We have more slowing for 880 south past san mateo and now the dumbarton bridge through san jose, no surprises, we see slowing for north 101 and now just starting to see sensors dip just about northbound 87 around kerner, starting to slow down at capital as well. Alameda County District attorney pamela price has only been in office for about eight months, but the effort to recall her is moving forward. Last night Alameda County officially accepted a petition aimed at removing her from office. Its being spearheaded by a Community Member group that calls themselves save Alameda County for everybody. The wife of Kevin Nishita is a member of the group. He was the Security Guard and former Police Officer who was shot and killed in oakland back in 2021. His wife believes that suspects are not being prosecuted aggressively. I dont want any family to suffer what we have suffered. I dont want anyone to go through this. We need to know that these people that are committing these crimes, these violent crimes, will be prosecuted. Pamela price officially has ten days to respond to the recall notice. After that, the group will have to gather 90,000 more signatures if the issue is to be place odd the ballot. Now, we did reach out to the District Attorneys office for a response. They referred us back to the pamela price campaign, which did not respond. The recall Group Expects the effort will cost about 8 million. The search continues this morning for victims after the nations deadliest fire ripped through maui. We now know the death toll has risen to 106. President biden says nearly 500 federal personnel have been deployed. That includes a team to help identify victims. Coroners, pathologists and xray and Lab Technicians are there on the island now. Loved ones are being asked to get their cheeks swabbed for dna so those samples will be compared to the dna of victims. Hundreds are still missing, many feared dead. Theres a group from the Central Coast planning a mission to rescue animals displaced by the wildfires. Theyre located here in california, headed to maui. Theyre using drones with infrared technology to pick up animals heat signals and pinpoint their location. Once theyve found the animals, the next step is to bribe them with care and hopefully reunite them with families. The teams say the biggest challenge might be the heat. With the temperatures of maui dropping into the low 70s at night, even, its going to be challenging for a lower level infrared drone. Theyll be searching for cats, dogs, a handful of bird species, and some mongoose. Theyve saved animals all around the world, all the way to the war in ukraine. The today show will continue Coverage Later this morning. The mayor will be live with an update from the island. You can watch that ahead at 7 00 right after today in the bay. Back here at home, later this morning one of our wine country regions will bless the grapes in hopes of a good harvest this year. Today in the bays bob redell joins us live from Livermore Valley wine country. This will be the first harvest since the drought ended. Are they talking about what the harvest will be like . Reporter yeah. Good morning to you, laura and kris. That is a question i posed to brent, the winemaker here in livermore where the blessing of the grapes will take place later this morning. That is an annual tradition. Brent says that the 2023 vintage is looking very promising for a number of reasons, our historic winter storms saturated the soils, the vines grew a little sooner as a result, which means healthier plants. Brent didnt have to water until a good two to three months later than usual because of rains, with about 20 to 30 less water overall. There is a little less fruit on the vine because of the mild spring and a couple of rainy periods in the middle of the bloom. The upside, those looser clusters of grapes are less prone to mold and mildew. Over the past several years the drought has forced winemakers to harvest the fruit earlier to avoid the heat. Brent anticipates this years harvest to start in two to three weeks from now, which historically is along a more normal timeframe. Its the goldilocks thing, it has to be just right. So far, this year its been just right. We had the mild start, but then weve had heat spells that havent been extreme for the most part, theyve been early enough in the development of the grapes that we really havent seen much in the way of sunburn or any negative issues from that. We just serve to cause minor stress on the vines, but in a good way. Reporter brent expects to harvest the last of his 17 varietals late october, early november, some of which you can see on this driveby of his winery here in livermore. He points out a lot that can happen between now and then, but in terms of weather, he anticipates more of the same. Many heat waves, followed by cooler periods. Now, a pastor, a Catholic Priest and rabbi will bless the grapes this morning here at las positas. The organization hosting the event is lvwine. Org. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Thats a really nice assignment, bob. Yeah. Also, you were supposed to deliver a punch line about the priest and rabbi walking into a winery. Reporter i mixed it up a little bit. I started with a presbyterian pastor. Here is to a good harvest. Thank you so much. Salut. Right now its just coffee. Well start with that. Time to get the kids out the door for school. Happy first day for all of the kids. Wake up, time to go. Its a busy day, but lets also talk about livermore, where we are going to have more hot temperatures and heading into the weekend we will have just a slight cooldown. Really not seeing a significant cooldown here, but well also add in the potential of some rain early next week. So lets make it through today as we send the kids out in oakland. Temperatures in the upper 70s, and in morgan hill reaching 97 degrees. Second day of school there, right . So were going to have hot valley temperatures, San Francisco in the mid70s, and for all of us it feels pretty humid out there. Still watching out for the chance of some isolated showers and thunderstorms, especially later this evening in parts of the north bay. So were going to talk more about that and whats ahead coming up. Mike, youre taking us to the north bay for some changes on the freeways. Weve been talking about early on we had a crash west 80 and theres still activity on the right shoulder, possibly sticking out into one lane. It continues with slowing. There were two other crashes in the backup. Theyve both cleared without any major injuries. We are looking at now traffic starting to build over on both the bridges that it feeds down toward, the carquinez and benicia bridges. We see sensors starting to slow and traffic is making its way down here. We see slowing through richmond. We have this build out of concord, but so far walnut creek interchange moves just fine. Well look ahead to tonight. Remember, theres a closure for the webster tube getting out of oakland toward the island of alameda. You cannot go under the water because the tube will have Maintenance Work and be closed until 5 00 a. M. Tomorrow. You can still use the bridges over the water to the south. No surprise for the locals that live on alameda. In San Francisco we have a midday game, so watch after the game. That may push into the afterwork traffic. Back to you. 6 41 right now. A hawaiian man being called a hero after rescuing a toddler from the devastating flames in maui. Its a touching story we told you about earlier this week. Im going to continue to say as i said, which is we see the legal system being weaponized against political opponents. That is unamerican and unacceptable. I dont think the first time that we put a former president , a current president ial candidate in prison in the middle of a race running against his political opponent running the justice department, should be on the back of untested legal theories. Candidates like scott and ramaswamy, nikki haley, theyre trying to convince trump voters to vote for them instead, while at the same time supporting trump. That leaves them in a very tough position. Indeed. Thank you very much, scott. It was a tense game for the giants, as they continued their playoff race. Take a look at this. Bottom of the fourth. Its almost time to start making breakfast and get ready for the day. Let go of those eggos. Were seeing a beautiful start, our wednesday morning, everybody heading out for work. Lets talk about what to expect. The weather we had yesterday continues today with a lot of valley heat. Temperatures headed for the 90s and triple digits in the hottest spots inland. We continue with an elevated fire danger as well as a potential of thunderstorms and lightning. But it is all clear to start out this morning. A look at the school day forecast for campbell unified, in the upper 60s between 8 00 to 9 00, and as we go throughout the rest of the day the temperatures heating up to 90. So pretty hot and humid. We have an area of low pressure, you can see the swirl of clouds off the coast. Its drawing in all of this moisture across the region, this monsoon moisture thats been causing thunderstorms over some of the upper elevations. But its not budging, and its also going to cause more problems as we go through the next few days, with elevated fire danger. And then for the weekend we turn our attention to another storm system, potentially a weakening tropical system that could bring in a lot of moisture to Southern California in the form of rain and thunderstorms, and thats going to be moving our way next week as it looks like we could see that midlevel moisture pumping up once again, and so the thunderstorm chances will continue and possibly a lot more rain. So were watching out for that for early next week. Well continue to keep an eye on that as we get closer. In the near term, we are looking at the potential of showers and thunderstorms late this evening, moving from the Sacramento Valley into the north bay that could also hit the east bay as well. Any lightning strikes could cause wildfire threats, especially with hot temperatures, breezy conditions. Look at these highs for today, with mid to upper 90s, and we could see a couple of spots hitting 100 degrees. Wide range in temperatures, with oakland reaching 79 degrees and mid60s for half moon bay. San francisco reaching into the upper 60s and mid70s. The north bay temperatures up to about 95 in sonoma and 102 in ukiah. Our temperatures go down just slightly, but each and every day we will at least have a slight chance of thunderstorms. Then it goes way up with those thunderstorm chances early next week. Mike, now youre seeing the commute kick in. Yeah, its really kicking in. The bay bridge toll plaza looks kind of the same.
