As the death toll continues to rise now at 55, authorities are concerned they will find even more bodies. By one estimate, upwards of a thousand people could still be missing. The crews here on the ground are winning some battles and losing others. On the island streets where residents made harrowing escapes through raging walls of fire. Lets go reporter so many others did not. This wildfire now the second deadliest in modern history. I do not know what the final number is going to be, and its going to be horrible and tragic. It is a community. So the amount of loss is incredible. Reporter in the skeletal and now desolate landscape, without power, internet or even radio coverage, Officials Say they have no way to determine how many are still missing. Authorities say hundreds of homes have been lost. A growing tally thats personal for families like patrick sullivans. How do you describe the emotions that you are feeling right now . Well, right here its pretty tough. But well be okay. Reporter from the air and on the ground, the National Guard is helping crews battle at least three wild fires still burning on maui. The hardest hit areas still impossible to access. Kirkman grieving the loss of his home and his fathers ashes. Found some of these old pictures, and i said, i should take a picture of it because it is all i have now. Reporter even boats in the harbor were consumed by the inferno. After 80mileperhour winds fan the initial flames, initially the weather conditions have improved as of today, but now theyre focused on the missing. Savannah, back to you. Miguel, thank you. Were joined now by the mayor of maui county. Good morning to you, sir. Aloha, savannah. Aloha, and i know the aloha spirit is alive and well, but what a trauma you have been through. Can you just share with everybody what you have seen, what the situation is right now in maui . Certainly. We have seen devastation, destruction, immeasurable loss, loss of life, loss of historical places, properties, businesses. But im confident as a community and as a coming together we will rebuild. Indeed. Right now, though, you are still looking for the missing. The death toll stands at 55. Is that a number you expect to rise . Yeah. You know, i think that number could go up, according to those that have been doing the recovery. Our police department, the coast guard, the National Guard, the different groups that are helping us here on the island. That is the number of people they found that are outside of the buildings. So we have not yet searched in the interior of the buildings. Were waiting for fema to help with that search, as they are equipped to handle the hazmat conditions of the buildings that have been burned. Sir, can you paint the picture of the difficulty that you and First Responders are facing right now. There is no power. There is no communications. You are on an island, literally. How difficult is the situation right now . Well, that part of the island, what we call the west side in kaanapali, theyre impacted by no power and, therefore, no water. They have no communication. No internet, no cell phone. So thats the challenge. We have been sending people out. We have been sending crews out with supplies and water and tomorrow we will be stepping that up even more. An incredible amount of support has come from our federal partners, our state partners, as well as other counties and businesses. The entire community has come together. And people outside of our community have also reached out to us to offer assistance, donations. So we are going to take full advantage of the help we have been offered. And, again, right now, our focus is on finding any any missing persons. We want to reunite families. We want to give people information, whether their Family Member is at one of our shelters or whether they are among those that have perished. We need to get that information to our to our citizens. Finally, sir, some local residents are saying they never heard of any of those sirens, those warning sirens that would normally sound when a Natural Disaster is looming. Do you know anything about that . Do you think the siren system, the warning system, worked sufficiently . I think this was an impossible situation. The winds that hit us on that side of the island and, in fact, in other parts of the island in some areas got up to 80 miles an hour. Some sustained between 45 and 60, 65. So everything happened so quickly. I cant comment on whether or not the sirens sounded or not, but i know that the fires came up so quickly and they spread so fast. There were some initial initially when there was a smaller fire, homes were evacuated. And, again, many, many people evacuated from their homes. We have 2,100 people in shelters on tuesday night. So many people were sent to shelters. And thats not including the many visitors who sheltered in place at their hotels and hotel rooms in kaanapali was the fire had not gone to that area. But there was no power. Such an unprecedented incident. So many people love maui, have so much affection and care what you are going through. Thank you for your time. Thank you. Thank you. Well hear from more of the survivors and the heroes, some of the doctors there on the front lines coming up. Such a desperate situation there. The economy, for the first time in more than a year, inflation has picked up with Consumer Prices rising by 3. 2 in july. What does it mean for your wallet. Here to explain is brian cheung. 3. 2 . We know the feds target rate is 2 . Ticked over last month as well. What do you see in these numbers . Give us the good news and the bad news . Inflation tells us the rate in change in prices over the last year. And that number is dramatically better this time than it was in the summer of last year. Now, for what its worth, high inflation and positive figure you see on inflation means figures are still rising. Albeit as a slower pace. Food and housing, rent and mortgage payments remaining very expensive for americans. Thats the reason why for the federal reserve, that will l rel continue. Those are various housing and food that everybody feels. So the fed has been on this aggressive path of raising rates to try to bring down inflation obviously its worked. Its dramatically down from a year ago, as you mentioned what do you think the fed does now . Will there be a rate hike . 3 is still above that now, for the federal reserve, the effort has been raising Interest Rates to deliberately slow the economy and bring the rate down. 3 is a good improvement but for the fed, theyre looking at this and saying, its not yet Mission Accomplished so could they again raise Interest Rates when they get to the next meeting, which is in september. Its possible. The markets say maybe for right now, but there is a lot of data between now and then. And it is a lagging indicator, too exactly. Its tricky brian, thank you very much. The Supreme Court has temporary blocked a deal with the maker of oxycontin about objections raised by the Justice Department. Good morning, craig this deal would have limited how responsible the Sackler Family would be for the damage caused by opioids made by Purdue Pharma the government challenged that deal, and now the court will hear the argument out. A massive settlement for Purdue Pharma is on hold this morning after the Supreme Court temporarily blocked the deal that would protect members of the Sackler Family for more on opoidrelated lawsuits Purdue Pharma made oxycontin and a lot of money for the Sackler Family the drug bought in an estimated 35 billion for the company. Using aggressive marketing tactics, millions of americans became addicted to the open i didnt do. Sheryl lost her sons, hori and shawn. I lost my children. I lost two of my children. Thats a life sentence in itself. Reporter such deals led to an avalanche of lawsuits the crisis dramatized on hulus dope sick. Purdue pharma filed for bankruptcy in 2019 under the terms of the bankruptcy settlement, members of the Sackler Family would be shed ffuture lawsuits in exchange for 6 billion that could be used to settle opoidrelated claims but the Justice Department says they should not be able to use Legal Protections designed for debtors. It would leave in place a road map for wealthy corporations and individuals to misuse the bankruptcy system. What is the issue the Supreme Court wants to look at the Supreme Court wants to look at whether people who dont file nor bankruptcy but have some connection to a bankruptcy should get the benefit of a release. The Bankruptcy Court has done that here for the sacklers, and the Supreme Court is deciding whether that violate it is law. Reporter but for many families involved, there is a human toll to further delay. There are hundreds of families who have lost, hundreds and they just want it over Purdue Pharma says it is confident in the legality of the plan, and it is optimistic, it says, that the Supreme Court will uphold the court agreement. The court will hear oral arguments in the case in december, and it is expected to issue a ruling next year. So everything is on hold until then yes and those families are still in phenomenal pain.
