Education without breaking the bank. Bay Area Community colleges now offering bachelors degrees. Were breaking down the new program and how it compares with traditional fouryear schools. This is today in the bay. Thanks so much for joining us on this friday morning. Im kris sanchez. Laura garcia is off. Im marcus washington. Its time to get a look at what we can expect this morning. Developing right now, that situation still nowhere near settled in the island of maui, this from those wildfires. They have erupted this week causing massive destruction and theyre not fully contained. A new drone video shows how extensive the devastation is in the Historic Town of lahaina. The number of confirmed deaths now is at 55 people. Authorities are telling lahaina residents to stay away from the fire zone where they believe more bodies are likely to be recovered. Hospitals are now stretched to their limits, treating the injured, and thousands of people have no power at home. Many people, like this surf instructor, have nothing left but the clothing on their backs. Pretty much lost everything. Me and a few of my friends stayed back. We tried to save as much people as we could, pulled a few people out of the water. Ran into a burning building with just surf shorts and a bathing suit top. You need skills and you need to be smart. President biden has declared a major disaster for the state of hawaii, freeing up federal assistance, and the governor says it may take months to repair the infrastructure in the areas hardest hit. Were looking at weather conditions. Meteorologist kari hall is monitoring that. We know personally those strong winds can certainly fuel those flames. How are things looking now . We are seeing the winds calming down and we are seeing a little bit of a change in the weather pattern. We talked about the weather setup that happened with a very strong hurricane well to the south of the island and High Pressure setting up to the north. What happened was that the winds funneled through this area, moving from high to low pressure, and it caused whatever flames that did get started to move very quickly. We had about 60mileperhour wind gusts. Were seeing the winds coming down to about 32 Miles Per Hour and the weather conditions today are expected to be much better, with winds at about 15 to 25 Miles Per Hour per hour, and some of the gusts reaching about 30 with higher humidity, which could possibly slow the spread of some of those flames, and hopefully that will be the case as we go throughout today. Thank you, kari. A number of people in the bay area are still praying and waiting to find out if their loved ones survived the wildfire on maui. Today in the bays bob redell is joining us from sjc where flights have been arriving. We know the bay area is going to send resources over to the island. Reporter correct. Good morning, marcus and kris. The red cross, Northern California coastal division, says that 13 of its volunteers are already in hawaii or en route. We believe one of those volunteers will be departing later this morning for hawaii. The wildfires that began tuesday night, as youre well aware, sadly destroyed most of lahaina, thats a Historic Town, a huge tourist attraction on the island of maui. Thats where many of george kaleikinis family is. He is hawaiian, raised in the bay area. He says his family lost everything, his customers along his u. P. S. Route in the north bay where hes been delivering packages for about eight years, they started a gofundme to help his family rebuild. Hes waiting to hear news about missing family members. Weve located two of the relatives, including my oldest brother, confirmation theyre sound and safe. Were still waiting, we have a 98yearold grandmother who we dont have confirmation of whereabouts, where she might be. Reporter finding people, that could be the mission of firefighters who are headed to the island. We know of at least one firefighter in Contra Costa County who is leaving this morning to join the rest of the search and rescue teams there. Most of them arrived anywhere between two weeks to one month mission. Theyre bringing in specialized animals and trying to get communications back up. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Thank you so much, bob. Its just such a hard weight for so many families. We posted a guide on how you can help with donations, if you want to do that. Go to nbcbayarea. Com and click on maui donations in the trending bar. There you will find a list of the organizations that we have verified. Antioch police say that a fight led to a deadly downtown shooting last night. This happened around 6 00 on west 20th street. This is near antioch high school. That fire started wednesday afternoon at the Metal Recycling plant, and Firefighters Want to fully clear it about 24 hours after. Bay area air regulators say the district has issued two violations in response to the fire. The incident is still under investigation. New this morning, more College Students are finding a way to avoid debt while still earning a college degree. Thats because some local Community Colleges now offer bachelors degrees at a fraction of the cost of our fouryear universities. 27 california Community Colleges now offer bachelors degrees in programs like dental hygiene, respiratory care and manufacturing, with the number of programs expected to double. In 2015 state leaders approved the programs to help fill highdemand job positions and offer alternatives that are more accessible and affordable. For example, an Associates Science Degree in dental hygiene at Foothill College will cost you just under 20,000. Another 4,000 and two more years of classes earns you a bachelors degree, and that adds up to one year of cost for your typical fouryear university or college. Foothill graduate Holly Erickson just received her bachelors degree after 20 years as a dental hygienist. She says she has no Student Loan Debt and shes now interviewing for a job in sales. Its not a lot more money. Its pretty similar, actually, to what i make as a dental hygienist in clinical practice, but after 20 years of clinical practice, you know, it starts to wear on the body. You kind of start looking around for what else you can do. This is where we talk about leveling the Playing Field, giving every student the opportunity, no matter what their background is. Three bay Area Community colleges now offer bachelors degrees, De Anza College was recently approved for Automotive Technology management, Foothill College has dental and high jen and respiratory care. 5 08 this morning, taking a live look at san jose. Diamond prices are way down. Industry analysts tell the wall street journal there is a glut of polished diamonds, from threequarters of a karat to 1. 5, are priced at a tenyear low. The diamond industry controls the supply of diamonds to keep that price where it is. Trending this morning, an answer explaining to barbie fans everywhere where life and plastic really exists. If you havent seen the new movie, we have a sort of not really spoiler alert. The barbies and kens all live in barbieland. You have to travel by car, boat, spaceship, snowmobile, bicycle, camper, van, neon roller blades, of course. The famed scientist tyson said that he figured out where barbieland really is. It is the florida keys. The pink didnt give it away . On social media he posted he bases his calculations primarily on the moons orientation and he says the existence of palm trees in relation to where the sun and moon rise and set over the ocean helped lead to this conclusion. You know the neighborhood next to that, who lives there . The simpsons. The golden girls. Thats right, the simpsons are in springfield. Also trending, one Southern California woman is celebrating her 104th birthday this week and shes sharing secrets to her healthy and long life. We want you to meet betsy elliot. She was born in pennsylvania, lived in many other places across the country, settling here on the west coast. She says that she actually stayed for the weather. You can stay for a lot of other reasons, but weather is a draw. You know what . Now shes a proud nana of three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, whom she points out are growing up in much different towns. Cigarettes for 15 cents a pack, a hot dog was 15 cents. You could get a bottle of beer for 15 cents. You could have a big time for a buck. [ laughter ] take me back. I hope her grandchildren are not buying cigarettes. As for her secret to this long life, for one thing, she doesnt have a sweet tooth and she doesnt overeat. Pull back, marcus. I really think its safe to say that her active lifestyle is a big factor because she had senior aerobics for 25 years, and in her 90s she turned to line dancing. To the left. Motion, staying in motion. Back it up now. Go, betsy. Since she doesnt have a sweet tooth, did she eat any of that birthday cake, or do you every now and then be, like, you know what, im going to celebrate today . When is she going to cut loose. She was just talking about cigarettes, hot dogs and beer. Shes on brand. Stayed for the weather. Its looking pretty great today. Its been nice to have a cooldown for the inland valleys, even though its still warm. But its not nearly as hot as it is elsewhere and we have higher humidity this morning. Take a look at whats happening to our south. Theres a surge of monsoon moisture and an area of low pressure spinning off the coast thats bringing rain to spots in the Central Coast and even some lightning offshore. Here in the bay area, so far its been dry. Were kind of watching the south county area very closely to see if any of that rain comes in in the next few hours. After that, it clears out. Were headed for mild temperatures today. Great day for a hike and staying active. Were going to see temperatures at noon headed for the mid70s in the east bay, and then turning mostly sunny as we reach into the low 80s for the afternoon. For the south bay, its going to reach into the mid to upper 80s this afternoon, with cupertino looking at a high of 86 degrees. For much of the east bay, were in the low to mid80s and then vallejo reaching 75, and then hayward reaching 76 degrees. So mild along the inner bay, with redwood city reaching 80 degrees, and for San Francisco its about the same as weve seen throughout much of the week. Breezy, cloudy to start, and then peeks of sunshine. For the north bay were seeing temperatures ranging from 60s to low 90s, the farther inland you go its going to be much hotter. As we take a look at fairfield, what to expect over these next several days, weve been talking a lot about it heating up. This is whats ahead. Were going back to the 90s, even upper 90s for early next week. So our inland temperatures are going from 80s to 90s, and were going to stay there for a while. It does look like well have at least a stretch of four or five days of temperatures at least into the mid to upper 90s in some spots, while San Francisco will see temperatures in the 60s and low 70s next week. Mike, how is it looking for the san mateo bridge . We had a disabled vehicle, the traffic break and one crew looked like they were moving slowly across the westbound direction. The Speed Sensors stayed at green. West 580, we do have perhaps another disabled vehicle or a minor crash. It looks like things are starting to sort out on the report and no sensors slowing there. A couple of other smaller crashes, but i do want to go over to highway 84, overnight road work around the tunnel that may still be going on. The schedule is to clear up. Ill watch it for you. Back to you. Well, as we head to break, a reminder that here at nbc bay area we are getting ready to clear the shelters.
