Jane doe was in sixth grade when her life began spiraling out of control. She said it all started with a teacher. I was very good friends with his cousin. So it gave us the opportunity for him to interact with us outside of school. We had a favorite beach we would go to. Thats where things kind of progressed from there. In sixth grade i was 11 and 12, and i believe he was about 14 years older than me. There was touching, kissing that led all the way up to everything. Everything was on the table. Reporter she says the abuse went on for years, until she was 17 and started life after high school. Now she looks back and is haunted. I was 12. What do i know about sex and feelings . I lost my childhood. It molded me for what i was the rest of my life. Reporter jane is among the thousands of californians now suing the Catholic Church over child sex abuse claims, a recent law opened a threeyear window for victims to file new civil claims regardless of when the alleged abuse happened. Jane cant publicly name the teacher in her lawsuit until a judge signs off. The Investigative Unit is not identifying him. But he is still alive and recently retired from a long teaching career at a south bay catholic prep school. I want him to know what he did to me was wrong. Our on going investigation has focused primarily on new abuse claims against catholic priests, but other lay church employees now face accusations as well. There are many that involves teachers, coaches, counselors, cud towedians. More than 600 plaintiffs are currently suing the Catholic Church in california including jane. Each case is different, he says. The suffering is similar. What you see is this vicious cycle of trauma after trauma after trauma. The common emotion they all seem to feel is wanting to numb the pain. That form of pain could come in the form of depression, anxiety, not trusting people, not being able to socialize, not being able to keep relationships. Whatever it may be, theyve all suffered tremendous pain. Reporter jane is no exception. She had a successful nursing career and raised two children by herself. But she suffered in silence for decades, she says, and tried numbing the pain in all the wrong ways. I turned to drugs, alcohol, a lot of promiscuity, addictive behavior, shopping. My life has been a struggle ever since then. Reporter now its a different kind of pain. Physical pain, jane says, thats leading her to confront her past head on. After going to the hospital for shortness of breath last year, she went into sepsis and then a coma. Something happened with my spine. They had to go in and clean it up. I woke up several months later as a quadriplegic. Its caused me to evaluate my purpose here and what ive been through as a child. Reporter jane is sober now and working towards walking again. Shes also been going to therapy, finding new purpose in speaking up for herself, and for the countless other victims she says she knows are out there. Its taken me 50 years to figure out how to handle it. Here i am today. Im still alive and im sitting in front of a camera talking to you. Im hoping that my voice can help others have a voice, also. The archdiocese of San Francisco ran jane does school during the time of her alleged abuse. In a statement they told us it will handle all these claims through the appropriate legal channels. Reporter the city is putting a threeyear contract on the table with raises of 5 for the first year, then 4 and 3 . The mayor contends to offer more the city would have to cut other programs.
