everyone. i'm raj mathai alongside janelle wang. you're looking live at levi's stadium, and yes, we have fans in the house. and we're counting down to sunday night football here on nbc. the 49ers and the green bay packers. >> 49ers in primetime right here on nbc bay area. kickoff in just a couple hours from now. the gates are just opening, and the fans are just arriving. this is thrilling, the first time since january of 2020 that fans have been here for a regular season game. >> i'm feeling good. >> i'm feeling great. >> we were here last year doing the show with no one here. it was eerie. >> we could hear the players on the field, that's how quiet it was. now, 60,000 plus fans are going to be filing inside here. >> you know where the 60,000 fans are? >> outside right now tailgating. >> right now, the players still in the locker room. you see some of the green bay packers taking the field. but outside in the parking lot, that's where the party is. this is such a great tradition. our stadium, candlestick park, to levi's stadium, and it's great. the 49ers know how do it, a lot of tailgating, eating, and drinking. >> they have been here for hours. when i was pulling in at 1:00, the line to get in was so long, it was backed up all the way to 101, and fans are already here when i arrived. thousands of fans already here. they're so excited. >> kickoff is at 5:20, but we have our pregame coverage followed by nightly news and mike tirico in the gang will take over. we have a lot going on. when the players take the field, they're going to look new, but they're going to look old. you know where i'm going? >> old school. >> old school uniforms. the niners are wearing their throwback jerseys back to 1994 when they last won the super bowl. who were some of your favorite players. >> steve young, jerry rice. >> ricky watters talking about the old school jerseys. >> when they look at the '9449ers team, they talk about style and swagger and attitude and all that, because that is what we were all about. when we had those uniforms, when they were first in, we were like, you know what? that matches us. that is what we're supposed to wear. >> i personally think those need to be the standard uniform for the 49ers. those things are just simply an awesome combination. not only great history, but they really are timeless in that respect. >> cool to see burton hanks, your favorite, ricky watters, even jerry rice in there. now when players take the field 15, 20 minutes from now, you'll see them in the old school '94 jerseys. >> so nostalgic to see them. one of my favorite players. that neck. all-time greatest player of all time. >> look at that, george kittle. okay, well the weather is great today. it's about 70 degrees, not too hot. it's fall. and it feels like it. >> our first full weekend of fall. let's bring in nbc's vienna arana. she likes to have a good time. you should be out here with us. >> i agree. i think i'm going to pitch that for next year. i have to be in the elements to give you the forecast. janell, you're absolutely right. temperatures are in the 70s. the pregame is looking good. you might have also noticed a nice light breeze at the stadium. by the time kickoff rolls around, we're talking 71 degrees. and notice by halftime, we're going to dip into the 60s. if you are from california, this could be considered a little chilly. if you're visiting us from green bay, you don't need a sweater, but if you're in the green bay, you might. >> if you're visiting from green bay, they're going to come in a bathing suit. >> this is california sunshine right here. we love it. >> the niners are off to a really solid start. 2-0, but it's that part of the season, are they really good, are they super bowl good? how do we figure this out? we bring in one of the best analysts and a hall of fame coach, tony dungy, who breaks down the niners and how good they are. >> they're a running team that's built off the run game and play action, and even though they have lost their three top runners, they haven't abandoned their game plan. they do what they do, they create scenes in the defensive line, and they make you feel those seams and they let jimmy garoppolo attack with the passing game. so i love what they're doing on offense. defensively, it's swarm to the ball. john lynch come from the tampa bay buccaneers background, and he's got a lot of fast, athletic defenders. and i think they're going to get better as the season goes on. >> pretty cool to hear from tony dungy. talking about his own buccaneers background. he loves john lynch, the 49ers gm. >> like what he dez. hopefully the niners will be 3-0 after tonight. news headlines, of course, we have to cover. let's send it back to terry mcsweeney in the studio. hi, terry. >> don't have too much fun out there. we'll get back to you in a minute. first, a covid vaccine for children 5 to 11 years of age may be here soon. the question of days, not weeks, before pfizer submits data to get fda approval. that's the latest from pfizer's ceo. his company released data showing the vaccine is safe and effective in children. that said, that study has not been peer reviewed. dose given to children would be one third of what adults are given. >> and a message to the unvaccinated, u.s. health officials say there is plenty of vaccine supply available. more than 40 million doses of the vaccine available right now. the u.s. is expecting a spike in demand with the booster shot rollout. a big deadline looms for college students and staff across the state, starting thursday. the csu system is requiring all students, faculty, and staff to be fully vaccinated for in-person learning. policy follows similar ones at campuses across the country, including the uc system. >> a rally to stop evictions in san francisco today, days before the state eviction moratorium expires. the caravan left marin street this afternoon, headed to a rally in garfield square. they're calling on congress to reinstate a moratorium on evictions with so many people still struggling during the pandemic. >> california's moratorium expired in four days at the end of september. we want to show there are people out there who do care, people who are fighting for tenants. >> activists are urging people to look into what help might be available. the state is offering a rental relief program. bay area events getting back to baz. the san mateo county set this w a software conference. the bay area's largest in-person conference since the pandemic. more than 5,000 people expected to show up. going to be different, of course. attendees must show proof of vaccination and submit a negative covid test within three dayoffs the conference, which will run tomorrow through wednesday. also going to look different this year in that all meetings and presentations are going to be outside. we're going to find out tomorrow if warriors star andrew wiggins will get the vaccine, and this is a big deal. on friday, the nba denied his request for a religious exemption. and that means he will not be able to play for the warriors at their home games until he fulfills san francisco's vaccination requirements, and those require all warriors to be vaxed to play at chase center. visiting players are exempt. tomorrow is warriors media where wiggins will be asked about his hesitancy to get the vaccine. let's get back out to levi's stadium. you're getting paid for a day off, not a bad gig. >> i sense a little jealousy from terry. >> he's been watching from the comfort of the studio, terry. >> he's a lifelong 49ers fan. we get it, terry. the team is off to a great start, 2-0. we talked about that. there is a major problem here. every team has problems. the 49ers certainly do. >> their running game, they have been riddled with injuries. there could be some people back in tonight. >> let's see if you could run the ball which would be great. >> i can't fill in, so hopefully players will be back. let's check in with anthony flores down there on the field with an update. >> we can see you. take it away. >> yeah, guys. i tell you what, it's shaping up to be an exciting night of football at levi's stadium. you can see some of the packers players on the field. i don't see any 49ers just yet. a big key for the niners to victory is to be able to run the football. the problem since the start of the season, their top four running backs have all been hurt. raheem mostert is done for the season. jamel hasty was added because of ankle. elijah hurt his shoulder last week. he's listed as doubtful for the game. we won't know until 90 minutes before kickoff if he's going to play. trey sermon is expected to start, a golden opportunity for him. the problem, he's had only one carry this season. that came last week. he got a concussion on the play. he has since cleared protocol, and he is ready to go. the niners have made some moves, and i have to get my list out here to make sure i know everyone. they elevated kerryon johnson from the practice squad. he played with detroit. they signed jacquizz patrick. he's big and you'll notice him. they also had trenton cannon who was cut from the ravens. he has three carries on the season. one thing coach shan aman might try to do to mix it up is run a few more jet sweeps to deebo samuel, and may put trey lance in to run the football. we know the key to keeping aaron rodgers off the field is that time of possession, and the way you do that is being able to run the football. guys, back to you. >> okay, and he just brought up a very interesting point. we didn't see trey lance in the last game. we could be seeing the rookie quarterback in this game. we'll check in with him throughout the pregame and post game. >> we want to go to marion favro who is in the traffic we were stuck in. fans getting into levi's stadium. she's made it. she's now surrounded by thousands of tailgaters. what's on the menu down there? >> well, i gotta tell you, it was worth the wait. there's so much excitement out here. look at this spread. i mean, i love these people. they're called the tailgating family. a lot are from vacaville. they start with dessert first, and chef rob tells me later he's going to be cooking up some flank steak. look at all this food. so gourmet, and they even have people serving drinks personally. you just ran out on your tray. >> i'm about to do it. >> you better come back for that. people are having such a blast. i do have to tell you that it took me two and a half hours -- [ cheering ] >> in the sea of red. i see some cheeseheads as well. >> i do, too. >> it took a lot of time to get in because we're not used to this. two seasons since the fans came in, but this is classic tailgating. >> the last time fans were here, the niners faced the packers. january 19th, 2020, nfc championship. it's like a rematch. we killed them in that game. but hopefully we will do the same at this game tonight. >> i smelled a lot of carne asada when i walked in as well. we're counting down to kickoff here on nbc bay area. the 49ers and green bay packers. stay with us. you see the packers now on the field. we're back in a moment. welcome back to nbc bay area. we're counting down to kickoff. guess who has arrived for duty. >> the enemy. >> aaron rodgers, the packers quarterback. he'll be going to the hall of fame. he grew up in the redding, chico area. went to cal. always back here. always wanted to be a 49er. >> i still consider him a california boy, but he's been with green bay so long, the rivalry is back on. green bay packers and the niners, welcome back. the fans are so excited. the first time back since the pandemic hit. and they are outside the gates are officially going to open in just a couple minutes from now. the players are starting to take the field. the packers are on the field, the niners will come out. man, they're so excited. they're rocking. they have been rocking it for hours. a lot of music out there. the dj is going to be pumping in here, but they're already rocking out there. >> we're going mariachi style. we like it. we talk about the fans and the energy, but really it's the players who love it even more. here's jimmy g. >> yeah, we -- it's been a while since the packers were the last time actually with a crowd here. it's kind of coming full circle now. it will be exciting getting the faithful back in the stands. can't wait to get all of them screaming. going to be a fun atmosphere. >> it is already a fun atmosphere. about 70,000 fans coming in. >> he loves the fans and the fans do love him. >> we talked about it just a few minutes ago with anthony flores. a fw chance we'll see trey lance tonight. really is that question, jimmy g., trey lance, what are we going to see? we checked in with another 49ers star, vernon davis. vernon's electrifying moments for the 49ers. had his career here, also played in denver and washington. we asked him as a pass catching tight end that was so talented, what would you chat with with jimmy g. and how to keep off that buzz and talk about the emerging trey lance. >> i think everyone should do their job and do what they're told. you know what i mean? of course, you bring a younger guy in behind a veteran, the veteran, okay, i got this young guy behind me, but i think jimmy g. being a wise veteran, he should just take in the energy and play his game. at the end of the day, if you're playing your game and doing the best you can do, it's going to show. no one can cheat hard work and dedication. >> that guy does not age. >> 37 years old. always been interesting with vernon because he's always kind of that cerebral, not your stereo typical football player. this was ten years ago. he said come to my house. let me tell you what i do when i don't play football. he paints. >> very talented in many ways. >> now he's an actor. he's done a couple movies with bruce willis and luke wilson. look for vernon davis on the big screen at some point. >> and he did "dancing with the stars." does it all. multitalented. he's so personable and great to see vernon davis. >> well, the weather is beautiful. it's about 70, 71 degrees. they have just officially opened the gates. the fans are starting to file in. vianey, how is our gameday forecast and our weather in the bay area? >> it's looking good for today. perfect football weather. not too hot, not too cold. we're in the 70s. beautiful view, so let's get to the forecast. as you mentioned, they just opened the gates. we're in the 70s. around 5:20, in the low 70s. by halftime, dipping down to the mid and upper 60s, but by the end of the game, low 60s. i hope everybody came prepared. if you're wondering about the air quality, there is an air quality advisory in effect through tomorrow, but the good news is right now, air quality is looking good. we have the green sensors here down through santa clara county, which is of course, where the stadium is located. throughout the entire bay area. so what are we expecting heading into the week ahead? we are monitoring an unsettled weather pattern that's going to dip down, tomorrow, bringing us rain chances for the north and also those cooler temperatures are expected to remain, topping out only in the 70s for tomorrow, up through napa. 72, san jose. 73, concord. 77. let's take a look at what we're pexthing. storm ranger, mobile doppler radar scanning. as soon as the system pushes its way in, we're also expecting winds to kick up. the hour-by-hour outlook shows the rain making its approach to areas prime another north of the golden gate bridge. we could see drizzle and spotty showers through the peninsula, even through santa cruz and into the south bay. the winds will be gusty, 15, 20, possibly 30 to 40 in higher elevation areas. at least the humidity will be high so it keeps some of the fire concerns low. for now, enjoying more fall-like area in the bay area for the next couple days and rain finally. back to you. >> like the sound of rain. and it is a little breezy today. perfect for a 49ers game. >> we're going to come right back as the 49ers and packers getting ready. they're taking the field, and the fans are now coming in here to levi's stadium. stay with us as we count down to sunday night football. welcome back to sunday of bill walsh, and bill walsh sketching out the play, the catch, i should say, almost 40 years ago. joe montana to dwight clark in the corner of the end zone. >> we remember them so fondly and they're missed dearly every time we're here at the niners game, we think about both of them. a very special shirt. okay, let's go live to the field right now, where the green bay packers are on the field.
