Whats the status of vaccines for children under five reporter lester, the testing is underway. Pfizer says they hope to have the results by The End of the year, and they couldnt come soon enough. But most female government employees are also being told to stay home for the same reason. Richard joining me here in the Studio President biden will speak before the Un Tomorrow he will likely defend u. S. Handling in afghanistan. What are your thoughts . Good to be here, first of all. But this is a big speech his credibility is on the line because so far he hasnt really acknowledged any mistakes he said that everything, more or less, went according to plan. Maybe it got a little messy toward The End much of the world thought very differently. They saw a chaotic withdrawal that empowered the taliban. And created instability in Central Asia will he acknowledge any of that . Richard, thank you. Great to have you back, at least for a little bit. More on the withdrawal in afghanistan tomorrow on today. Savannah guthrie discusses it with british prime minister boris johnson. Up next tonight, a volcano explodes for the first time in half a century we will look at its destructive path every single day, were all getting a little bit better. Were better cooks. There is a state of Emergency Tonight on the Spanish Resort island of La Palma where a volcano has erupted for the first time in 50 years. Thousands forced to evacuate as the lava destroyed about 100 homes. Though there have been no reports of injuries or deaths. After the hottest summer in the u. S. On record, the biden administration unveiled a new effort to protect americans from a silent killer, extreme heat and it can be especially dangerous in neighborhoods that have become known as urban Heat Islands. Morgan radford explains in our series climate challenge. From the moment her day begins describe the heat. What does it feel like well, i wipe the sweat off. Im melting. Reporter Annie Moore has to fight the heat. Get out about 7 00 before it really heats up about 10 00, 10 30. Reporter so you have to plan your day around the heat i do. Reporter shes now one of 100 volunteers. This reads the temperature and you watch the Temperature App on your phone. Reporter working on a project called urban Heat Atl volunteers using special technology to map atlantas temperature, block by block. Reporter what type of neighborhood are we in right now. We are in a predominantly black Neighborhood Reporter how hot is it here its about 92 Degrees Fahrenheit Reporter the goal to prove some neighborhoods are hotter than others. New research shows that more than 70 of u. S. Counties, lowincome nonwhite neighborhoods experience more extreme Surface Heat than their wealthier, whiter counterparts the reason urban Heat Island unshaded asphalt areas that amplify heat. We see that black and brown neighborhoods are simply hotter or feel hotter than white ones why is that . Yeah. The lack of Green Space, lack of parks, perhaps the lack of trees. And that sort of critical natural infrastructure are the things that help us to cool our community. Reporter so what does the solution look like when all this is said and done we hope that Government Officials will respond to our data we want to see more well maintained parks, Green Space and trees in communities of color. Reporter changes that cant come soon enough for annie. I think we need to really rethink how do we keep the earth cool now it is time for us to fix it. Reporter working to fix a global problem one step at a time morgan radford, Nbc News atlanta. And up next, as we continue tonight, my exclusive interview with the crew of Inspiration Space Mission and what they said about sleeping in space during that threeday trip. If you look at the sky tonight, you can likely catch a glimpse of the Harvest Moon at its peak the large orange colored Full Moon occurs closest to the equinox heralding the arrival of fall on wednesday. Those scenes surpassed by the views from space for the four civilian astronauts who orbited the earth and touched down this weekend. I got a chance to speak with them in florida for an exclusive interview. Inspiration 4, welcome home to planet earth. Thanks so much, spacex it was a heck of a Ride Reporter a heck of a ride and a heck of an accomplishment for the civilian astronauts of inspiration 4. Show of hands, who would still rather be up there really were you a little disappointed when it was time to come home. It was definitely mixed emotions that last view of the earth made me emotional because it was so awe inspiring and i will be thinking about that for the rest of my life. Ill ask you this question because you are not professional astronauts was it scary thats a question a lot of people want to know. I mean, we were trained so well we were not scared in the least. I know we had plenty of people on the ground, our Loved Ones who were watching us and supporting us. Were so relieved and so excited and so happy to celebrate when we splashed down. The Splash Down Capping off a success threeday mission. The Crew Gathering data, collecting images of earth and getting to experience the daily rituals of Human Life in a way only a handful of others have. Does anybody really sleep up there . I mean really sleep. I slept great in space. Really . I slept better in space than i did last night on earth. You are floating and it is so comfortable. Where could this be taken, this whole idea of putting nonprofessional astronauts in space . We know so little about our universe were just a spec in The Grand Scheme of things and i think there is questions that people have been asking themselves since the beginning of human kind, and i think the answers are out there and we have to go and find them for dr. Proctor, The First Black Woman to pilot a spacecraft, a once deferred dream has been realized. It is not lost on any of us that you wanted to be an astronaut for a very long time. You applied at nasa, got into the finals at one point but didnt make it how sweet is it . Okay, obviously very sweet. Yes, it is. And, so, its just amazing. This is the best way that i could ever imagine going to space. Reporter while Haley Cant wait to share her experience with the kids at st. Judes, the place she was once treated for Bone Cancer where she now treats young patients herself. Im excited to get back to st. Judes. I want to tell all these kids that if i can do this, they can do this. The highlight for the Flight Commander was news he learned when he reached the ground, that they had surpassed their 200 Million fundraising goal. Knowing that the bigger mission of reaching out and inspiring a lot of people to contribute to a real cause here on earth that was important to us with st. Jude and then exceeding it was a powerful moment for a lot of us. Mission accomplished we have a lot of problems down here but, haley, how do we look from up there as a planet beautiful and just so united thats one thing that i really took away from seeing the earth, is it was just one.
