Been kind of focusing my attention in this direction because were constantly hearing these falling limbs and the possibility that were talking about weakened trees that could fall down any second. This is a dangerous fire. It has shown its ability to be unpredictable. Reporter today the only predictable thing youll find in south Lake Tahoe, this Communitys Gratitude for our firefighters. And what better way than to show that appreciation than by obeying Cal Fires evacuation order. Cal fires captain says those who live just outside south Lake Tahoe in the Christmas Valley area also did an excellent job of fireproofing their homes. A lot of prep work was done ahead of time, and a lot of good work by the people who own these homes and come to maintain these areas. They know that they live in fire country. Reporter typically homeowners forced to evacuate leave their sprinklers on. But this homeowner took it one step further. To protect their home, you can see they completely covered it from the roof to the ground in this fire resistant material. This is a dangerous fire. It has shown its ability to be unpredictable and has harmed several firefighters and two private citizens as well. Reporter Cal Fire says one other firefighter suffered burns and had to be hospitalized. Until the red Flag Warning is lifted tomorrow at 11 00 p. M. , captain wade says theres no way to predict where the Caldor Fire will go next. I wish i could accurately forecast when tahoe will be back to normal. Reporter and back out here live were seeing a couple of small fires, smoke coming out in that distance. And that has been really the challenge for these firefighters. I mean, all day long ive seen them play a game of whackamole, if you will, with these small spot fires because you just dont know when the winds will pick up. And those flying embers can really push the Caldor Fire in a different unpredictable direction. But, again, really the fight continues here. We wont know when exactly calfire is going to be able to rein in the fire until the red flag is over wednesday at 11 00 p. M. Right now its just fingers crossed that the wind conditions are going to be a lot more favorable than they were last night. Thats the latest in the community of meyer. Certainly a lot of challenges ahead. Thank you, melissa. There is a victory in the fight against the Caldor Fire, at least one. These are pictures of echo summit lodge, flames burned to and around the building, but theres the lodge not damaged. Lets bring in jeff raniere. Jeff, we heard melissa talk about the challenges that lie ahead. Lets talk about that wind and the direction it could push this fire. We saw in melissas live shot it was extremely gusty behind her. Sustain pd winds arent that bad right now. Were seeing them about 5 to 10milesperhour. But its the gusts within the Fire Zone. Thats where were getting at times these 20 to 50mileperhour gusts. So, we are looking at that Wind Range Tonight also through tomorrow now, we did get help on the weather today, cooler 70s on the Fire Line and tomorrow dropping off more to 72. Its been active on this eastern flank of the fire. Lets get a closer view. As we talked about such a phenomenal fight by these firefighters. The way the Wind Direction is going, its pushing smoke and embers toward the Lake Tahoe airport. That is the next zone that could get hit by this and it is only four miles away from south Lake Tahoe. It did burn through part of myers, as was expected last night. So, thankfully people did heed those evacuation warnings. Just an incredible effort by those firefighters to be able to stop some of that forward progress through earlier today. The red Flag Fire Warning is in effect until 11 00 p. M. Tomorrow, not only the Caldor Fire but the dixie and Antelope Fire all in that for those gusty winds. Back with the Cooler Bay Area forecast in about ten minutes. Thank you, jeff. Its a different story here in the Bay Area. Lets go outside. The air here seems to be improving a bit. Its in the good to moderate range on the air quality index. Of course were going to continue our reporting online. Just go to nbcbayarea. Com. We have an interactive map of the evacuation zones, which you need to know if you are evacuated. Youll find that link on the trending bar on our home page. Well, after months of delays, the much anticipated trial of Elizabeth Holmes began in San Jose today. Holmes dropped out of stanford, started her dpaen and was hailed a Silicon Valley Rock star. At one point the company was valued at 9 billion. But that was before authorities moved in, shut it down, accused her of defrauding investors and patients. Scott budman joins us from outside the courtroom. Scott . Reporter Jessica Holmes is accused of defrauding for hundreds of millions of dollars and putting patients in matter because the Blood Testing machines simply didnt work. Let me show you the crush of media that met holmes. Holmes did not comment on her way into court, nor did she speak inside court. Today, instead, was about questioning potential jurors. They were asked about how much they knew about Elizabeth Holmes. Had they seen documentaries, did they read the book bad blood by john kerry. The jurors were asked about any experience they may have had with domestic abuse. Holmes says she was abused by exboyfriend and former their knows executive. Also complicated Jury Selection, so many people having vacation plans they put off because of covid. And this case is expected to last about three months. Now, at 7 00 tonight were going to go into the surprising role that vaccinations actually is playing in Jury Selection. For now we are live outside port in San Jose. Jessica, ill send it back to you. Scott, lets talk about Jury Selection because E Liz Death holmes is very well known. Theres been a documentary. She is a familiar figure. How hard is it going to be to get jurors . Did any of them say they recognize her or know her . Reporter yeah, a lot of people did. They said they knew of her and know of theranos. Some even admitting to a little bit of bias towards holmes because of the articles they read and documentaries they saw. And the judge and the lawyer had to say, but can you at least give her a fair trial. And most people said yes. Well see. The Jury Pool started this morning at about 200. It was widdled down all day, but they have a lot more wid lg down to do. As we mentioned scott is going to join Raj Tonight at 7 00. The two will talk about how vaccinations played a role deciding who will and not make it on the jury. Raj will have that conversation for you on nbc Bay Area news tonight. Weeks before voters decide whether to recall him, Governor Newsom made a big covid announce. The governor announcing 80 of all eligible californians have gotten at least one dose of the covid vaccine. He also said more needs to be done to reach out to the last holdouts, including many in communities of color. Newsom said the community is looking at better ways to reach people in rural counties, which are also lagging. Hes hoping smaller grassroots efforts will be the key. What about vaccination rates in other counties, Santa Clara county, 87 of the population has received one dose. In San Francisco, that number is 78 . And in contra costa county, 84 of people have received at least one shot. Now, another good sign, the State Positivity Rate has dropped to 4. 6 . Just a few weeks ago, we were sitting at 7 . Now, what about cases in your childs school. Weve been tracking those too. You can find your School District for your child at nbcbayarea. Com and see how many cases are in that district. It is unanimous. Today Santa Clara Countys Board of supervisors issued a vote of no confidence, urging long time sheriff Lori Smith to retire. Senior investigator Steven Sa Cass has been covering issues involving the sheriff for years now. Absolutely, jessica. Just two weeks ago San Joses mayor urged Sheriff Smith to resign. Now in an unprecedented move, this is the document they voted on. The supervisors unanimously voted to issue no Confidence Vote and urged her to retire when her latest term is up at the end of 2022. Reporter from this beating of a Police Informant at the Elm Wood Jail by 31 fellow inmates to the Beating Death of mentally ill inmate Michael Tyree at the hands of three deputies, plus the beatings of other inmates over the year, to the grand jury indictments of two top officials on Bribery And Conspiracy charges as part of a pay to play scheme involving concealed carry weapons permits. All of it cited by county supervisors as reasons to ask for a vote of no confidence. From my perspective, what we are looking to do with this vote of no confidence is very carefully and meticulously lay out dozens of statements that simply reflect behaviors and actions of the Sheriffs Office over the last number of years. When we learn about a beating in the jail six months after the fact by watching Television Footage on the news, it seems to me we cannot help but conclude that we dont have confidence in the administration of the sheriffs department. In his remarks during the nearly 90minute discussion around what he acknowledged was an unusual and undented move, he said the board can no longer stay silent. The gun permits, the ticket scandal, the beating, the settlements all compel us to say we have no confidence. Youve laughed at my attempts to ask for more staff, and when we cant perform the functions, you blame. Sheriff smith responded by lashing out saying the board had ignored the mentally ill and not funded appropriate programs. Im again asking for an investigation. A lot has been said, a lot is being said by the committee. Reporter the sheriff attacked the councilman and accusing him of bullying her. I will withstand your coordinated wrath especially when impartial entities will investigate your spurious allegations. Supervisor Otto Lee issued a last Minute Resolution exhorting Sheriff Smith to retire when her term is up in 2022 and asking her to start a plan for her success within the next 60 days. That passed unanimously too. The sheriff never directly responded to that request, other than to say it was a surprise. Calling it outrageous and false and misleading allegations. This isnt the last weve heard of all this. Well stay on this story. That is for sure. Thank you very much steven. Still ahead, doctors and nurses in one Bay Area county, what theyre asking to do now that every bed in the county is filled with covid patients. Plus once you open your heart and see the people and empathize with what theyre going through, its impossible to look away. I could not possibly leave him there without trying to help. From a homeless stranger to now a longtime neighbor. How one act of kindness turned into a friendship. And temperatures are starting to drop, and take a look at it. The fog is beginning to return. Well show you how much well have tomorrow morning. Im back with that in about six minutes. An urgent plea from doctors in Mendocino County for patients to get vaccinated. They say their emergency departments are just overflowing. Their icus are full and patients are waiting for beds. The doctors say as the Delta Variant spreads, covid19 hospitalizations in Mendocino County are increasing and straining resources. Doctors and nurses are at the brink of exhaustion 18 months into this pandemic. And that misinformation about the vaccine is making it worse. They say getting vaccinated will protect you, your loved ones, your community and them as well. A truly incredible act of generosity and compassion. The man responsible for it says hes no angel, just someone who opens his eyes to those suffering around him. The story begins in 2019 when scott, a retiree from Rhode Island came to spend a few weeks with his son living in Palo Alto. Scott had just read a book by the Dalai Lama that suched him deeply and he wanted to put the things into practice. He thought it might change his life. Well, it did. Not just his though. It was on University Avenue in Palo Alto in may of 2019 that scott kuz mar ski decided to try a little experiment in human decency. My plan was just to im going to do something i would never do. Im going to engage the people experiencing homelessness. Im just going to hand them water and see what happens. Reporter scott says his first interactions with the homeless were pleasant but generally fleeting, until, that is, this one Encounter Right in the middle of the street. And i see this guy obviously with distress in some way but smiling ear to ear riding down the bike with all the stuff in there. And he pulls into this coffee shop. And i said ive got to meet this guy. Reporter so, scott invites the guy, robert, to get coffee with him. Robert had been homeless for close to 30 years. While he generally didnt trust strangers, there was something about scott that he connected with. And the feeling was mutual. Really formed a bond. Palo alto on tuesday morning, 7 00 a. M. Waiting for robert. Reporter they met for breakfast every day for weeks. They shared their life experiences, scott even sleeping on the street one night with robert, robert getting to stay in a nice hotel another. Most importantly though scott connected robert with services and medication that got him in a place where he was ready for housing. But where . Once you open up your heart and you see the people and empathize with what theyre going through, its impossible to look away. I could not possibly leave him there without trying to help. Reporter so, scott found a small cabin a few miles from his home in Rhode Island and bought it for robert. Robert left his bike and all his baggage behind and flew east. Scott saved my life. Dont ever give up because you never know who youre going to meet. You never know whos on your side, in your corner. And thats pretty thats pretty big, you know . Reporter the pair are now best friends, seeing each other a few times a week, each thanking the other one for changing his life. Scott says his compassion was just part of the reason for roberts success. He said the right medication that made everything possible. In his case long acting injectable call ar sta da that helped robert control the schizophrenia that was keeping him on the streets. That is an incredible story. It literally sounds like something out of a movie. Exactly. They couldnt make a movie out of this before. Its remarkable he stuck with him and they both learned so much from each other. Thanks for sharing that. Lets check out our forecast now. You are following the fires. We have a red Flag Warning still in effect. Its going to be in effect for the next 24 hours . Thats in effect until 11 00 p. M. Tomorrow in the sierra. They are under gusty winds especially in the Fire Zone. Just in case you missed the earlier update, you can see the Caldor Fire did grow overnight. You saw about a 17,000 Acre Growth in the past 24 hour period. Sustained winds, thats your steady wind, not that bad, 10milesperhour right now. But gusts within the Fire Zone ranging 20 to 50milesperhour and we keep the same Wind Forecast through tomorrow. The fire overnight did burn through parts of meyers. It is approaching the Lake Tahoe airport. Firefighters are putting such an aggressive fight on this. If they didnt have as many people fighting it as last night, i think it would be more out of control. If you know any friends or family there that decided to stay, make sure you let them know about the latest information. Youll get more on this at nbcbayarea. Com.
