Debris and mudflows causing significant damage to homes and roads. Mud pushed up against the homes spilling over onto the street. Firefighters say at least two people were hurt and nearly 50 horses were rescued. Look at that sludge and mud and mess right there. The mudflow is from the river fire zone from last august. While the bay area escaped flooding and mudslides for now, many areas instead got snow. Jodi hernandez went to one spot that just last week was the site of a brush fire. Reporter parts of the bay area look more like the sierra today after the storm delivered a good dose of snow. Its been crazy weather lately, right . Reporter ashley and Payton Wilcox spent the morning playing in the snow. As Mother Nature brought yet another surprise to parts of the bay area. Its been interesting definitely this year. Reporter just last week a brush fire broke out in the same area of geyserville after windy weather knocked down a powerline. From fire to ice here in the span of a week. We thought all the crazy stuff was supposed to happen and be done in 2020. It certainly has continued over. If there was any way for me to predict or explain, i would be in a different line of work. Reporter the mayor of calistoga says we have been on quite the weather ride this year. He is grateful last nights storm did not produce the flooding and mudslides many feared, but says its not time quite yet to let your guard down. People woke up this morning relieve the because we were anticipating pretty difficult situations, so we are taking a breath right now and then preparing for the next one and go from there. Com. Evacuation for some areas of the czu fire zone are being extended. Here is a look at the current evacuations in the Santa Cruz Mountains and san mateo county. The areas in red are under a mandatory evacuation until tomorrow morning that. Whole region is getting hit with heavy rain. Because of the burn scar, there is a serious threat of mudslides and flooding like we are seeing down in salinas. Evacuation orders are in effect for about 5,000 people. This is for areas like ben lohman, brookdale and bolder creek. 250 households say they are staying put. We had food, everything else, just shelter in place. And the budget doesnt allow for hotels, et cetera. Hang tight and cover up there. Santa cruz county geologists are investigating possible slides off Jameson Creek and bolder creek. Sheriffs deputies have added patrols to prevent any looting at those evacuated homes. Scary moments for a family. A tree came crashing down on their roof and broke through. Melissa colorado is in union city for us with their story. Melissa. Reporter this large crack polled by a boom. I think you can guess around 9 30 p. M. The family who lives in this home tells me they heard a large crack followed by a big boom. I think you can guess what that was. This large tree thats right here in the familys front yard fell over on top of the roof. One of the tree limbs managed to pierce a hole through the roof. I want to show you some of the photos that the family shared with us. The family was a bit camera shy. You can see the entire tree fell on top of the familys roof. Under that roof, this is what the family saw. Bits of the tree piercing through the ceiling of a bedroom. The family says thats when rain started coming into the room and they had to use buckets to collect the water despite the hole in the roof, the family says they slept in in that bedroom anyway. You can see the family has placed that suction tube right there thats coming out of the bedroom window and that is going to suck out any water thats going to come through that leaky section of the roof. But the man who sleeps in that bedroom says he is feeling very lucky. This could have been a whole lot worse. He is really thankful the roof was able to take the brunt of that impact coming from that tree. Melissa colorado, nbc bay area news. Wow, thanks, melissa. I asked hi what he thought about the governors new order that you just talked about to get more vaccinators and he said, yes, its all hands on deck now. Dentists, emts in the Emergency Personnel area, nursing students, pharmacists and pharmacy students, medical assistants with supervision. So i think, you know, everybody onboard. We need lots of people to give the vaccine. Realistically speaking, when should people anticipate, like in santa clara county, that they are actually going to get a vaccine . When will we all be vaccinated . I dont know. Were hoping by summer, late summer that we will have everyone vaccinated. That could change. Lets talk about the phone bank. Tell me a little bit about how thats going to function and what are the most common questions that people want to know the answers to . There are a number of people standing by that we train that can answer questions and then direct people again to where they can get more information online. Also, tried to get people some additional help in signing up or getting their appointments or directing them to how they sign up to getting their appointments. I guess one of the most important or common questions we are seeing asked is, you know, when is it my turn . So there you go. They are ready to help you. Its happening right now. You can call the number on your screen. We have people there that are trained to give you the answers in both english and spanish. They have it for you. Now, the doctor says he doesnt have a crystal ball, but he says we have to have stamina here because he thinks its going to be six to nine months before were vaccinated and even before we can consider taking off our masks. However, he says he feels more optimistic now than he has for a long time because he says now he feels that they are getting help from the feds or will be very soon, that is based on science, and all of a sudden he feels the veil lifting just a little bit. It looks like we can get june, july, or august according to dr. Marty in terms of when the general population will get the vaccines. Lets talk about the feds. President biden is also working to ramp up the vaccination rates. Lets break down the plan. Right now the u. S. Government is distributing vaccines to each state based on population. This week roughly 8. 6 million doses were sent out across the country. But President Biden says he is going to up that number. He hopes to be sending out 10 million doses per week starting next week. Now, once the state receives the vaccines, its up to them to send off to local Distribution Sites and hospitals. But a big complaint we have been hearing from california and county leaders, there doesnt seem to be enough supplies. So the white house has ordered another 100 million Pfizer Vaccines and another 100 million moderna vaccines. Those shipments should arrive by the end of the summer. Now, when they arrive the u. S. Will have received 600 million doses in total. That will be enough to vaccinate 300 Million People with two doses each. Thats over 90 of the u. S. Population. The Atmospheric River is swinging back towards the bay area and its hitting some areas harder than others. We are going to go over the rain timeline and our chance of thunderstorms and our next storm after this. I will have it for you in about eight minutes. And not just the bay area. Snow is also falling up in Northern California and down to the arizona desert, places like scottsdale. We will show you some of the highlights. Schools like lincoln, washington, and feinstein elementary. This is about race, politics, and money. Here is nbc bay areas lili tan. Reporter its a sign of the times. A bhoping 44 Public School names are now on the chopping block. And this is under reporter late tuesday the San Francisco school board voted to change the names of schools named after historical figures that critics contend engaged in some way with the enslavement or oppression of others. This is in response to a 2018 resolution passed which was in the wake of the charlottesville attacks. Reporter George Washington high is on the list because washington owned slaves. James Lick Middle School overlooked treatment of indigenous people. And local high wavered in his later years. Tremendous disappointment. Reporter gary graduated from lowell high in 1963 and opposes renaming his alma malter. If you look hard enough and back far enough, you are going to find something against everybody. Reporter mayor london breeze says she understands the significance in a name, but in a statement said, what i cannot under is why the school board is advancing a plan to have all these schools renamed by april when there isnt a plan to have our kids back in the classroom by then. School board president Gabriella Lopez says they can do both. We are committed to dismantling this work, this virus of racism alongside everything that we are doing to reopen schools. Reporter the school board estimates it will cost about 10,000 to rename each school, changing out signs like this one here at lowell high. Among the names proposed, maya angelou, michelle obama, or no names at all and using numbers instead. The school board says the plan is to raise money instead of using school funds. The pandemic is causing our region to get bigger. Its becoming a mega region with more people working from home, they are fleeing to cheaper housing, mostly in sacramento and the northern san joaquin valley. Thats increasing calls for a second tlans transbay rail crossing. Built in the 1960s, its a series of tunnel pieces linked under the San Francisco bay. A new report by the Bay Area Council Economic Institute predigts a second rail crossing would decrease car traffic, increase travel times and shrink greenhouse gases. No word where it would be located. Our microclimate weather alert tonight. Parts of 101 of closed in Mendocino County because cars and big rigs were left stranded. Trees were uprooted and powerlines snapped. You can see it hear. Falling right on to trucks and cars on the road. Caltrans says 101 is now closed just north of willits. There is no estimated time of reopening. So far, thankfully, no reports of any injuries. And its not just california getting snow. Look at this. This is arizona. Flagstaff gets snow. Also snow in scottsdale. Thats where baseball spring training is. Up to two feet of snow. The city is asking people to stay home there in flagstaff. Four hours south, tucsons Reid Park Zoo got snow. Those elephants. They are like, whats going on . What is this stuff . This is in it tucson. The baby elephants are like, i dig this. They are having a heck of a time rolling around in the snow, slipping and sliding in the mud. Would you bet on snow in las vegas . Sin city, after two years of no snow, enough yesterday for sledding and snow people. Cool to see areas that dont normally get snow getting snow. I won that bet, you guys. You said vegas . As we move through next week our storm system after this one could also bring 1,500 to 2,000 feet, more snow. We are not done with the chances just yet. We know the past 24 hours very serious with heavier rainfall. Lets start off the microclimate forecast with the rain totals. You can see just how much we picked up in about an 18hour period. Santa cruz mountains 3 to 4 inches. Really lucky there wasnt any major mudslides at least this morning. North coastal mountains 2 to 3 inches. Morgan hill 3 inches. This is one location im very concerned about tonight as that heavy rainfall continues. Santa rosa just over 1. 5 inches. San jose 0. 83 inch. We are going to be picking up a little bit more tonight and tomorrow. So Flash Flood Watch over the burn zones, the highest risk of those mudslides. And we have crews out and we will be watching that for you. Right now the Atmospheric River is boomeranging back towards us, getting us a second time. As you can see it lifting up over the south bay right now, and we also have this upper low pressure to the north thats going to bring some thunderstorm chances tomorrow. A lot happening on the weather map. On stormranger and mobile doppler radar, everything is centered towards the south bay right now with this small slice of the Atmospheric River coming back. Its at morguing hill and gilroy with heavier rain right now. Watch out for isolated streak flooding. We have seen 0. 75 inch in the past three hours and 24hour rain of 3 inches. Dont drive through standing water. Also our Flash Flood Warning in effect over the fire burn zones in the Santa Cruz Mountains until 6 30. This will likely be extended with the rain forecast tonight. And right here through the south bay you are on the edge of this, we are seeing some spotty showers. It will also start to pick up gradually here tonight. Look, the we are getting into this evening and tomorrow are these scattered areas of rain coming in with some instability. At 11 30 at night and nor at 5 00 a. M. Tomorrow with scattered thunderstorms, maybe even some small hail, and that would go through 1 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Even through 10 00 p. M. We are holding on to that chance of rain. Then by friday we will start to see this tick on out of here. Additional rainfall totals 0. 5 to 0. 75 inch. In the mountains could be in the 1 to 3inch range. A lot coming our way tonight and some. Scattered thunderstorms, isolated wind gusts, small halo snow to 2,000 feet. Okay. We get a break on friday. Saturday and sunday in San Francisco is dry and more rain monday and tuesday. I think we will be at about a 0. 25 inch to 2 inches for the bay area rain totals next monday and tuesday. This weekend north bay the best chance of spotty showers. Overall, friday through sunday we are in a break and then another round comes our way next week. So, thankfully, you guys, we have this break in between those storms coming our way. Its good.
