And who indicated a desire to come to washington last week. The official says agents talked them out of coming here. The u. S. Capitol police have not responded to our request for comment about all this. Were back with the debate over who gets vaccinated when and some backlash against a group at the front of the line in many states, prisoners. Many have already been vaccinated well before most of the general public. Steve patterson now with the arguments for and against. Reporter in americas correctional facilities, covid may have its highest form of freedom. You have people in lockup situations with very limited space, it obviously creates a situation where a prison or jail really becomes a petrie dish for the coronavirus to spread. Reporter the covid case rate is 5 1 2 times higher for incarcerated people compared to the general public. So far, more than 325,000 inmates have contracted the virus with nearly 75,000 Staff Members getting sick. Nearly 2,000 inmates have died. There was a considerable amount of fear. Reporter advocates say the inmates should be the first to receive a vaccine. When the state takes away your liberty and locks you up, the state has a responsibility to make sure that you dont die in their custody. Reporter forest baney was granted clemency in november after spending 19 months inside londons correctional institution. The terror felt when dozens started getting sick. Not just fear for ourselves. Fear or our families. Fear from the virus. Fear from how operations would change within the facilities, themselves. Reporter at least 15 states are in phase 1 of Vaccine Distribution at correctional facilities. But with a slow rollout and limited number of doses, others argue free lawabiding citizens should come first. The idea that my dad would be in a better position to get vaccinated if hed only committed a felony and been sentenced to prison, thats ridiculous. Reporter colorado District Attorney George Brauchler said he was enraged when the governor announced prisoners would be made a priority to receive the vaccine. This isnt a question of whether inmates should get vaccinated. They absolutely should. The question is where on that Prioritization List do they fall . And it must be after the 65 and older and immunocompromised population. Reporter colorado officials since clarified their position, moving the incarcerated further down.
