Taco tuesday. Look, im here for that, too. We can combine them, terrific taco tuesday. All right, well check the commute with mike in just a moment. Kari, how are we looking weatherwise . A cold one again . Yeah, its cold and its foggy, so were seeing the combination of two things well have to deal with heading out the door this morning. This is a live look outside in san jose and for the most part weve seen the visibility looking a little bit better near the ground level in the south bay but higher up weve seen some of those low clouds rolling by. We will see this clearing out for a mild day and theres still dry weather in the forecast, so well talk about that coming up. Mike, how is it looking as a lot of people deal with the foggy conditions for the commute . Well, kari, chp has two Traffic Alerts going on right now and one is near a foggy area over my shoulder. You see the yellow highlighting. Ive circled 121 which is closed for a crash up there in sonoma. No mention of fog in that crash report but still know it is there as kari is talking about around spots in the bay. The other Traffic Alert in brentwood on vasco road. Well talk about both of those. You see the green sensors dominate the bulk of our commute. Back to you, laura. Thank you very much, mike. There are now more than 150,000 confirmed cases of covid in the bay area. With more than 2,700 new infections just added. Around 800 of the newest infections are in Santa Clara County. Nearly 2,000 people have died. Bay area health leaders, some already bracing for even more critical cases. This as new steps are taken to add more restrictions, to help bring the numbers under control. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson is live for us in San Francisco where many hospital beds are already being filled. Reporter yes, good morning. As we continue to follow those numbers, that concern is exactly what you just mentioned, the number of hospital beds that are occupied. Right now in the state of california 75 of those icu beds are occupied, and the bay area its about 72 . But those numbers are pretty tame compared to what the Health Experts are predicting. Right now nearly 7,800 patients are hospitalized and governor gavin newsom says its increased by 67 in the past two weeks. The governor warned monday that without more restrictions the number of patients could double or triple in a month pushing the icu bed capacity into 112 by middecember. Thats statewide. 92 in the bay area by early january. So in an effort to slow the spread in some of the citys hardest hit communities, ucsf has opened Free Covid Testing sites. Again, at this time Governor Newsom says if those numbers do not slow down there will be more restrictive measures put in place to slow those numbers. Well keep you updated as that comes down from the state level. Were live in San Francisco, Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. Were all hoping for the slowing of those numbers. Late they are morning a panel of cdc experts will meet to determine who will receive the vaccines first. To today in the bays bob redell. Weve seen a lot of early reports and it seems the first in line will be the health care providers. Reporter correct, marcus. When the Advisory Committee on immunization practices meets later today, this is the cdc panel, we expect them to give priority to health care workers, doctors, nurses, other first responders, and people who live in places like Nursing Homes and longterm care facilities who are most vulnerable to catching covid19 and ending up in the icu. There are two vaccines in the pipeline, one from pfizer and its german partner bionntech and the other moderna. Both are expected to roll out within weeks for the first tier of people. It is expected the rest of us would be eligible late winter, early spring. An infectious epidemiology expert says the logistics for pulling off this mass vaccination is extremely complicated because of the low temps needed to store the doses. But believes our country can pull it off. When the shots are available he believes you would most likely go to your doctor. In some cases the local health department, two doses. Long term is to have the vaccine available at your local pharmacy. The trick is for us to not get infected and in the meantime overwhelm those hospitals and icus. And so thats the real message, while we take off this top little bit of people who have to be around to take care of the icu surge and who are most likely to die from this we need to tell everybody else to keep their mass be ks on and av crowding and mixing. Reporter coming up in a half hour, when we could achieve herd immunity and what it will take to achieve it. Reporting live, bob redell, today in the bay. Waiting and watching. Thank you, bob. New for you that morning have you ever found yourself spaced out while at work, maybe feeling a little bored . Microsoft has a new system that really measures your boredom. According to the new patent it would be called the Insight Computing system. The idea is to use cameras and software to look for signs of boredom and tiredness in employees. It would monitor time spent texting, checking emails and browsing the internet. Critics, of course, are calling it a little bit too big brother. It may help avoid scheduling nonproductive meetings. Look busy, friends. A lot of people say could this meeting have been an email . You hear that all the time. So now theyll now. Like a twoline email. Youre sitting there like this. Bored. Especially when im talking, marcus. What did you say . Youd better entertain us, kari. Take it away. All right. Hopefully i can deliver with this as we are talking about some cold weather and were starting out with those temperatures in some spots below freezing. If you want to know is this a record, thankfully its not because take a look at todays record in santa rosa. 23 degrees is todays record and 20 in napa. Weve seen some 30s in spots in the east bay as well as the south bay, even san joses record is pretty low. Im glad were not there yet. As we get a look at our visibility this shows you how far you can see in miles. Only a quarter mile visibility in santa rosa and San Francisco. Getting a little bit better in san carlos. And for the south bay, were down to about threequarters of a mile. Slow it down as we start out. Once this fog clears out we have sunshine in the forecast for today. Make some plans to get outside as we check out our hiking forecast for the south bay. We are going to see temperatures this afternoon reaching into the low 60s. I think the best time to go hiking will be between 1 00 and 4 00 this afternoon. As we go into the rest of the bay area and the forecast if youre planning to head to the beach be careful out there because weve had these sneaker waves and rip currents and we still have the beach hazard statement that continues until 10 00 this morning. And then weep should start to see the waves calming down. As we go into the forecast weve seen a couple storm systems approaching and then just weakening before it has a chance to bring us any rain. Were looking at the same weather pattern with all sunshine, chilly mornings, but at least we will have some mild afternoo afternoons. Mike, youve been busy tracking two Traffic Alerts. Yeah, kari, we have one in brentwood thats affecting the major surface street, vasco, watching for that effect. A deadly crash there. As we look at the map you see the green dominates the freeways. The bulk moving at speed. There is another concern in the north bay, another highway, the second Traffic Alert weve been talking about. This is over southbound highway 121 over to the winery. That is blocking the southbound side. Its only a couple lanes there so you can probably get by on the shoulder, but that is a crash and a car fire watching that as well. I do want to show you what we have over in the bay bridge toll plaza. I was tracking this and we had a disabled vehicle in one of your middle lanes. I dont know if its still there. There it is near the top of the screen. One lane on the approach to the middle lanes of the toll plaza will cause you to tap those brakes and theres more volume. Well track that closely. Back to you. A very good morning and thank you for joining us. Im laura garcia. And im marcus washington. Well get to the road with mike in a bit. First we start with kari and what we can expect. Certainly a foggy start to our morning, kari. Yeah, foggy and freezing in some spots. When you have that combination you can get ice depositing on elevated roadways. We could see that in the north bay. After that a mild day and a breezy wind picking up in the forecast. Still no rain here. Were going to see a lot of sunshine and mild weather throughout the forecast. Well talk about that and get a look at our visibility coming up. Mike, youve been tracking two major problems on the roads this morning. Thats right. On surface streets in brentwood and sonoma, highway 121, as well as the fog you see on the cameras behind me. Focused on the bay bridge camera as we pull that to full screen in the upper middle part of the screen we have a disabled vehicle. Stop in your middle lanes and concerns cars are coming up on that car. There may be assistance now. We have a smooth drive approaching the toll plaza. You see the volume increasing. A crash on 121. Brentwood over on the right side. The rest of the bay affected by fog you see drifting on maps. More updates and more specifics coming up. Laura . All right, thank you very much, mike. So we begin with startling new numbers putting the latest covid surge into perspective. This is where we were 30 days ago on november 1st. You can see the u. S. Confirmed more than 9 million covid19 cases with deaths at less than a quarter million. Fastforward to the current picture, infections are now at more than 19 million, af additional 4. 5 million new cases, and the number of deaths now exceeds 260,000. And cdc experts are meeting today to figure out who should receive the first covid19 vaccines. Today in the bays bob redell is live for thus morning and, bob, i know the most vulnerable will receive that vaccine first. Reporter thats the idea when this panel meets later today. You can see theyll have a live stream, thats the cdc website behind me. People who live in Nursing Homes and longterm care facilities and at high risk are expected to receive priority and as well as health care workers, taking care of those people, doctors, nurses, and other first responders. Assuming there are no surprises the two vaccines could roll out within weeks for the first tier of people. It is expected the rest of us could receive the vaccine late winter early spring. An epidemiologist expects the United States to achieve herd immunity by next summer if enough people get the shot, which he estimates would have to be more than 70 of the population in order to stop transmission. Now this disease isnt going to go away, and were going to continue to see it crop up from time to time. I think its too well established in the human population. And we have just too much travel, too much social interaction for it to go away and its going to take a long, long time to get it internationally around the world back in the box, and were never going to completely get it back into the box. Well continue to see cases crop up from time to time. Reporter dr. Rutherford says the safety profile for the two vaccines is very high right now, which should be encouraging news for anyone with concerns about whether they should receive the shot. As my colleague scott mcgrew pointed out to me, more than 28,000 americans have died from covid since pfizer announced its vaccine just over three weeks ago. Now coming up at 6 00, how the rollout will work and where you will most likely go to get inocula inoculated. Bob redell, today in the bay. Well check back with you. Thank you, bob. Right now we have a live look in San Francisco. The new curfew wrapped up about 30 minutes ago. All bay area counties but marin are under the most restrictive purple tier following the limited stayathome order. San francisco and san mateo become the latest counties to slide into the purple tier on saturday. Some struggling San FranciscoBusiness Owners are calling this yet another hardship but necessary nonetheless. I think its the right move given whats going on. I think mayor breed and dre mak proper decisions. With the new curfew all dining, nonessential retail and outdoor gatherings must end by 10 00 p. M. Restaurants can still offer takeout or delivery and essential retail like Grocery Stores can remain open. Transportation Services Including buses, taxis and ride sharing will still be available. Santa clara countys new travel restrictions taking some completely by surprise. The county just enacted a 14day quarantine for anyone who travels into Santa Clara County for more than 150 miles. Signs are already posted at the airport but that doesnt mean most travelers knew ahead of time what was going on. We didnt know it was mandated until we walked down the stairs. What difference does it make . Under the new rules people driving into the south bay from places like napa or sacramento do have to quarantine. They dont have to quarantine but if you are traveling further away such as lake tahoe or beyond fresno you will fall under those quarantine orders. Here is a grandmother who when push comes to shove you dont want to mess with. Here is why. Something happened last night. Video shows a customer updebt about her order not being ready. Were told she became verbally abusive and she threw a fivepound bottle of hand sanitizer, nearly striking the manager, who was holding her young son. And thats when the boys 57yearold grandmother drew the line. After throwing a bag of food at the irate customer, she turned the table and knocked her down. I was thinking if she can hit my grandson, i mean, i do whatever i have to do. Thats all i was thinking. I wasnt thinking in that moment. Someone entering the restaurant managed to get the irate customer out the door, and that woman happened to be gone by the time police arrived. As we said earlier it is just food. Do not do this over food. Take a chill pill. Its the holidays, come on. Spread a little cheer somewhere. It is 5 38 for you this morning. Cheerful weather. Not right now but maybe later today, kari. Later today. Were dealing with the cold temperatures and fog especially in the north bay. Weve seen those temperatures dipping below freezing in spots but were mostly in the 40s as you head around the Golden Gate Bridge and areas to the south. Check out the current visibility right now. Weve seen it getting worse in parts of the south bay now at threequarters of a mile. Mike, how is that impacting the morning commute . You had a couple of Traffic Alerts you were watching. One of them cleared from sonoma. Fog still registering there. Lets look at the bay bridge toll plaza first. Just in the last, id say, minute and a half, 90 seconds. The middle lanes moving. All the way over on your lefthand side you see the flashing lights. They cleared that disabled vehicle from the middle lanes and now all those folks coming in off the maze, theres the brake tap. We should see metering lights in the next ten minutes, im guessing, if things hold up. The maps show where the bay bridge toll plaza is. No problems on the incline right now and 121 clear from the crash earlier. Look at the fog registering in the north bay, anywhere west of 121 there. We see that crash investigation continues. Vasco road is closed between highway 4 and camino diablo. You see the Speed Sensors near the intersection where things are really jamming up for traffic getting out of brentwood, byron and perhaps down vasco to 580. Other than that fog is the issue. You see that highlighted on the peninsula. Back to you. Thanks, mike. Today the cdc rollout meeting will likely focus on getting it to those who need it most. When will everyone else be able to get one . Were going to look at when experts say the vaccine will be made widely available. Here is a hint for you. You wont get it right away. At zuckerberg and ucsf, preparing to vaccinate people within hours of green lighting a vaccine. They will meet on december 10th to consider an emergency approval for the Pfizer Vaccine or the moderna vaccine. The cdc is determining who will get the first rounds. The process is not straightforward. You have to think who is the frontline of the frontline. We dont have enough to vaccine all in the first batch of vaccine. Reporter as the governor said yesterday 327,000 doses of the Pfizer Vaccine are on the way to california. American Airlines Says its using empty passenger planes to fly those doses worldwide. With no time to waste because that Pfizer Vaccine has to be kept 94 degrees below zero. When its time for the general population you will probably get your vaccine from your provider like kaiser. Kari hall has been tracking those temperatures for us. When is it going to warm up and burn off the fog for us . Well, by late morning well start to see it all clearing out. Visibility is low in a lot of spots. Ive been watching that as we get a look at our sensors around the bay area. Its the worst at sfo only down to a tenth of a mile. Weve seen the visibility dropping in parts of the north bay. As we deal with that were having some very chilly temperatures and well have a nice day. Thats a look at the live view in san jose. I know its hard to see anything. I think by the time we get through the 9 00 to 10 00 hour well see it all clearing out. Sunshine the rest of the day and temperatures warming up as we head to the low 60s for this afternoon reaching up to 65 degrees in livermore and some upper 60s in spots like santa rosa, San Francisco reaching 62. Were all dry. Still no changes in our weather pattern and its been like this as we see the storm systems approach, they just dry up before they bring any rain. They may also bring at times some gusty winds. Looking back on how much rain weve measured so far this water year that started october 1st, we barely measured any rain in october. November we got a little bit but nowhere close to the normal amount. And december is usually our second wettest month and hopefully well get some more rain in here. It looks like it will take at least a Halfway Point of december before we take any chances. San jose, oakland only measuring 5 of the normal amount of rain to this point. And in santa rosa we need nearly 6 inches of rain to catch up to normal so were only getting 22 of the normal amount. Normally we get at least one Atmospheric River coming in.
