Veronica walked 20 minutes to San Franciscos drop off location instead of putting it in the mail. I actually feel by actually dropping it here not i dont trust im sure theyre doing a lot. Reporter starting tomorrow San Francisco will add 11 more drop off locations across the city including the home of the warriors, the chase center. Like the civic center location, staff will be on hand to greet you and sheriffs deputies will transport the ballots back to election headquarters. We have our personnel at each drop off station. It had been canceled because of the pandemic, but there are some households that decided they still wanted to have some kind of halloween celebration. Stanford doctors started the phase three trial of the Johnson Johnson vaccine today to figure out if its effective. Reporter this phase three trial will be down at 180 sites around the world with 50,000 participants. Theyll do 1,000 at stanford. Its a double blind study so some will get active vaccine, others will get a placebo and theyll all be monitored. The vaccine essentially uses a common cold virus to deliver coronavirus genetic material into the body. The goal is to spark an immune response. They wouldnt be administering this to 60,000 people if there wasnt a level of confidence in what theyre doing. Reporter there are now four vaccines in critical stage three human trials in the country. Johnson johnsons was briefly on hold after a participant got sick. Astrazeneca was also paused for the same reason but both trials have resumed. In fact this week researchers in the astrazeneca trial with oxford say their vaccine has shown to have a strong immune response in elderly people. And moderna says by the end of this year it expects to have approximately 20 million doses ready to ship in the u. S. Though its still in stage 3. Projections that we have that i i think and hope will be reasonably accurate that we will know some time in december whether or not we have a safe and effective vaccine. And practically speaking when will we be able to deploy that vaccine. Reporter people in the stanford trial will take a phone survey every week to see if they have symptoms. Dr. Grant says they still need more volunteers. Right now were doing the Young Healthy individuals and older healthy individuals. Well, a new hitech Covid Testing Lab in Los Angeles County is designed to dramatically increase the states testing capacity. 25 million lab will also cut the turn around time for test results and create hundreds of new jobs. Newsom says this lab will cet california apart from the rest of the country. Its roughly double our testing capacity. Itll get us the ability to do over 300,000 plus tests every single day. No state in the country is able to do something of that scale. The high volume lab will also drive down the cost of testing. Governor newsom says the state is currently paying an average of 150 for covid tests. Cruise ships could be back in business in a number of weeks. The cdc lifting its no ship order. Theyve been stuck at the dock for nearly 8 months now decimating the cruise industry. The cdc issued a new conditional order that takes effect sunday.
