Our sky ranger in livermore, one on the dynamic and changing of the many trouble spots in nature of the fire and really terms of air quality. Allowing fire personnel to rob mayeda back with us. Devote everything they can to is it spreads helping put out this fire. In terms of burglary suppression, so today we had about 60 personnel looking for potential looters and protecting property. Good evening. Right now we too are in safety and security mode. We have teams of people, including Law Enforcement and volunteers who are in the area providing those safety and security measures for the northern part of this fire, the areas that reach into San Mateo County. We want to thank you to everybody who has evacuated so far and those that are doing so right now. We are still seeing a lot of people entering the area for whatever reason and we want to reiterate that these are hard personnel who are staffed at these closures and were not allowing anybody back in for safety and security reasons. We stress this because we want to make sure that youre not putting any of our First Responders in a situation where they have to risk their lives to rescue you. I know that everybody wants updates as far as whats going on at their house and whats going on at their neighbors street and their friends property. We cant give you those numbers right now. Right now were trying to assess the needs of the community. Its a really great opportunity for us to show ours and showing haul. We would like your patience in that. So thank you very much, and again, your cooperation and patience is much appreciated. Were listening in here to the cal fire News Conference with some updates for San Mateo County and Santa Cruz County as the fire rages on. A couple of takeaways. There is some progress. It is now 2 contained and 19 missing person cases initially. Now they are down to two missing persons cases in this fire. We are streaming the rest of this News Conference on our website at nbcbayarea. Com. All right, lets go to the north bay instead. The collection of complex fires there are the lnu complex fire. Four people have died, more than 200,000 acres burned, nearly 500 structures destroyed, another 125 have been damaged and were at about 7 containment. Jodi hernandez joins ,joesterda solano and now youre in guerneville, so youve moved. Reporter we have moved because this portion of the lnu lightning complex fire is of course where cal fire say they are most worried about. They say this is their number one priority. We are in guerneville. Normally we come to guerneville for floods. But tonight were here for fire. You can see the smoky hills behind us. That is where the walbridge fire is burning tonight. Cal fire says it is threatening a lot of homes. We live out in the hills. Anything is possible. Mother nature is a lot more powerful than we are. Reporter matt gillem is keeping a close watch on the hills above guerneville, where the walbridge fire is burning out of control. He lives in town and while its under a mandatory evacuation order, hes not going to leave. Im prepared to stay here and defend my house from fire. Im prepared to spray down any embers, put out anything i can and leave if i have to say. Reporter cal fire says the walbridge fire, part of the lnu lightning complex, is their biggest worry tonight. Its already scorched some houses in the hills of healdsburg. Firefighters are doing all they can to keep it from getting to more Populated Areas and destroying more homes. Right now the concern is keeping it out of the guerneville area, but also keeping it from progressing toward hacienda. Reporter helicopters have been dropping into the Russian River and dropping water on the fire all afternoon. Meanwhile, new evacuation orders have been issued. Tonight hundreds are praying their homes will survive. Nd the town gets saved. Reporter again, there are new mandatory evacuation orders in this area. Cal fire says if youre asked to leave, please do so. The roads are very narrow and winding and they need the room to work. So if you get that order, you should move immediately. Meanwhile, the wind is starting to pick up. That is not a good sign. Cal fire is expecting a very tough night. Reporting live in guerneville, im jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. Thank you, well see you later on in the newscast. Lets go down to the south bay. Neighborhoods that were there yesterday are simply gone today. The flames are relentless. This is the destruction from the fire that stretches from San Mateo County into the Santa Cruz Mountains. We just got that update from cal fire. It is now 2 contained. Lets bring in nbc bay areas robert handa who joins us from highway 9 in felton. Robert, it seems like one Mountain Community after another is slowly disappearing. Whats the latest . Reporter as been very depressing around here. Im in felton, which is like many other towns in these mountain communities, almost completely deserted today. I drove around Boulder Creek yesterday and one of the neighborhoods i went through around fallen leaf drive is gone today. Driving through the Santa Cruz Mountains today, it was eerie to see how many spot fires caused by floating embers are popping up. Firefighters from numerous agencies already have their hands full with the relentless flames that have burned up property from San Mateo County to the Santa Cruz Mountains, including here in Boulder Creek. They just put three more engines up there. Its really just keeping flareups from happening again. You know, its really out of our hands. Reporter eric sharping is n to the roof to protect his home, his neighbors and hopefully help the firefighters. My attitude is look out for my neighbors and do everything i can within my power to make this not a place where they need to do work. Reporter the bay area and its surro have seen far too many of these types of images the past few years and now the past few days, which is why some homeowners arent leaving until they absolutely have bndevastated and lost eve they have had. They have lost their animals, they have lost their livelihood and they arent going to be able to recover. Im terrified. I havent slept in two nights. Do you plan to evacuate . Absolutely. When do you plan to go . When i feel its necessary to leave. When would that be . Flames inside of my home. Reporter well, this could be a very crucial weekend for that kind of decision because as we already saw, flames can reach houses very quickly. Live inhanda, nbc bay area news. Thats why so many p have left their homes. I know youve been keeping an eye on the evacuations and we heard the Police Officer say just in scots valley 12,000 people have been evacuated but with that fire in particular theres Something Like 64,000 people. And you can see it right here on the map. This is the czu fire. These are the evacuation orders in place. No evacuation warnings, they art of here now. Warning taking place with the sdu fire. Its right here. So the way points on the map, we have santa clara, san jose, morgan hill, gilroy, hollister. This new one is an evacuation warning just to the east of fremont. Were talking about mill creek road here. So again, an evacuation warning. That means that if you need extra time to evacuate or if you have livestock or pets, the time to go is now. However, if youre not in one of those groups, you need to remain alert because at any time this evacuation warning could become an evacuation order. Let me take you to theus talkin second agosonoma. What we have here is a huge swath of mandatory evacuations. Those are the orders in the red color and then the yellow, which are the evacuation warnings. I want to put Something Else on top of this map real quick so whats happening. Lake sonoma to the north to lake occidental to the south. Heres healdsburg. So imagine that amount of space. Let me use satellite data that shows hot spots and you can see how much fire activity there is taking place in that region. So all of that red is what the satellites are indicating are hot spots and fires that are active. Lets move over to napa, were going to do the same thing. The way points on the map here are to the south we have Travis Air Force base, napa right in the middle there, the county line to the north with lake, the county line to the east with yolo. The blue is the mandatory evacuation order. That tiny bit of yellow right there is an evacuation warning. Let me put the satellite data on top and again you can see the thermal hot spots and fire activity all over the place. The only reason you dont see the evacuation orders on this side and this side because those are in different counties and this is a napve hundreds of thousands of people who need to remain on alert, if not millions of people, and certainly tens of thousands of people who are either out of their homes or must be on alert to leave on a moments notice, raj. Well be watching this. Its online at nbcbayarea. Com with a full list thats updated or get it on our app. Remain alert from now until who knows when. Look at that map. Usually when we cover these fires, thats the big story, one of those maps. Youve just taken us through three different zones, essentially three major stories and thats the scope of all of this here. Good information. We talked about more than 100,000 people have already mentioned, thousands more are waiting with that go bag. They might be evacuated. For everyone else, its the smoke. So we are all in this together. Janelle wang now continuing our coverage tracking the unhealthy air. This is a tough task, janelle, because it keeps changing from bad to worse. And right now the worst spot is Santa Cruz County. It is so bad right now, raj, its at the highest level possible. The air there is hazardous to your health. Ill show you a map, a picture i took at 9 00 a. M. You can see most of the bay area was yellow, just moderately unhealthy air. But around vacaville, livermore, santa cruz in red meaning unhealthy air. Check out the map now last updated at 5 00 p. M. Much more of the bay area in red. The north bay and peninsula seeing some improvements, now green meaning the air is good but check out santa cruz down knee in maroon. That is the highest level of bad air possible. Sky ranger flying in the hills above livermore. The smoky air dangerous to children and the elderly, people with respiratory conditions like copd. But even the healthiest people may notice symptoms. Dependsing on how close you are to the smoke and how sensitive you are, you can feel your eyes start to water, your throat itchy, scratchy. Finding it hard to breathe can also affect healthy adults as well. And so if youre having any impacts or you notice any trouble breathing, you should definitely contact your doctor. A live picture of sutro tower in San Francisco. You actually couldnt see the city at all earlier today but conditions have improved there. You can still see a layer of smoke in the background. Now, we could see some more relief sunday night when a storm passes by and may bring some wind to blow some of the smoke out of here, so fingers crossed. But right now a spare the air alert remains in alert through sunday. Lets bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. Rob, we heard one of the fire captains down in santa cruz say that the weather allowed them mitigated a little bit some of that fog and allowed them to get a little bit of a handle today. And we saw a little bit of that last night at 11 00, how the fire was finally laying down. We had the cooler marine air for elevations below 1,500 feet so that did help on the oceanfacing side of the czu fire there. But this hour typically we scan for raindrops in the skies. What its finding here as we go to the radar map is ash and embers suspended in the updrafts of this massive fire complex, the scu fire comment plex. When youre seeing that much reflectivity on radar associated with a wildfire, it means theres a lot of material being tossed up into the sky from below. So a very active scene there. Temperatures in the 80s and we have winds out of the northwest at 11. 77 degrees near the czu complex. Different story in the north bay. 90degree temperatures and the winds have picked up, around napa county and Solano County. Any wind shift is never good for firefighters on the fire lines. Well be watching that over the next hour or so. Temperatures tomorrow, we begin with 70s in the morning around 9 00. Well have mid90s inland as we head through the afternoon, but get ready for a changeup in the weekend forecast. You might see high clouds tonight, midlevel clouds arriving sunday. If that sounds familiar, we had a similar setup just to start this week. The reason why, if you have your nbc bay area weather app and got a weather alert, its because of a fire weather watch for the entire bay area. It starts 11 00 p. M. And carries into tuesday. The dry lightning risk will be increasing as we go through the weekend. Coming up in our next half hour, well take a closer look at that pattern hour by hour and try to time out when we suspect well see the highest fire danger potentially with this next round coming in. No break around the bay area in that sevenday forecast. Okay, thank you, rob. Were back in a moment. Hi. Were glad you came in. Whats on your mind . Can you help keep these guys protected online . Resources spread so thin it is making it difficult to fight these fires, but what does it look like ground . Garvin thomas joins us from the command center for the czu fire in Santa Cruz County. Weve been listening to them talk today about how difficult it is. Reporter jess, when you hear the numbers im going to share in a moment about just how shortstaffed they are, its pretty staggering. Its not just that theres so many fires burning, theyre missing a reliable source of help, prisoners. Covid outbreaks mean the number of correction crews are reduced for everybody. Boy, they could really use them on a fire like this one. Too much fire and not enough people to fight it. Czu lightninx fire burning in heavy timber that has not seen fire in decades, its a particular problem. Just how short are they on resources . Very. Like by a factor of ten. Right now were sitting at about 1,000 personnel for a 50,000 plus acre fire. To painting t the picture for w that means, traditionally that would be adequate for a fire thats 5,000 acres, not 50,000 acres. Reporter so what does that mean when it comes to fighting the fire . Well, containment for the moment is out of the question. Four days into the fight, it remains at zero. What resources they do have must be put elsewhere. We are focusing solely on making sure that we can do point of attack on specific structures that are immediately threatened. Once we get more resources in, well be able to aggressively attacking and making containment along the perimeter. Garvin, lets bring you in. Any opportunities for them to finding more manpower . Reporter they have requested it, but heres the challenge, and they have been told that there are crews from other regions who are coming in to help them out. But even once you get a firefighter from another region on site, it takes at least a day before that firefighter can get to the front lines. So theres even a delay once people are on site before you can get them out there helping. As you heard at the top of the newscast with the containment going up 2 , thats so important because unless they get containment on this fire and all they can do is focus on structures, theyre just going to continue to be more and more structures that are being threatened. Thank you. I know youll be back in studio with me this evening. Youve got to build a base camp and do a lot of stuff. It is complicated. Thank you, garvin. In marin county, this is the woodward fire. People several communities are now under an evacuation warning. This is going to be a tense weekend. Were back in a moment with the other warnings in other parts of the bay area. Stay with us. Right now at 6 30, fires raging across the bay area leaving a path of destruction, and they are growing by the hour. Sky ranger over the czu fire. This is in santa cruz and san mateo counties along the coast. You can see just how much smoke its kicking up. So far flames have burned 50,000 acres. Very little containment. Thousands of people under evacuation orders. 20 homes destroyed. In the north bay now, the collection of fires called the lnu complex have turned deadly. Four people have died, 219,000 acres burned, 480 homes destroyed. Containment is at 5 . Lets get to the south bay and the east bay. This plume of smoke is over livermore. This is the largest of the fires burning in the bay area, 229,000 acres and burning in five different counties, including santa clara, alameda and contra costa county. Containment is at 10 . Combine all the smoke billowing from those fires and the bay area has some of the least healthy air on the planet tonight, causing problems with Peoples Health and their businesses. We bring in nbc bay areas scott budman live in oakland with that part of the story. Obviously with covid, scott, people wanting to be outdoors. Its one of the few things we can do and yet with this air quality its probably what she shouldnt be doing. Yeah, youre exactly right, jessica. Even the masks have changed. We got our hands on a few of these n95 masks. Doctors tell us theyre much better at keeping the smoke particles out than the masks weve been wearing the last few months. Those doctors also tell us they have been seeing a lot more patients than usual this week. Theyre complaining of some new symptoms because of all the smoke, but also recurring symptoms made worse by the air quality. They say if you have to be outside, make it for as short a time as possible and bring lots of water. They say this is serious. I get stuffy when i get smoky like this. And business . Its too early to tell. Reporter indeed some businesses told us theyre suffering because of the bad air. They say people dont want to go outside as much. They dont even wanti to take their cars out of the garage because of the falling ash. Try to stay inside as much as you can and dont ignore any symptoms that you may be feeling. They say they, like the smoke above us, are likely to linger for some time. Live in oakland, scott budman, nbc bay area news. This could be the final blow for a lot of businesses. Thank you, scott. There are now more than 100,000 people under evacuation orders across the bay area. The county with the most people fleeing their homes is Santa Cruz County with about 64,000 people evacuated. Ne 30,000 people under mandatory evacuation napa county has more than 13,000 people evacuated. San mateo county has about 1,000. Crews are busy trying to keep that scu fire from reaching morgan hill. For now the flames are staying away from the san jose foothills and headed south instead. Nbc bay areas Damian Trujillo joins us from the san jose foothills. Damian, this is where you live. You were evacuated a couple of days ago. Are you back in your home yet . Reporter yeah, we were able to come back this morning, raj, thank you for asking. We have to go live here because theres no cell service any closer to where the flames are here at the scu fire. It does remain at the 10 containment. Those were the numbers from earlier this morning as the crews are trying to keep it from heading south. Smoke fills the entire region below the Lick Observatory. This is where firefighters put up a successful battle to save the national landmark. Now they hope to keep the flames away from morgan hill. Morgan hill councilman john mckay worries what a depleted fire force means for his city so morgan hill is mobilizing, closing streets, alerting residents that the towns Eastern Hills are under an evacuation warning. Right now due to the fact that there are so many fires, resources are getting pulled away so we cant rely on our normal level of service. That has everybodys much more concerned. Its Mother Nature versus you. This is the most terrifying experience ive had in my life, to be honest. Besides the 89 earthquake. But this is worse because our house could be destroyed right in front of our eyes. Reporter nbc bay area has learned that the children in the boys ranch, which is a Detention Center for atrisk youth, have been evacuated, all because of the flames that could be headed south. I fear that we may lose our s fire. Then you look across the valley and you can see the big smoke from the santa cruz fire. And stuck in the middle of all these poor homeowners and residents who are trying to stay away from these approaching flames. Were live near Lick Observatory here in san jose, im Damian Trujillo, nbc bay area news. The anguish felt by so many fire victims was captured by one woman in Solano County desperately looking for her horses. Oh, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. No, no. No. You can hear her out of breath and also just in tears as she doesnt find her horses, but they were located later and they are safe this evening. That woman, shes a rancher, christa heffner. She posted that she lost nearly everything in the five jure jus her business was starting to recover from the coronavirus concerns. Hairstylists, pub owners begging for the state to give them some guidance. Some workers are saying a simple timeline of when they could possibly move businesses inside in some capacity would be helpful. Weather also having an impact on places like mccarthys pub. Theyre fortunate to have outdoor seating but they had to close earlier this week because of all the smoke in the air. Its just that wld make thi easier for us if we had some idea of when were able to go back inside, just limited, safe, distanced. Lets add another complication to this. Rainy winter on the way. Eileen mccarthy wonders if shell be able to open her doors at all if she cant have at least some people inside. The covid outbreak that swept san quentin prison is stabilizing. There are now 37 active cases with just three of them developing this month. At one point the prison was struggling to manage more than 2,000 cases and it was the biggest covid hot spot in the nation. That outbreak huge, began in june when a busload of inmates from a Southern California prison was transferred to san quentin, bringing the virus with them. Since then 25 inmates have died as well as one corrections officer who lived in san jose. A former south bay Business Executive is the fifth suspect charged in the Sheriffs Department scandal over a concealed carry permit. It is a story nbc bay areas i year, finding that donors to chef lori smiths Election Campaign got favorable treatment in the form of permits to carry concealed weapons. They were rarely granted to her nondonors. A sheriffs captain was among four people indicted by a grand jury earlier this months. The fifth person charged is christian west, identified as the former ceo of a security company. Up next here at 6 00, a fourdecade nightmare ended today. The Golden State Killer was sentenced. He also took off his mask and spoke to his v the flames. Yeah, that leads to rapid changes in fire behavior. What happens with air quality impacts fire conditions which are the particulate matter pollution being caused by all the fires around the bay area. Smoke is our main concern, the unhealthy air. In the case of the trivalley youre looking at 36 continuous hours of unhealthy air that will likely carry through for at least the first half of the weekend. Lets show you San Francisco, and thats quite a view. You see the smoke off to the west. Top of the downtown buildings. Winds are up to 37 miles an hour. The wind is picking up short term and that gives you a little relief. Into san jose, skies trying to clear up a little bit, 80 degrees after a high of 89. A little bit not so nice out towards contra costa county, inland out towards the trivalley, 96 for a high, 89 currently. Still looking at unhealthy air quality. The same region especially for tomorrow, inland, east bay, south bay, santa cruz down wind of the czu fire, youll see unhealthy air tomorrow. So the topic of smoke is really amazing. We try to compare this back in 2008 in june. This is above and beyond what we saw back in 2008. You can see how the smoke covers the entire state. What you probably would never think you would see is this much smoke interacting with a Tropical Storm. We found this on one of the weather models. Look at our california smoke. Thats the line in red wrapping around the area of low pressure which used to be Tropical Storm genevieve. An example of the conditions we have now interacting with whats coming our way this weekend, which is pretty spectacular to see Something Like that on the smoke. Two systems like that interacting together, were really going to have to watch that storm to bring more midlevel moisture away sunday into monday. Temperatures tomorrow overall are going to be very similar to today. Youre looking at numbers in the mid90s inlands, enduring more unhealthy air and smoke pollution, especially for areas closer to santa cruz and the trivalley. Then we have to turn our attention to sunday. I think the wind may pick up as storms start to form offshore, but that introduces the chance of seeing some lightningsparked fires as, again, that area of low pressure you saw in that smoke forecast starts to approach Southern California. It starts to shed away highlevel moisture to start, increasing midlevel moisture as we get into sunday. So the fire watches begin at 11 00 a. M. On sunday and carry all the way through to tuesday at 11 00 a. M. So its a 48hour window and you can see that area of green just offshore through 7 00 a. M. On tuesday, thats the area we have to watch. If thats a little closer inland, we could see another round of those densely packed lightning strikes with some of these fastmoving cells tofse fire weather watches upgraded to red flag warnings tomorrow as we get closer to 24 hours within that event. So for now saturday is the calmer of the two weather days and then from there as early as midmorning sunday with the dry air trapped below, i think the risk of dry lightning will actually be higher sunday, maybe into early monday. Then possibly some rain showers. I mean thats the best case scenario. The system manages to pull enough moisture to drop some real rain. Given the speed of the showers passing through, like earlier this week, this is the type of pattern that we dont often see, we last saw in 2008 but seems to be repeating itself twice in about seven days. Its like a florida pattn. And its going to be high humidity too. So if you dont have the storms, youll reallyup. Okay, thank you.
