Forecast with kari, another warm one ahead. Were starting out with warm temperatures again this morning. This is what we look at for those fire conditions. Usually those Early Morning hours are critical and seeing some of the fire not spreading as rapidly and were looking at still another morning start where we have temperatures in the upper 60s, not much of a wind, but at times we get these gusts up to about 11 miles per hour. As we talk more about this well get a look at how our trends change for today. Thats coming mike, hows it looking for those routes . Kari, we actually have a couple of Traffic Alerts were watching. On the peninsula, getting more dale around the embarcadero exit. The speeds are okay on the peninsula but the big problem is the active Traffic Alert in San Francisco for northbound 101. From 280 you see more slowing building up. Half the freeway is closed right now because of a crash, a pickup truck reportedly hit the hillside there and brought dirt and debris down on the roadway as well as the vehicle. Maybe until 5 30 or 6 00 until that opens. Meanwhile the rest of the bay, including the bay bridge is moving very smoothly. Back to you. All right, thank you very much, mike. Weve got our team spread out across the bay area to bring you the very latest on all the wildfires. Lets start in Santa Cruz County with a look at the czu complex fires. Take a look at these photos showing wednesday night versus last night. The fires really starting to exploding. Today in the bay kris sanchez joins us live with more on all new evacuations that happened overnight as well. Kris . Reporter we know that that fire continues to grow unchecked in the nighttime hours, then the daytime really isnt much better. The fire has 0 containment and firefighters are on the line but they are working doubles at this point because no reenforcements are coming in. We do have a critical evacuation to tell you about. Uc santa cruz ordered all of its students off campus and they told them to not expect to return for at least two weeks. The Evacuation Center for students and staff for ucsc, the Coconut Grove and the boardwalk in santa cruz. So many people have already lost their homes. The ones youre looking at right here, these are in boulder creek, cal fires official count is up to 50. However, were told that we should expect numbers in the hundreds instead. Those are just the ones that are counted and confirmed. We were driving around yesterday through the evacuation area and we happened upon some homes burning in bonny doon, not counted at that point. 21,000 homes are under threat as we speak. Some of them the homes of our nbc bay area colleagues. Yesterday our crews also came upon people who were choosing to stay against cal fires advice. They dont encourage people to do that. Others were loaded up and headed to safety, urging people to leave and help firefighters do their jobs. If you are not paying attention and youre being stubborn and youve gotten an Evacuation Order to get out, get out now. Reporter so with about 50,000 evacuees the county of santa cruz is asking all visitors and tourists who are here right now to pack up and leave so that they can free up those hotel rooms for the evacuees who are going to need them in the coming days. A lot of folks trying to avoid shelters. Theyre asking visitors to stay away this weekend. We know that there are also officers from other agencies here to help with roadblocks. Those are not just for the protection of people who are evacuating and leaving. Thats also to protect the homes once people are gone. So that looters or somebody who is just a curious onlooker cant get in. So if you leave be prepared to be gone for a while. And that is so that Law Enforcement can secure your home and make sure that nobody gets in there. We are expecting a cal fire update at 6 00 this morning. Well bring it to you live. In scotts valley, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Good advice to say over the hill. So many people are trying to get out right now. Thanks for the latest. 5 05 for you this morning, and as california wildfire fight intensifies so does the war of words surrounding the fires between Governor Newsom and President Trump. We have Team Coverage for you this morning, today in the bay tracie potts is live for us in wilmington, delaware with the spat between the president and newsom, and joe bidens big night. Tracie . Reporter marcus, good morning from wilmington, good morning, everyone, as theyre wrapping it up here we heard about the wildfires and how theyre getting political. It came up as part of the dnc last night when Governor Newsom spoke and pointed fingers at President Trump for trying to withhold funds for fighting those wildfires. He initially was not going to appear at the dnc but ended up giving remarks. President Trump Holding a rally railing on a number of Different Things that the democrats were talking about here. But then Governor Newsom pointed out that the president tried to withhold those funds. Heres what the president said and here was Governor Newsoms response. Ive been telling them this now for three years. But they dont want to listen. Maybe were just going to have to make them pay for it because they dont listen to us. We say youve got to get rid of the leaves. Youve got to get rid of the debris. Youve got to get rid of the fallen trees. The president of the United States threatened the state of california, 40 million americans, that happen to live here in the state of california, to defund our efforts on wildfire suppression because he said we hadnt raked enough leaves. Cant make that up. Reporter Governor Newsom staying in california speaking from a spot a mile away from one of the wildfires. Meantime here in wilmington, right in that building behind me we heard from now officially the president ial nominee for the democrats joe biden. He still needs to talk a lot more about policy details, some of his critics and even some democrats say. But last night was more of an inspirational big picture speech about his vision and about his opponent. Hes failed to protect america. And my fellow americans that is unforgiveable. As president ill make you a promise. Ill protect america. Every attack, seen and unseen, always, without exception, every time. Reporter he also talked about coronavirus, saying hed support a National Mask mandate. Were obviously going to hear a lot more from biden on the campaign trail and of course next week as the republicans get their convention under way, well cover that one for you as well. Live from wilmington this morning, im tracie potts, today in the bay. Thank you very much, tracie, big political year. In the meantime, big fires in the bay area, were continuing to follow. And the situation is very dire in the north bay as well where the lnu complex fire, it is still burning out of control. Last night sadly we learned that three people died in a home in napa county where the hennessy fire burned nearly 200,000 acres. In all, at least four deaths are being blamed on the fires in the north bay so far. The flames overnight actually moved closer to healdsburg. Were going to have a live report from that area coming up. Show you new video from overnight this morning. Its also from the north bay, time lapse from the pg e wildfire camera showing the flames overtaking Mount Jackson, east of guerneville. You can see what appears to be fire crews working all night long to try to protect that area. Wow, the intensity there, all right, thanks, laura. New Evacuation Orders are in effect in the south bay, this is where the scu complex fire is burning. Take a look at this right here. You can see right here, i want to show you the map, this as you can see those evacuation areas, the large part in the red. The people in the yellow areas, theyre being told that they need to evacuate if the fire gets too close. This is in gilroy as well as morgan hill. Today in the bays bob redell live for us in morgan hill, in the yellow area. Have authorities made a call yet . Looks like were having trouble there with his microphone this morning. A number of residents have already been told to get ready to evacuation and the people who live there are keeping an eye on the hills of morgan hill. Right now we want to get a look at the forecast for you right now. You can see right here the smoke that is taking over so much of the bay area. Step out your house. You cant help but to smell that smoke. Meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring the air quality concerns were seeing across the bay area. And kari, still not looking good out there for us. No, but let me show you something that has been a little bit more positive as we look at our weather conditions. Near that scu lightning complex fire. So we look at our weather conditions from our center, mount hamilton. We are getting some cooler temperatures up there this morning as well as some higher humidity. That may stop the spread from happening so rapidly. But were also going to see conditions changing throughout today. As we look at some of the fires burning farther to the north and the north bay, were slightly cooler but notice how much change from the humidity to the temperatures as were looking at some higher humidity in some spots. Were still starting out the morning at 70 degrees. The tridrifts of smoke continue. Air quality will be unhealthy, right now some of the worst air quality is in parts of the trivalley and inland east bay. Well have more on this and temperatures for the weekend coming up. Mike, whats happening out there for the drive . Well, kari, we now have two Traffic Alerts going on here, peninsula into San Francisco. Lets show you the maps so we can zoom in on the first one were talking about, north 101 as you head toward vermont street and the exit in San Francisco. There was a lot of slowing that showed up up to the scene shy of the skyway. Its kind of calmed down, i think some crews went to the area, again, lots of dirt and the crash itself blocking your two right lanes northbound, but two lanes are open. Going to take you past 5 30, maybe until 6 00 until that clears. The second traffic incident is northbound 101 approaching the embarcadero exit. The off ramp covered in sand because a vehicle hit the sand barrels there. Chp issued a warning for folks on motorcycles, which are popular during the hotter weather. Use caution because right now they need a crew there to clean up the sand as well. North 101, the embarcadero exit and marcus we have the general closures, stay out of the evacuation zones for all of our many fires. Speaking of those evacuation zones we were talking to bob redell down in morgan hill. I know thats one of the areas theyre being told to be on stand by if they need to leave quickly. Reporter correct, marcus, a number of people have been warned they might have to be evacuated so be ready to do that. What theyre doing right now, theyve told us through our cheryl hurd, theyre keeping an eye on the hills behind me, the eastern foothills, the scu complex fire comes over the hill and down the slope. They feel their fate is tied to the wind, which way the wind blows, if its going to push the fire into morgan hill or away from the city, which would be ideal. Signs are up around town letting people know that only residents are allowed in certain areas. As i mentioned evacuation warnings are in effect for a number of homes located close to those foothills. Go to our website at nbcbayarea. Com to find out if your address is in that warning zone. Heres one family whos packed and ready to go. The photo albums. Jewelry. Just anything important. You know, heritage from the grandparents. Its already loaded and weve got the dogs ready. Were leaving because we live on top of a hill and i dont want to watch it burn. Theres nothing here that is so important that arrive got to stay here. Weve got the cool stuff loaded. And, you know, well get out of the way. Reporter the scu lightning complex fire is actually a series of around 20 fires burning in alameda county, contra costa county, down here in santa clara. Its consumed over 157,000 acres, only 5 contained and threatening around 20,000 structures. Quick note about the containment. There are some fires within this complex that have reached close to full containment but if you look at the big ones, a lot of those are burning out of control and thats why the containment number for the overall complex is so low. Again, its 5 . Theres no estimated date on when theyll have full containment. Reporting live in more dpgan hi bob redell, today in the bay. Thanks, bob. 5 14 right now, thinking of trying to escape the smoke and head to santa cruz . Think again. The warning for beach goers and tourists as all these fires are raging on. And good morning, a very happy friday to you. You may have heard by now that uber and lyft are going to get you where you want to go tonight. They are no longer going to suspend operations after a court in california said they didnt have to reclassify their employees right now. They could continue to appeal. Originally a court had said that had to be today but the Appeals Court has delayed that deadline. Uber and lyft are hoping they can run out the clock on this one, delaying until a November Ballot proposition that would get rid of the law. The author of that law, Assembly WomanLorena Gonzales points out uber and lyft have had years to get ready for the change but are now claiming its all too sudden. The District Attorney in San Francisco, meanwhile, says dont forget about doordash. Hes suing the company to force that change. Doordash not commenting on that, but it does say this morning it is adding grocery deliveries to its app which will be very helpful in this time of pandemic. Other news, Mark Zuckerberg is testifying under oath, deposition to the federal trade commission, talking about antitrust issues. This is definitely a first. And marcus and laura, take a look at this, this is absolutely amazing video of Bay Area Company called xwing, the totally autonomous airplane flight in history, no pilot in this grand caravan, all the way from takeoff to landing, which is incredible. Its like a robot car but in the sky. One of the first applications i can think of is lets get those things over the fires with water, you know, maybe not that small of an airplane. Right. We could have that, that would be amazing. That would be good there. Wow, theyve been using those big 747s, filling them with water for the big drops. Can you imagine . That would be innovative. We need it now. Wow, thats amazing. Thanks for that, scott. Well, of course the fires is what everyones talking about, its our big breaking news story this morning, three complex wildfires now burning across the bay area. Tens of thousands of people are under Evacuation Orders, most of these fires with zero containment. One of the biggest is burning in Santa Cruz County and ahead of the weekend officials are telling visitors you just need to stay away. They dont want you coming to beaches. Theyve got to keep the roads clear for firefighters and of course all the evacuees. In the meantime Half Moon Bays mayor as well says hotels there, theyre actually filled up we vascul evacuees, people who have nowhere else to go. Hes worried the narrow roads you find there, winding through Half Moon Bay, they could become clogged and cause a lot of problems for all the people that need to evacuate those areas. So heed the warning, you know the weather conditions arent good to be out anyway, everyone should just be staying home, kari. Absolutely. The air quality has been so bad. When you look at San Francisco and whats happening right now with the fog returning and even though were not seeing smoke drifting in that direction, its kind of just trapping in the smoke that we do have in the region so it makes the air quality worse over the city. As we look of the our temperatures hour by hour were starting out this morning a little bit cooler. We can see the fog near the coast. That will continue at least through noon in spots like Half Moon Bay as you make your way inland for the south bay at lunchtime were in the lower 80s. As we go into the rest of the day were going to see the temperatures warming up for the inland east bay with temperatures in the 90s, 91 degrees in danville at 3 00 and 92 in santa rosa. The fog starts the roll back in later on this evening and may be more widespread for tomorrow morning butteer also seeing those temperatures for the inland areas still reaching into the 90s. Were going to have some hot weather and well watch for the
