Everywhere you look, theres fire on the mountain. Huge flames leaping into the night sky along hennessey ridge. Cal fire says this fire has burned 2,400 acres and is 0 contained. With the hot, dry conditions that weve been having and then coupled with this weather that weve had, its not common for the area with all the lightning strikes that weve been having. Its just its very can be very hazardous for the fire conditions. Reporter the cause believed to be lightning. This video from the local chp office showing a strike a short while before the first reports of fire. This structure fell victim to the flames today. More than 200 other buildings are threatened, including the ones on the grounds. Nichelini winery. It looped around a canyon, and now its just where that smoke is up there. So its kind of at our perimeter. Reporter theyve been making wine here since their grandfather founded the operation in 1890. Its important for us to protect the house that he built, the winery he built. You cant really replace that. Reporter this cell phone video from the nichelini family doing lastminute preparations today, including putting sprinklers on the roofs of their buildings. One thing firefighters have going for them tonight is the wind. There isnt any as opposed to a few hours ago when the wind was pushing those flames right down that mountain. The nichelinis can now only wait for a phone call to fd ether th saved because like hundreds of others near this fire, theyve been evacuated. You mentioned the gamble fire burning north of lake berryessa. The latest on that, 600 acres burned and, like the hennessy fire here, zero containment. Rob, what are we looking at for the next couple of days . Well, right now at least the good news, terry did mention it. Were not seeing as much wind as we had earlier today and the lightning that sparked many of these fires has for the most part moved out. Temperatures still pretty warm. 79 degrees. The wind is relatively light at both the hennessy fire and the gamble fire, which has burned right down to the edge of lake berryessa. Lets give you the time lapse looking back on the hennessy fire. Notice that smoke plume being pushed all over the place by strong outflow winds moving away from thunderstorms. Thats the reason the fire took off today. You can see the north push of that fire with strong, gusty winds, then back towards the camera as the winds begin to change direction during the day. As the winds have backed off a little tonight and the thunder and lightning have moved out, that is good news short term for firefighters as we shouldnt see any more lightningsparked fires tomorrow. But the challenging conditions will be the terrain and temperatures likely above 100 degrees along the fire lines tomorrow. As for what neighborhoods are impacted, its a simple numbers game spread out over pg es territory. Once you know the megawatts, you can look at the different blocks and recognize, okay, these are the different blocks we are going to need to take out in order to meet the expectation or the directive of the cal iso. Reporter today Governor Newsom issued an emergency proclamation in an attempt to reduce the need for blackouts. Large energy users are now shifting to their backup sources during peak hours, and newsom says its unacceptable that the state failed to predict and plan for this crisis. The states Testing Backlog is officially cleared and we now know how its affecting our numbers. Late last month the state revealed some 250,000 tests hadnt been processed because of a glitch. Well, that meant the number of new cases was being underreported. Now the state is all caught up. After processing the backlog, it added more than 14,000 new cases. The numbers that we put out today are the latest numbers, 6,469 positive cases in the state. Those case numbers are high, but they are trending in the right direction. This graph breaks down what the governor is talking about. The blue line shows case numbers before the backlog. It was declining. But as you can see, the yellow line shows the trend with the backlog cases now added, and the numbers are just slightly a bit higher but numbers are still trending downward. It is a step in the right direction for a coastal county. Governor newsom says Santa Cruz County is off the state watch list. He said it actually happened on friday.
