Campaign focused on restoring the nation and fighting for working families. Because this is a serious moment for our nation. Were at one of those inflexion points. Youve heard me say that before in our history. A lifechanging election. When she was attorney general, harris worked with bidens late son, bo, who served in the same role in delaware. I learned, quickly, that bo was the kind of guy who inspired people to be a better version of themselves. Their sights now set on november 3rd. 82 days from now. We need more than a victory on november 3rd. We need a mandate that proves that the past few years do not represent who we are or who we aspire to be. And you mentioned that virtual fundraiser that happened earlier this evening. And they raised a lot of money yesterday. Even after the announcement to put senator harris on the ticket. The Campaign Said that they had their best hour of fundraising, ever. Continuing on to say they had their best day, ever. So momentum here continues as the Campaign Rolls forward. Live in greenville, delaware, im matt delucia. Back to you. Now, Governor Newsom and Kamala Harris have a friendship that goes back more than two decades. You may remember, he backed her campaign for presidency and had only praise for her today. My my insight, in terms of the character and the competency and her devotion to the cause that i think unites the vast majority of us. Her empathy. Her compassion. Her her learnedness, her doggedness, her commitment to solving problems, not just to identifying problems. Newsom was elected mayor in San Francisco in 2003. The same year that harris became San Franciscos da. Now, if bidenharris win, Governor Newsom will appoint a replacement to serve out the balance of harriss term. That replacement would likely run to fill the seat permanently in 2022 general elections. Newsom says he wont even think about who to appoint until after the november election. President trump said he only caught glimpses of todays big event for biden and harris. He then echoed what he said yesterday, referring to how Kamala Harris was disrespectful to biden last year on the campaign trail. And now, all of a sudden, she is running to be Vice President , saying how wonderful he is. I thought it was a very unusual pick because she said such bad things. He added senator harris is a proponent for tax hikes and is antifracking and says thats something that will not go over well in many states. As the world waits for a coronavirus vacc scientists at ucsf say a nasal spray developed by University Researchers could potentially slow the spread of the virus. The big question is when will the spray be available . Nbc got to the bottom of what could be a gamechanging treatment. Reporter ucsf researchers believe a nasal spray could be one of the keys to dramatically slowing down the spread of the coronavirus. Through some feat of biological engineering, we generated a very potent molecule that binds very tightly. And so, it can do the job that a traditional antibody would do. Reporter this video from ucsf explains how the coronavirus impacts the body. The virus uses these socalled spike proteins to infect cells in the lungs. Which, then, create more virus cells that, then, infect more lung cells. Ucsf graduate student Michael Shoaf led a team of researchers who found that certain nanobodies, which in this case, came from camels and llamas, combine to coronavirus proteins. It led to the engineering of a more potent version of these antibodies, which resulted in the creation of synthetic antibodies known as aero nabs. In order to generate a very stable and very potent molecule. Reporter perhaps best of all, these can be delivered into the body through nasal spray or an inhaler. The goal is to make it an inexpensive, overthecounter medication. Potentially, as soon as just months from now. But shoaf says we are still dealing with science, and its important not to set a hard timeline for its availability. While we are very confident in the work that weve done and it neutralizes the virus in our cell culture test. There is, of course, no substitute for the further work that will be done by our by industry and clinical partners. More corona news. The u. S. May soon have a vaccine thanks to a hospital in the east bay. Kieser permanente participating in a phase three Clinical Trial for coronavirus vaccine. Kieser says it plans to about 1,400 people in four different sites in california and oregon. But the goal is to enroll more than 30,000 people in more than 120 locations. This Clinical Trial, although its being done at on a much quicker timeframe than we normally see for because of the global emergency. It, very much, looks looks, very much, like a typical vaccine trial that we would do in a phase three study. We told you russia announced yesterday it has a vaccine and plans to immunize 30 million people. That decision, though, is drawing skepticism from doctors that say there is a lack of testing. The state is slowly catching up. Making its way through the thousands of backlogged cases. A data glitch at the end of july left 295,000 health records, many of them covid19 tests, unprocessed. That led to an underreporting of new cases. The state is trying to stack the backlog cases on the day they actually happened. Heres how we look right now. Californias reporting more than 11 1 2 thousand new cases in the past 24 hours. That includes about 6,200 that were backlogged. First day of Virtual School of the year for the south bays largest district. We are talking about san jose unified. And there was a lot of concern over whether you could teach some 30,000plus students virtually. In san jose, where teachers and students say they are all just trying to learn how to do something new. Its not the usual hustle and bustle here at the middle school or any of the 40plus schools in the district. Now, teachers were going to instruct from classrooms and live stream to students at home. But at the last minute, teachers were given the option to instruct from their own home as well. The San Jose Teachers Association estimates about 200 teachers conducted class from home. And the vast majority of staff live streamed from the class room, where cameras were not allowed. Although san jose unified is still compiling information, we were told, by midmorning, 93 of students were connected to the virtual classroom. Although, many parents told us the School Website was overwhelmed at the start. They also said, eventually, things got worked out. A sigh of relief after the first day to say, you know, at least i think we can get this to work. The president of the San Jose Teachers Association says one big change from last years crash course in online teaching is that everyone is essentially using the same platform, known as canvas. Today, we worked on how are we going to turn in assignments on this on this new learningmanagement system online . So, teaching teaching both them and me how to do some things we have taken for granted for so long. Teachers want to be with their kids but it has to be safe. And so so, im very positive what im hearing about the ability to connect and to talk. And i think its just getting to know each other, in these first couple days. Certainly, the district and parents will have a much better feel for how things went after they study this first day. But, so far, the consensus seems to be things are going much smoother now than they did when school ended last year. In san jose, robert handa, nbc, bayarea news. Robert, thank you. That mehappened may 30th. 26 have died. We, as the medical professionals, recommend that we begin to process reducing the overall prison population to below 50 of current capacity, to halt transfers between correctional facilities, and to follow Public Health guidance. Department of corrections and the Governors Office have both said they are working night and day to reduce the population statewide. But stress that its more complicated than simply release the incarcerated. Tourism is San Franciscos number one industry. And its going to take years until those visitors and conferences come back. Thats according to the San Francisco travel association. The group says the number of tourists in the city will be down more than 50 this year. The citys projected to lose 10 billion this year and next year. Analysts dont expect a full recovery until 2023. Well, the dramatic drop in tourism doesnt just hurt San Francisco. Its really widespread, across the bay area. Governor newsom today talking about how to help these businesses. Among the things he is proposing is a hiring tax credit. Basically, a tax credit would be given to Small Businesses to help bring on more workers. Businesses are having a hard time, that are on the edge of making a decision whether or not they can afford to hire someone. And so, we want to make that a little easier. Working, again, with legislative leaders to develop a new hiring tax credit. Lot of good ideas from the legislature. We have our ideas. The governor, also, proposing that Small Businesses receiving Paycheck Protection Program money, ppp money, be exempt from state taxes. Another potential hit to the economy. Ubers ceo said he could have to shut down the ride service in california for months. Uber and lyft are fighting a court ruling mandating that that they reclassify drivers as employees instead of gig workers. A change that could cost the Companies Hundreds of millions of dollars. Ubers ceo says if the courts dont grant a stay, he will be forced to shut down until the november election, hwhen voters have a chance to weigh in. It would be really unfortunate at a historic time, it would put vast swaths of our drivers out of work. Without the opportunity to earn, it would take away transportation from hundreds of thousands of californians. If passed in november, prop 22 would classify atbase drivers as contractors. Neither, covid, nor a recession, could keep some charitable doctors from helping the oakland zoo. They came to the rescue of a hyena. Its a story you will see only on nbc bay area. And tonight, scott budman takes us into the operating room. Reporter in better times, tusker, the spotted hyena, was frolicking at the oakland zoo. But tusker has seemed sick lately, and the staff couldnt figure out why. So, they brought tusker to the Sage Veterinary Center in redwood city, where doctors could put him under sedation and give him a thorough examination. Reached out looking to get an mri of tusker the hyena. A procedure that normally costs several thousand dollars. But the zoo has been struggling because of the recession. So, sage offered its services, for free. Its hard Financial Times for them. And its really for a good cause to help these animals as best we can. So any time that we can help them out, were really happy to do it. Tusker was put under. Given an mri twhich check for brain tumors. And then, doctors decided to do a spinal tap. Results are expected within 48 hours. We always have a huge commitment to taking good care of these animals. But this is really the next level and its possible because of their generosity. So far, were told the initial prognosis is pretty good. The samples being sent off the to the lab. Tusker will be back at the oakland zoo by this evening. In redwood city, scott budman, nbc, bay area news. Glad to hear about that recovery. Of all our years here together, i think that might be the first time we have talked about a hyena getting surgery. And we wish him the best. Yes, for sure. Hi, jeff. Good to see you. Superwarm today. Hey, good to see you guys. Yes. Warming up today and its going to get uncomfortably hot here as we push ahead towards the next couple days. So, i really wanted to focus in on the heat warning that goes into effect on friday, and lasts at least at least through sunday, at this point. Again, an extended stretch of some hot weather. We are just on the cusp of that happening. So you can see this heat warning. These areas in r alameda, and santa clara counties. Those are the spots under this excessive heat watch where temperatures will range from 95 to 105 degrees. So it is that time where you got to remember to drink lots of water. Check on the elderly. Especially, those without air conditioning. And dont forget those pets as well. We will take a real close focus in on those temperatures here in just a bit. But i do want to start it off with tomorrow morning. And the biggest change youll see here is quite a bit warmer than we have been used to lately. 69 in the trivalley. 68 for the south bay. So, a warmer start tomorrow morning. Less fog in San Francisco at 61. And the north bay at 64. I think were good for about a tendegree warmup tomorrow. So, as we go back to school, you want to get your kids outside to get some fresh air. 11 00 a. M. To 2 00 p. M. Is still that best zone to avoid the hottest part of the day. We will be up to 89 in san jose. But look how it jumps in gilroy. Concord and danville, 100 degrees. As you move closer to the bay and coast, we still see numbers drop but this is some warmer weather for you, at least lately. 87 in palo alto. And then, we will hold on to some upper 60s here in the outer sunset. And for the north bay, also going back up to some 90s and low 100s tomorrow. Again, this is the beginning of the heat. We have it at 97 in novato. 100 in clear lake. So lets get an expansive look. We have Tropical Storm elida from the south. Some of the humidity from that i do think is going to move close to us. But again, this hot area of high pressure. So both those things moving close to us and even some lightnings. Some thunderstorms to the south, we will be watching as well. The overall impact, you will see in my extended forecast, is warmer weather in San Francisco. Right now, downtown, i am holding with 70s the next seven days, with likely the warmest weather on friday at 78 degrees. So kind of on defrost here in San Francisco, after a lot of fog the past eight to ten weeks. For the inland valleys, notice this. We are going to the hottest day of the week on friday. 104 degrees with those thunderstorms off to the south, and some humidity. Then, eventually, well go down. But its really looking like a hot next seven days with those upper 90s and low 100s. So, wanted to take a close focus here at fridays forecast with the hottest day of the week. And you can see were looking at 104 in concord. That, likely, will be close to a record. And livermore, also, hitting 104 on friday. That would be good enough to at least tie a record. San jose, at 99, likely reco in the hottest stretch of summer. And we are looking at well, that weather where you got to stay inside, drink plenty of water, and keep cool. Its going to be tough going here, especially on friday. But i think well be able to all get through it. All right. Sounds good. Thanks, jeff. Coming up. A show of support for black lives matter.
