Thank you. Seth as coronavirus cases continue to surge in states across the country, President Trump has been quietly continuing his allout assault on the environment so we decided to take a break from the breaking news of the day to see how trump is taking advantage of a Global Crisis to make things even worse for vulnerable americans this is the check in. Seth President Trump has been a colossal failure at the one thing americans are most desperate for him to do contain the coronavirus. He hasnt increased testing, he hasnt dealt with the economic fallout, and you could be forgiven for thinking he hasnt been doing anything at all however, he has been very successful at rolling back environmental regulations and weakening major conservation laws, all while americans have been distracted by a Global Pandemic because instead of pulling back on pollution when lungs are having their worst year since mad men went off the air, trump has actually been doubling down on his dangerous agenda according to reports, during the covid19 lockdown, u. S. Federal agencies have eased fuelefficiency standards for new cars, frozen rules for soot air pollution, and continued to lease public property to oil and Gas Companies when clean air is perhaps most important for the health and safety of everyday americans. When trump seems to doing nothing that hes at his most dangerous its like wh y for way too long you know youre about to wallpaper over some sharpie. That is not the path of a hurricane, tyler. But of course, whenever trump does something quietly its only because Everything Else hes doing is so, so loud that it seems quiet in relation. Trump cant be quiet hed be a terrible ninja i came through the window, you probably didnt hear me because i am quiet like the wind thats what my karate master told me. Even worse, trump is using the coronavirus pandemic, which has disproportionately affected people of color, to push through antiscience policies under the guise of creating more jobs, jobs that rare rarely go to the people most hurt by these policies air pollution has been linked to higher coronavirus death rates, along with many other health problems, and air pollution is usually worse in areas with larger minority populations. The folks with the smallest carbon footprints are the ones who will feel the most pain. We have just been beat down and people are devastated. I dont think anybodys life is worth a job. If people of color and lowincome who are most affected by the issues are never in the rooms where the decisions are being made, we are going to continue to have two different worlds, two different realities. Seth no surprise that trump doesnt care what happens to people of color, but he also doesnt believe its happening at all, as evidenced by this tweet from 2014 when trump wrote, give me clean, beautiful and healthy air, not the same old Climate Change, Global Warming bull[ bleep ] i am tired of this nonsense. In fact, trumps view that Global Warming is a hoax is one of the only stances he has been consistent on. That, and there is no such thing as a tie thats too long i like it to just brush the top of the knee. For example, he repeated his same bizarre claims, sprinkled with some selfaggrandizement, at the last g7 summit when a reporter questioned trumps skepticism about Climate Change. In a nutshell, i want the cleanest water on earth. I want the cleanest air on earth, and thats what were doing. And im an environmentalist. A lot of people dont understand that i have done more Environmental Impact statements probably than anybody thats i guess i can say definitely, because i have done many, many, many of them. More than anybody thats ever been president , or Vice President , or anything even close to president seth you cant claim you are an environmentalist just because you look like a compost heap also, what do you mean youve done more on the environment than anybody thats even been close to president . You know you are not close to president , right youre there i mean, al gore was close to president , and he at least made a full movie about the environment. I should note, if there was a movie about trump, a convenient lie would be a good title did i write a check to Stormy Daniels you know, if i did, i dont remember it. But of course, trump doesnt actually want clean air and water. In fact, one of his first actions he took as president proved that. In early 2017, he signed an executive order to start the process of repealing an obamaera clean water regulation known as the waters of the United States rule the rule limited the amount of pollution the developers and landowners could dump into our waterways, and trumps repeal, which environmentalists called a sickening gift to polluters was finalized less than a year ago. And in the last few weeks, trumped bragged about that at two separate events while telling the same weird story about how people were allegedly so overwhelmed with emotion because of his actions we stopped the egregious abuse of the clean water act when i signed that legislation, i had many farmers and construction people standing behind me. People that havent cried since they were a baby, some of them never even when they were a baby, and they were crying we did the u. S. Waters, you saw that the u. S. Waters act. That was a big one grown men that had never cried even when they were a baby, they were standing behind me when i signed that bill at the white house and they were crying they were crying because we gave their life back to them. Seth for all the lying trump does, youd think hed get a little better at it. All you did was sign an order. Why are you acting like a revival tent preacher . I healed her husbands rotted leg, and, oh, how she cried and thanked me oh, she was more tears than woman, she was. And also, nobody was crying. Check it out so how important is this . Huge. Very. Very. Its huge seth maybe he mistook that guy sweating and thought his neck was crying. Why does he keep saying some of them never cried even when they were babies . I mean even for a weird man, that is a weird detail to add. It really hammers home what a egomaniac what he is its not enough to make someone cry like a baby, he has to make them cry for the first time in their lives. I turned them from data into dawson. And, yeah, that is backtoback nights referencing a show that went off the air in 2003 either way, the truth doesnt stop trump from using that ridiculous anecdote to promote yet another harmful initiative, gutting the National Environmental policy act its a 50yearold conservation law that requires federal agencies to take into consideration the Environmental Impact of Infrastructure Projects before theyre approved everything from how it would affect local wildlife to projected Greenhouse Gas emissions. It also allowed residents to weigh in on those plans. But now, public review would be limited in order to speed up the permitting of freeways, power plants and pipelines, one of the biggest and most audacious deregulatory actions of the Trump Administration and once again, trump used the coronavirus as cover for why Something Like this needs to be implemented. And look, i think we can all agree we need better roads and bridges. But i dont think trumps wants the roads to be better he just wants them to be straighter there is a highway in a certain state, short road, not even a highway i guess more of a roadway. And they put in it was a Vice President joe biden is elected, quote, markets would crash and cities would burn. Our country would suffer like never before. Youve got to be wide awake to make those turns youve got to see those things youve got to see the guardrails seth i cant believe i have to say this, but you should be wide awake when you drive no matter how many turns there are on the roads under trump, our roads are gonna be so straight, you could daydream and even doze off in some places. Also, he thinks you have to be in good shape to be able to turn a Steering Wheel that might explain the shape hes in. He thinks driving to the gym is the workout. All right. Made it. Time to hit the showers. Now, by ignoring the environmental effects of Major Construction projects, trump is once again harming the communities that have already been much worse off throughout his presidency critics point out that these new rules sideline the concerns of poor minority communities impacted by those projects rather than listen, the Trump Administrations plan aims to silence such voices. And if it wasnt clear before this, the differences between the two choices we have in november couldnt be more obvious. For example, the same week trump touted his pollutionpermitting proposals, joe biden announced his clean energy plans joe biden announcing his own plan to invest 2 trillion over four years on clean jobs and infrastructure these investments are a winwinwin for this country, creating jobs, Cutting Energy costs, protecting our climate. When donald trump thinks about Climate Change, the only word he can muster is hoax. When i think about Climate Change, the word i think of is jobs. Seth hes right. The work we need to do to slow Climate Change will create thousands of new jobs, like building solar panels and wind farms. The problem with a president like trump is that everyone he knows and is beholden to got rich on old jobs like coal mining and Oil Pipelines and invading ukraine the Trump Presidency will be over some day, but the sad reality is that the environmental effects will be permanent, and that becomes everyones problem because if we dont start taking Climate Change seriously and making major changes, were all gonna be crying like babies, even if we never cried like babies in the first place. I want to make that point. Thats a very important point to add. Not everyone cried when they were a baby. This has been the check in. Late night. John tysons motto was, when better chickens are hatched, we will hatch them. Its why all of the tyson chicken that bears his name is raised with no antibiotics ever. Every nugget, strip and drumstick. Keep it real. Keep it tyson. Cool . Drop the taco. Get in the car. Does this sentra feel like a compromise to you . Wait, what. . The handling is good, right . Seth our first guest tonight is a New York Times bestselling author and golden globenominated actress you know from such films as gangs of new york, vanilla sky, the other woman and being john malkovich. She recently launched a new wine brand called avaline here is my conversation with cameron diaz seth hey, cameron, how are you . Good. How are you, seth . So good to see you seth i know, its been a very long time since weve laid eyes on one another. I want to start by saying congratulations. You have an 8monthold, and 7 months. Seth 7 months . Okay, good yep seth just 7 months so kind of so this is, like, almost perfectly i mean not perfectly, you dont want to say that, but this has timed out nicely that you have had sort of forced time away from the world, and it must be nice to spend it with a baby. It has. Its been a really great, you know excuse before, my baby was an excuse to stay home, you know [ laughter ] seth yeah. Now i dont have to make that our little bubble for this covid situation is that her dad, my husband benji, you know, he gets to be home he works from home and so he gets to be with her as much as i do well, not as much because he is working all day long, but he actually gets to come out of a meeting and give her a kiss and play with her for a little bit where, if he was going to the office every day, he wouldnt have been able to do that. So were just having a lot of gratitude for that and, you know, yeah, its pretty wild its really wild seth so you have a new wine company, and i want to make sure i say it its avaline avaline seth avaline its avaline and im very embarrassed we phonetically spell it right there. Seth yeah, yeah, yeah. [ laughter ] well thats you used a purposely smaller font to burn me so heres this really embarrassing thing so yesterday one of my producers said, so, when cameron is on, we sent a couple bottles of to the house, but there was no note, and so we just drank them. I did not realize. [ laughter ] but then we did dig through the fridge and i have this much of the the rose. Seth avaline rose. But this is nice because instead of, like, faking that i am going to drink it, like ive already fully drank it you like it seth and its delicious. Its delicious, right seth i am, out of necessity, just going to drink from the bottle because this is the time i will pour myself a little glass here i like to drink you are drinking it the best way, straight out of the fridge, icy cold seth yep i drink mine over ice because i seth oh, good. I am so glad you did that. I was going to put mine over ice. And i thought like, as the wine connoisseur, you might burn me its a beverage, seth seth okay. Its what . Its a beverage. A refreshment. [ laughter ] seth oh, so youve learned all the french words that you need to in order to be wine. Refreshment [ laughter ] seth refreshment icy cold so, tell me, first, i want to start at the top how did you come up with the name avaline avaline so katherine and i went through this process of my partner, katherine power. Seth ummhmm who is an entrepreneur and a friend of mine, who i met through my sisterinlaw nicole richie, and they have been best friends forever. And katherine is an entrepreneur, and her sort of idea is that, if you find the name first to something, its easier to kind of, like, you know, go towards that branding so we went through all of the names that we could. We were trying to find, you know, our friendship, we both love cats, is it something shocked. You know, is it like noir. Like, what is it and every what we found was that every single name, one word, two words, three words, four words that we could string together in any different way was already taken as a vineyard or a wine, because there are so many wines so we, you know, we went to baby naming sites seth all right and avaline just looked beautiful, we thought, as written. Seth yeah. And then the meaning, which is sensitive, humble and lively, which it really felt like seth really . It embodied what we wanted for our brand to sort of, you know, be so we ended up with avaline. Seth i am going to try to finish this before the end of the interview. I want people to see exactly how much [ laughter ] this is made with the organic grapes can you did you start knowing thats what you wanted to do or was it in an educating yourself about wine that you realized that was important yeah, it was through educating ourselves about winemaking process that we understood it. Because we never you know, look, i have drank wine my entire life, and my assumption, you know, what the assume is seth yeah. Make an ass out of me seth yeah. Is that it was just fermented grapes why wouldnt it be and then we learned sort of what possibly could be put into wine, and we realized that we wanted to drink only wines that didnt have those things in it. And, you know, and also that organic grapes were a huge part of, you know, the sort of clean aspect of what we speak about, because it all starts in the vineyard for us because organic farming is just cleaner by nature than commercial farming you know, there is not the synthetic pesticides, its kinder to the land and to the environment and to the waterways. And so and then we realized that we only really consume, you know, we make such an effort to consume organic groceries, to put clean skin products on our, you know, bodies, and to wear organic cotton, all these things that we never really questioned our wine and when we realized that it wasnt a given that our wines were organic, we went ahead and sort of went that we sort of put the pillar of our wine was that it had to have organic grapes seth did that make the process more difficult, or once you decided to do that, was it easier you betcha it made the process more difficult seth yeah, i would have guessed. [ laughter ] its what really led us to europe, because what we found was that there was a lot more land being farmed organically in europe, and generational farms, and those generational farms had been farming that way for generations. Seth ummhmm and in making wine in the way that we were looking for wine to be made, which was with the least amount of intervention that could be created as a largescale wine so we found these winemakers who were making the wine we wanted to drink, making it the way we or to the standards that we had for it, and then we had, you know, the farming practices were right where we wanted, you know, wanted it to be. And so we went to europe and were bringing it over we are hoping to one day be able to make wine here in the states, but it was hard to find organic land here that was fast enough to scale up with us as we went you know, we want this wine to be available to everyone seth i am very happy that its available to me at this moment you have a rose and a white, is that correct, right now . Hmmmm. Seth they are excellent. Theres rose and a white. There is more to come. Seth its very nice. I will say its very, this very helpful on the label, although i did ignore the pronunciation guide. [ laughter ] but this does say that it pairs well with the warmth of the sun and the company of your best friends so there you go. There you go seth cheers cheers. Seth you mentioned your sisterinlaw nicole richie. She was on the show during covid times as well, and she said she has been doing a lot of gardening. Is this can you verify it i know you live nearby yeah, we are five houses away from each other. Yeah, she has a beautiful garden she is always thats her morning routine, is in the garden, and i get to benefit from that, so seth thats good, because your biggest fear when you have a talk show like this is that people are just lying to you, knowing there is no way to verify it. [ laughter ] but i can verify it because i have the physical manifestation that you have a wine and now youre verifying on her behalf i am verifying, she has and she has her chickens seth oh, yes her chickens are hilarious. We love chickens they are a lot of fun. Seth that is i cant think of a betanfternoon than dg s our summer. And watching [ laughter ] seth all the best, cameron its always so good to see you its great to see you, seth thanks so much for taking the time and for drinking avaline. I am so grateful seth there we go lets finish them. Enjoy wow oh, my gosh. Hello seth there you go, guys. Hello, sunshine, go out there and enjoy the rest of your summer seth we did it you are my last interview of the day. I hope i can keep it together for billy porter all right, great to see you. Oh. [ laughter ] seth well be right back with billy porter. Gs its open hey. This is amazing. With moderate to severe ulcerative colitis, are you okay . Even when i was there, i never knew when my symptoms would keep us apart. So i talked to my doctor about humira. I learned humira can help get, and keep uc under control when other medications havent worked well enough. And it helps people achieve control that lasts. So you can experience few or no symptoms. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. Dont start humira if you have an infection. Be there for you, and them. Ask your gastroenterologist about humira. With humira, control is possible. Cheei must be dreaming. Read. No, no. Its actually a real thing. You should try it. Its delicious. Mmmm. Seth our next guest is an emmy, grammy, and tonywinning performer you know from his work on the fx series pose and kinky boots on broadway. Hes currently working with the intersectional Grassroots Campaign, be an arts hero, to advocate for emergency arts relief please welcome back to the show our friend, billy porter seth billy, welcome back how are you . I am fantastic. How are you . Seth you know, im hanging in there i want to start by congratulating you you were nominated again for pose, a category you won last year and we were talking a little bit before this started. Its a little different. You come from broadway you only get nominated once for a role yeah, you only win once for a role that you create on broadway so, its a really interesting journey. Im very grateful to be nominated again. I am very grateful to be on pose, a show that is transformative um, you know, a show that truly is where art meets activism for me, which is a big deal for me and my work. So, im thrilled thank you. Seth obviously, its going to be a bit of a different ceremony this year as circumstances, you know, dictate. And i think one of the things ill miss the most, and i dont think im alone, is billy porter on the red carpet. [ laughter ] i hope no, again, i do appreciate the glasses that you brought to this, which makes me think that even if we have the zoom emmys, you will probably bring some sort of effort to your work. Some joie de vivre. You know, im getting it tapped in realness right now in my house. Seth i love it its a summer look. Its fabulous and freeing. [ laughter ] seth now, one of our writers, amber ruffin actually got your actual hat with the remotecontrol veil. I saw that. Seth and it was the real hat. And it was an ordeal to get the hat. The hat does not travel alone. The hat travels with someone it does not travel alone. Yes, it travels with sarah sokol, who is the designer of the hat and the hat is heavy seth and how did you what gave you the inspiration for the hat . Um, we had been at another awards show where Billie Eilish was in front of me, and she was wearing this veil over her gucci situation. And i said, oh, thats cute, thats fun, but i would never cover my face because i have spent too long getting people to see my face. Seth yeah. [ laughter ] and my stylist at the time, sam ratelle, said, well, what if we could open and close it . Would you be interested . And thats how it came about and thats why we did it [ laughter ] seth your your show pose, sadly, was one of the many shows that had to halt production due to the coronavirus. Yeah. Seth you were actually slated to direct an episode this year yes seth was that something you were excited about yeah, i am totally, you know, i am, as i say, very often trying to be the head bitch in charge [ laughter ] so this means i am writing a lot. I have been directing a lot in the theater. I have been writing in the theater. So i am trying to move that over into my film and television, you know, starting my new company. You know, and trying to be the change that i want to see, and be able to greenlight my own projects and being able to say yes to myself, and being able to support the stories and give voice to the voiceless in ways that only happen when you have that kind of power so im very, very excited about, you know, enlarging my territory, as it were. Seth another way that you are trying to help out is your campaign, be a hero. Can you speak a little to that yeah. Be an arts hero is essentially a Grassroots Campaign to get the u. S. Senate to pass an emergency arts relief act by the end of this week, by august 1st. You know, so many people dont understand that its the second largest economic driver in the nation the economy. 4. 5, the gdp. You know were talking were talking the financiers language now, you know . Its like the the economy in new york. Broadway sold more tickets than all of the new york and new jersey sports teams together thats 1. 8 billion in ticket sales. And right now during covid, you know, 94 of the arts workers have lost income 64 have been fully unemployed due to covid you know, and we are just reaching out and calling to the senate to really get this relief package, specifically for arts workers, with Health Insurance you know its about the economy its about, you know, 40 of the nea grants serve lowincome, people of color, and lbgtq people and veterans and disabled communities. Like, there is so much funding that is necessary in this crisis in particular. Seth i do think, too, and maybe you can speak to this because, obviously, broadway is very glamorous, and i think people have this idea that everyone who works on broadway is making a fortune because, you know, they read how much hamilton tickets are but most people, even on such an iconic strip of land as broadway, are just barely making ends meet. Yes seth and sometimes i think at times like this, we talk about things like, you know, firemen and teachers, and we forget that, you know, people in the arts also have families and they also are trying to put food on the table yeah, and were working class, especially on broadway. You know, we live handtomouth. I did it for 30 years. It is not were not rich, you know were two to five paychecks away from poverty, just like everybody else and, you know, this moment has illuminated that in really stark ways and so were calling were calling on the people, were you know, we have an open letter to our senators to explore how to make sure this relief package is put through and that our people are taken care of seth and i know this is a completely volunteer run, your organization yes seth where can people go if they want to sign up and lend a helping hand here . Yes you can sign up at you can visit beanartshero. Com thats the best way to get to us beanartshero. Com, and that will take you to Different Levels and layers of how you can help seth well, obviously, im a little biased, but i do believe the arts does a great amount to enrich all of our lives, and you in particular have certainly enriched ours. And congrats again youre very sweet seth it is just always such a pleasure to talk to you. Thank you [ laughter ] its wonderful to be back, and i cant wait to see you in person. Seth same to you well be right back with a performance from Country Music superstar jason aldean hey, didnt order any pizza. Jake from state farm.
