Reporter according to the state, wearing a mask is essential if you want to flatten the curve. He says 80 compliance could reduce transmission by up to 60 . Having that mask on or handy is a very important tool as we continue to see the evidence grow that it can help reduce the spread of covid19. We continue to have increasing cases, increasing hospitalizations, and a lot of it is people just not complying with the health order right now. We have yet to find a county that has issued a fine. In Contra Costa County, those fines start add 100 for the first offense. Get caught a third time, you can face a 500 fine each time. New at 11 00, covid19 cases are being reported at a south bay costco. Tonight Santa Clara County Public Health is investigating cases at the warehouse store on Lawrence Station road in sunnyvale. Health leaders say the store didnt have to shut down because it followed county rules for handling these situations. Those include identifying close contacts who may have been exposed, disinfecting the store, and notifying the county about the exposure. Looking at the numbers across the bay area, more than 900 new cases were reported. Contra costa county saw the biggest jump, 231 new infections. Another of the hot spots in the region, Alameda County adding 195. Statewide, though, a positive sign tonight. Case numbers have dropped four days in a row. Dailey new cases in california shown in this graph showed the numbers peaked one week ago on july 21st. The state reported 12,000 new infections that day. But since then, cases have dropped every day. Look at today. 6,000 new cases, half of the number from last tuesday. Now, lets shift and take a look at the 14day average of new cases. You requecan see the line has td upward over the past two months, but the last few days its dropped. Our first sign in quite some time of cases trending downward. While this is encouraging news, its important that everyone continue to wear a mask and social distance if its to continue in this direction. It would urge uc berkeley to comply with rules that restrict evictions. Berkeley landlords cannot evict people for failing to pay their rent during the pandemic, but uc berkeley is exempt from that ordinance because its a state agency. Changing the scope of the mayors powers in san jose is apparently not polling well. After a marathon zoom meeting that spanned two days and grew hostile at times, the city Council Voted to put the strong mayor issue on the November Ballot rather than deciding the matter themselves. It would expand the mayors powers, bringing them in line with those of other bigcity mayors, but the mercury news reports new polling data indicates the measure may be a tough sell to voters. Many want to have every employee tested before returning, but as nbc bay areas jean elle reports, they are waiting longer than expected for test results. Covids been quite challenging. Reporter he planned to reopen thursday. Temporary closure signs are popping up at San Francisco businesses. Andy town Coffee Roasters closed several locations. We decided to just out of an abundance of caution to close everything just so everyone could get tested. Reporter but employers say scheduling tests and getting the results is taking longer than expected. I have other employees who its going to be a week for them to get tested and then probably another week to get results. Reporter Lauren Crabbe is planning to open the doors august 2nd. Shes hoping to have results for all employees by then so everyone can feel safe. From a business perspective, its really important to have that Rapid Testing so that we can get back to work. Reporter acknowledging the backlog, state Health Leaders are issuing new guidelines for who should be tested. Were at a point right now where we can say everybody that wants a test needs to get a test . The answer is not today. We need to prioritize the testing for those who need it the most and for Public Health purposes. Reporter those with symptoms, essential workers, First Responders, and those possibly exposed to a person with covid19 should be the first to get a test. Jean elle, nbc bay area news. California will soon start tracking the Sexual Orientation of people getting tested for covid19. Providers already have to report about race and ethnicity, but the state hopes collecting this new data will close any gaps in testing and treatment. We expect over the course of the next month that well see improvements in the use of these fields and our ability to report out to you and to use this data to effectively see how our interventions are working. Labs will also be required to collect and report the information to the state. 93 of californians are currently living in a county on the governors watch list. That includes every bay area county except san mateo. However, the peninsula could soon join the list as the Health Department says it has more new cases than allowed under state guidelines. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz County was recently put on the list. Today it was forced to close several indoor operations. That means like most of the bay area, hair and nail salons can only operate outdoors, but indoor malls, places of worship, and gyms must shut down. Then as we progress through the afternoon, we get our sunshine back by 1 00, and thats whats going to make it the best day. We get that cool start, and then we get that sunny afternoon.
