so we've kind of expected this as we've seen it several days in a row and it continues today. let's check out our high temperatures as we'll see a wide range from the coastal areas to the north bay valleys. we're up to 64 degrees today in san francisco and oakland reaching 72 and 82 in san jose and 90 in antioch and clear lake today reaching 94 degree. tracking three tropical systems out there for the pacific and the athletic and let's start with the pacific because this is now a major hurricane and will target the hawaiian islands over the next few days. right now moving to the west, northwest at 17 miles per hour and wind speeds within that hurricane of 120 miles per hour. the good thing is that we are expecting this to weaken. it won't move into the hawaiian islands as a major hurricane, keand creating some hugey a big waves over the next few days. then as we look at the gulf, we have it now a tropical depression number eight. that is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm as it continues on a westward track over towards southern texas over the weekend. and we also out farther in the atlantic have tropical storm gonzalo. this will be moving over the caribbean the next few days and moving over warm water and it is expected to strengthen as it moves through the lesser antilles just south of hispanola as well as south of cuba. we'll watch that throughout the weekend to see if this may have an impact on the united states as it continues to move to the west over the next few days. as we look at our forecast here, stays quiet, but you'll notice a little warmer for the weekend as our inland areas reach to the low 90s. as we look at san francisco, not changing too much. we may see a little bit more sunshine by the end of the weekend. mike, how's it looking for the commute right now? >> overall pretty good. but i'll call it a couple hot spots here. the first one we're tracking, of course, on the peninsula. the traffic alert in san mateo and foster city. we're looking to the map and looking at westbound highway 101 actually 101 off of westbound 92. the san mateo bridge. we still have only two lanes open and at foster city you can get out starts. >> that could drag down a family's internet speed. chris cmura is here with some tech support. >> good morning, even if you went through one round of distance learning, it is important to review and prepare for more. first start off by taking inventory of every device that is connected to your wi-fi. disconnect anything not in use. then create a family schedule for online school, work and playtime. try to avoid the internet rush hour. online traffic could get bogged down around 9:00 a.m. consider starting school and work later in the day. >> to lessen your frustration, if you can, space those things out. don't start every conference call at the top of the hour. >> kids who are learning from home need school supplies, too. many around the bay area simply can't afford them. garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping his eye on that commute for us. first, let's start out with meteorologist kari hall. how is it looking out there? >> looks pretty good. another beautiful day for the bay area, but it will be slightly warmer compared to yesterday. we're seeing a clear sky as we check out the east bay heading over to martinez. expect it to be at about 61 degrees as you head out the door at 8:00 and then gradually warming up. at 2:00 81 degrees and not a bad day at all and it will reach up to 90 degrees in antioch today and seeing highs up to 94 while it stays cool along the coast and only 60 today in half moon look at all the microclimates and what is ahead coming up. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> we have to get you right out to the peninsula, kari. the traffic alert going on but first check the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are turned on. how quickly all these lanes filled in and no drama besides this getting to the bay bridge. over the all the speed sensors are moving smoothly and jams up through foster city and mariner's island is where the crash blocks two of your four lanes and crash there and traffic alert issued and use hillsdale or fox city boulevard to get over if you need. the dumbarton bridge is better. >> thanks, mike. the breaking news we have been telling you about all morning the fugitive wanted right here in the bay area a former college researcher who allegedly lied about connections with the chinese military is seeking refuge. "today in the bay" cierra johnson is live for us this morning. talk to us about how officials learned about this possible connection? >> yes, it was last fall that tang juan received that nonimmigrant visa to be a researcher at uc davis. last month, though, that fbi investigators found images of tang on the internet wearing chinese military attire and that's when that investigation began. now, according to the fbi, tang denied having connection to the chinese military. she said she never served in the military and was not a member of the communist party. but on june 26th, the u.s. government charged her with visa fraud. it was after that that the former researcher was believed to have sought refuge at the chinese consulate here in san francisco where she believed is believed to still be. now this news comes as the u.s. announced the closure of the chinese consulate on tuesday. the u.s. accuses china of stealing research, intellectual property related to covid research. reports began to surface of workers burning papers in the building's court yard. the houston fire department was called but firefighters were not permitted on the property. take a listen to what the u.s. secretary of state has to say about that consulate's closure. >> we're going to take actions that protect the american people and protect our security, our national security and also protect our economy and jobs. >> now, the chinese government has condemned the closure of that houston consulate as for intel that she may be seeking refuge here in san francisco came after the fbi was investigating another chinese citizen for a similar charge of visa fraud. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thank you. we want to talk about new shortages being reported this morning for one of the most widely used coronavirus treatments. some san francisco hospitals say they're running low on supplies of remdesivir. other health care providers like stanford health told us they have no problems with supplies. this is certainly not everywhere but one ucsf specialist says they're running out. >> soon enough to the point where we'll have to decide on an ethical basis if five people or ten people come in at the same time, who are you going to give the last course of drugs for? >> some of the problem has to do with the recent spike in hospitalization. also, hospitals are forced to rely on the department of health and human services for restocking after a deal made with the drugmaker gilead. well new for you this morning, very important tool in fighting covid-19 is under recall. so listen to this, the fda is now recalling 75 brands of hand sanitizer. some may contain toxic levels of wood alcohol that may cause injury or even blindness if absorbed through the skin or even death if ingested. those sanitizers were sold at walmart, costco and other national chains. the fda first warned about nine products made in mexico last month. since then, dozens more have made that list, as well. we have a list of those, all those recall items right there on our website, nbcbayarea.com. one east bay city is making history with its new top cop. bsa french is the first woman to head up the richmond police department in its 110-year history and the first woman of color. she was appointed interim chief when the chief before her left in controversy ten months ago. french was hired 22 years ago. she worked her way up through the ranks and said her past wasn't an easy one. >> i was a teenage mom. i am local girl. i actually still live here in the city of richmond and it's important for me to talk about these things because i want to see, i want the young people in my community to see that i came from where you are. >> french will be sworn in on august 1st. certainly a big day for nbc. exactly one year from today, the rescheduled tokyo olympic games kick off. at the center of it all, will be nbc sports director mike tirico host of nbc olympic primetime. so good to have you early this morning, mike. finally, you know, maybe you can see the olympics off in the distance. do you think the games will finally happen? >> yeah, laura. good morning. one of those strange things. we should be right now getting ready for the opening ceremony tomorrow in tokyo but as with everything, our lives have been upended and plans are changing. but when they put the date on the calendar for july 23 of 2021, it gave all of us something to point to. we're ready and as optimistic as possible. we know we have no idea what the virus is going to do locally, globally or regionally. but if everything is returning to a new normal hopefully the olympics will be a big part of that one year from today. >> exactly. we have a year to do it. now what about the athletes themselves? what are you hearing? do they like the postponement? is it tough for them? does it give them more time to train? >> well, it's a little bit of both. it's really hard for them. i think we're all creatures of habit, especially elite athletes. they stay on a schedule. they have aman. with the olympics, you know, you have one, maybe two shots in and the great, great ones have three. you know what you're focusing on. i'm going to be ready in 2020 and then the stop sign comes in happen. i think once they had the date on the calendar that helped them replan and retool their bodies. either upgrade or maintain the preparation plan they had and now i think they're all systems go. i spoke to simone manual and some of the athletes training at stafford and once they had that next date and get back in the pool, that was big for them physically and maybe more importantly mentally. >> the bay area produces a lot of great olympians. who is the rising star we should be watching right now? >> oh, my gosh, we don't have enough time. we'll go right into "today" show if we listed everybody. think about all the talented athletes from cal and stafford and stafford lookt a that pool. that pool has gold medalists walking in and out all the time. katie ledecky, obviously, the face of the swimming competition from the u.s. perspective. gold medals won in london in rio and now an opportunity to perhaps do it again in tokyo one year farther down the line. and she will have competition. and that's exciting because katie ledecky was almost this gold stamp, we know she was going to win medals. that will push katie to be even better who when the delay came, katie enrolled in more classes at. >> they have that drive and spirit. we'll be watching for it. we'll put it on the calendar a year from today. thanks. don't forget, you can catch all the amazing performances and record-breaking efforts from the 2021 tokyo olympics right here on nbc. i'm so excited for it. hard to wait. 6:39 right now. okay. you can pretend to be your own olympian, guys. maybe head outside today. >> i don't know what i would do. do they have a walking competition? no, an eating competition. >> i have been walking about four miles a day. >> you are on your way. add a few miles every week. >> yeah, i might be in the senior division. >> well, you know what, hey, mike, it's not that funny. >> today is a good day to get out and walk, though, right, kari? >> yeah. we're going to have some beautiful weather. although we're starting out with some clouds. let's take a live look outside in walnut creek as we get started this morning. if you're heading out for that walk, maybe some speed walking going on, we'll see our temperatures in the upper 50s a 10:00, we're in for more sunshine the rest of today reaching into the mid 80s for the tri-valley. low 80s for the south bay and for san francisco some mid 60s. we'll get a look at the rest of the forecast coming up. what's going on for the commute right now, mike. >> kari, got good news but bad news if you're leaving the house right now and you're looking at the peninsula. we are showing you on the map that overall things are looking great. i do want to circle the san mateo area where that crash has just cleared. i'll update that in a second and i want to make sure we touch on sunol southbound 680 is jammed up because your right lanes are blocked by a crash and oil and an antifreeze spill and towards fremont. west 92 approaching 101 that crash just cleared clearing that traffic alert. good at the bay bridge toll plaza. back to you. >> thanks, mike. coming up next for you, as schools get ready for distance learning this year, many are without the laptops desperately. next, the alarming number of those devices needed. the u.s. senate is edging closer to a deal that would provide americans with another stimulus payment. let's take you out to new york city. stocks down slightly as 1.4 million americans filed for first-time unemployment claims. you're watching "today in the bay." my money should work as hard as i do. that's why i use my freedom unlimited card every time i get gas. give me a little slack! with freedom unlimited, you're always earning. i said i need some slack on pump three! welcome back, everyone. for many bay area students, the first day of school is just weeks away and we know that distance learning is now on the horizon and technology has never been harder or more important than ever. "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us to talk about how supply and demand can make all the difference to these kids, chr kris. >> when the pandemic started back in march my daughters didn't have up to date chrome books and they were sold out. that is what we're running in to as we're all competing for the same number of resources. my girls are in public schools and we just got a survey about their technology needs. a lot of districts sending out a lot of the same communications. according to the california department of education survey, districts around california need 700,000 computers and more than 300,000 wi-fi hot spots to make sure that students can access that distance learning that their teachers are preparing for right now. the half billion dollar price tag is one issue, as you mentioned, the supply chain is the other. but, we do have some good news here in the bay area. in oakland, 25,000 chrome books are on order and due in early august for oakland unified school district. they are a public/private partnership called the oakland undivided fund. work is under way to provide those students with internet access and that all important tech support. in the bay area and south bay, leaders from santa clara county and san jose boosting spending to close the divide that also emerged here as a major issue when learning shifted online in the spring. >> the city of san jose is going to be investing $24 million to build infrastructure for online learning throughout our city of san jose and that the county has invested $7.1 million for devices. >> so, comcast, the parent company of this station has extended their free internet services to eligible families. we've also seen a number of private donations from google and t-mobile and twitter ceo jack dorsy also donated $10 million to that oakland fund. but the clock is ticking. just not a matter of getting the chrome books and the technology and the tablets, but also a matter of getting them in time. all the information on the skoo school reopenings. go to nbcbayarea.com. marcus and laura?
